Zandy's Steak Shop - Cheesesteak restaurant in Allentown, United States
Exceptional flavor. Great service. 👍🏻However, the cheesesteak itself was undersized, lacked sufficient cheese, and the bread was particularly unremarkable. 👎🏼* Still, it seems to be the ONLY Lehigh cheesesteak with a real Umami punch! Truly quite yummy 😀
Sign on the door… “takeout only for lunch”. Next sign, Cash Only. It’s 2022. Time to adapt!
Good food, cash only experience. Fries and cheesesteaks were great!
Not too many good places left to get a good cheesesteak but I definitely recommend Sandys they fill them up its its like twice to meet three times to meet up somewhere else
Zandys gives you that old school restaurant feeling. They have amazing California Burgers my absolute favorite in the Allentown area. They also have amazing chocolate shakes. The service is always very welcoming.
Enjoyed the food and atmosphere, waitress was very friendly and helpful.Nothing much has changed on the inside, Enjoyed the old time look actually
We were from out of state and we were just visiting. The service and food was great. When we ever come back, will definitely stop there again.
Great steak/cheesesteak sandwiches, hamburger and cheesburgers along with French Fries/Pierogies - you wont be disappointed with anything you select. Cash Only - does have an ATM
Best cheesesteaks around! Its rare to find a shop that offers hot cherry peppers as a topping, so they get an A++ in my book!
Drove about a half hour to try a cheese steak from Zandys for the first time. They certainly didnt skimp on the steak. The roll was packed full along with onions, sauce and pickles. Overall it was good. The only thing is it was a little to salty. Other than that no complaints.
Absolutely love Zandys, visit every time Im in the Allentown area. Cash only, ATM on-site. Sandwich runs you $8-$9. Their steaks with toppings are the best! Theyve been around since 1940.
Delicious!! Got 2 tasty cheesesteaks and 1 set of pierogies and they were perfectly done. CASH only - but youll get the best steak sandwich in the Lehigh Valley
Had the cheesesteak and pierogies which were all very good!! We ate in the restaurant.
Old school, nostalgic place that hasnt changed in decades, nor should it. This was my first time there and it reminded me of going to a steak joint as a kid. As far as the food goes, its probably one of the top 3 steaks Ive ever had. It was really that good.
The steak sandwich dont taste as good as it used to.
Absolute favorite! 💗 loooooovvve yall!! Ed, Jeff, Patti HUUUGE HUGS
Its been so long and am i glad I went..... delicious Steak sandwich and great fries!
Cant help but love the local gems you find along the way. Great, friendly people and a very good sandwich. The meat way superb and mixed beautifully with the cheese and onions. To be honest, the bread wasnt much to my liking, but when you get such a mouthful of juicy, tender meat with every bite, its a minor nuisance at best. Will definitely be a stop next time Im in the area.
I hadnt been to Zandys for years but, I used to bring out of town company for cheesesteaks when they came for visits. We placed our order by phone on a Sunday mid afternoon, maybe that was the problem?I specifically asked for a PLAIN cheesesteak, as I planned to use some of the leftover meat to hide my dogs medication that night. The person who took my order confirmed "Meat, roll, cheese, right?"Yes.We also ordered a chili cheese dog, plain hot dog, and pierogies. The place was nearly empty when we went to pick up the order. The staff was very nice, apologized for the wait for the chili. On the way home I opened the bag and the cheese steak was so greasy it leaked through two wraps and the side of the bag. Once home and unwrapped I patted the leftover grease and then I noticed onions mixed in the meat. What the??Beyond that the meat was if it had been on the grill for hours. It was grease mixed with old meat.I tried a bite and it wasnt good, and thats putting it mildly.I picked off the onions and tried to give my dog a bit of the meat. He sniffed it and wouldnt eat it! Wow!The chili cheesedog and plain hot dog were both fine. The pierogies tasted like they were reheated-soggy and terrible. What happened to the place that used to have phenomenal steak sandwiches???I hate to toss out food, especially when everything is so expensive but the cheesesteak had to go. How sad.
Delicious! Family owned local steak shop. Been eating here since Im a kid. Reasonable prices, awesome food! They treat you like family. Best Cheese steaks, fries and perogies!
Some of the best cheesesteaks in Allentown and great chicken tenders as well, good service. Cash only!
Went their after many years for sandwich’s and sides.Steaks were very tasty and filling. They use good quality meat so we understand beef prices skyrocketing.Sides were good . Still same inside, but main thing was sandwich’s .No lemonade and ice tea was from powder taste like horrible. Will recommend for what they are known for.Steaks
My Dad brought me here years ago as a kid. Just stopped in for the first time in 20 years or so, and was pretty disappointed. The steak was very soggy and really didnt impress me taste wise.
Cheese steak was horrible Im from Philly so I was new to the area and wanted a steak so bad Im pregnant and was craving super heavy. I got my steak but it was nasty and cold. Was highly disappointed .
Over all good, I wish I had eaten there instead of to go. I think it might have gotten 5 stars in restaurant. Their default comes with sauce and pickles which I declined. The fries were very fresh.
Amazing! Exactly the same as when I was a little girl and would come here with my Nana and Pop! Definitely a must try if you’re in the area. Everyone is so friendly here as well!
I have been going to Zandys during trips to Allentown to visit family my whole life. I hadnt been for about 5 years but finally made it back. Its still as good as I remember.I get a cheesesteak with extra cheese, onions, cherry peppers, and pickles. This time I ate two since it had been so long. I had to eat fast to trick my brain that I wasnt full yet because each has so much meat inside.
Traveling from out of town and blindly stopped here. Cheesesteaks were huge, pierogies were fried and tasty, shrimp was perfect. The lady running it was so incredibly nice. Would definitely eat there often if I was local. Make sure you bring cash!
Always great steak sandwiches along with the perogies. I have been going to Zandies for probably 50 of my 60 years give or take a couple of years.
Oh man! Best chicken cheesesteak Ive ever had! My daughter had a cheesesteak and said it was the best shes ever tasted in her life. 😆 Sooo good. Friendly service. Crazy good prices.
Cant wait to go back....I am not a red meat person. I did order the Chicken cheese steak, the best chicken cheese steak I ever had. The owner is great and also the cook. Highly recommend.
Nice little shop. The owner/cook was very friendly and funny. Chicken cheese steak was out of this world. Definitely going back.
Got there super late. Cherry peppers very tangy and have some heat so be careful. I love the pickles and peppers edition the Italian was flavorful. And they use flavor ful meat Im thinking ribeye. Give it a whirl. There is no handicap access that I saw. Also when they close at 8: 00pm they mean 7:30 LOL.
Zandys is an icon in Allentown. We live out of state but eat at Zandys at least once on every trip back to our roots. Love their original cheesesteak sandwich and pierogis. Heather is a fast and friendly server. All around great experience.
First time I try this place. Spicy, and fulfilling. Well balanced sauce, acid and spicy enough to kick the classic cheesesteak into something much more interesting. The place itself is a jewel from a past era. Really an old school experience. Highly recommend it.
Ive been eating here since I was a kid. In my opinion they are the best steaks around. They use to be larger but I understand the price of the meat has gone up. They may be small but they are packed. Hard to eat but so delicious. I dont live close enough but we try to eat there as much as we can. Not very full usually when I have been there. I feel safe. I keep my mask on and only remove it to eat.
The food was so good. Didnt know i would be charged 45 cents For 3 very small squares of lettuce, 1 small slice of tomato 🍅, and some mustard. The HB was so good though. My husband said his steak sandwich was very good. He use to eat here when he was younger. He said it hadnt changed.
An excellent steak sandwich. Cooking done by the owner. I tried the steak sandwich classic with cheese and without cheese, and hot peppers. They do put a house made sauce on it (optional- I liked it and customers I saw liked it - but if your a cheese steak purest you may want to taste it first. Roll was super fresh. Made to order.Restaurant is no frills. Clearly popular with the locals, young And old. Place has has not changed much since it opened in 1940, which I like. To go and sit in. I sat at the counter.Prices: Burgers start at $2:95, Steak sandwichs $7:10, Chicken steak sandwich $710. Haddock fish sandwich $4:70 Tuna hoagie $4.70 Made a fresh pot coffee for me.Giving it five stars because for what it is, it is excellent. A no-frills steak sandwich shop. Cash only.
Always a trip back thru time at this place....great food and good service and prices that remind you of the good old days😁
A third generation icon for the cheesesteak. Youd better hurry though,... after the grandson that is running it now is gone, its gone. The cheesesteak was great! The atmosphere was classic. I loved learning a lil of the history of this place. Im glad we stopped for supper here, and hope to do it again before its gone.
The service was very friendly, but the cheese steak was a letdown. The roll looked like a hotdog bun and the same size. The meat was so-so, all the cheese was on one side and the onions were barely cooked and all to the outside instead of being more mixed together so you only really get a bite of one thing at a time. At over $7 it didnt even come with a side or drink.
Fantastic old school venue with delicious favorites but the cheesesteak is what its all about. Friendly service and very reasonable!
Awesome Lehigh Valley style cheesteaks (ie. with tomato-based sauce).
Found a Groupon special; wanted to check it out. Was a bit of a challenge to find the place; parking is on an angle. (Come down St Johns Street with endless cars behind you and then need to whip the car in a diagonal space outside the restaurant. Backing out when leaving was a bit challenging!)I ordered cheese steak and french fries then sat at one of the small tables surrounded by 4 chairs. A typing paper sized menu was propped against the salt and pepper shakers on each table. Football game on the TV, me and one other patron inside. The ambiance jetted me back to a better day when things were simpler and Common Sense was common.I didnt wait long for the order; did a take out.I asked for hot peppers on the cheese steak and I got the REAL THING!! (If hot is your spice of life, these peppers are calling you!!!). The sandwich was fantastic; I didnt feel bloated or weighed down after eating this one. The fries were moist, kind of like eating strips of baked potatoes. Took along an Orange Crush as part of my order.Glad that the Groupon Special was available; I mayve never stopped by to visit a great feel of the past!!!Zandys would be on a list of Allentowns best kept secrets.
Zandys Allentown PA. Family owned since 1940. Do yourself a favor and go to Sandys. The pictures on the walls are worth the trip. Mike Schmidt, Chuck Bednarik & Dom DeLuise to name a few. Oh, by the way, you also get a very good Cheesesteak for under $7. I would repeat that line but I used that line in yesterdays post. Its a small cheese steak but it is $7. Its on the Pennsylvania Dutch soft roll. This was the second stop on my day with @mikeyyyeatz in the Lehigh Valley. He got everything on his cheesesteak including the hot peppers. I got everything minus the hot peppers. This is a place you put on your Cheesesteak bucket list and one day when youre up bouncing around the Lehigh Valley you stop in and step back in time.
Always feel like family when you come to eat here. Theres nothing wrong with basic food if its delicious, especially when paired with thick, creamy, irresistible milkshakes.
A little bit pricey for what you get in my opinion.Chocolate shake was good, tasted like chocolate frosty from Wendys 🤣.Pork sandwich was good but really spicy, I couldnt eat it. I asked before ordering if it was, because I dont eat anything spicy. They said it wasnt. That made me feel sad.The cheese steak was really good, but be aware that also it has condiments.Fries were awesome and crispy. French fries and onion rings were fried at the moment.
Excellent food but the building can use updating and management can improve. Our sandwiches were excellent and were some of the best steak sandwiches weve had. It was eerily quiet when we were there but the people working there were warm. The owner was cooking and he seemed genuinely happy to know we were happy.A coat of paint, a sign directing waitress service, and a little atmosphere would make this place a foodie tourist trap.
After hearing all the talk, thought Id try. Left the tip of a lifetime cause Ill never go back. Had burger and a cheese steak and fries. Burger tasted like frozen Pattie. Hardly any garnish and bland. Fries were good but also out of frozen aisle. Cheese steak tasted like a white castle hamburger. Which is fine if youre having a white castle hamburger. Not sure what the "beef" was. The bright side though dim was the bread was good. Was with a date who had been there back when she was s kid, she was disappointed to say the least. To make up for destroying childhood memory, we went home and cooked her dinner. Handmade burger and real steak cheese steak and hand cut fried. Gets two stars because bread was very good. Ill have to hunt down that Baker.
Love coming here my mom was raised in Allentown and has loved Zandys and passed it on to us. We are not even local and will travel just to get there cheesesteaks. Always love them and the staff is always very nice and they get the food out quick even for a whole family of 6.
