30 Washington Pl, Morristown, NJ 07960, United States, Morristown
Site where George Washington & troops spent the coldest winter on record, with a museum & mansion.
Its a small but great museum. Dont forget to go down to the lowest floor!
The Morristown National Historical Park is the site where General George Washington and the Continental Army encamped from December 1779 to June 1780. I visited because I was looking for nearby sites in my Passport to the National Parks book and the site seemed neat. The visitor center has some good information and the reconstructed soldiers and officers huts give a good understanding of just how rough the winter of 1779-1780 mustve been for Washington and the Continental Army. The site is best if you like to hike as it has many trails over varied terrain. If you just want to stop by and see some Revolutionary War history, this makes for a quick trip.
beautiful location, mansion and fascinating museum…George Washington slept here! ha If you are in the area, bring fam and check it out. Our nations first National Historical Park? (we understood)
What a great place. The movie was great. The tour of the house was excellent. The guide was very informative and answered lots of questions. A great afternoon in discovering history.
Came in to pick up my national park pass. Friendly efficient service. Lovely visitor center with nice restrooms.
Historical park with lot of hiking options.
Great museum. The historic Ford house, Washingtons Headquarters, gives you a sense of what it must of been like during the Revolutionary War. Our Ranger tour guide was terrific.
Very nice. Free yours by the park rangers. Great place for kids and adults interested in revolutionary war. The basement area of museum has fun interactive items for kids to play with in order to learn. Rangers were very nice. Small little gift shop with reasonably priced items.
I grew up in the area and have never been. Boy was I blown away. What a great free tour and the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable.
This is a wonderful site to visit. The recently opened interactive site in the basement is very informative on the history of the winter encampment. Its free!
Come to Morristown NJ and learn the important history of Washingtons Winter encampment. A+ park service folks, swing by Jockey Hollow Trail and learn the rest.
One word beautiful. they keep it clean, trails are great. a lot of wildlife and interesting history
Interesting part of our history I didnt know about.
We loved the historical film at the visitor center. The volunteer there was really friendly.
Visited for a Boy Scouts trip. My troop loved the trails, The scenery, the historical landmarks, and the breathtaking views the trails had to offer. Additionally, my troop learned a lot of historical information from the signs, guides, and destinations. The views were really nice and different because it had a combination of scenic mountains and also dense forests. The only thing I would add is to have more signs differentiating private property and public property. There are a lot of locations throughout the different trails in the park that risks you trespassing in to private property and that was something my troop experienced. We accidentally took a wrong turn after a sign said that the trail we were supposed to take was closed off. It took us about half an hour to figure out we were in someone’s backyard before turning around and going the other direction. However all in all, the place is gorgeous and I would recommend everyone experience this opportunity, and I recommend this place for picnics, revolutionary war experiences, and having a nice family trip into the American wilderness.
Very informative and great staff. Junior ranger program could be extended upon, but otherwise great museum and hiking trails with lots to do and lots to see.
We visited the Secret Garden. Not huge but really feels like youre a million miles away. Lots of beautiful flowers and not crowded.
Very cool place to explore the history of Morristown. It has a museum to explore as well as beautiful grounds to sit and listen to the bird. Staff was helpful and friendly as well as knowledgeable
This place is a great place for a family trip back in history. Many people know Gettysburg but this Morristown winter encampment is not as well known. It was colder and harder on the revelutionary troups, and an excellent place for old and young alike to delve into history. The reactors are very knowledgeable and accurately depict the tale of hardship and struggle.
Good site to visit if you only have a short time, 1-2hrs. Helps to fill in that Revolutionary War history gap of what happened in the winter of 1780-1781 makes it worth the trip.
We took our Lab and hiked through the woods that are remarkably clear of vines and undergrowth. Peggy, and all dogs, are required to be on leash here - although if your dog is well behaved you might be able to get away with some off leash time in the woods. This is a national park and thus is well maintained and locations are marked. DO NOT pull over and stop on the side of any roads here. The park rangers will give you a ticket. Use the parking lots which are plentiful. This is a historical site where you can feel the immense suffering during the long freezing winter Washingtons troops spent here - a winter worse than Valley Forge!
Great for hiking. Revolution soldering going on today.
Highlight of Morristown . Great tour in and around the house where George Washington stayed during the war . Environment is very well preserved
Wonderful walk around the park.... especially nice during foliage season.
This place is pretty neat and is now the 3rd house that George Washington has stayed in that I have visited. The tour was nice and just like most GW houses it was simple. The visitors center is pretty neat, but plays the same video as the Jockey Hollow visitors center.
This is a great park for a walk or run in the woods. There are miles of trails and a park loop road in the Jockey Hollow section, which is connected to the Cross Estate Gardens and Jersey Brigade Area. The park overall combines natural scenery and areas for outdoor activities with historical features. Its a great place to spend an afternoon, with or without family.
Really amazing tour guide, Pam, was super informative, funny and friendly! Really interesting walking through the old Ford house where GW set up his temporary HQ, and learned about the struggle that ensued in sharing the house with all the servants, assistants, etc. The second floor of the house was closed due to COVID but it was still fun.
Walking along the paths taken by George Washingtons troops was very moving. We also saw Wick Farm gardens. Beautiful fall day!
Very well maintained place, beautiful and full of history. Love it.
Missed the tour of the grounds but the museum was great
No admission fee. It would be worth one.The furnishings are original to the period and at least one piece of furniture was here when Washington was here.
Charming area and beautifully maintained. It was closed when we arrived but even walking the grounds was fantastic. There is also a phone audio tour you can use. Wonderful to be in the steps of not just General George Washington but his wife Martha as well. So much history and suffering endured by so many to gain such freedom!
It was a nice place but it would be better in Springfield and Summer with plants blossoming. Still a nice day trip and a lot of walking.
Quite a beautiful park. Cross estate is a small place. See that as an afterthought.
I had no idea about this portion of history. Very unexpected information. Great place to visit with a tour and an interactive museum.
First time hiking a trail here. Pretty good trail for me and my pup. I did the blue trail which wasnt bad at all. Will be trying the white trail next go around, which I believe is around 6 - 7 miles long
Morristown is a great historical park. It can be seen completely in only and hour or two. Be sure to visit the museum at Washingtons headquarters. My two young boys loved the exhibits, especially the short videos and replica uniforms they could try on.
A good opportunity for learning a part of the American revolution. You can learn historically important details about Genaral Washingtons winter encampment in 1779.Watch the fifteen minutes video first and then see the replica hut inside the visitor center before heading out to the Wicks mansion. Plenty of hiking trails is a plus if you want to make your visit more enjoyable.
Unaware of the significance of Morristown in the Revolutionary War, this was a nice and informative visit. It a quick and interesting stop and dont miss Fort Nonsense for the views and interesting history.
I went to this place along with friends and family on a sunny day. This place is good for a day hike. There are several trails for hiking and most if them are easy to walk. The forest was lush green and it would definitely sooth body and mind. We went to visit the winter hut and found out how the American soldiers lead by George Washington, struggled and survived long winters during their fight for freedom from British rulers. This place is pet friendly and must visit.
State-of-the-art exhibits am really good staff as well as a small gift shop make this a great National Park. Its a little hard to find due to one way roads but well worth the effort. I enjoyed the coin and postcards that they had for sale as well is the nice T shirts. The exhibit were you have to make decisions as if you were George Washington and you have different officers giving you advice was a lot of fun. I cant say enough about the great the staff .
Great place to go for a walk. Take photos with the family and learn about American history. I would highly recommend this place for those who are and are not into history. A hidden gem in the Morristown area.
A great place for a quiet weekend activity. We stopped by to check out Jockey Hollow. On our way to the attraction we went through the visitor center, which is small but offers a video for visitors to watch, an example cabin, and a cute gift store selection. We purchase a National Park passport and got a stamp at the counter to keep track of our visit and future park visits! The park was super quiet, we practically had the place to ourselves. We definitely plan to come back to check out the many hiking trails throughout the woods.Everything is super clean and well maintained. Definitely worth a visit!
The hiking was beautiful and scenic through lush forest areas with mild elevation changes. Bring some bug repellent! Otherwise, the visit in mid July was highly enjoyable. I will return with more time, and will update this review to include info on the visitors center and more of the historical landmarks.
My wife and I took a lovely hike with our dog here. It is beautiful trail (we took the outerloop), well maintained and well marked. There are small creeks and ponds scattered throughout the hike, maps to keep you on the right path, view points with benches. We will definitely be returning again in the future!
Very nice park to go hiking and catch a glimpse of History.
If you love history this is a must go place. My kids enjoyed seeing history come to life by all the volunteers. I really enjoyed the historical reenactment of Washingtons encampment of Morristown during the American Revolutionary War. Plus it is free.
Large park with major historical significance. Washingtons troops overwintered here. Lots of walking trails
Wonderful history. The gift shop is reasonably priced. Clean restrooms. We were there for encampment weekend and the reenactment was pretty cool!
Tons of hiking trails for a variety of levels. The history and natural beauty of "Jockey Hollow " makes this a great place for a family outing.George Washington encamped here during the Revolutionary War, making this a place of historical significance in our nations history.
