Stylish, upscale destination for creative Pacific NW dishes, with a popular tasting menu.
We have had really delicious lunch and dinner meals here at West Restaurant over the past 12 years.. Because it is closing at the end of December 2019, we decided that we must eat at this very special restaurant one more time.. the restaurant atmosphere has always been special and the staff greet you with authentic warmth.. then the menu is always creative...
Alas, this will be my only review of the wonderful restaurant, West. It will be closing down at the end of the year and I wanted to experience it one more time.I went there with a special lady on Sunday. I had the tasting menu and she had the vegetarian tasting menu. We enjoyed every plate from the appetizers to the main courses. Everything was amazing. We especially loved the "orange creamsicle" pre-dessert.We have been to West to celebrate a number of special occasions and it has always been fantastic. Food was great.Service was great. Atmosphere was great.Thank you for 22 years of excellent dining experiences in Vancouver. West will be missed.Cheers!
What a night! Went with a group of ten to celebrate my birthday and did they deliver. The food was great, as was the service, even on such a busy night (Friday). And the wine list was a treat to read for us wine geeks. Such a shame its closing in another month, but at least we got back.
We came here after hearing they would be closing down soon, which is unfortunately because the food and service here is top notch. It was my first time coming here so decided to go with the tasting menu. Everything we had was amazing - from the first course to the last. I enjoyed the appetizers the best; the mains were good - the duck was done well; dessert was ok but did not really stood out like the appetizers did. It was my first time here and it’s a shame I didn’t discover it sooner cause I would definitely like to try their other dishes.
Great service, delicious food and very nice atmosphere. I really loved the creative menu as well.
I still wished they had their ribeye... but the AAA Alberta bistro filet was not bad.
Great lunch options, food came very quickly. The restaurant wasn’t very busy but the waitress had a memory lapse and forgot to serve my cheese with my pasta until 10 minutes later (with a little bit of hunting her down). The beef tartare was good. My clam linguine was delicious, although on the pricy side ($29 for about 8 clams). The flavour was there, though. We spent about 2 hours chatting and they didn’t rush us out. Atmosphere was nice.
I came here with my boyfriend for my birthday, the food was delicious, the atmosphere was very relaxing. Our waiter was amazing, he found out it was my birthday and when my desert came out they wrote happy birthday on the dish in chocolate. It was very sweet and Ill definitely be coming back again! Also the 3 course dinner was very reasonably priced
Love at first bite, and hope to last.Great vibes, personnel are committed, professional to the utmost, top culinary expertise, discipline with pride, integrity, courteous and pleasant. Our compliment and appreciation to all the food we ordered, cant say much to the ones we didnt but they certainly look good. We enjoyed the greetings, customer services and smiles... quite uplifting. our prayers and blessing that all stay the same for all the upcoming chance encounters... and then some!KUDOS to all of you at WEST. GODSPEED.Be PROSPEROUS, yall deserve it!!!
I’ve been here a couple of time. The first time the service was great, the staff helped me picking the perfect wine and it became one of my white wines now. The 2nd time our waiter was not good, he seemed to be rushing to other places rather than taking a few minutes to help us.The food is great though, not to mention, the best salad I’ve ever had! I hate salads and can never understand why people are crazy about them, West made it all so clear.
I dont know why it took me so long to pay West a visit! Their food is amazing (was there for Brunchand the price is pretty fair as well. I would say Id come here before going to the chain restaurants.
Went at 5:15 pm on a Sunday night. Receptionist/hostess/front of house was not friendly. There was 1 lady at the bar and two people seated at a table. It was pretty empty. We were seated and ordered drinks. Drinks were great. Server was kind. We decided we did not want to eat there. The server was receptive of our choice. Then the manager came over and he was less receptive so we left. He made a joke when we were paying “you should stay to see if we fill up tonight!” Nice attempt at a save. Well 6 drinks turned into 2. A lot of lost business on a quiet Sunday night.
Came here for dine out with two other friends. $45 dinner menu. Food is well made, meat and fish are very soft and tender. But not sure if flavours are to rave about. Would be pricey if not for dine out.
The Best Canadian restaurant in South Granville area with large selection of wine list.
Absolutely deplorable service. Unfortunately, I am not alluding to it being busy and a waiter trying, we experienced pure rudeness, profanity under the breath as our waiter walked away, and no resolution from management. Food was mediocre, but we were shocked this restaurant is still highly rated. After our experience, we came to share how negative it was (we never share), and realized, many others feel the same. Management should tighten things up, particularly regarding the hiring process and professionalism. This should not even be a question at this price point! West was still a favourite last year, this restaurant is Unfortunately one that is off our list, and not even in the running for an average restaurant in Vancouver. Seems like an entirely different restaurant than last winter. Save your time and money.
We came here for our anniversary and it was nice that we had a card at the table from the restaurant. We ordered the 3 course set, I had the pork chop and hubby substituted with the steak for extra $$. I guess because it’s a set course, they left the plating the same. Which I was surprised. I would think they will plate it differently with the different meat. So the decorative flavouring on my plate for the pork complemented it whereas not so much for the beef. The steak was also very chewy for medium rare. For dessert, I asked for the chocolate Soufflé, it came out like a soft lava cake and super sweet even before you put a sauce on it. I asked the server before I ordered it if it was sweet and she said it wasn’t if I don’t put the sauce in. I had to send it back. I couldn’t enjoy it. The kitchen send us two little bite size spice cake, it was simple but I expected something more. Our server was more interested in chatting with the regulars than serving us. It was very hard to get his attention. He blamed it on he had to walk all the way back from the kitchen to our table, which is by the window. Yes, it’s a long walk but it’s your job.Unfortunately we did not have a good experience here and won’t be coming back.
Very disappointed by our dinner experience at West. Didnt start off well when the host answered the phone in the middle of talking to us, but was saved by the Maitred amazing service - he was really great. We both ordered the steak ($43and it was lackluster. We ordered medium rare, but one of the steaks was served blue. The steaks were stringy and chewy, very unsatisfactory. Great drink selection, so would recommend sitting at the bar and ordering a cocktail - but would not recommend their food.
It was the first time and we had an amazing anniversary dinner at West restaurant. We sat at the chefs table and it was quite entertaining to watch the kitchen as the head chef sounds so funny. I was very pleased with all the small details and effort that they put in order to make our dinner so special such as preparing a happy anniversary card on the table, decorating dessert with chocolate writing. The food was absolutely amazing. Especially the complementary bread was super flavourful. The server was very well-mannered and considerate. We will definitely come back even though its not a special occasion.
Overall, we loved brunch at West. We started with duck salad and beet with burrata. The salad was too heavy on vinaigrette and the duck trimmings were sweeter and drier that we would prefer. The beet dish overwhelmed us with complex flavour, but the creaminess if the burrata pared down the complexity. Although appetizers were not particularly up our alley, we absolutely loved the mains: perfectly cooked rolled omelet and melting halibut brandade. The service was impeccable and we would love to come back for dinner.
Tried their seasonal three course set menu for $39 and it was great. Chefs complimentary beet mousse was bit salty. Oysters were very fresh but with pre-added sauce, it wasnt as refreshing as typical oyster sauce. Two main courses I tasted were awesome. I loved my pork as it was perfectly cooked. The meat was very soft and Juicy. I tried chocolate soufflé for my dessert. This was the best dessert I tried so far. The staffs were friendly and the restaurant was kind enough to let our big group to come in 30 minutes before their regular hours so we are on our company event schedule.
Our recent visit left some of our party very disappointed. We ordered Italian Alba truffles to our dishes and they were flavourless. Either the truffles were the cheap and flavourless Chinese truffles sold from Italy masquerading as Italian truffles, or, they were picked too soon, or, they were a cultivated version. Not impressed and will never order truffles from West again. On the bright side our server was very good as per usual. My lamb shank was not the greatest this time around but the risotto was very, very good. For 4 people our cheque was just under $800 and we were not impressed.
Exquisite quality. Attention to detail. Beautiful plating. Luxurious service. Extraordinary flavours. Pure balance. All of these are fitting descriptions of West Restaurant on Granville and 14th Avenue. Most think of classy restaurants as those situated in downtown with valet parking. But quality and class are not only reserved for the downtown core. West Restaurant is located just outside the downtown area but still within the heart of Vancouver and they deliver delicate dishes well worth the price tag.Over the summer, they are offering their 3-course meal for $39, a fabulous price for the satisfaction that you will experience. From the first bite you will be craving for more. The freshest ingredients are selected and prepared so that the flavours hit your palate in a blast of finesse and balance. Finesse in how the chef manages to extract the wholeness of the unique flavours and balance in how savoury, sweet, tart, and spicy are woven together in perfect unity. The same can be said of their textures. An evening out at West will leave you satisfied as you enjoy your classy dining experience here with flavours that you will not quickly forget.
Celebrated our anniversary with the tasting menu at West. Staff were attentive. Food balanced and tasty. Great start to the evening
Good food. We had a three course meal special plus a risotto appetizer. I had a melon soup, salmon and strawberry shortcake. Hub had osyters, beef, and cheesecake. Food presentation was pretty and taste really good. Good amount of food. Good service. Good atmosphere. Parking was abit tricky but there was plenty of street parking.
Visited West for my birthday dinner.Pros:-extensive drink/wine menu-$39 summer prix fixe menu is good value (recommend BC strawberry shortcake for dessert... which they wrote happy birthday on)-put a birthday postcard on the table-gave us complimentary tiny cold mushroom appetizer of some sort (tasted whatever, but giving it complimentary was a nice touch)-the complimentary chocolate truffles at the end of the meal was nice touchCons:-Dated decor-Poorest service from our server. Shec ould barely crack a smile (BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!)
Went for dinner to celebrate our granddaughters graduation. We did not have a reservation but were there early at 5:30. We all had the 3 course special for 39 bucks. Great value for outstanding food! Excellent service and a beautiful room. The vegetarians were very pleased with their meals, the fish eaters loved theirs and I enjoyed my steak. You need to be seated before 6 on a weekend to be able to order the 3 course special so if you dont mind dining early, its a great deal. We were going to a play on Granville Island, so the timing worked well for us.
Truely a hidden gem in Vancouver. This was my first time here. Food was unbelievably great. Service was impeccable. The entire experience is great. They make you feel super comfortable and provide finger tasting dishes courtesy of the chef. Would go back in the future.
Had a great experience at West. Went their for my 21st birthday and its definitely a place to try. The menu is simple and sophisticated at the same time, and the food there was amazing. We were fortunate enough to be able to be seated at one of their chefs table and it made the whole experience even better.
Absolutely delicious, unforgettable experience. They give u a warm welcome and give u nice, cozy seats. They start you off with some warm delicious bread and give you time to look at the wide assortment on their menu. The food is high quality, and tastes fresh. I recommend their signature West burgers. Meat is tender, juicy and delicious. Brioche bun crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and served with a small stack of fries, a perfect experience.
Best restaurant in town! Food is michelin star quality.
West was more or less the first fine dining restaurant I went to more than 10 years ago. It was a fond memory, so I had high expectations on my much overdue second visit. The restaurant was much busier (and noisierthan I expected on a Friday evening. It seems the vibe was more modern rather than traditional fine dining. Bread was excellent, we gobbled that down. Oysters were fine as well. The mains, however, were a bit disappointing. I thought my lamb duo was plated a bit strangely with carrots sticking out of the plate, and there were only 4 small pieces of lamb. My partners sablefish on rice was a poor imitation of Chinese cooking (although the fish was tender). The souffle dessert was so tiny, like the size of a two bite brownie. Overall I left feeling the meal was rather average west coast cuisine, and I could have the same quality elsewhere for a lower price.
Food was impeccable and the restaurant offered a comfortable, yet noisy with screaming babies, seating. Note to parents: bring your infants to restaurants that welcome babies. Most people who dine in particular restaurants would like to do so in a relaxing atmosphere following a stressful week. A screaming baby is not conducive to relaxation. Please be more considerate.
Outstanding meal and wine pairing, the brioche with the first course was absolutely spectacular. The lamb like butter, melt in your mouth. Visiting Vancouver? Eat here! Chef Bobby Milheron is a force to be reckoned with. Thank you for the amazing meal!
Very good food, but it is definitely one of those restaurants that youd see comedy sketches about: fine dining with tiny portions. Honestly, I think they play that game a bit on the skimpy side... My appetizer of smoked salmon was two cubes less than 1cm in dimension. As tasty as it was, it feels like they are playing the game a bit. Id go more often if it didnt feel like they were seeing how far they could push reputation. No doubt the quality is there, but the premium is harder to swallow than the food ;)
Beautiful place, very professional service, good selection of wine and cocktails and very interesting menu. The food was good but I was missing some bolder flavors.
West is a prime venue in Vancouver to thoroughly experience food via multiple inputs - taste, texture, visual artistry, verbal description, etc...We have dined here several times over the past several years to appreciate the complexity and nuances of food and its associated atmosphere. Having been to many fine-dining establishments in Vancouver over the years, West is one of the best for people who really appreciate food and its potential depth (flavour, texture, scent, etc.and in relation to other components in the dishes. In addition to being on the higher end of places to go, this is not a place to go to when you have a cold/aren’t interested in an experience/looking to eat and fill up. Rather, it’s a place to go to truly experience food and savour appropriately-sized portions for this experience (not huge while not tiny). Added little touches to celebrate events are appreciated.
Went here for Dine Out, overall it was okay. Service is pretty standard for a fancy modern restaurant. Pretty big wine + drinks selection. Good sound level for having a conversation.Smoked salmon had a good texture. First attempt at steak entree had a tendon running through the middle, but the mushrooms and onion sauce were flavourful and well done. No one at my table loved their dessert, the meringue on the chocolate cake was strangely grainy, the panna cottas genoise base was flat and soaking in liquid (not in the good way, it became a really weird soggy texture).Overall, pretty worth it for Dine Out.
Hmmm, scallops cooked beautifully , my egg white topped cocktail looks like unreal cute.thats it. :P
The service was exceptional and the only reason I am giving more than one star, but the food was extremely underwhelming and overpriced. I had the seven course seafood tasting and my husband had the vegetarian tasting. Between the two, we only enjoyed 3 dishes: the scallop, the ravioli and the lemon cake dessert. Otherwise, ingredients did not taste fresh, the combinations of ingredients were bizarre in some dishes, and the onion soup even tasted burnt. I was very disappointed in the food, as I had heard great things about it and will not be returning to this restaurant.
Love the open kitchen and atmosphere in the restaurant. Food is tasty and each dish has its own unique taste.

The meal was fantastic, West definitely lived up to the hype in my opinion. The food was creative, local, and delicious. The service was friendly, attentive, and efficient. The space was nicely decorated (albeit a bit dated), intimate without being intrusive. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, we would definitely recommend dining here.
Excellent food and service. Very accommodating and careful with severe food allergies. Will gladly trust them with my life any time.
Normally love this place, but they served chum salmon last time we were there! Chum salmon. Its main use is canning and for bait fish. I was a commercial salmon fisherman for years, and we never ate chum. We ate Silver, Sockeye, and King. But never chum or pink. To come to this very nice place, be charged premium fish prices, and then be served bait fish was completely surprising. Service is excellent. Always. And the other dishes were fantastic, especially the salads. But come on, guys!
Excellent food and wine pairings in a slightly dated space. My wife and I had the tasting menus - Land and Sea - and each course was excellent, a thoughtful mix of flavours, perfectly and a few surprises that make you realize how much effort goes in behind the scenes to make these delights. The wines were matched perfectly to the courses too. I came away perfectly full - but if you want a giant steak, go elsewhere! All the staff were knowledgable and friendly. We took our time over our meal, and the staff moved us to accommodate a large group later in the evening, which was handled very well, but the space we moved to was quite cold, some diners had even put their jackets on, which seemed like a strange thing not to notice, but they sorted that out immediately too - maybe no-one else thought to ask.Overall it was an excellent experience and Id absolutely recommend it for a romantic meal.
2016.12 - good food, excellent cocktails, not too pricey. Had the Christmas Star and the Roman holiday, and the sable fish (goodand ravioli (good sauce, but ravioli itself only OK).
The brussel sprouts here are heavenly. Nothing else here matches that, except maybe the sablefish. The desserts are mediocre.
Came on a quiet night and the waiter was very friendly and responsive to the questions that we had. The food was delicious, especially the diver caught scallops. They were fresh and it was well paired with the bacon jam and red cabbage. The experience was very enjoyable. We had a handful of drinks and the raspberry bounce was very cheerful and delish.
Had an amazing experience here.Ordered the vegetarian tasting menu which consisted of 7 delicious courses. Highlights include a Yukon Gold Gnocchi, Mushroom Tortellini, Carrot Soup, Pear Salad... all so good with very fresh ingredients and remarkable presentation. While I wouldve liked to have tried more cocktails, the one I did have was quite tasty. Their virgin mix drinks were very good and didnt leave me missing the booze too much.Cant recommend this place enough.
I dont know that a meal this expensive will ever be a good value, but it was definitely a wonderful experience. We came in a bit late but the host seated us anyways, and our waiter was efficient and informative. The entire meal was well prepared, but I was particularly impressed by the octopus salad, it featured the most savoury cephalopod that Ive ever sampled. I was also impressed by the dessert, I had a plum concoction with ice cream that tasted like corn puffs, if you can imagine that being a pleasant experience. Overall, I was impressed, the experience is definitely one of the best that Ive had in Vancouver.
