Long-running self-serve joint serving fried fish & chicken, clam strips, lobster rolls & more.
I recently moved back to the area and I hadnt been to Ye Olde English Fish & Chips for more than 10 years. I was pleased to find the quality of the fish and chips here has remained as good as it always was.
Always the best and a great part of RI history! The fishcakes are always perfect.
Delicious fish & chipsFriendly staff excellent food and a clean dining area
This place needs to change there cooking oil often and it would be nice to have gotten served fresh fries
Love the fish cakes. My first trip back in 3 years , was not disappointed.
The fish and fries and cole slaw ( cost extraare very tasty. They also offer chicken.
Food was very good service is good. Nice clean place.Fish and chips. Shrimp, scallops, chicken, drinks, chowder.
I stopped by Ye olde English fish and chips, yesterday and had a fish sandwich with tartar and fries with ketchup and malt vinegar.. yummy! I sure do miss New Englands traditional foods.
Worlds Best Fish & Chips are at Ye Olde English Fish & Chips in Woonsocket, Rhode Island! Going back to the 1960s when I was a kid I been eating the Fish & Chips from Ye Olde English Fish & Chips!
Ive had chicken here before but tried fish and chips for the first time. The fish portion was small and the coating was on the greasy side which made it hard to separate from the fish. The fries were soggy and mostly inedible. Disappointed.. wont get this again.
Outstanding! The real deal! Pieces of fish, as long as my forearm, and as wide and thick as my hand. The batter is perfect, and very tasty. Totally traditional and authentic all the way around. They’ve been in business for 97 years, that alone should speak for itself. If you pass this place up, you’re missing out.If you find this review helpful, give it a thumbs up!
Been going here for fifty years when we go to RI, still the best fish and chips Ive ever had!!
I forgot how good they are, I wont let as much time pass between visits. Always great fish and chips or try the white chowder and clam cakes. Your gonna love it all too.
Had a great meal and great service. A++ highly recommended for fish and chips, the full belly clams and the fries. Go have a great seafood meal! They even compped us an extra piece of fish for an unexpected delay. ❤️
Clam cakes and chowder were some of the best Ive ever had! Highly recommend
Fish is too greasy. Ive recently went fish was Betty. But menu prices on line is 3 years old the prices are quite higher now. Service is great though
Deliciousness! We got the Captains plate and White Clam chowder. Everything was great except the chips were cold ( minus one starwe split the meal and was perfect amount for 2 of us.
Worst fish and chips. It didnt look good from the start. The oil they fried on looked like dark coffee. Everything was oily, soggy and bland. Nothing was cristy or tasty and i was told it would be. Disappointed.
Went for 2 seafood plater they were super grease chips doble grease and no flavor at all
We were visiting from Florida and wanted a touch of home. Went and were served reheated fish and fries. Wont be goi g back any time in the future.
Food was hot and fresh! French fries are amazing! Fast service and wonderful staff.
Have been eating here since the mid sixties. The food is great and the menu assortment is fantastic. A very enjoyable experience.
Worst fish and chip I ever had. The fish was like mush and oily. The fries were soggy. Do your self a favor go some place else.
Was ok, remember the fish and chips being better awhile back...the batter was greasy but fish inside was pleasant tasting...overall was just a ok experience, there is better fish and chip places out there!!!
Amazing place. Great fish, delicious whole belly clams, fantastic white seafood chowder. Wonderful staff and incredible atmosphere. Definitely a must try if you love seafood.
It wasnt as good as I thought it would be. I think they cook fish and chips ahead of orders. Therefore food is allowed to sit too long. It becomes greasy and the taste is RI ed.
I had their fish n chips and clam chowder. The fish was good but they needed to change the cooking oil. Batter was dark and had a slight burned taste. Clam chowder was nice. Service was bad. They lack that personal attention for good service. Maybe they should hire more staff for dine in as well. I would not recommend it just because of service.
First and last time coming here . First was happy fish wasn’t that great . they didn’t offer or just add tarter or vinegar to order that made my meal not great at all can’t have this meal without those . Higson in Fall River is the best hands downs will not be disappointed.
The fish and chips were great. They used to give tartar sauce and a small coleslaw with each meal but this time, they didnt.
Being a life long resident of Woonsocket, Ive been going to this establishment since I was a child. Now that Im a senior citizen on a fixed income, I only sprluge once on a Friday during Lent. They need to update their online menu prices to reflect what they really are charging now!!! Although a decent serving size for a small portion fish and chips, nothing had any taste at all!!! With the price I paid today, I could have gone to a local restaurant near my home for less money and better food. Thought I was getting their online listed price... 🤔😕😝. P.s, instead of hiring more staff with the money they charge, they take the phone off the hook and you only get a fast busy signal when you try to call in an order. I spent about 45 minutes trying to get thru tonight for a take out with no answer. If I had been able to place an order over the phone, with the amount they wanted, I would have hung up and gone elsewhere!!! Never again...
Lets start with, I was really hoping this place was good. Ive heard nothing but good. Start off with the positives, employees friendly, portions good, prices are normal, cole slaw not all full of mayo. Now comes the negative, worst fish and chips I have ever had. Tasteless, super greasy, fries cold and greasy. I stripped my fish of its greasy batter and only ate it as I was hungry. I threw away the fries. I waited to eat here for quite awhile and was finally in the area and was so disappointed. I do not think I will be back unless someone else is paying and I will try something else. It has been in business for 100 yrs and people say good things so they must be doing something right just not this time.
Newer resident to Woonsocket and I was very disappointed. In addition to slow service (not a surprise given the three high school girls behind the counter were more focused on signing Encanto songs then making and serving customers), the food was utterly disappointing. Was I eating fish? I dont know as it tasted identical to the chips, likely because of "ye olde" oil used to cook. I left half my food uneaten and two hours later Im still nauseous.Wont be going back anytime soon. Sad to say given it presents as an institution of downtown Woonsocket, but there are much better options in town and surrounding areas.
This is a fine example of a good solid British Northern "Chippy" if ever you visit Yorkshire, England...you will get fishcakes and fish & chips exactly like this. I think any bad reviews here are from people raised on frozen french fries and not very good batter. My wife is from Sheffield and I lived there for a couple of years. She and I can both attest that Ye Olde is standard for Sheffield batter and the fries which in America I dont think Ive ever had them exactly like this. England is the type of place where from town to town accents, words for things and cooking styles vary. Order a fishcake in London and you will get what is called a "rissole" in the northern city of Sheffield. Both made differently and both citys residents may turn their nose up at each others recipes. Ive been to Ye Olde numerous times and each time has been equally excellent. We live near New Bedford, MA and it takes at least an hour to Woonsocket so while there we enjoy fish & chips and stock up on par-boiled fishcakes. We freeze them and enjoy them another time with homemade fries. BTW weve just come home from a new-ish posh New Bedford eatery...absolutely reeking with presentation right out of a cooking show...right on the water... and had fish & chips. Eating that inspired me to get online and rave about Ye Olde...nothing I know of in the USA beats it. All the best places I ever had good f&c around NB are either closed or lost their luster long ago....the ordinary New England frozen fries and un-inspired batter. I just spent $49 at a place 2 miles from my house and Im not going back. Please try Ye Olde...if you somehow dont like it well, you dont like Yorkshire style. And Ye Olde, if you are reading this...thanks for serving a generous portion of South Yorkshire. As long as you DONT CHANGE, well be back again and again. Well be the ones beaming at the table.
This place has been around so long that when my grandma would come here as a little girl, it had already been around forever. At some point they are going to have to designate it as a Historical Heritage site. If you are a big Fish and Chips fan youve gotta give it a try. Its an old school frylator based operation. its not fine dining, and it doesnt claim to be. Fries are thick and hearty, servings are plentiful. It is a Rhode Island staple.
Last Saturday husband and I finally decided to give a try to a 99 years restaurant with a good reviews on Google. What could go wrong??? What a disappointment!!!! The food was nothing but terrible in all ways!!! Presentation, tasty etc. Never going back! But we kind worry now, because we always use Google to find a good place to eat. We hope the reviews will be more trustworthy.
This is the 2nd time they messed up my order and it cost me twice as much. Instead of a combination plate, I got 2 separate plates. Instead of 1 order of 2 pieces of fish, I got 3. Instead of child size chicken and chips, I got child size chicken and chips. And didnt get my clam cakes. If I could drive I would have returned it. The woman on the phone repeated my order correctly.
My first time at Olde English Fish 🐟. I ordered Fishing man see food platter paid over $26.00 for it.I wasnt impressed with food or customer service 😕.Received 5 shrimp 🍤 the size is good 👍 ,and 5 Scallops, the fish 🐟 was really small pice with twice the size of Bara and a lot of French fries 🍟 but everything was really soggy and moshed .I think thats my first and last.
Twice I order from here theres nothing left! Last Saturday, in person, at 6:30, they were out of chowder! But we got clam cakes. They were good! Hence the 2 stars! Tonight, Friday, (one week laterat 6:30, we were told they stop selling clam cakes at 3pm???? ...didnt bother to ask about the chowder! Going to Chelos. ✌️✌️✌️
This was our go-to place for fish and chips throughout my childhood, and I was so excited to be able to visit it again after more than a decade. Unfortunately I was incredibly disappointed. While the place looked the same as it had when I was a child, the food was awful! I had the fish and chips with a side of clam cakes. The batter on the fish was incredibly tough instead of crispy, and I couldnt break bits off without using my hands to tear it. My fork was absolutely no use. The fries are no longer sweet. Instead, they are very bland and only taste like cooking oil. The clam cakes were saturated with oil and I couldnt find a single clam in the one I ate. Because everything was so greasy, I was extremely nauseous the rest of the day, which ruined my last day to visit my family before returning to Arizona. I am heartbroken by how another staple from my childhood has gone down the drain.
This place has the best fish Ive ever had (and I am not a seafood person). Ive been here 3 times this year and they never disappoint. Their crab cakes are perfect.
One of our favorite places in town! Authentic fish & chips dinner with HUGE portions of fish. The seafood chowder is unbelievably fresh and delicious with monster chunks of various types of seafood in each bite. Quiet, relaxing vibe. Never disappointed here!
In my opinion, prices are a little out of whack!!Fish and chip and fish only came to $24.If you check the menu on line its $11.40 for fish and chip and $8.55 for fish totaling $19.95. hmmmAlthough fish was very tasty (as usual, I sincerely doubt I personally wont be back. Most folks on SS cannot enjoy the seafood due to pricing. Guess we will have to remain eating gaggers.
Absolutely best place around for seafood. Especially the fish and chips, and clam cakes/strips. Theres a reason people from across the country, and across the world to eat here.
Best seafood platter for the price around. Matter of fact, best seafood portion.sizes for the price around!I got the seafood platter with Huge scallops and shrimp, nice piece of fish, and big beefy fries. The front of the house were super friendly. Our tables were clean and they wiped between customers. We will be back for sure!
This is by far the best fish n chips!! We drove 2 hours for this. I cant have fish n chips anywhere else!!
First time having real New England fish and chips. Everything was a little on the greasy side, but being from the south that’s wasn’t a problem for me. The fish was very tender and the breading was delicious. The clam cakes were very good and the white clam chowder was awesome. I would eat there again
This place has great food all the time! Northern Rhode Island Best Kept hidden jewels. I will go there again and again and my dad will have me take him again and again.. since I brought him there it is now his favorite place❤
Delicious whole belly clams and fries extra crispy! Great service, casual atmosphere. Definitely recommend
A local legend in Woonsocket, open for nearly a century as of 2018. Offers English style fish and chips as well as Rhode Island staples like clam cakes, both pictured below. This is a happy marriage of English pub food and traditional Rhode Island meals. Some complain of old oil or grease, my meal was oily, but the taste was good. Oil taste was fine. They have a large amount of customers each day which could account for oil variation. The chips are thick, springy and slightly limp, cooked to a brown finish. This is actually a good match for the fish where you wouldnt want the crunch to overpower the fish batter. It is seafood so prices are seasonal. I was able to get the signature Fish & Chips and three clam cakes for $14.50 in May 2018. Portion sizes are large so bring an appetite. Overall it is a good amount of seafood for the price. Hopefully this doesnt change. The restaurant appears to be committed to serving the people of Woonsocket, which is a good sign.If you are in the Blackstone Valley area and want a good traditional meal this place is a must visit. Rhode Island overall is a great eating state from my perspective as someone from Philadelphia.
Been eating here all my life. There is no better fish and chips anywhere. The white chowder is mind-numbingly fabulous. Can I give 12 stars?
