Carretera a Palenque- Zona Archaeologica Km. 8, 29960 Palenque, Chis., Mexico, Villahermosa
Ruins of this ancient Maya city-state are a well-known archaeological site & tourist destination.
Beautiful and Astonishing.By far one of the most amazing Matan archeological sites I have been too ( a few ). Food vendors outside are very good and delicious. I recommend getting a guide, sunglasses, sunscreen, comfortable shoes and clothing. Its hot and humid (Its in the middle of Lacandona Jungle).
One of the most beautiful places to visit. We took a guided tour both in jungle and out in the open.Very impressive and highly recommended.
Extremely beautiful and powerful experience. We took the 2 hour tour with Rubi the local guide in English and he was FANTASTIC!We loved every second with him and the stories and knowledge he shared with us.Highly recommended!(And thanks again Rubi)
Great day out. Excellent lookout spots and some great souvenirs.
Our visit to the ruins 100% exceeded my expectations, and what made it so amazing was our local Indigenous guide Juan - or ‘Mak’ in Tzeltal (+529161288496).Juan had so much knowledge about the history, the region, the flora and the ruins. It was an experience we would not have had on one of the “official tours”.He took us on a walk right into the jungle, showed us all different types of native plants, sacred trees, natural medicines and natural paints made of plants that the Mayans used to paint the pyramids and are still growing wildly there. He also speaks a fair amount of English so it’s perfect for those English speakers who want to practice their espanol! Plus it only costed us 200 MXN each.I told him I would leave a review & his number because I was so impressed by his tour, and he agreed. Cannot recommend more!
Really enjoyed this site and learning more about the Mayan buildings. Be prepared to pay twice to enter this location which was a little strange.
Incredible Place! Absolutely to be seen once in a lifetime!!
We went to 3 ruins while in the Mexico / Guatemala region - Palenque, Teotihuacan and Tikal. This was by far the best - mainly aided by our incredible guide Ronnie. If you can find him, pay him. It is so worth it. The ruins themselves are incredible in their own right, but having the tonnes of extra information we were provided was priceless. Going into the jungle (only accessible with guidewas extremely interesting. You can see all that has not been unearthed and maybe even get to try some termites - they taste like carrots!
Definitely one of the most impressive archaeological zones in Mexico, although the government no longer invests in its maintenance... abusive tour guides and the staff that work there treat visitors with little respect.
The site is amazing and beautiful. You can feel the energy here. Come early because it is to hot after 10.30 in the morning and way to many tourists. Be aware for the many fake guides and if you take a guide negociate hard for a good price.
Amazing experience… I suggest taking drinks before planning on going.
A beautiful and large mayan archeological site in Palenque Chiapas. Having visited other Mayan and Aztec ruins this one stands out by its vast size. It can be extremely hot, although I was fortunate it was a quazi-clouded day that helped. Lots of souvenir artifacts for sale by vendors, but do buy water outside as you can only purchase that outside of the Archeological Site. You will definitely want to stay hidrated. Unfortunately one cannot go inside of the largest ruin anymore and climb down the steps, but when i was little I remember we had done that.
Beautiful, we had a tour guide highly recommend getting one
Beautiful Mayan ruins of a sun temple and the tombs of king and queen. Tour guides available. There is a walking path but a significant portion of the ruins would be hard to reach if you cant walk off the path on flat ground.
A wonderful experience! Please request a tour from Mr. Victor Hernandez, he has been working there for at least 40 years. His knowledge of the pyramids, and Mayan culture is outstanding. He describes things as if he was there when it happened. I can tell he truly cares about this park and its history. He is a living Mexican National Treasure. Please take you time to request a tour with Mr. Hernandez.
This is a must experience if you can, and it is more accessible than we thought, there are also local porters for hire that can help with wheelchair access.
I mean, its pretty damn cool. Just dont get the guide. Theyll try and sell it to you for 2300 pesos, then drop it to 1300 pesos with a jungle tour which we accepted. It was cool and interesting, but not worth the price Id say. Plus you dont get to explore the jungle that much, you could easily get in there and follow the path yourself.
A must see attraction when visiting Chiapas. Very educationaland interesting. .
‘No Pasar’ is what you seem to come to everywhere. They are cool ruins in the jungle with sounds of the howler monkeys around, but it seems half of it is closed and you can’t go to any viewpoints anymore.
Highly recommend a tour of the jungle with Sebastian if you speak little Spanish he speaks several languages but not only that he has done it for a along time gives you lots of great information about ruins sites, trees, wildlife, and very kind the ruins are great to see too lots of people along selling things. Get bug spray if you didn’t bring your own they sell it there. Also water if not they sale it there for 30 pesos at one of the first venders . There is a restaurant with good service and good coffee.
Pretty stunning ruins. Guides are expensive at the gate but get cheaper the more you go into the park - don’t pay more than $500 for one. If you’re on a budget a guide isn’t necessary there are lots of great info boards that describe the history. Takes about 90 mins to wander around. It’s HOT though bring some water for sure
The ruins are simply amazing! We went early in the morning around 8 by collectivo from town center (20 pesos per person). There are two entrances for the ruins, the first one which is next to the museum/ticket centre and the main one 1,5km further up the road, where all the organised buses stops and the tours starts.Since we went on our own, the collectivo dropped us off on the ticket centre/museum where you have to buy two types of tickets - one for entry into the national park and then another queue for the entry in the actual archeological site of Palenque. 180 pesos altogether.(as of March 2022)After we got the tickets we returned on the main road and started walking up the road toward the first entrance. We decided to enter the site from there, instead of walking 1,5km on the road for the main entrance. That was the right choice and we highly recommend that approach, since that part of the site is literally in the jungle, the ruins are surrounded by it, there is a cascade waterfall Sombrillas and small suspension bridge. There were no people at all, all we could hear was the jungle and the river running. It was so Indiana Jones we even got a bit scared, by the wildness and absence of people at all. There were some signs showing direction, but the overall feeling was excitement, as if you are in the jungle on your own. There were guys providing guide services at the entrance, but we chose not to have one. The signs are in English as well, so there is some information, but if you feel you need a guide you can hire from the entrance. After probably 30min being alone we started seeing people coming ahead, who have entered from the main entrance. We explored all the site, there were plenty of vendors selling all kind of stuff, the prices of which were probably the cheapest we have seen in mexico. We would recommend you do your buying there (or from the market at Agua Azul), you can haggle as well. Just for info we bought a medium sized colourful skull pained on a leather piece for 700pesos in Cancun. Similar size pieces were around 200 pesos at the site (after haggling).Another thing, there is a shop next to the ticket centre which sells legit chiapas amber at very reasonable prices. We bought a very nice piece for 85 pesos.
Awesome to see. Don’t be surprised if you’re offered magic mushrooms (on the waythere. There’s quite some vendors selling souvenirs within the premises too.
UNESCO site, must see if in the area. Had Francisco as a guide, did both the jungle and ruins tour, well worth it. Since covid, one cannot climb the ruins, and thats ok. We were on site for six hours, but can be done in four.
Great. So much better than Uxman. Similar league as Coba for me (skipped Chichén Itzà). The jungle backdrop is the real star, the ruins just add some spice and mystery. Its a crying shame however how they built those ugly fences into the temple openings, no understanding of astethics at all. The price at slightly below $200 seems fair. There are quite a few people selling their trinkets inside the temple grounds, not just at the entrance. Not aggressively, but I still think this should not be allowed. People comment its better to go there in the morning. While I cant compare, I am positive the picture below is much better in the evening light, when I was there (16:40, mid-february ).
Extremely interesting please. Great city with interesting architecture. So nice atmosphere in jungle. Really nice place to just walk around. But suddenly all the main buildings are closed. Governance of the place is extremely poor. They hate tourists in here.
Awesome place to visit. Make sure you go into jungles too (there are plenty of local guides inside the place that can get you there safely)
Only is knowing the 2% of all the ruins area most part is cover by the jungle and even that way still is an amazing place to know...
One of the best Maya sights! You need one and a half hour minimum to walk around and enjoy and you should hire an official guide for about 1000.-, they know a lot of interesting stories and also the best way and places to go. Dont miss this.
Beautiful and vast Mayan zone, with a lot of buildings to discover.Bear in mind, that you actually need to pay for two tickets (90p to access the reserve and 80p for actual ruins entranceand that are are a lot of people trying to sell you their stuff, which spoils the experience a bit.
This site is impressive! I had the pleasure of meeting some of the archeologists and they were WONDERFUL!!!! I recommend wearing sneakers, sunscreen, a hat, and bug repellant, as well as go first thing in the morning. Be prepared to walk.
Must visit. They do have some weird COVID rules in place, that dont make sense. For example, the museum, which houses some really important items found in these tombs, is only open 2 days a week. Thursdays and Fridays. What?! Makes complete sense 🤦.These pyramids are also off limits. You could only watch them from below. They dont let you interact, climb etc.Overall, beautiful site thats worth visiting. And get a guide. Guides are crucial in sites like these.
Probably the most beautiful Mayan ruins in Yucatan and Chiapas. Come early, leave for lunch and return before closure, you maybe there almost alone
Beautiful historical site! Only about 10% of site is excavated, the rest is covered in jungle. You can see howler monkeys and iguanas relaxing throughout the area. It takes about 1.5hrs to go through unless you take your time looking through the artisan market. Cost is $90 peso entrance paid at the museum down the road (it may cost more if you enter with a professional camera).
This archaeological site was my highlight in my tril to Mexico. Surrounded by a rainforest it looks like it is from another world. When you get there, many will try to sell you guided tours, for which the price is around 50-100 euro per group. If you are alone, or with a small group and this price is too much you can definitely find the information beforehand on internet so research before because it is worth it. However, getting a guide gives you a safe acces into the rest of Palenque city, which is covered in rainforest making the whole tour a unique experience.
This was my favorite of all the Mayan sights on Mexico. We hired a guide at the gate and he did not disappoint. The 1.5 hour tour was very informative. We did a tour of the ruins and the jungle. There were almost no other tourists in the park. I really love the layout of this site. $90 pesos to get in. Howler monkeys all day long.
When we parked the car at the entrance, some guy approached us demanding money to „watch“ our car. It remained unclear what will happen, if we chose not to pay. So we did. Not a pleasant experience. Inside all the buildings were fenced off. It was not possible to go in or climb up the pyramids, like it used to be. Rather disappointing.
Very impressive archeological site of a former Mayan city. The buildings are exceptionally well preserved or restored, especially considering that all this once was covered by the surrounding jungle. As others have already mentioned, you can get English-speaking guides here and that is certainly recommended. They are very friendly and knowledgable.
Definitely pay for a guide, we found an official one for $400 pesos for a private tour with my husband, and gave her a tip as she was amazing. If you go without a guide you’ll just see the ruins and not know any of the information. She also showed us some of the jungle which we wouldn’t have done alone. Third time I’ve been here I love it!
I paid for a guidebwho spoke English and Spanish. She was very informative and knowledgeable about Palenque. It was hot but we took water with us. It was so beautiful and locals who are of Mayan descent sold handcrafted items.
Best Mayan ruins in Mexico. It has an amazing history, ruins are located in the middle of jungle (its the only jungle in Mexico). We dont take guides very often but in this place it was totaly worth it!
The best Mayan ruins Ive seen so far, better than Chichén Itza, Coba, and Tulum in my opinion. The sheer scale of the buildings is amazing and I love how the trees have been cleared around the surrounding area so you can imagine how the city looked like during those times, as opposed to it being completely overgrown like other ruins. Theres also a hill you can go up and look over the palace from above.
Amazing place! Sadly, werent able to climb the piramids due to the pandemic but still very enjoyable.
Beautiful and peaceful. Climbing on them is closed now due to covid. 😔 When we got there early morning the ticket office wasnt open even though it should have been already, so they let us pass with half ticket. 😃🤷 They were cutting grass on site which spoiled the quiet nature experience, but luckily they took a break, so we could enjoy the moment. Still impressive place with plenty of shade around. Best enjoyed with a guide.
A very recommendable place in my opinion. You pay a total of 170 Pesos (7€for the entrance of the whole park (jungleand entracne to the Maya-Ruins. "Collectivo" from Palenque Busstation are 20 Pesos (0,90€).Huge Maya Temple. Looks really impressive. Just check the pics.#factsfirsthandMany greetings,Max
The site itself is absolutely fantastic. Just bear in mind that if you go during the pandemic, you cannot enter the buildings, so the visit is somewhat frustrating. If you take a tour guide, do haggle. At first they ask for 1300mxn but as you approach the entrance the price drops to 400.
Beautiful Mayan ruins! The site was located in lush forest, with several rivers and waterfalls. The archeological site itself quite large and the ruins well preserved. Entrance is MXN$ 80. Its easy to take a collectivo from Palenque for MXN$ 20!
These ruins will not disappoint! What I really enjoyed about Palenque is that the ruins are located on a hilly area within the jungle, so you will also enjoy a pleasant hike/walk (depending on the route you choose to takethrough the forest. The ruins themselves seem to be from a later period as they are adorned with a lot of detail and advanced architecture. There are many picture-worthy spots and the site is quite large so the tourists usually disperse. 80 pesos entrance fee is quite adequate, I would say.
Awesome experience, you can explore inside of most of the ruins. Surroundings are jungle kind. Locals charge you up to 200 pesos for a guided tour, in Spanish, I don’t know about English.
These ruins are by far the most striking we went to... The jungle adds a whole other side to it..! They are so beautfiul and peaceful and it wasnt too crowded when we went. Love it... It was hot though and lots of steps, wear trainers and not sandals!!
