Food writer J. Kenji López-Alt is behind this dynamic beer hall with German & New American fare.
Great casual scene to chill after work and eat.Smashburger may not stand out because but its pretty darn good- two thin patties that you can customize with lettuce, spread, etc.Chicken pesto on a sliced bun is pretty good along with the potatoes as your side. They have an obscene number of beer on tap.
Great outdoor seating. Everything is delicious. Not a ton of vegetarian options, but enough to have a great meal here if you are vegetarian (chopped salad is huge and tasty).
I really like coming to Wursthall. But my most recent experience on the evening of 8/16 left me very disappointed. The service was unfriendly from the start. My wife and I were greeted with a blank stare when entering and after the hostess walked us over to our seat, she instructed to use the the QR code when ready order and directed us to a bucket of water where we can serve our own water near the bar, which has turned into a giant busing station where costumers apparently cannot sit anymore. The entire atmosphere and ambiance seemed like they were still operating mid-pandemic.The food arrived within 4 minutes of ordering our meal, which immediately made me suspicious. Sure enough, the fried Korean chicken sandwich that I routinely order was not good. The batter was chewy and the chicken was cold and dry. It was definitely not made fresh to order. The potatoes in the potato salad were crunchy and not as appetizing as I remember it from past experience. What was really frustrating is the Toast tab requires you to tip and close out each order prior to placing it. This is a bad practice in my opinion because as a customer the gratuity should be commensurate to the quality of the food and service at the end of your dining experience. If the expectation is to tip 18-20% for each order placed, and ask your costumers to order their own food and serve their own water, then the quality and consistency of the food and service at Wursthall needs to greatly improve.Everything considered, I think the staff has become too complacent and I will not be returning again anytime soon. Perhaps things will improve over time.
this place was terrible. forced QR codes, forced tipping upfront, rude staff as a result of that upfront tipping, they get mad when you give them cash, and ridiculous prices, $12 for a hot dog and nearly $20 for a sandwich. wifi doesnt even work.
Food is not great and overpriced. How decent hot dog can cost 16$? Very not comfortable to order. Every time you need to order using via web, pay tips every time you add any food!!!! Place has no anterior design and no spirit of beer garden. Not recommend at all.
Its a beer hall with great food and beverages. Can recommend the Korean Chicken Sandwich and Burger. If you are into bratwurst, the sausages are good, though a little difficult to eat gracefully. I wondered if it was going to be enough food for a meal, but with the triple cooked potatoes or sides, the entrees are enough. Would go back
Very good food, I ordered the chicken sandwich and i was very satisfied. My mother ordered the grilled chicken salad and it was a very well sized and filling dish. Service was great and the ordering system is entirely on your phone. Would return again 😀
Love this place! Food is always great and I love the efficiency of the service and the consistency of the food quality. I generally am eager to get some kind of Wurst given the variety they offer, but the Korean Spicy Chicken sandwich is something I like to indulge in every now and then as its so good. I do miss the wider selection beers they had pre-pandemic and the variety of mustards they used to have on the table, but you can always ask for the mustards. It also has a great vibe although leans towards techie hipster for sure.
Great place for groups or a date (as we sat between two couples 🙂). Beer selection somewhat limited but enough to pair with the fine Euro/German food options. On the cusp of a boujie beer hall, the place runs almost completely contactless, service and food delivered quickly, and noise level average. If you do imbibe beyond a Sunday afternoon smooth buzz, be warned that finding your way to and from the loo may be challenging despite the instructions to follow the white rabbit. They are downstairs to the left, all the way back. 🐇🐇
The menu is really interesting and the food is good. We hadnt been in a long time, and there used to be more German beer on tap, so seeing more domestic was a bummer. We ate outside and the service wasnt great, but its still a cool spot
Been here twice, enjoyed it both times. Food is always great, too bad Im not a fan of beer. Always enjoy the porchetta sausage, and tried the deviled eggs recently and they were great.Got schnitzel for the first time my last visit and felt like it was a great deal! Just wish there was a little more sauce or something, although the meat was tender and moist and the batter was great. Probably not authentic that way though. The salad that came with it was great too.
Good location. Food was great, skip the chicken bites they had no flavor. But the burger and pesto chicken sausage were wonderful. Also had the deviled eggs and the quesadilla.
I think it was good but didnt live up to the hype. The chicken was a little dry and the salad plus fries were both average. I would recommend trying.
Delicious and fun takes on brats. Nice open seating with plenty of room for large parties. Has a beer hall feel but with a more modern/industrial touch. Would be a great place to enjoy some food and beer while watching a hockey game.
Great casual place for a meal with family or friends. Best part is the Toast checkout system at every table. Fast easy service. Great beers and sausages.
The spaetzle is a unique take on Mac & cheese. The egg based pasta is more tender, and the cheese sauce is rich with a garnish of a delicately herbed breadcrumb. Would recommend the spaetzle and the Korean fried chicken! The interior has shared cafeteria like tables which make it easy to socialize. A fun and casual place to hang with friends. You order via a QR code or you can ask the server to take your order.
A large hall of of tables in chairs in classic beer house style. The pretzels are very small and not that great, won’t recommend them. The wursts are great and tasty. Your order from your phone.
The food was wonderful. The staff wasnt helpful when we didnt know how to scan and order online, the couple next helped us more than staff. Also why provide a generous tip when we had to do everything. Only service provided was bringing food to the table. No one checked on us during the meal, when we needed something it took 10 min to get someones attention. I didnt take pictures because I dont recommend dinning in, order takeout and enjoy the great food in the comfort of your own home.
Visited a few times and love the food despite the rising prices but dont know why I continue to receive poor service. Im always very polite and tip well. Usually, its from a few of the servers. Its not a one off or one person but no smiles or kindness anywhere. Ordering online through the QR code is easy but dont like having to close out everything including tip when placing order.
Visited Wursthall with a couple of friends last week and we definitely had a great time. The Wursts are really tasty and they have a great selection of flavors. Youll definitely be able to find a spot to sit down as there is a ton of indoor and outdoor seating. My only complaint is the menu is quite small and there arent too many appetizers to choose from. Would definitely appreciate if the menu was reworked a tad. Otherwise, everything was splendid. Would recommend as a great spot to grab some food and drinks with friends or/and family.
It was honestly the best restaurant I’ve been to in the Bay Area. Service was quick, place was clean, and everything about the food was done right. The bratwurst was so juicy and broke off like butter, the smashburger was cooked perfectly. I’ve also never had potatoes done this well. Fills up quite quick around noon.
Quick service and awesome team. If you have not been here you are missing something awesome and extraordinary!
Great spot to hang and grab some really good food. I’m not a huge fan of sausages, but they do them really well with some great toppings. Their buns are 👌🏼. The standout was actually the Mac and cheese from the appetizers. So creamy and delicious, they do it different than anyone else. Definitely worth coming and trying.
Excellent food, friendly staff, quick service! Stopped here for dinner on the way home from the beach. Both indoor and outdoor seating available and you scan the barcode to order food (the staff brings it to the table). We both ordered the wurst which was excellent. The potato salad was particularly delicious which surprised as Ive only ever had more mayo based potato salad. The triple fried potatoes were good but basically square french fries. If I could have ordered a bag of the pretzel pieces that they put on the brownie, I definitely would have. The bathrooms are a bit tricky to get to and kind of in a scary hallway but it all worked out. Highly recommend!
Yummy food and nice atmosphere. I really wanted to have some nice german food and this hit the spot. I had the Bier bartwurst with side of lemon slaw. It was really good and really went well with the hot toddy (we sat outdoors and it was a chilly evening). Their deviled eggs are amazing. We ordered them twice. Definitely going to go back on a nice warm evening to try their beer with another one of the wursts. Yum!!
Finally got a chance to try this restaurant. Ever since Ive seen the Korean chicken sandwich bon serious eats website I wanted to try it, then I find out the chef owns this restaurant nearby my house. Anyways, clean restaurant, outdoor seating available, friendly staff. You self order with your phone scanning the QR code. I of course ordered the Korean chicken sandwich, friend got the seared chicken sandwich, and also got the kinder Burger for the kid. The kinder Burger is a good portion for kids. Sorry no pics of that or the seared chicken sandwich. Omg, the thrice cooked potatoes. Get these now. If you like fries this is a must get. Super crispy, and fluffy insides, so good. The Korean chicken sandwich, chicken was also super crispy and moist inside. It lived up to my expectations.
Great sausages. They offer mustard on aide if you request it as it is not on the menu. Large selection of beers and cocktails. Has indoor and large outdoor seating. Casual vibe.
Very fancy deviled eggs. Also had the chickpeas and currywurst. Lots of outdoor seating with easy online ordering. Great place for a quick bite or socializing with friends in an outdoor setting!
4.5 stars but rounding up. Almost no wait on a weekend for lunch with no reservations for a party of 5. Loved being able to order food by scanning the QR code on the table. Be sure to order a free cup of water online with your order or you’ll end up parched from thirst.Ordered the Pastrami & Swisswurst and the chickpea and pickled carrots. Sausage was delicious and the sauerkraut really brings me back to my time spent in Germany. The chickpea and pickled carrots contained almost no carrots! Which was a bit disappointing. Probably shouldn’t advertise an ingredient as a menu item when there’s almost none inside. It was still tasty but I was really looking for a vegetable component to my meal but it was all starch.
Good place, with great and quick service. A beer list is not very comprehensive. In fact there were a few options of German beers. I wish there were more such options. The spicy chicken sandwich was very tasty, however my sausage with sauerkraut were not the best.
Fun, lively atmosphere. Fully staffed with smiling friendly servers. Lots of seating, in and out. I would call this German fusion. Creative combos of flavors and seriously goos sausage and bratwurst. Highly recommend the fresh warm pretzel and honey butter. Yum!
Enjoyed the beers and the food a lot. It was a bit cold on a Friday evening but they have plenty of outdoor seating with a lot of heaters. Theres also seating inside.Food came out quick and the portions were generous especially the Wiener Schnitzel!!
Great beer selection, great wurst selection, I liked the curry wurst a lot. The ordering system is cool with a qr menu/order/payment system its quick and easy. The only thing they need is those soft big pretzels and this place would be perfect.
Great casual spot for hangouts and group happy hours. In additional to a wide selection of drinks and beers on tap, they have great food offerings. Their hearty wursts with fried potatoes are pricey but very flavorful and well cooked! Also highly recommend their chicken schnitzel and salads.
The Korean chicken bites were dry and super thickly breaded for some reason. The sausages were ok, the beers are great though.
Delicious food and beer. I love all the outdoor seating! Parking is a challenge but i will definitely be back!
Great chicken and huge beers 🍻. 1 Liter now that is a place where all you need is just one and be done. Great staff as well.
Went with co-workers to say farewell to an awesome colleague. With that said, the food was awesome. Beer list is also quite extensive with the majority German but also local brews.Seating available outside and inside. Inside seating is well ventilated. Highly recommend.
Food is excellent. Service is okay. HOWEVER, its extremely annoying that I can only order food/drinks (and see the full menuon their website by scanning the QR code at the table. I couldnt even order an extra drink at the bar after ordering our meal. What if I didnt bring my phone? Do they take cash? Clearly some issues to resolve here, but the food is great and if you enjoy the whole bay-area technology-only approach to things youll love this place. I wont be coming back if they stick with the current ordering model.
Love this place. Theres so much spacious outdoor seating and the indoor seating is open concept with high ceilings. The wursts are sous vide so it comes out perfect every time. Id highly recommend the hot italian and the chicken schnitzel
Enjoyable experience, the QR code menus to table delivery is quite smooth just make sure if you want water to put it in your first order as the app doesnt like a 0$ water only order. I was a tad disappointed by the Korean chicken bites, they were so heavily seasoned the dipping sauce ended up with more season in it then I did sauce on the bite, but hey its a Korean dish, at a German restaurant, from a Japanese American chef so i should have made a judgement call there, my friend struggled with sandwich version due to the spice drying out his mouth.Beer selection was good, bratwurst was great I skipped the bun to eat more, the sweet mustard was the highlight of the dish, super delicious.
My 14 yr old recommended this place because he’s been watching the chef online on his food prep. He said that the chef is an Architect&Biology graduate from MIT.Food+Science+Architect=Extraordinarily Yummy! Customer service is great!
Great sausages: tender and juicy. Currywurst was plate-licking good. Wide selection of local and German beers too. Is it as good as Top Dog at 1 AM? No. But theres no way to hate a meal with sausages, crispy potatoes, and big steins of beer.
Ordered the Korean chicken sandwich with potatoes. It was spicy and the slaw inside neutralized the heat. It got messy halfway through the sandwich and started to fall apart due to the slaw was slipping out the bun. The vegan potatoes were awesome. Tasty and crunchy and the ketchup just threw it overboard.
Very average food. The smash burger was better than the bratwurst however the bun overwhelmed the meat as there was a higher bread to meat ratio. I was surprised there werent more authentic brats to choose from, so we chose the beir brat thinking it would be the most German, though the overly sweet toppings instead of traditional German mustard took away from the brat and made the whole dish very average. Our server seemed miserable, and not very happy. She actually seemed mad when I asked to move to slightly more shaded table. Speaking of which, they only have 2 umberallas for all tables, and neither umberalla actually shades the tables (note we were there at 1pm). If seating stays like this, Id recommend not going until fall or until they buy more shade. Overall, disappointing experience for the actual cost of the meal - however, Im still a huge Kenji fan.
This was the first time Ive been to Wursthall, but it certainly wont be the last! I wasnt too sure about this place at first due to the price of their meals, but I was blown away by how delicious it was! They have various types of sausages that come with unique toppings. The flavors work so well together especially when paired with one of their beers. They have plenty of seats for outdoor dining, and they allow you to order through an app so it makes getting your meal extra quick!
To be honest, when friends suggested this place, I was hesitant because who really loves German food? But, I was pleasantly surprised! They have a selection of sauces (mostly mustardsto go with your meal, and plenty of non wurst options if you arent feeling sausage that day. The staff was friendly, and the food came incredibly quickly.Fair warning: they dont take cash, so dont forget your wallet!
Incredible experience. Great beer list with both domestic craft beers and European beers. Super good menu with both traditional flavors and new twists on classics. Im confident you cant go wrong with anything you order.
I checked out Wursthall while visiting from Chicago with my family. Im a big fan of Kenjis recipes, so dining at his restaurant was on my must-do list.I had read some negative reviews, and Im quite picky, so I set my expectations low. Boy was I wrong. We sat at the kids table in the back, which worked out perfectly. My kids (2 and 5were extremely tired, so having our own space made it much easier. They got to color on a big sheet of paper while my husband and I enjoyed our drinks and appetizer. They had tiny kindergarten chairs and we sat on the block on the opposite side of the table. It wasnt super comfortable for the adults, but I would still sit there again because of how well it worked out with the kids.We started with the Korean-style chicken and waffles. The chicken made me think of Kenjis Chick-fil-A copycat recipe with different spices. The waffle was unique with a little bit of sweet and savory. It was a perfect blend of sweet, spicy, savory, and sour with the pickles. We shared the Little Gem salad. Its their version of a Caesar salad. Its rare to find a salad thats perfectly seasoned. Im pretty sure they even salted the lettuce, which IMO, makes it so much better.Knowing we would be getting full after two appetizers, we decided to share the vegan doner kebap. It was my first time having anything Impossible ™, and I cant believe I waited so long. I seriously wouldnt know the difference. I also loved the onions and cabbage that came with it.My kids shared the spaetzle and potato salad from the kids menu. The little one gobbled up the spaetzle, and my pickle-loving 5 year old liked the potato salad. The potato salad has gotten some bad reviews, but I loved it. I would definitely get that again for myself. I let them order the kids brownie. One was big enough for all four of us to share considering we were so full.Service was very almost perfect. The server even laughed at my terrible jokes. A few other employees helped out when he was busy.A very minor complaint- the food came out almost too fast. We had only eaten a few bites of the appetizer before the salad and kebap came out. Not a big deal at all, but it might have been a problem with space if we had been sitting at the regular tables.
Great decor with high ceiling, with a feel of outdoor. Lots of beer choices! Specializing in German sausages. Ordered several appetizers and sausage sandwiches. There were all quite delicious, special flavors! Fun place to get together with friends, relax, and enjoy good food and beer.
