You Don Ya in Toronto
Description
Privilege
I like their selection of dons, my friends and i got the Hamachi nabe, karaage Don and the pork katsu Don. The karaage Don is a huge serving! The seasoning on the Hamachi nabe is very tasty, and all 3 dishes were very filling
MoreVery nice interior, reasonably priced and generous portions. Karaage don was good, chirashi don was a huge disappointment. Service was great, everyone was quite polite.
MoreFirst time going to this restaurant and I have to say the service and the portion of food is really decent especially if you are really hungry. The portion and serving of meat was very generous compared to other Japanese places ive eaten at.
MoreI had a great dinner today!I had the karubi Don, with a miso soup, along with chicken wings! It was all delicious!I would return and try other meals for sure!
MoreWent as a group of 4, seating was available on a Sunday at 2pm. Pictured is the Gyu Don (beef and onions on rice), Chicken Katsu Don (fried chicken cutlet over rice), and Bacon Steakie Fire Don (spicy pork belly over ricewith kimchi and sweet potato sticks.+ Very tasty and quick.+ Straightforward menu with pictures.+ Splendid service and very polite staff members.+ Average-ish portions.+ Sweet Potato Sticks have a good crunch and nice seasoning.- A tad on the pricey side for whats being offered.
MoreOverall I’d say it’s tasty but I agree with other reviewers in that if you have a healthy appetite, it will not fill you unless you get the add/ons or appetizers. My friend ordered the salmon and I got the med-rare beef rib. It’s all served on a bed of rice. Protein wise it’s a good size portion. You’re looking at $20 pretax for each meal. There’s a few options around $15.She liked her salmon and the beef was very good. Tasted like a steak sliced up. She’s a small eater so it was perfect and I wasn’t starved so it was perfect. If I was super hungry for sure I would of needed an appetizer.Things I wasn’t crazy about:It’s rather noisyTables are close together but likely just my Covid induced paranoia. It wasn’t too busy. And service was quick.Overall a very good experience and worth returning to.
MoreFirst time here. Recommended by a friend of mine.Got sweet potato fries which were very tasty and had a hint of sweetness on the batter as well. Came with a nice tangy dipping sauce.Forgot to take a picture of my main which was Karubi Don (Boneless Angus Beef Short Rib, Onion). The meat was very tender and cooked to a nice medium. The sauce was delicious. I would definitely order it again.Definitely better than average and is a great comfort food. Will be happy to explore the rest of the menu in the future.
MoreOverall, good food for a decent price!! Everything was cooked well and it tasted fresh. The fried chicken was probably the best thing we ate! I say you try it out if you’re looking for a quick meal.
MoreBeef in a savory-sweet sauce,I like to top it off with a spring egg, garnish with some chopped scallion for colors and freshness. It tastes great.
MoreGreat atmosphere; Good Gyudon; Tataki was a bit bland
I am a regular customer here, and although I will admit that my review is biased (I always get the same order, the Karaage Don... so I cant speak on any other dishesI will say that this restaurant is AMAZING.Dining in is always a good experience, although it can get busy in the evenings, which means you may have to wait 5-10 minutes to get seated. The washrooms are always very clean, the employees are friendly, portions are generous, prices are reasonable (mid-rangeand the food quality is consistent. I personally like the music, but if you dont like moderately loud music, then dining in isnt for you.Take out is great too- they take the time to separate some of the ingredients so that your food isnt soggy once it arrives. This is a detail that I really appreciate.
MoreWe went to You Don Ya on Dundas St at an early dinner time, it was quite empty so we got a seat right away. The menus and utensils were prepared on the table when we got there and our server got us water right away.We ordered the Aburi Salmon Don ($16.59), the salmon was perfectly seared, just enough sauce with lots of tobiko. We also got the Ton-Toro Don ($15.89which had a lot of pork jowl meat and well seasoned. In general, the portion size is quite small so good for people that don’t eat too much, but I don’t think it would fill someone who eats a lot. I would say the price is also on the higher end for the portion size; around $20 after tax and tip if you dine in. But, the quality of the meat and fish are really good, everything was delicious, and our waiters were very attentive and filled our waters without us asking. Overall, a great experience and would definitely come back to visit!
MoreThis place never disappoint me. The food is amazing, so flavorful and balanced. The services are always fast and the ambience is really cozy
MoreYou Don Ya is one of many Japanese restaurant choices nearby Yonge-Dundas Square. We came to visit when it first opened to try out its donburri for lunch.Hamachi Nabe was presented nicely with cuts of yellowtail, with bonito, soybean and egg on a bowl of rice. The hot bowl cooked through the small fillet pieces a bit too quickly which reduced its sweet fresh flavours. Not the best rendition. For side dishes, we tried the fried brie cheese, and agedashi tofu topped with more bonito. These tasted fine. Checkout was a bit hairy but eventually sorted.
MoreWas really good and I feel like Don (rice bowl with toppingrestaurants are not that common so Im always glad when I find one! This one had a nice and authentic Japanese atmosphere. I had the hamachi don which was served hot and it was very tasty! I recommend!
MoreDonburi restaurant in a stretch along Dundas with lots of Asian restaurants to choose from. Its a narrow that can be easily missed, but with a cute play on words in their name, how could you miss it?We waited about 10 minutes, only to discover that the restaurant was quite long, and had additional seating in the back.I ordered the Yakiniku don and a friend ordered the Aburi Salmon don. I found that the short rib was nice and sweet, and generously portioned. I almost wish there was more rice because of the amount of meat they gave. The salmon on the other hand, had too much mayo, and almost took away from the flavour.Overall, a satisfying meal and reasonably priced if youre looking for a quick bite before or after shopping at the Eaton Centre.
MoreIt was good. It wouldve been better with more stir-fried onions or other vegetables.
MoreI ordered the spicy BBQ beef bowl. The texture of the beef is tender and I think they must have made the sauce with Guchojang—which adds a bit hot flavor in it. My personal suggestion: only ordering the beef bowl with the egg, because other than those two, I didn’t find anything on the menus is worthy enough to purchase or taste.
MoreGreat service, fast preparation, excellent and fresh food. The separate bar is also nice for solo dining. The food is high quality, but it really is quite expensive. I would like to return more often if the food was slightly cheaper.
MoreIve passed by this place a couple of times but I never went in. I finally went with my friend and I was pleasantly surprised. The staff were super friendly and attentive. The food tasted great and was fairly priced. The restaurant was very clean and well maintained. Overall a solid experience and I could definitely see myself coming back to try the other things on the menu
MoreFood:very good, taste nice, fresh, Asian style, but all add-on cost extra money, even miso soup and eggService: good service, will add water frequentlyPrice: high compare to other restaurants in other area, but reasonable at downtown, especially near Eaton. Spring egg is too expensive, $1.99/eggEnvironment: clean, open kitchen
MoreA nice, cosy place to enjoy a good meal. I got their steak don and my husband got the marinated beef don; lovely portions that will guarantee to fill you up. My husband added the hot spring egg to his meal, which made the rice creamy and silky. Their crab salad appetizer; DELICIOUS!!Good customer service, we got seated relatively fast upon entering on a busy night. Thanks!
MoreMy go to place near my place for last couple years and thought it’d be nice to leave a review to encourage the business during pandemic. It’s great that they are reopen for dine in now. I’ve tried almost every menu so far and one thing that I really like about this place is that the foods are fresh. It’s not a cheap fast food place but you can tell that from the quality of the food. Beef menus (karubi and yakiniku don are my personal bestsalways come with good quality beef as it says on the menu. Also I tell my friends to try hamachi nabe for sure if they are fish lovers, which is what I had today. Staffs are very friendly and the restaurant is maintained clean. It always feels great to have a great food place near my place that I would just go any time I’m craving food 😆
MoreWe ordered the Unagi Don and it was very yummy and flavourful. The Unagi was perfectly cooked and the rice underneath was also very tasty with the sauce and furikake, and cooked well. The seaweed salad was somewhat overpowering and perhaps there was too much in the bowl but it lended a slightly fishy taste. Loved loved the accompanying cabbage salad which was crunchy and had a super delicious sauce on top and the miso soup as well. Definitely would have again.
MoreAttentive service, good food and decent value, perfect for a nice evening out. A serendipitous find.
MoreAnother cute little bistro at the AGO area! The menu is simple. We ordered the curry rice set, a side order of katsu and fried shrimp. The Japanese style curry rice here is actually slightly different from the tradition version: more flavorful with more fat. Katsu and ebi-fu-rai are decent. Good service too!
MoreThe staff here are welcoming and very friendly. I recently ordered take out with some friends and we loved everything we ordered. The dishes are quite filling. I had the chicken Katsu (added cheeseand the chicken was so juicy and tender! Highly recommended this spot.
MoreI live quite far, but whenever i get the chance to go eat (takeout or dine in), the food is always so good. My boyfriend always asks me for takeout when I have business in the area. Our favorites are the Karubi Don (the pictureand Ton Toro Don. So good <3
MoreI tried this restaurant for the first time and their food was more amazing than I have expected! Good visual of food makes me more starving and first spoon smiled me immediately. Me and my friend tried bacon steakie fire don, miso salmon don and karaage. Bacon and karaage was my favorite and so juicy. but the miso salmon was also delicious. Highly recommend!
MoreRecently got delivery from You Don Ya. This restaurant never fails to surprise me and satisfy me with their food. Extremely well packaged, very tasty and good portions!! Can’t wait to go back to dine in!Thank you You Don Ya! Amazing food and very fast/reliable service.
MoreYou don ya which is known for their bowls which you can get topped with many different ingredients such as chicken, beef, shrimp and more. I tried the gyudon or the “beef bowl” which is a known comfort food in Japan. You get juicy sliced beef over a bowl of steamed rice. Tasted good but wasn’t a memorable dish for me overall. They do also have sushi that I didn’t get to try this time but maybe next time!
MoreThe Japanese curry was so yummy omg!!! Growing up I used to eat Japanese curry all the time in Honolulu and this took me right back. The service is always quick, friendly, efficient. No fluff which is what I enjoy. Just delicious food and warm smiles.
MoreDecent Japanese restaurant with quality execution on their main don as well as other items such as Hamburg spaghetti. The Don is little pricey given the portion, but the flavours are well executed and balanced, leaving you satisfied and wishing there were just one more bite. The beef was cooked to order which is always a great sign, and tasted amazing because of it.
MoreHigh quality food here! Everything is tasty, I also try the fried sweet potato sticks, which are also delicious. Fried chicken Don’s portion is large, full of meat.
MoreQuite a good little restaurant, came here for a quick and good meal. Servers were nice and efficient. Feel comfortable about their measure needed for covid. Definitely go back to try other dishes.
MoreThis Karubi Don is topped with pieces of boneless beef short ribs and onions and comes with a salad and miso soup! I love the cook on this beef, perfectly medium-rare! The egg is an additional $1, but it goes do well with the don👍Totally worth it!
MoreThey serve quality “don” meal, although this time the pork slices I got had more fat portion compared to last time but still tasted good. A little bit pricey but worth the try. Servers are attentive and atmosphere is good. If they can increase the portion or make it less pricey that would be perfect!
MoreThis is a casual dine in restaurant serving Japanese don and tapas. I came here on the recommendation of my boyfriend and ordered their signature donburi dish: Karubi Don.I had pictured this dish to be an elegantly presented bowl of rice topped with gleaming slices of beef and onions but I just got a poorly arranged version of that. Aside from that, I was excited to dig in. Initially, I noticed how under-seasoned this dish was. If only there was some soy based sauce that could be added to enhance the flavour. The sauce they drizzled on was insufficient. Another criticism I have for this dish is how mushy my rice was. The rice was overcooked and made for an unpleasant eating experience. The meat quality was nice, but the rice totally ruined it for me.
MoreThe Don comes with Free miso soup and salad. Salad was surprisingly good, the dressing is a white sesame dressing. Miso soup is not overly salty like most places.Ordered the Karubi Don, waited less than 10mins for it to be served. Rice is at a good firmness. Can’t comment on the beef too much because the flavour was taken away by the sauce but it’s good still.
MoreReally like this place… im often very picky on rice, but Im 100% satisfied with theirs. Fish was fresh, served with wasabi, benishoga(ginger), miso soup and salad. The price is a little bit on the expensive side, but I will probably come again! Service was good, the waitress added water to our glasses as soon as it was empty. So a definite yes.
MoreThe food was really delicious and the service was kind and quick. It is pricey for what you are getting. The ingredients are really fresh And the taste is great but I would say that this place is lacking something unique to make it stand out.
MoreI came here for dinner with a few coworkers on a Wednesday afternoon. The restaurant was busy but not overcrowded, and we were seated with no wait. The wait staff was curt but polite and pleasant - typical of Japanese dining. I ordered the pork jowl donburi, which was served with coleslaw and a choice of pork bone broth or miso soup. I chose the bone broth. It was a visually pleasing dish, and was very tasty. The dish was certainly not pretentious upscale fine dining, but rather elevated Japanese comfort food. The pork was perfectly seared, and the fat marbling of the jowl cut was used well, rendered nicely and ever so slightly crisped. The glaze had wonderful flavour. The subtle salty-sweetness went perfectly well with the richness of the meat. While not unique, or even new to me, this dish was very delicious and made a great satisfying dinner.
MoreWent during lunch on a weekday, it wasnt too crowded at all. Had the himachi bowl (pic with the eggand the steak bowl, both were delicious but if you were choosing between the two, definitely choose the steak bowl, the meat was cooked perfectly and the rice was soft while the sauce they put on it added a great finish. Giving it 4 starts because they didnt take credit.
MoreOne of my new favourites! Been here twice and everything we ordered was so good! The portion might be a bit small but the quality is definitely a cut above other Donburi places. The beef short-ribs was super flavourful and tender. The spicy pork belly was sooo yummy!
MoreVery good food. My favorite is the half grilled salmon sushi they offer. The other dons they offer are also delicious as well and offer a wide variety from pork, beef, sashimi and chicken. The price is good too with food ranging from 11 to 16 dollars which is great for food around that area. Highly recommend.
MoreHad the pork jowl don and it was tasty. I would recommend this limited time item. The grilled meat was juicy and crispy on the edges. Just the way I like my grilled meat. The rice had some crunchy bits, added texture. Wish they had cabbage salad with sesame dressing, why yogurt?? Standard Japanese portion (slightly higher rice ratio), but just enough food to leave room for dessert. The wait was long during dinner time but the staff are friendly, the Japanese hospitality is definitely there but is diluted when it gets busy. Free refills of hot tea on a cold day, always a plus in my book! Give the place a try and see for yourself.Ps. Friend who had the raw seafood bowl didn’t have irregular bowel movement. But try at your own risk.
MoreAfter seeing all the negative reviews I still decided to give this place a try and I’m so glad I did!First of all the service was good; the waiter informed me that they only take cash & debit when I walked in the restaurant, and once I sat down he asked whether I want hot tea or cold water.I ordered the Karubu Don with hot spring egg (0.99 extra). The beef is so juicy and tender!! Portion was perfect as well (I think they probably increased the portion after seeing the reviews). However I do wish there were more sauce added to the rice. Every dish comes with complimentary soup & salad; I chose the pork bone soup, it was light but good. The salad dressing was yogurt, wasn’t a big fan of that. Overall I enjoyed my meal, but had to give 4 stars as it was quite pricey.
MoreThe food is absolutely fantastic! Simply delicious and fresh. The main course comes with free tasty miso soup, a one of a kind salad and tea. After eating there I always felt light and energetic. I recommend this!
MoreAlmost perfect!! I got the Kalbi Don with cheese with Karaage on the side. The Beef was FABULOUS. RIce was okay but I wish it was a bit more seasoned. The amount of Karaage that you get is well worth the price. I went Friday night and the service was alright. Wait time was long but that was because the restaurant was popular.
MoreThis place is still rather new, and at peak times there is usually a small wait for seats. The decor is very nice and modern, typical of most new asian eateries these days. The food here is very good for its PRICE. I think a thing that I had to keep in mind was that the presentation of the food was great, and they look very similar to what way more expensive restaurants have but for a lot cheaper, and that is a tradeoff.I personally thought the Ake-Oshizushi was a GREAT DEAL, for under 12$ you get 6-8 blowtorched pressed salmon squares. they use at least 50% more rice under the fish (so the squares are very largebut I guess you cant complain about getting lots of food. They still taste great, and while you cant compare it to say, the 36$ ones at Miku, they are way worth it at the price point IMO.That app was so large that I couldnt even finish my main, which was the number 1 bowl, a Karubi Don. I always get the Onsen egg with these, and it was decent. The photo definitely makes the cuts of beef look much softer, and while the taste was good, you can definitely tell that the cuts are of average quality (chewy). But for 14$, I think it meets my expectations.Service was fast and efficient. Will come back again for more blowtorched squares I think.
