Hounds Gate, Nottingham NG1 7AA, Nottingham
Ancient 15th-century pub, above Anglo-Saxon caves, with heavy rock nights and serving real ales.
Not a nice pub whatsoever, needs new ownership, doesnβt feel at all like the kind of place you can stop by and have a nice drink
Olde worldie character pub with no frills with rock music. Some nights different live bands. Beer good but for example if having a jd and coke , coke is flat from the hand pump. Pay extra and get a bottle of the frizzy stuff.
Great selection of ales. Punk rock pub. Good music
Great place for a coffee,
this place smells awful, the people are absolutely vile to be around and the staff are just downright rude. Downstairs is full of gothic types that make you feel like dirt for even attending their dark ritual hall and then upstairs (lord the disgraceful upstairstheres half naked woman dancing in the most debaucherous fashion to the most god awful music ie Slitnots, Rage against the machine, Corn and Papi roach. this place IS NOT inclusive
I went into this pub for my birthday and the atmosphere was very tense. it felt as if the people in there didnt like new people and people even went as far as to take pictures of me mockingly because of how i see it fit to present myself, i was confronted by someone who claimed to be the owners son and he was rude and combative and asked me to leave for no particular reason
Great place!! To give them six stars I only need early Carcass and Napalm Death added to their jukebox πππ»
O ayeGreat place to go for drink with the rock and motor bikers. Great character place.
So good to see a proper rock pub again. Not many left. I will be back
Probably the best rock pub I know, excellent selection of music, excellent beer selection, a must visit place for metalheads and bikers. Although they are welcoming to all comers be advised that unless you are into the rock/metal ethos you may feel a little out of place
Lovely place. Popped in with he missus for a quick beer after visiting Nottingham. One of the few bars Ive been in with rock/metal owners and the music to match.Seating outdoor in the sun outdoor in he shade or indoors too. Service was fast the drinks ice cold. Didnt order food and only looked at the burger menu but the prices were competitive and the choice was good. All types of people were in this bar and I would recommend it to anyone.
Just yessss! Stopped off a quick drink. Nice relaxed atmosphere and good pint. Cant ask for more
Very friendly staff and original atmosphere.. 1000% you need drink two three pints here
Fantastic pub great atmosphere will be visiting again xx
So glad we found this dog friendly pub on the way to Travelodge
The chicken burger was really delicious and after our meal we were allowed to take a look in the caves under guidance from one of the lovely staff members who was happy to tell us some information about the history of this place. Thank you so much for this wonderful experience
Four of us stopped by this place the other day due to the historical stories and to have some lunch. The chicken burgers were delicious. We followed on from lunch by asking if we could go into the caves underneath the pub and were led down by a lovely chap with a snazzy beard who was funny and informative at the same time. Thanks for the good memories, and experiences! Will definitely come again in the near future.
We stopped by this pub in Nottingham for a lunch break. They do absolutely amazing chicken burgers and the drinks were really nice too. The atmosphere was lovely and the staff was really friendly. We also got to see a bit of the caves that are lying underneath the pub and got guided by a really friendly chap with a cool beard! Thank you for the amazing experience!
Nice pub, but theyd shut the kitchen because they were too busy
Great rock pub. Good selection of beer, friendly staff and just a nice atmosphere. I havent eaten here but the menu looks good.
First time here last week and had to come backDont get me wrong this wont be everyones cup of tea but for me its spot onGreat range of ales, great atmosphere, quiet back room (snugto just chillPrices are very reasonable tooI may have just found my new Saturday evening haunt9 month later update......What a differenceWe went yesterday for food.Ordered drinks, sat down to read the menu, bar staff came in quite rudely asked " where did you get that menu?" We told her "at the bar" and was informed very rudely and abruptly " well you shouldnt have, were not doing food today"Fair comment but no need for such an attitude.....Ive changed my mind about here now, all was great until staff with attitude spoilt a lovely place
Really nice, with a large selection of ales, ciders, and beers. Really nice nooks to find a corner in for talking and relaxing.
Great pub for Rock and Metal, good selection of beers and ciders, friendly staff and surprisingly good food. Best mixed grill Ive had with the biggest piece of steak, cooked medium rare which is unusual. Only complaint was the amount of chips, there were loads on my plate and in the separate portion we got for my wife, far too many between us. Love The Sal!
Had a meal there on Sunday, it was a good meal, alternative pub,.have to go in one weekend have Bands playing there. Quiet nice experience, cool staff
Just happened upon this old historical pub that happens to have a metal music venue upstairs. Had a great meal and so a fantastic metal show while here. One worker also offered to let me see the caves below, though I didnt have the time. Stop in this place!
I believe the second oldest pub but also a fantastic rock bar with great selection of beer and a pub menu for food
Went upstairs for the first time on a Saturday night. Β£3 entry I think it was. The atmosphere was epic, great music and a stage that had a couple of dancers. Had a great time
Wonderful staff, lovely relaxing atmosphere. I enjoyed it. I was there celebrating a friends birthday.
Was a good. night with my friend first time ive been since it was run into the ground ,im happy to say its back has beer ,,before was cans expensive and rubbish ,great friendly sexy barstaff and full of attractive people having fun without judgement ,great pub so glad it survived and has thrived infact ,well done new landlord
Great old pub, full of history.Friendly staff, food very good. Definitely worth a visit if your new to Nottingham.
An amazing historic pub that plays heavy metal and is full of interestingly tattooed characters. And the real ale is good, too π
Fantastic venue π great beers ,great music live bands upstairs. Great tunes on jukebox plenty of Rock ...
We had to reschedule our board games meet up, proved a food night.Staff always welcoming and friendly. Always polite and know rangePub is clean, open spaced. Good access for disabled as easy to move. Patrons always relaxed and great atmosphere.Great space.
Been drinking here years, perfect atmosphere, lovely staff. Fave pub by far!
Great pub with a great vibe. Excellent choice of hand pulled beers. Ill be coming back for the cave tour. ππ€
Awesome pub, great staff and a safe and pleasant atmosphere. Food is amazing and reasonably priced, especially considering portion sizes.Excellent gigs, and general shenanigans. Favourite pub in Notts m/
Great staff, good choice of drink and some amazing bands play here
The Sal is a Nottingham institution. Its always been a pub for bikers and rock music fans. Possibly the oldest pub in the city. A place for those who follow a different path. A friendly and inclusive clientele. Highly recommend.
Loved the place, bikers and alternative young people, great loud rock music but I cant go back as my wife didnt like it and food not very good. Wish I was young enough to frequent this place.
If youre visiting Nottingham Castle, or on this side of Nottingham, you should give this pub a try. Its got real character and is always popular and busy.Be prepared to queue for drinks however, as the staff always seem to struggle to get on top of those waiting to be served - maybe they need more staff, as this would lead to happy punters!!
Great pub dog friendly last visit my two Labbies was treated to a homemade meatball each always has a good range of ales on offer.
Warm and friendly, from the name I wasnt expecting rock music from such an old building. It was very nice and enjoyable
I come here a lot with my friends. The staff are lovely - You can tell theyre like family. The drink prices are reasonable and Ive always felt welcomed! There are also quite a few events that go on there but I always seem to miss them but it is the place to go! Especially if you enjoy the rock and metal scene!
Great historic pub, one of three with a claim to be the oldest in Nottingham. Good beer options. Caves sound interesting, but I didnt have enough time to explore, one for a future visit.
Best rock pub in the country; excellent range at decent prices and the staff are fantastic. Ive literally changed my work schedule so I can land in Nottingham more often based purely on my experience here. Killer soundtrack.
A real wow pub with its history & cavenous rooms..top food too & real ale choices
Met up with my brother Jethro durrant for lunchBurger was great really nice friendly people even got a private tour of the cavesJethro explaining in detail the history of the caves
Passed this old pub with my friend. We had heard this was the oldest pub in Notts. We went in and ordered a drink. The landlord Jason was in the pub and started chatting with us. He was a font of knowledge in relation to the history of Nottingham and the Salutation. We listened to the storys and facts he was conveying to us. We couldnt believe that Jason was taking so much of his own time to tell us the history of Nottingham and the Salutation. Jason told us about the pub and the different nights they hold in relation to live music. As we were interested with the history Jason off his own back took us down to look at the caves beneath the pub and gave us a history lesson on the way. We are so grateful to the time you took to show us some history.I thoroughly recommend the Salutation to visit on any trip around Nottingham. This place is full if history and we enjoyed our time.
This has to be my favourite pub in Nottingham. Staff were brilliant, beer was fantastic, food was incredible and affordable too. Cant recommend this place enough. If you are close by go have a beer and a chat. It is a rock pub but the volume was perfectly acceptable to talk over.
This is a fantastic pub. Something for most tastes. The new food menu has just launched, the portions are fantastic, the variety of dishes again has something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable. The Landlord has just refurbished one of the snugs with new tables, carpet and curtains (he says new chairs are on the way too)This is truly a 5* pub
