Description
Al Mahatta Airport (Museum)It was my first visit to first airport in the region, built in 1932 and then turned into a museum highlighting the history of flight in the UAE and the region. It is an important landmark due to its unique collectibles that narrate the history of aviation from man’s first attempts to fly, to landing on the moon.It helps to explore the history of flight at the first airport in the UAE.The airport was used in 1930s as a staging post for commercial flight routes from Britain to India. The way they arranged the old flights, historical pictures, and shown how the wings of flights derived from bird’s wings are incredible. You will get the chance to watch a 15 minutes small movie related to the first airport. It’s an experience to know the history of UAE.

I love the way Sharjah preserves its heritage. This is one of the very first airports in the region. And now you can see most of the original aircraft used back then, displayed within the airport building itself. Gorgeous! Then you take a tour of everything that flies, from insects and birds, to prehistoric animals and humans. A beautiful trip into the past century

MoreA well preserved and informative gem of a museum in the heart of Sharjah . A must visit for those into history and aviation. Love their idea of incorporating everything in nature that takes fight . The prehistoric fossils were a big hit with my 8 yr old !
MoreThis Sharjah museum of aviation history has been fascinating ever since my first visit almost two decades back. Back then it was an unexpected find. A charming old world place preserving a piece of precious history. Mahatta means fueling station and this had been one for long haul flights from Britain to India. A video recording of those days is also played in one of the rooms. While those historical moments are to be savoured, one also leaves with a deep appreciation of human endeavours against a harsh climate required for the progress Sharjah and the UAE have achieved today.
MoreIf anyone interested in aviation studies, really helpful to them. Maximum 1 to 2 hr can spend inside. Reasonable ticket price. In city main location. Near by all facilities available. Parking free inside museum. Not crowded. Kids will enjoy.
MoreNice place for aircraft lovers

MoreA great place for those who want to know the history of aircraft operations.
No doubt, it’s Sharjahs hidden gem! Ideal for aviation fans and military personnel from the Royal Air Force (RAF). However, it has remained intriguing over the years. You can learn about the airports history from its beginnings to modern aviation at the new airport. The museum is housed in the first airport buildings of the UAE, where the first flight landed in 1932.The museum tells the tale of the first Royal Mail planes that came through, as well as the establishment of a Royal Air Force station to assist them. The museum hangar contains various early aircraft that played a role in the history of aviation in the Gulf region, including all types of aircraft that served with Gulf Aviation, which later became Gulf Air.There are also some intriguing artifacts from the RAFs days, such as an exhibition of the UAEs first cinema! To educate younger people, there are a variety of interactive and science-based elements relating to flight.Overall, its a fun little spot to kill a couple of hours.
MoreThis museum have very old airplanes, and all old equipments, we have to visit once in a life, we will come to know flights are then an now
MoreMahatta Fort is located in central Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. The fort was built by the Ruler of Sharjah in 1932 to afford protection for the passengers and staff of Imperial Airways. It was the first British establishment on the Trucial Coast, after an agreement was struck between the British government (on behalf of Imperial Airwaysand the ruler of Sharjah in June 1932. The Fort was used by the Royal Air Force in World War II and the Trucial Oman Scouts before briefly becoming a hotel, a police station and is now an aviation museum, known as Al Mahatta Museum.(Wikipedia)
MoreIncredible museum, excellently exhibited and clearly lovingly collected. Very interesting with plenty of information. Highly recommended for anyone even vaguely interested in aviation.

They had an ancient collection of all the instruments and things used by pilots and airport authorities, 7 or 8 decades ago. Many were new age interesting to watch and learn. The Bird and insect section was also presented in an excellent way.

There you can see the old planes and parts of them, you can also see old devices used in the flying field such as an humidity measure, the black box, a fire extinguisher, a pilots glove, a pilots notebook, and many more items. If you are interested in airplanes, this is definitely the place to go. Finally, as for the price it is 10AED for adults (13+), 5AED for children (2-12), and free for babies. I really recommend this place, come with your family and friends, and youll have a ton of fun.
MoreFasten your seatbelts and let us go back in time to the 1930’s: to the era of propeller planes. The Britons wanted to have a stopover for the flights between Britain and India. And so an agreement was made between the British and the rulers of Sharjah and this airport was built. In fact, it is said to be the first airport in the Middle East. “ Al Mahatta” in Arabic means a stop station so now we know where the names comes from. But hey, there is no airport without a runaway. So where did the runway go? Well, you will also find out that the runway has now become one of the main streets of Shajrah. You will find this information in the one of the drawings there.“Al Mahatta” remained in service as Sharjah’s airport until 1976.The museum does not accept credit card payments so make sure you bring cash (and preferably change as they didn’t have enough change). It’s 10 AED for adults, 5 AED for children between 2 and 12, and free for infants. We spent around 45 minutes there. So you might want to combine it with another activity such as lunch in Sahara Centre if you are coming to Sharjah especially for this.
MoreFirst time I have seen 1920 aircraft, very good inside view 2 pilots and 3 technical staff inside cockpit. It’s was really amazing experience to view cockpit closely. Two and four engine aircraft available in the display. Old engine, Tyers, analog telephone with eveready battery 1.5 watts big dry cell available here on display. Friendly staff and free parking available inside museum. Price is very less 2 - 12 year AED 5/- and above 12+ AED 10/-.

It has many of the famous and commonly used once upon a time aircrafts.Definitely would recommend

Very useful for kids and aviation enthusiasts. Fact that the museum building was the first airport in UAE earlier adds much more value. Free Car parking spaces available. MoreGreat little museum, smack dab in the middle of Sharjah city. Based around the Mahatta airport which is obviously now unused after the city built up around it and the larger Sharjah international airport was built. The old fort and airport building was converted into an Airplane museum and should definitely be visited to get an idea of how quickly things have changed in the region.Following the Google map location, the museum is located behind an immigration building. There is free parking located in the complex, the security guard at the gate will allow you access to that as soon as you drive up to the gate. Ticket prices are minimal and once inside you will be ushered into the main hangar along with a guide. He/she wont do much more than point you in the right direction. The main hangar contains a mix of older aircraft with a Dehaviland Comet being the main draw. You can sit in its cockpit and the interior seats of this ex gulf air aircraft. You will then be ushered through a long gallery of photos and a small aircraft themed museum. Finally if you ask you can be taken into a projection room with a video shot during the hay day of the airport and surrounds. Take a minute to see all the large buildings surrounding the museum and imagine how only 50 or slightly longer years ago none of what you see existed and how airplanes used to use this as a fuelling and overnight stop between flights travelling from England to the far East and beyond.
