Ye Olde George Inn - Pub in George, South Africa
Ye Olde George Inn in George
Description
After eyeing up the options in Otford, we decided to look a bit further afield for a Sunday roast, and found the many pubs in Shoreham. After a bit of review hopping and price eyeing up, we opted for Ye Olde George. That, it turns out, was a fantastic idea. The service in the pub was great, they had a few decent ales on draught along with the usual beers, and the Sunday roasts were fantastic. The portions were great, and the meat lovely, with nice veg a perfect Yorkshire. The price was a bargain, and the pub is clearly very dog friendly too. Definitely recommended.
MoreWhat a cracking traditional village pub! Good lunchtime menu, excellent choice of ales and superb ambience. Cant wait to revisit.
MoreLong time since we had been to the George, very happy to say its back to its cosy welcoming self, friendly attentive staff, excellent food and warming fires on, well be back soon.
MoreNice warm and cosy, foods great so is local beer
Food well below par, and they didn’t have half the (smallmenu available. Beers were good though.
MoreGreat pub, really friendly blokes. Quientasential British built for people much smaller than we are now. Do recommend
MoreWent in today on our way to the train station, and Sasha and the rest of the team behind the bar were more than accommodating in helping us. We were in a hurry so they suggested dishes that the kitchen could bring out quickly, and were attentive in bringing us our meals and drinks, and treats for our dog! The food was great and we left happy - you cant beat good customer service. Well done to the whole team in the kitchen and bar, and see you again soon!
MoreVery warm and relaxing pub. We go for open mics, well run and lots of fun. Congenial clientele. One of our favorites.
MoreReserved a table for 3 for a Sunday roast, we got the table right near the lovely fire which was burning away when we arrived we were approached by the young friendly waiter who took our orders for the roast lunches which arrived cooked and presented to perfection after 15 mins delicious every part of the roast was just right and no over cooked veg! Along with the really nice and indulgent pudding chocolate fondant with ice-cream the whole meal washed down with a well kept pint of doombar ale delightful. Would highly recommend coming even for a drink nice and cosy with friendly welcoming staff Cheers 😀
MoreGreat pub for Sunday lunch with friends. Really good food, descent portions and reasonable price. Dogs welcome and he even got a sausage. Will definitely be back.
MorePleasent traditional pub with good food and service.
If you are a dog lover or dog walkers (not mutually exclusive of coursethis is the place for u and your furry friends. Really amazing ingredients so lovely food too.
MoreEverything was good , food , drinks and best of all a happy person behind the bar !
MoreUnfriendly manager, no extra staff for bank holiday busy period, long wait for a drink, walked out, Shame on you, this pub was a good local pub.
MoreGreat little pub to have a drink and bite to eat halfway round a dog walk, will be returning soon 👌
MoreOnly here for about 20 mins but was nice. It was In a nice village on the a walking route which was why is was there. Had a friendly bartender and good range of drinks.
MoreWent on Saturday night after being at the mount vineyard down the road. The pub was packed with music playing. On our way in the landlord who was sat outside stopped us and said they weren’t serving drinks anymore. This clearly wasn’t true as we could see the barman serving drinks. I said that it was only 10pm and he replied rudely ‘it’s been a long day, we aren’t in London you know’ (huge judgement being made about where we are from. I live in Sevenoaks). So anyway we said fine we will go to the Kings arms down the road and he told us that would be shut too. We went to the kings arms and it was open... as you’d expect a pub to be at 10pm on a Saturday night. We stayed just over an hour and had to walk back past the George inn to get the train. Surprise surprise the party there was still going strong and I’d imagine the drinks in ppls hands weren’t the same ones they’d had over an hour before.I’d heard stories about pubs in shoreham being rude and dismissive to non-locals but had never experienced it till last night. I go to shoreham regularly with my dog as it’s only ten minutes from where I live. I have eating at this pub multiple times. After how they acted last night I will not step foot in there again.
MoreThe life and soul of the village on Saturday night. Delicious pint of Musket - just as well, as that was the only bitter on offer..
MoreLovely little pub with a good a good menu size and well priced. The perfect pub for walkers and the like.
MoreWe had a lovely lunch here - I can especially recommend the ploughmans spread. The staff were also incredibly kind and helpful. A lovely pub full of history and character.
MoreTasty food and good portions at decent prices. We have been to this pub a few times and make sure we pay a visit whenever we are in the area to have a refreshing pint and something to eat. It has been really enjoyable each time with friendly service. Look forward to the next visit.
MoreFood was good pub grub - considering how busy it was service was quick
Dog friendly is fine but to the point where humans come second. A pub full of dogs, some quite large and intimidating (and a bit smellyfood was great but put off a bit by dogs yapping at each other with owners and proprietors alike seemingly oblivious. Whilst clearly not allowed in the kitchen some did jump up at the bar and table so hygiene must be an issue. Like I say, food was great, and good beer too. If big loud dogs dont bother you then go for it.
MoreGreat little 16th century pub. Fantastic roasts and a great selection of cask beers.
MoreGood pub for walkers dog and muddy boots are no a problem. Very old building with low ceilings and serve nice food too.
MoreWent to visit my Fathers resting place in the Churchyard opposite, popped in for a beer, a quirky little pub, real fire crackling away, good beer and a no nonsense menu. Very enjoyable. Thank you.
MoreDisappointing. Despite having lots of empty tables (with reserved noticesinsisted on a 20m wait before we could even order food (at 13.30 on a Saturday). The barstaff were free enough to be outside on a cigarette break though.
MoreJust been to that pub in passing and was ignored when me and my partner walked in, and when we asked for information about a place in Shoreham, we were rudely spoken to by a barmen so we decided to leave and try the Kings Arms just down the Rd who were more than helpful and friendly as were the locals
MoreVery nice traditional pub. Excellent food and good beer. Very nice people too.
Rude landlord. Will not be going back after 4 unpleasant visits to this pub. Myself and 2 friends often walk the country walks around Shoreham and after we would like a drink and something to eat each time we have had a drink at this pub but have always been told that there is no food. On Thursday 19th after a walk we heard that there were Morris dancers at the pub so decided to stop by to have drink and something to eat but again was told there was no food, so we left only later that same evening another friend of ours told us it was a good night with some nice food???. We will not be going back to this pub, so we will be trying the pub around the corner The Kings Arms hopefully our experience here will be more friendly and welcoming.
MoreWasnt sure if food orders were taken at table or bar, so after 10mins, I went to the bar and met with tutting from the barman. Starters and mains served at same time. Went to tell them (even though they knew coz they served it!and was asked "what do you want me to do about it?I said either bring us fresh mains when starter is finished or give us a refund and well go elsewhere. After a lot of faffing and finger pointing ("I brought you what you ordered!" and "Thats what was on the ticket!"they agreed to bring fresh mains later. Toilets ropey, fire exit blocked and wires trailing all over floor. Much better places in Shoreham so no need to ever go back.
MoreLoved it, great choice of real ales, good food menu and delicious meals. The staff are brilliant and make your visit an occasion. Get down there and see if Im wrong .. no chance.
MoreGreat local country pub, well worth a visit, plus they have a Juke box.
Good range of beers and very cosy country pub.Landlord happily accommodated a large group without notice and food arrived swiftly without any fuss. He even made up a fire for us in the back room. Excellent hospitality.
MoreGreat food. Ive had the Sunday roast and its excellent. All you could wish for. Sadly the beer could be more exciting. Come on try a stronger ABV beer to complement the wonderful good. Jaipur or green devil American pale ale would hit the spot.
MoreGreat food, friendly bar staff and decent turn out for the Friday night open mic session
MoreCharming traditional pub with nice food and drinks. Slightly on the expensive side though...
MoreVery nice country pub. Friendly staff although we did not eat the food looked well presented and appetising. There is a nice array of beers on offer also.
MoreGreat traditionally English country pub great food and real ale nothing pretentious.
MoreJust a good, straightforward village pub. They keep their beer well, they do decent pub food and have some outside seating. Dog friendly and relaxed.
MoreMay bank holiday, kitchen closed at 3pm and I got a half pint of my favourite cider as they run out.
MoreDog friendly, great food, shame about the local loudmouth that turned up. My children nor I, want to hear you swearing about the football.
MoreA great little village pub which serves food and hot drinks also. Very friendly staff and always had room.
MoreExcellent food.lovely to be home made and staff very friendly and helpful.lovely setting aswell and will definitely come agai.xxxx
MoreI had the most delicious starter, great main course and finally a cake that I had no room to enjoy. The quality of food was excellent and it was amazing value. I almost do not want to write about the great value our meal was in case you misinterpret this as a recommendation based on price. The lunch was delicious. The staff were patient and helpful. We were, to be quite honest, a mixed and perhaps disruptive group meeting for a Christmas lunch and the staff were at all times courteous.
MoreWe had a table booked for 2.30 for 16 and we had to sit there till 3.05 just waiting for our food order to be taken only to find out they had ran out of most of the food we wanted and it turns out that was due to the fact they served walk ins first yet it was very obvious we were spending more money than the rest of pub put together on food and drinks this was a shame as its a lovely little pub and friendly staff just need to look at how they run the place
MoreHaving visited Ye Olde George Inn reasonably frequently in the past for their excellent homemade pie and a pint on Wednesday, I decided to take some friends for a snack on Sunday lunchtime. For the hour we were there, the following events too place:1. Ordered drinks and perused the food menu.2. Went to the bar to order food, but told to come back in 10 minutes.3. After 10 minutes returned to the bar to ordered food. Told to return in 15 minutes.4. After 15 minutes returned to the bar to order food. Told to sit down and that someone would take our order when they could.5. After 10 minutes checked with a waitress that they were still going come out to take our order, which she confirmed.6. After 10 minutes finished drinks.7. Over heard waitress telling another customer that they had just stopped doing bar food, and were only doing roasts. For the hour we had been outside, plates of sandwiches had been coming out.8. Asked the waitress why she hadnt told us earlier about the long wait for food and that they had stopped doing bar snacks. She shrugged her shoulders in a dismissive fashion.9. Went home without lunch.I appreciate they were moderately busy, but it was 1530 so not at the peak lunchtime rush. So, why 1*? Because they failed to manage our expectations and be honest with us. If the staff had said "were sorry but its a 1 hour wait and well only be doing roasts by then", we would have been completely happy and tried another pub. As it was, they took our money for drinks knowing full well we wanted to order food and would be waiting a long time. They had multiple opportunities to tell us about the long wait, but chose not keep us informed. Unfortunately in my book, even the best food can be ruined by poor customer service. Ye Olde George Inn needs to value its customers better, particularly locals who visit regularly. Ill be going to one of the other excellent pubs in Shoreham next time.
MoreVisited on bank holiday Monday (1st one in Maywhich also happened to be the day of the duck race which the village holds annually. We were a group of 4 looking to get some lunch but unfortunately the kitchen was overwhelmed and the bar stopped taking food orders. It was all a bit of a shambles and we werent even offered drinks when we asked about ordering food. The twenty minute wait turned into 45 minutes and we then gave up and went to the Kings Arms which seemed to be just as busy but coping better with the numbers.Wouldnt visit again on a busy bank holiday, but wouldnt mind trying the food as it looked great.
MoreVisited at lunchtime on a Sunday. It was raining outside, so quite busy inside, with a mix of local families and hikers - its close to the Darent Valley Path. Our party of four had Sunday roasts, which came quickly and went down even faster. Friendly staff, both behind the bar and waiting. Three ales on tap. Mind the low ceiling!
MoreFriendly and cosy, real country pub. Very welcoming. Great selection of beers, changes weekly. Bit more selection on the main menu would be good but there was also specials board. Large portion sizes. Very tasty.
