Founded in 1874, no zoo in Switzerland is home to more animals, from gorillas to snow leopards.
Zoo Basel in Basel
Description
One of the best zoo we have been to. Everything was clean and animal were well kept.
MoreNot many kids screaming (its Switzerlandso its possible to do observation in peace. But the zoo itself is quite old-fashioned.
MoreFirst experience of Sunday brunch at the zoo. In one of the main rooms above the restaurant, good selection of really good food, fresh juices, prosecco, selection of breads and pastries and hot food too.Great location and great service.
MoreMost of the animals were not there, no employees speak English, the seal feeding show was too long and underwhelming.Construction everywhere during working hours.Totally not worth the visit.
MoreLooks beautiful, the animals seem well taken care of. plenty of sitting areas when tired from walking. Good eating places.
MoreNice zoo but 1/3 of the boxes were empty, no animals. Did not see the giraffe, lion, rhinoceros and few others.Would recommend visiting Zurich’s zoo instead.
MoreVery nice Zoo with a nice restaurant and plenty of trees for shade on hot days. Perfect for a family outing!
MoreGreat for a Sunday walk with friends
Could spend days in there. Love what they did with the elephant and hippos enclosures and the fact that the baby snow leopards were out in the sun today made it even more magical. Will be back.
MoreFantastic Zoo! Lots of space for kids to run and beautiful animals that are well taken care of. Highly recommend!
MoreGreat Enterprise which I hope will survive the battle for politically-corectness. Wonderful place for the kids, plenty of things to see and do. Needs to be seen.
MoreA beautiful zoo, well-kept enclosures. A perfect place for a Sunday outing with children. I was particularly taken with the meerkats 🥰
MoreA real gem in mid of the city to spend time with your family and friends. People usually comes here with food to enjoy picnic here. They have an area dedicated for fishes and coral reef which is s really good. Then they have elephant, Chimpanzee, Orangutan, Dolfins, Penguin, Chicken, Jungli Pig, snakes, mouse, Hippocampus, deer, Stag, goat, sheep, tortoise, giraffe, Zebra, Rhino, Lion and my favourite Cheetah. Somewhere they have mentioned about having a Kangaroo but couldnt locate one.Its a very big one so can be pretty tiring and hot so bring cap, umbrella and lots of water. One of the common problem which I found everywhere in Europe is missing directions for visitors so that they know which route to take so that they dont miss anything and also dont end up roam in circles. Also, it was super hot the day we visited so some arrangement for drinking water would have been better in the larger benefit of tourists.Tickets can be purchased here over the counter. I paid, if remember correctly, around 22-25 CHF which is a bit costly., Otherwise all good.Enjoy.
MoreI really really had a hard time seeing this poor animals away from there homeland , i will never comeback again and i f we want to see this lovely creatures we have to go there were they live and distribute for protect them from hunting , période 😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥
MoreVery beautiful zoo. I felt like I can touch the animals. Really clean and nice. 100% recommend visit this place.
MoreLovely zoo, plenty of wildlife and domestic animals to see. Lovely laid out. Good choice in food and decent prices.
MoreExcellent place to visit. We went in mid July. There is ample shade and places to rest and watch animals. A fantastic array of animals and many with their young. Gorilla and ape habitat is the best I have seen.Eat first and bring water, price of refreshments is high but expected.
MoreThis place can be much more, Ive seen better zoo in a lot of cities
A modern zoo, I had not been to a zoo in decades but was impressed with the mix of outdoor and indoor enclosures. Our babies were amazed by seeing a lion come to look at them through a glass wall ans seeing great apes in seemingly vast enclosures.
MoreThere was none of the important animals. We couldn’t see the big snakes, the lion, the cheetah and cubs, no giraffes. Elephants were far, low maintenance. Really disappointed! Please change the zoo name to park, there are only normal animals.
MoreAmazing zoo with all type of animals . Aquarium, insects , reptiles, birds and mammals. Well maintained. There is separate section for apes too . Inside zoo , you can have good food in restaurant too. Its best place for kids , spend time with your family. There are lots of different varieties of species. Aquarium and apes are my favourite one. Well maintained and cleaned one. Worth to visit this amazing zoo.
MoreGorgeous zoo with lots of shade and places to rest. You can see the animals inside and outside so theres almost always an opportunity to see everything.
MoreIf you love zoos, this one in Basel will not disappoint you. Vast, clean and very well maintained. The animals are placed in an environment as close as possible to their natural habitats. A place that makes children happy!
MoreAmazing wildlife hub with beautiful species ✅
Absolutely love this place. The number and selection of animals is quite good but the zoo has many interconnected walking paths you can take at your own desire. The food hall has a lot of selection including quite a few healthy options. The design and layout allows you to get pretty close to many animals. There are lots of benches all over so you can stop and rest at any point. Be sure to catch the walking of the Penguins during the colder months. Highly recommend!
MoreEasy access via #2 tram. Old zoo that appears to be blocked from further expansion. A few empty exhibits. Many quality exhibits of the usual animals. Needs signs showing "way out" in case of emergency due to circular designs of interconnected walkways. This is a world class zoo and I am glad I visited.
MoreNice place to spend a full day with kids
Wonderful place. Peaceful and beautiful. Especially I liked fish.
Just perfect. Wonderful respect for the animals.
This is an amazing place. I have never seen a rhino :D The Zoo itself looks like a jungle. High grass. Trees and bushes everywhere. I suppose it makes animals feel better - like theyre in their natural environment. Once you buy a ticket you get a map of the zoo. It is almost accurate. Paths are ok but not all animals are marked there. However its not a big inconvenience. We treated it as a surprise. Great place for a family trip, even with a stroller. It took us about 2 hours to see everything.
MoreNice and cozy ZOO. Amazing swimming pool for penguins allows to see them swimming in the water. A lot of trees protect from sunshine even at the very hot days visitors, as well as the animals.
MoreZoo Basel must be one of my alltime favorite places to go in switzerland! The atmosphere is so calming and cheerful, it feels like walking trough a park filled with animals rather than visiting a zoo. Nature is well preserved, always a good choice to go:)
MoreFantastic zoo in Basel close to the city centre. Very family friendly and children are allowed to touch some animals. There is feeding of sea lions at 4pm with seats around the pool to watch it.The zoo is beautifully laid out with lots of different areas for each type of animal.Has an amazing restaurant and cafe at very reasonable prices. You can also bring your own food and have a small picnic in some areas but PLEASE make sure you do not feed any animals. You should allow at least 4 hours so you can enjoy the zoo at a relaxed pace - with young kids you might even spend the whole day there. Definitely worth a visit.
MoreThe zoo has many different species, we also saw the African wild dogs, which arent that common in zoos. At the moment theres a big renewal concerning the birds, the new enclosures will open soon. If youre in Basel, I think its a nice way of spending a couple of hours. Some enclosures show the signs of time, but it looks like changes are underway.
MoreThis medium-sized, family-oriented zoo is centrally located in Basel. Animals are not geographically arranged but clustered by groups, for example in the "monkey house", youll find African and South American monkeys side by side. As all the enclosures are quite small, visitors can see the animals up close. Extensive aquarium and terrarium section. Average visiting time is around 3-4h. Good self-service restaurant on site.
MoreGreat experience and a fantastic location. Lots of animals to see that seem really happy. Not to busy and the flow is well. It’s worth the trip and experience. Not expensive if you get the family pass. Thank you.
MoreIt is a pretty zoo with many lovely animals, the best attraction is the pinguin walking next to you :perfect for children and everything can be seen in less than 3,4hours. But I would not say that it is bigger than in Zurich :)
MoreAccommodating personnel, great zoo presentation in a good price. Can also dine inside the zoo. The aquarium is amazing! Also the monkey collections. The rhino were also nice, elephant show, worth to spent 3-4 hours !
MoreAnimals are treated well. Altough cages have been renovated, they are still too small for the big animals.
MoreLike every human I have my moral doubts about the idea of putting animals into cages, in countries they arent used to be. However this isnt the place to discuss this matter.I hadnt been to a zoo in quite some time, so I found myself filled with quite some joy, when I entered the "Basel Zoo". I started with the "aquarium" section, filled with beautiful fish and transforming into terrariums filled with snakes and alikes. I can only recommend to start the walk through the Zoo like this. Also bring some time if you want to see the whole Zoo! It is quite big, and I might have gotten lost once or twice (little thing they could to better, the signs. It was a little hard to know directions in there)
MoreVery clean and well maintained zoo. The animals are in a good shape. It is not very big, in 3, maximum 4 hours you can visit it.
MoreGreat zoo - not too big not too small. We love going there with my kids 2 and 4 yo. We also went there without kids and we will continue going as its a great place to do various activities, starting obviously with observing and learning about animals, having lunch and an ice cream or playing on the playground! It’s possible to meet up with other parents and enjoy time all together! (last Sunday when we visited the zoo in the reptile section it was quite crowded and people didn’t follow the distancing rules. This is just a side comment as of course you can choose to leave what we in fact did).We are regular visitors and will continue coming!
MoreVery good zoo in the city center. Variant animals, that connot be found in other zoos. 1 day is good enough. One drawback i felt is that less space for animals to roam around
MoreUnlike in Asia or America, you dont find enclosed parks in Switzerland. Zoo can function that way, if you can become a member just for taking those routine walks, then its worth walking amidst the greenery. The path is relatively flat for most parts of the zoo.
MoreA rainy day in November? You want to experience a very different atmosphere and mood? Visit the Zolli Basel - the zoo !!There are many remarkable aspects, besides the park like setting, the continuous care, the zoo striving to make most out of the given options in the available area. Many animals are well known a beloved by kids and adults.Check it out yourself, are have a peek on the pictures and videos.🙈
MoreI have a good experience here. A real beautiful place for a family vizit. It is not big, but enough for 5-6 hours to vizit. The restaurant from inside (the middle onehave usually prices, and the food it is acceptable, not the best, but not the baddest. The WC, in the restaurant, clean. Souvenirs are expensive, but its a Zoo, after all, they need money.
MoreIts an average size zoo. Unfortunately when I visited the zoo it was raining so I couldnt spot all the animals. As there is this covid situation going on, there are no feeding shows. But I could see the Gorilla and lions from the glass this was the best experience. I had never seen a lion from this close. The sea lions were quite entertaining though. The aquarium is also good, I was expecting a octopus as well but it wasnt there. The washrooms were clean, restaurant were good. And theres also drinking water fountains.
MoreWe very much enjoyed our visit. With elephants, rhinos, hippos, lions and giraffes, the zoo had pretty much all you want to see, with perhaps the exception of Tigers. The enclosures are brilliant (large indoor and outdoor viewing areas), and it was not too crowded.
MoreI was very impressed by how the Basel zoo looks like. This is how a zoo should look like. Great condition for the animal. I saw many of the zoos in my country Romania and none can rise to the level of this one in Basel. Congratulations to all who have been involved in organizing the zoo in Basel. Ypu did a great job.
MoreAn excellent zoo, well organised. Happy to see animals kept in good conditions. Map clear to follow. And drinks and refreshments reasonably priced (for Swiss standards).Easy on the pocket as well, with the basel card giving buy one get one free on entrance.
