Prinsengracht 279, 1016 GW Amsterdam, Netherlands, Amsterdam
A crown-topped spire rises from this Renaissance-era Protestant church where Rembrandt is buried.
Beautiful church inside and out.
Really nice church to look around and theyre was a free music recital when I visited.
Closed for no reason with an unfriendly staff member at the door
Beautiful historic church in West Amsterdam. Pass through it regularly when walking ot cycling to centrum, and every time it catches my attention with its glorious architecture.
beautiful!finally a cosmopolitan progressive protestant church
Great if you are interested in listening to organ performances
One of (if notthe biggest "Kerk" of Amsterdam. Located nearby the Anne Frank Huis Museum. Both beautiful from the outside and the inside. Anecdotal fact : Rembrandts son is buried inside the Church, beneath one of the large carved stone lining the bottom of the stoned floor. There are numbers on the Churchs stones, and one of them is Rembrandts son one. Little clue : take a look at the pillars inside the Church to find which graved stone you should look at... Furthermore, this Kerk is palatial. Very beautiful ✅
Beautiful architecture and a nice spot surrounded by the canal and very close to the Anne frank museum.
Arguably the most beautiful Protestant church in Amsterdam. Regrettably it was closed during my visit today but am determined to return and admire the interior. For now I could only admire the magnificent building only on the outside.
all so quiet
Whats not to like about this place. It is free to enter (touchless donation options available- bright, airy and beautiful! So much history. Right next to the Anne Frank museum, the heart of Amsterdam West and Jordaan. I hear the church bells ring all day from my apartment.I didnt realize we could enter for free. It was my first time here. Very wonderful. We were on a Dutch language class field trip so had to find some clues in there. Its a must see when visiting Amsterdam. I suggest maybe skipping the Anne Frank house if the lines are long, (but lately with online reservations, seems okay!), and go here. I doubt the tower is open these days with Covid times, but maybe in two, three years when Covid is gone, it will be open once again.
Very nice church where Rembrandt is buried along with his son. Records of which tomb he is in have been lost but his son is in 143.Very limited public hours so plan ahead and know that Google has the wrong hours. 11-14 local time only and not open Sundays
View by the canal is amazing, very nice walk along the sides.
Nice church..close to Anne Frank House
Its tower has the best view of the city! You should definitely climb it to have a 360° view of Amsterdam from above! They are making guided tours at certain hours with limited people. So its necessary to check which one is available. The way to the top is quite narrow and upright sometimes.
Amazing that Rembrandt is buried here. The tower climb and resulting city view was a cool experience. Great place to go if you don’t get tickets to the Anne Frank House :)
This is a must see in Amsterdam. Best views of the city!
Church itself closed for renovations in 2019 but trip up the bell tower well worthwhile
Went up to to of Bell tower, excellent view of the city and an exciting trip! 😁😁🤪
An interesting Renaissance church with an extremely high bell tower. Here is buried Rembrandt. Unfortunately, during our visit, the church was closed and we could not enter inside.Nearby is Anne Franks house.
Beautiful piece of history and an iconic sight in Amsterdam. Adds a lot of character to the surrounding area and can be seen clearly coming from any direction. I have not been inside so I wouldnt know myself, but heard the view from the tower is spectacular.
A part from its splendid beauty this is a cultural highlight and a fully functional religious community. Every gay pride the huge banner they carry with many hands during the march is flying from its tower . A truly welcoming inclusive spiritual place of worship.
Not happy. We really wanted to go on the tour and also club the tower. Renovations are fine to miss out on the church but it was card payment only for the tower. Not much point having euros exchanged to then have to use your card 🙄😐
Beautiful landmark. Anne Frank house near by. Worth a visit.
The clock tower is a very nice aesthetic addition to the surrounding timely buildings and Westerkerk itself is a building of amazing design and history.
Amazing centuries old church where Rembrandt was buried. The outside is beautiful and the architecture is stunning. Loved my visit.
Westerkerk (free enryis a large 17th-century church on the banks of Prinsengracht (canaland Westermarkt in the city centre of Amsterdam. It is located next to the popular Anne Frank House and makes for a nice church visit if you are interested in these type attractions. Opening hours are 10am to 3pm (Mon-Friand 11am to 3pm (Satand entry is free to the public.Historically, Westerkerk is one of the churches designed by architect Hendrick de Keyser after the Dutch Reformation in the late 16th century. It was completed in 1631 in Dutch Renaissance style. This is particularly evident in the beautiful and decorative bell tower, which is topped by steeple that resembles the Crown of Maximilian of Austria. The interior by comparison is rather simple, as is typical of reformed Protestant and Calvinist churches in the city. A delightful Duyschot organ, chandeliers, and unassuming pulpit more or less round off the churches basic interior. Spend a few minutes browsing the open nave and two side aisles and that should be sufficient for a general visit to the church.Outside Westerkerk is a small market area with a couple of shops and kiosks. You will see a statue of Anne Frank just next to the church as well as the Homo Monument on the bank of the Keisersgracht (canalbehind Westerkerk.Note: If you want to get a good look at the tower, make your way up or down Prinsengracht 40-50 metres. From these positions, you can take photos that include the church and bell tower.Note: The Westerkerk tower (Westertorenis open to the public if you want to climb to its top for views of the city. Check the website for updated times and prices if interested.
A historical Protectant ChurchFree entranceWorth a visit as Next to Anne Frank house
Only guided tours to the belfry, should sign up in advance. Great views of Amsterdam from the top.
One of the first protestant churches in Amsterdam, meant to show off the wealth of the merchant class. Tower of over 85 metres, that leans slightly over, a landmark in Amsterdam. The crown on top of the tower has been painted over in different colours throughout the ages to reflect catholic (gold and whiteor protestant (blueprevalence.
The tour runs every 30 mins and was definitely worth the money (8 Euros I think). You get a nice overview of the historical significance of this tower and then begin to climb up the narrow stairs to the lookout point. The views up top are obviously the highlight.
Tours fill up quick because they only take 6 people every half hour. The guide was very well informed about the history of the tower. Few things to note; the tour only goes up half way up the tower and the steps become steep like ladders at the top. But I would still recommended it!
Really nice guide, very good trip for the view :)
In this church the famous painter Rembrandt was buried. It has the highest tower - 85 meters, on which the heaviest bell in the capital hangs. You can enter the tower to view the city skyline from its top.
You can visit church tower (just as like any other towers in the cityonly in a guided group tour. Tours starts every 30 minutes. During the tour a guide will describe the history of the tower and the bells in it. View of the city from the tower is very nice, totaly worth the money.
Really enjoyed the views from the "top". It was actually half way up the tower, but still enough to have some great views over Amsterdam.
Had to wait 30 minutes and pay 8€ just to climb up to only half of the tower. The church was closed (on a Monday morning??and even the guide had no idea why.Nice view from the tower, but by paying so much I would have expected to hear some interesting story and detail about the church, which didnt happen.
We fell lucky when going to visit here and managed to get a tour of the bell tower without having to wait too long, we were took up some rickety old wooden steps to as high as we were allowed to go and led out on to a balcony and were able to take photos, the views over Amsterdam were amazing, just wish my girlfriend had gone up the last set of steps to see them, unfortunately her fear of highs got to her and when we went back down we found her clinging to an oak beam, she was laughing about it but she wouldnt budge another step any further upwards! Well worth a visit if you dont mind heights and appreciate good views!!
Very close to the Anne Frank House. Not a lot to see, but Rembrandt is buried here and it was warm inside, so it was worth it on a cold day.
Didnt get to go up the Bell tower or take a tour of the church but the architecture is really cool and fun to see and the views are amazing around the area. Also nice thats its along the way to the Anne Frank House so be sure to check that out after admiring the church.
Just next to Anne Frank’s house, a bright church to look around and buy some postcards and decorations. You could go up to the tower but it’s not available in the winter from Nov to March.
Warning: DONT go on the tour of the bell tower if you are claustrophobic, unable to go up and down extremely steep staircases (there are 6 steep flights of stairs), or afraid of heights. If you are neither of these, DO the tour; its great way to get an awesome 360-view of the city! Probably going during the daytime/day light hours is best for maximum view of the city.
Close to the Ann Frank house it has a great view of central Amsterdam and amazing architecture.
Booked the tower too late to see inside church, but tower itself was more than worth it. Guide limits the group to no more than 6 and for a good reason. Anyone who climbed up to any church towers in Western Europe will know why... Its old, steep, narrow and did I mention steep? Some parts are literally climbing up on something semblance of staircase. Definitely not for people with claustrophobia or cant squeeze into narrow place. Oh, and old buildings dont care about building code of US, so dont expect shortcuts like elevator either.Anyways, midlevel area of the tower (unsure if the top level is accessible to visitorsprovides fantastic view of Amsterdam. With lively guides going through the history of the tower, it is fun.
The tower is awesome, nice architecture. The entry fee is 8€ may be but its worth it. Climbing up and enjoying the view from up brings it all back. But the queue was long and it took about an hour for our group. Tram stops just infront of it and there are Asian restaurants right infront of the building. Totally enjoyed it.
I climbed up the tower it was a lot of fun for €8! We went up in groups of 6 and we stopped at each floor to learn some history of the tower and Amsterdam👍🏻 Had a really friendly tour guide, highly recommend ✨ There was also AMAZING Views at the top and got some great photos ❤
Nice architecture and organs at the rear of the church. Rembrandt is reportedly buried here but no one knows the actual location. However, his son can be found under stone 143, in the centre of the church. Entrance is free and a small fee is taken from visitors wanting to climb the tower.
Beautiful! I visited because of Anne Frank, but the building itself is beautiful. Its located very close to her house and her statue is also right outside. Definitely visit!
Couldnt say anything about the church as I didnt visit it, however the bell tower visit is impressive. The receptionist/tour guide was very nice. She took an interest in all of the visitors and made it an interesting tour. The view from above was worth the steps to reach it! The way up does get quite narrow and if youre tall you have to be careful in places.
For just €7.50 you get a great 30-minute tour of Westerkerk bell tower. It was a little scary walking up and down the narrow staircases, but worth the 360 degree view from the top! Add it to your list when in Amaterdam, steps away from the Anne Frank House.
