Traditional Cantonese and Szechuan dishes served in a dark wood interior with fretwork screens.
This was an exceptionally bad Chinese meal. Oil was burnt and the cumin beef was swimming in grease- whole dish tasted like paraffin. No taste of cumin, no vegetables at all that usually accompany the dish except for a single piece of bamboo (!!!!). Egg fried rice was oily with little egg. No seasoning - Wrong rice. No garnish or spring onions. Worst of all was salt and pepper squid. It arrived in 5mm of oil. The batter had fallen off every piece of squid and turned to mush in the oil - the squid itself was rubbery and smelt rank. I can’t actually believe they sent it out. It was a late order but really no excuse for it - Hands down the worst Chinese meal I’ve had in years.
The Grandmas BBC chicken was too salty to eat. Forgot a couple of items on our order. Bill came to £120+ for 2 of us. Expensive, salty, strange atmosphere.
Were charged an extra 20 for something that never came and didnt order. Dishes were limited and we ordered a moreexpensive dish, just for them to say they changed it for something cheaper because it was unavailable, still paying the more expensive price. Paid 90 altogether for each of us (6having three bites and leaving hungry. Tried to talk to waiters and they said they would go to the kitchen and nothing was changed with the order. Do not recommend, cheaper chinese food around with better quality and quantity.
Average food, very below average service.Booked a table in advance; when arriving at said time, was made to wait another 25 minutes (of which I chased the staff a couple of times as we were given no accurate informationuntil a table was available - clearly our booking had not been registered.Upon finally being seated, again, the staff were incredibly inattentive. Would not come to the table, we would be forced to fo up and ask for updates regularly, with the food not arriving until at least 50-60 minutes after our table was booked. When it comes to dietary requirements, avoid this place. I believe the accounts regardings being served meat when ordering a vegetarian option, and I woild go as far as to say I would not be surprised if many vegetarians have unknowingly eaten meat here. The two stars are because the food was not horrendous, and the volume was not loud. Accounts of equiptment, furniture and general rubbish are correct; the entranceway inside is a messy tip, the place appears in a state of remodeling. Would not reccommend.
It is hard to believe that this Chinese Restaurant has been recommended in the top three in Bristol, by some sites. The food itself was nice but it was badly let down by the cleanliness, staff and atmosphere. The ladies toilet was out of order, the gents therefore had to be shared. The toilet was filthy and there wasnt any soap! When the staff were informed of this they brought some hand cleanser to the table, still no proper soap for the toilet. The waiter was totally clueless and had clearly not been taught how to wait tables or his way around the food menu or drinks menu.It was a cold evening both outside and inside the restaurant as the main double door was left wide open, we had to ask for it to be closed. There were people continually coming and going through the restaurant, they were not customers so it felt very strange, people just coming in off the street and there were also several deliveroo staff in and out waiting for food in the foyer, the waiter was absent from the dining area most of the evening and this did not provide a nice dining experience. The seating was very uncomfortable and the foyer of the restaurant was like a dumping ground with pushchairs and junk lying around just making it look untidy. Not an enjoyable way to spend my daughters Birthday. Please avoid, they are obviously living off a dated reputation and are still very expensive. Please view my other reviews, I have never left a review this bad before just to give you some idea of how poor this place is. It doesnt deserve the one star I had to give it to be able to leave a review.
Havent been here for a few years. Was lovely to come back. Hasnt changed a huge amount. Just excellent, straightforward Chinese food. Friendly, helpful staff. A true character of a proprietor and on top of all that - excellent value.Thank you for last night. We will try not to leave it so long between visits next time. 🤣
Amazing food and staff, the vegan chilli beef was the best Ive ever had. Will definitely be going again
Disappointing experience. Paid £150 for the set meal. The food was okay but the cost ended up being a lot more than the individual dishes and some bits (the duck as an examplewere not as represented on the website. Also, some food was missing and we were not told on collection yet still charged for it. When we phoned up after realising this, they informed us that they had run out of those dishes. They ‘were not able’ to process a refund and could (or wouldoffer no other acceptable solution to sort the meal out. I used to like it there but honestly I wouldn’t recommend it.
Fabulous service and food at Wongs Chinese restaurant Denmark street Bristol! Would always recommend it! ❤️👍
Have come here regularly for big group dinners over the past few years and basically everyone Ive invited has been impressed by the food - well balanced flavours, excellent texture experience for the meat, fish and vegetables, and lots of choice for vegans and meat eaters alike. The portions per plate are pretty large, so I recommend sharing dishes in a larger group to get the best experience. Plus, its gotten some tech updates - a QR code menu that collects orders from everyone at the table and a cute serving robot have been added to make the experience more streamlined.
Wongs is a splendid setting for a delicious meal. Large stone tigers guard the entrance to a magnificently decorated interior. Annie Wong is friendly, expertly familiar with the details of her menu and the ingredients of the dishes, and she is delightfully funny and mischievous. Wongs has an extensive vegan menu that has clearly been carefully designed - different meat alternatives have been properly and thoughtfully integrated into the dishes, where other restaurants just offer simple substitutions as an afterthought. I wish that this gem was better known in the Bristol Vegan community as they have clearly made a big effort.
Very delicious and authentic Chinese food. The lady manager is also super friendly. Love it! But be patient, there are always lots of customers.
Taste good! Not expensive!
Very authentic Sichuan food! The service was really awesome and the birthday song sang by this cute robot was so sweet. Strongly recommended :)
Food was not fresh at all, tasted like chicken that was at the very end of its expiry date. Found the beef to be of very low quality and frankly the pork looked disgusting. Everything just smelled so awful. The prices are very expensive for what you get as well. How this place stays in business will be forever a mystery. Highly recommended Cathay rendezvous instead!
Incredible!Huge portions and the best tasting Chinese meal Ive ever had!
Booked a table of 8-10 for a friends birthday. A new oven was being delivered so we were hassled to order as soon as we entered. The lady wouldn’t leave the table and continued to try to persuade us to order despite saying everything we tried ordering wasn’t available. Very bad service, we ended up leaving and going to a lovely Italian round the corner.
Excellent hospitality and authentic Chinese food, you would be very impressed by their interior design and fit all your imagination of East Asia. Do say Hi to the restaurant owner, a bright and lovely lady, 5 stars recommendation 😆
This place was absolutely gorgeous and loved the food i do recommend to come here and the staff are really nice and helpful as one of the blonde waitresses has gave me help and told me her favourite dish which made try it ofcourse and it qas deliciousI do really recommend to come her and dine
When one of the dishes served tastes and smells exactly like an ash tray, and just the smell of it on the table is making the group wretch - you know something is deeply, deeply wrong.Honestly, Id recommend sending in a food safety inspector.Oh and the prices are wild - I presume because people will only visit once...
Very expensive for what it is service charge of 8.50 and the food came late... I came in and there was no customers at the time. Ordered My food and within 10 minutes it started to get busy with loads of customers. The funny thing they all got served before me and they charged me service charge lol a can of coke is £2.50 lol please dont go here expensive and it doesnt taste that good very bad experience.
Really nice place to go, spectacular decoration, food was delicious. However if you go on friday and saturdays they are very very busy so you might wait more than a usual day
Lovely food, and big portions. The Mao Zedong poster was🔥. I recommend the duck and the pork belly. The jellyfish (in the middlewas ok, and it was the first time I had jelly fish so I cant really say much about how it was prepared. Overall a nice experience.
I just been here for a couple of weeks ago from China, fantastic meals I ever had in Bristol. I heard about the dim sum made by Hongkongese which is authentic. I can enjoy various cuisine in Wongs😋
We went there last night, as a party of 6 and had a wonderful meal. The food was so tasty, the staff were great and the ambiance was lovely. Im definitely going again!
The place to come for authentic Chinese food in Bristol. We visited Wongs for a friends birthday dinner & was blown away by the fantastic food & warm hospitality. The menu is packed with a myriad of options to accommodate - there is something for everyone. Give it a try!
Weve been there many times. Always very nice food. Friendly and very helpful staff too. Highly recommend.
Ordered on Deliveroo.Dim sum platter came with only one type of each instead of the advertised two.The kung po chicken came without any veggies or peanuts, meat was so dry and just didnt taste right. For the obnoxious price I expected some quality.
The place looks so ‘classy’ and there’s even an award at the entrance. For such a classy place why is the food so bad? 🤢 I went with my chinese friend who was a new student coming from back home and she was even shocked by how bad it was! The chicken literally tasted like it was old or frozen. Also staff is so slow for the fact that the place was so empty.
Great quality Chinese food from all the regions. Authentic, tasty and filling. Sure it is not the same as eating a meal in Beijing but it is not far off. For the best experience eat in the restaurant and enjoy the meals with a great atmosphere.Friendly and helpful staff. Parking nearby is not easy unless you are lucky getting a space but an easy walk from the centre. My current favourite Chinese restaurant in Bristol.
Went for a birthday meal and the restaurant was excellent. Love the decor of the restaurant and the food was brilliant and is an authentic taste of Chinese cuisine. The staff made us very welcome and provided excellent service throughout the evening. Definitely coming back to try more of their menu
Awful taste. As an Asian who eats Chinese food regularly and have tried most Chinese restaurants in Bristol, I can confirm that the food is surprisingly very very very bad. And definitely overpriced for the bad food they offer.Things we ordered:熊掌豆腐 Bear paw tofu casserole招牌炒饭 house special fried rice香辣鸡 grandma style spicy chickenFried rice:The fried rice doesnt taste like fried rice at all. Its more like normal white rice mixed with soy sauce. the stir fry carrots inside are still hard, raw and uncooked. Theres no "fry" taste to it and the rice is soggy.Spicy chicken:not sure where is the spicy element. its oddly sweet, i think theyve seasoned fried chicken with sugar and some chilli powder that just tastes raw and out of place. They pair it with big sliced uncooked capsicums.Tofu:The only eatable dish but taste normal, nothing special.Overall very disappointed as Ive heard good things about the restaurant a few years back. Will never return.
Horrendous experience. Arrived, mob handed. Friendly waitress. We queried whether the house tea & prawn crackers were free - we were told yes.Food was ok - nothing special. I’d actually say for the price it was mediocre.Upon receiving the bill we noticed an outrageous 10% service charge - and we’d also been charged for the prawn crackers + house tea. We queried this with the waiter and then noticed we had been overcharged for other items. He told the lady who I believe is one of the owners. She flew into what can only be described as a fit of rage. Her face went puce and she charged over to our table SHOUTING to the dismay of other diners. She accused our party of wanting ‘our entire bill free’ when in reality we were querying what the staff had told us in good faith + the overcharging on the menu. This standoff continued for around 10 minutes. Our party calmly tried to negotiate with the lady, but the damage was done. She was furious with us and told us not to come back.Don’t worry - we won’t be back. It was a terrible experience. Average food, high prices and a horrific attitude from the lady owner. Avoid at ALL costs.
Returned after 4 years as this was somewhere I used to visit every week when I used to work in Bristol. Great Food just as I remember, menu is a bit smaller than it used to be but still contained many favourites. Highly recommend the Grandmas Chicken and the Sichuan Boiled Beef, Roast Duck was very nice too! As a couple of other reviews have mentioned service is a little slower than normal due to short staffing caused by the pandemic and subsequent shortage of hospitality staff across the country, cant really blame them for this though as this is across the board with the majority of places I have visited in the last 6 months having the same problem. This was by no means an issue though as the food more than made up for it and the owner and waiter were working frantically to keep everyone happy.
Ordered from deliveroo from what claimed to be a fully vegan Chinese, this is what comes up when you put the address in on Google thats given and the telephone number matches up as well. I ordered what was meant to be noodles with vegan chicken, however what I got was actual chicken as confirmed by my friends who eat meat. I threw up after eating it as I havent eaten meat in 5 years and was very upset by it. I called the number for Wongs and they confirmed that everything they sell is vegan and the chicken is vegan. Im very confused if this is an honest mistake but the whole thing seems very bizarre with there being no official website or Google page for "12 vegan Chinese restaurant" which is what theyre called on Deliveroo except this Chinese. I feel deeply upset by what happened to me and really hope it was just an honest mistake however I would not order from there ever again.
Food was okay but the service was EXTREMELY slow. There was only one waiter to serve the entire restaurant as well as Uber deliveries! They constantly received Uber orders and the notification kept ringing till a waiter whos been extremely busy came back. So disturbing. Food was just average, hot and sour soup was oddly sweet, but highly recommend tofu with salt and pepper (starter- light and crispy outside but soft inside.
The dishes are extremely stale, the taste is disgusting, there is no service at all!Dont come!
We had crispy beef with sweet and sour sauce, it was delicious! We also ordered stir-fried spinach with garlic but they were out of spinach so they changed it into some other greens but it was still great. Quite big portions, every menu is good for sharing. Also, the lady (the owner?was very nice to the customers.
So so so good! Amazing lovely staff and the vegan food is incredible! The fake meat is suspiciously good!! Couldnt reccomend more!
Easily the best vegan Chinese food in Bristol! Service is fantastic and the chef clearly cares both about her customers experience and the quality of the food, cannot recommend enough.
Really lovely experience. I really like proper, not too anglesised Chinese food, and they really delivered. The decor is lovely, and its quite a high class restaurant. The staff were very friendly, and the manager came out to chat with us and tended to us. Im vegan and they specially made me some vegan dishes. Its a little pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Ive never had a negative experience here, the night has always turned out really nicely :)This is a really good place to go if you want a special night.
We had some excellent vegan Chinese food at Wongs last night, where they have an impressive vegan menu.I think we ordered nearly half of the vegan options out of excitement. Everything was tasty and very obviously freshly made.BONUS: Thier head chef, Annie, went vegan three months ago, and is very happy to feed all the vegans in Bristol!
Finished a long day at the hospital starving hungry and weary. Ordered some food with Just Eat out of pure laziness and couldnt believe my eyes when it was delivered.A portion of salt and chilli ribs at £6.80 containing 3 lonely ribs rattling around in the box! Im assuming the delivery guy ate most of them first, but I cant email my photo to Wongs to ask clarification on their portion size as I cant find an email address for them.Ill just avoid in future, it just seemed like a massive rip off. The food wasnt even particularly nice.Tiny tiny portions.
We ordered from Wongs using UberEats on 3rd of March 2021.The quality of the food was good and the order was here fairly quick. We ordered Black Bean Sauce Beef, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and Lemon Chicken + 1 Egg fried rice. I must say the quantity was okay for 2 people but i rated this as 4 stars due to the price. Its on the £££ especially when considering its a take away and you dont get the service and setting of the restaurant... 42£ was a bit much.
One of my occasional haunts over the years . Food has always been consistently good and seems to have won a BBC food award since my last visit. Well worth a visit.
If you are wondering how this beautiful Chinese restaurant could be the Number 1 Chinese restaurant in the UK, I highly recommend you come to try it yourself. It won’t let you down. Thanks Wong’s for your hospitality. We enjoyed every moment in your restaurant. Thanks again.
Food is decent but nothing special. Few dishes are above take away level but prices are of a 1st class restaurant. It is still very dark inside and not value for money.
Wongs is one of the best chineese restiraunts in Bristol. In fact it has won awards for how good it is. The owner is friendly and helpfull and will assist you with your food selection. I would recommend the chineese dumplings the chilly fish broth and the braised pork belly.
Delicious spicy dishes. Really friendly owner who loves what she does. Worth a detour to Bristol. But one must like spicy sichuan food.
We drove all the way from London to try Mama Wongs after she cane to our attention on The Best of British Takeaways. It was totally worth it; the taste is truly authentic Chinese home cooking, not the normal bog standard local takeaway fare. Best dishes include Mouthwatering Hot & Numbing Chicken, Sichuan Boiled Chilli Beef & Sichuan Mapo Tofu! N.B. If you are used to dishes that are more tailored for western palettes (i.e. Sweet & Sour dishesdont bother coming - its not that sort of restaurant, however if you want true oriental flavours of home, then make the journey!
