Wellington Zoo in Wellington
Description
We had a wonderful day at the zoo. It was a little bit rainy but i guess it kept the school holiday crowds away. We were greeted by the gibbons morning call which was awesome to see. All of the staff were wonderful especially keeper Jacob that we saw at multiple keeper talks through out the day. The enclosures were well maintained and designed. The signage was amazing and really showed how much they value all of the animals welfare.
MoreCute, tucked away Zoo. Its relatively small and catering is sparse. Would have liked to get the family some treats but queuing took too long. Apart from that it was a nice stroll and the animals seem to be well looked after with neatly maintained facilities. Parking was bit of challenge.
MoreLovely zoo, lots of animals.Takes us around 3 hours with decent stops at each habitat while eating on the run.
MoreGood fun day out with the kids. The staff talks were interesting and engaging. Their interest in their charges came through very clearly.
MoreExcellent day out. It was very busy as it was the school holidays and heaps of people there but its a huge place and plenty of room. The animals were all interesting with the chimpanzees bring the highlight. Its a big walk around so be prepared. Plenty of zoo staff giving educational talks, well worth a visit. Parking tricky as barrow streets and we had to park about a 10 minute away.
MoreMy Grandsons absolute most favourite day out. He likes to go every school holidays and its very rare not to see all of the animals out. They are well cared for and the staff are amazing - really helpful and informative. A Great day out.
MoreMust visit when in wellington with kids. We went as zoo opened. Great to avoid crowds however a lot of enclosures were empty as staff were cleaning them. Always easy to circle back and see them again.
MoreReally nice place for the family. Loved the lions...
Visited on Sept 2022:A wonderful place to be with kids and family. Not many animals but whatever they have, they are kept in a very good condition, they tried to make the environment as natural as possible for each species. Very green and beautiful place, well maintained.Talk about sessions are very informative, which gives a a lot of information about the animal/bird.Try to go early in the day to catch all the talk about sessions.
MoreWe went on a Wednesday start of spring. The sun was out but it was still cold and windy. there werent many people visiting . The Zoo is set on an incline. Theres no clear route to follow so theres alot of walking up and down hills. Not ideal for wheelchairs. Quite a steep walk for toddlers and Mums pushing strollers. Alot of enclosures under construction and limited animals to view. Dont think it was worth the entry price $27. The Banana Cafe was closed. The old Kiosk is now a reptile display. The whole atmosphere is depressing. Theres nothing enjoyable about it. Even the staff look miserable. Go to Auckland Zoo its very serene, well maintained, great cafeteria food, the animals look content in their home environment, the staff friendly, informative and encourage questions. Much nicer experience for the family.
MoreHad an excellent day here with the kids, managed to spot all the animals (except the lions, who were hiding all dayquite a few very steep hills, so wear your comfortable shoes, and bring some water.
MoreHad a meerkat enclosure experience which was great. Keeper was really good and knowledgeable and the meerkats were delightful.
MoreOne of the nicest Zoo arround you can lose alot of time there A+
A delightful Zoo with lots to see and do for small kids and big ones too. Lovely restaurant Rex with good choice of healthy food. Can see the zoo is well loved by staff too. Even if it’s blowing a northerly. Still well sheltered. Wheelchair and stroller accessible
MoreSuch a wonderful guest experience. You see more of the animals than at Auckland Zoo. Bit of a hike as it’s on a massive hill, so not the best for grandma. We got soooo close to the giraffes. Was grand! And the baby chimpanzee!
MoreSuch a wonderful zoo! So clean and well kept and the zookeepers really seem to love the animals! All the workers were so nice! Such a lovely place to walk and enjoy nature too!
MoreEven on a wet day, the zoo has plenty to offer. The animals are clearly well looked after by the amazing, knowledgeable staff. I highly recommend doing a Close Encounter if you can, they are a great way to learn more about the animals, while raising funds for fantastic causes.
MoreMy two tamariki (childrenand I visited the Wellington Zoo for the 1st time over the weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.A highlight for us was seeing the Māori atua in the locals section as seeing these pou represented as they are with a description beside them was very awe inspiring. It was really cool to see so much Te reo Māori signs and how it has been incorporated throughout the zoo. Mīharo mahi Wellington Zoo!We stayed for the whole day. Kids said they enjoyed building a fort by Tane Mahuta, listening to the keepers talking about the animals and finding more about them and getting to see all the animals. The zoo is well maintained with clean facilities. Staff were nice and the ladies in the reception area and gift shop were very friendly and answered all the questions we asked with passion and enthusiasm which was awesome. We also had lunch at the Cafe just outside the zoo and what beautiful meals they severed by polite and friendly staff.Overall an excellent day spent at the zoo due to the attentive, friendly approach of staff and clean facilities.Thank you to all the pukumahi (hardworkingstaff at the Wellington Zoo for everything that you do 💛🧡💛

It was awesome to take a walk at the zoo today. I saw heaps of animals but if you arent into teenagers giggling and attempting to provoke animals attention probably dont go on the weekend as there were heaps today.
MoreVery cool zoo but no hippos! Plenty of other awesome animals though in good healthy enclosures. Very friendly helpful staff and good parking especially off peak. Takes at least half the day to see all the sights. Highly recommend.
MoreVery friendly staff, loved seing the baby chimp and cotton-top tamarin. Would love to go back and do some of the behind the scenes experiences
MoreWe enjoyed our visit. Some of the animals didnt come out to play, but thats how it is with animals eh.Worth a visit for a couple of hours of animal watching 👍
MoreI hadnt visited the zoo for ages and was pleasantly surprised with ALL the attractions. Interesting to see farm animals at the zoo, as I expect to see the more exotic, not commonly found in NZ creatures.Lots of talks scheduled throughout the day which helped in planning our tour. Places to sit, listen to and watch pre-recorded messages were great. I took small children 3&4yrs, and they loved it! Multiple places to toilet were appreciated. Also play areas and places for a picnic lunch dotted all around the Zoo were a bonus.Look forward to seeing the yet to be built enclosure for the snow Leopards next time.A great place for the whole family to spend the day.
MoreTop rate, family freindly and very clean. Saw lots of animals
Parking is frustrating, thought there would be more animals. Good price though, tiger feeding was great and the giraffes pen was great, got really close to them.
MoreLots of information about conservation of other countries endangered species was really nice. Really Cool variety of insects and spiders id never seen
MoreThere were very many animals, very, fun
This is one of our favourite zoos in NZ. Have travelled a few times just to visit. Love the talks which are free.
MoreI have mixed feelings about this zoo. It is clearly well kept, but many animals have very low space to stay and they go round and round and round... also, having all these slopes does not help... the zoo itself is quite small with not so many animals, but the slopes make you feel tired quickly. Probably a more flatter spot would have worked better. It also lack of a proper carpark space. It shares the carpark area with the near Newton Park which, hosting sports events during weekends, makes it very difficult to find a spot for your car.
MoreThis zoo is amazing with so many different animals I think i prefer this one over Auckland zoo or Hamilton zoo here they have lions, otter and even a sunbear. My son loved patting the sheep and I enjoyed patting the kangaroo. We went on a quite Monday and found some animals to be very friendly and social coming up close. The entrance fee was very good for the experience and the souvenir shop has a decent amount of affordable items. The staff were great too very friendly, informative and helpful.
MoreGreat fun day out for kids! Gorgeous gorgeous baby chimp and super friendly one eyed giraffe. We all loved it!
MoreTook my children to Wellington zoo for the first time. Great service, they all got a map and the extent of the zoo is limitless. Bug city, giraffes, penguins, monkeys, birds, bears and many seating areas, picnic tables and interactive play options for children of all ages. A great place to spend an entire day with the family.
MoreIt wasnt good visit.01/04/22We didnt see Lion 🦁 Tiger 🐅 Sun bear🐻some other animals too. When we look at Tigers place we saw one staff member cleaning the where Tiger 🐯 should be,that is okay but please avoid this things at visitors time.Thank you.
Morethe zoo is usually my favorite place but today was really disappointing 😞 didnt see half the animals that were supposed to be there and alot of the ones we saw were very sad looking. stopped to have some food with the kids, the hot chips were $10 so we asked how much do you get cause we had to feed 5 people. then they chucked this box (literally chucked it in front of usso we were like sweet 2 boxes will feed all of us..............then we opened the boxes and they were 1/4 full. if you charge a ridiculous price for food there should be a good amount!!! ESPECIALLY WHEN CUSTOMERS ASK FIRST 🙄
MoreAmazing! Beautiful scenery, great views and a great set up to enjoy the beautiful creatures.
MoreThey dont have Elephants and Rhinoceros. But what they have there are all well kept, big spaces for animals, clean areas and tried to keep them as in their natural environment as possible. I think its not so friendly with people with wheelchair though. They were building place for Snow leopard, will definitely go back to see snow leopard.
MoreGreat place to watch the animals and spend the day with the family.
Great little zoo with up close exhibits and plenty of areas for kids to play. Worth it for the meerkat babies alone!
MoreWas a great afternoon! Didnt see all the animals we were hoping for, but those we did were great. Also a fan of the conservation and breeding programs theyre a part of!
MoreDefinitely what you make of it, went with a group and was slightly disappointed the first half of the trip, lack of animals to see and the cafe inside the zoo was shut, hot day and we were looking forward to a cold beverage and a bite to eat. If we knew the cafe inside was shut we would have got lunch at the entrance cafe. Second half was amazing and the trip was made with the chimpanzee close encounters with the kids.
MoreSome of the animals werent in the mood to be outside but it was a cool experience... A really good visit
MoreBeautiful place to stroll around. For a less steep uphill, I suggest keeping right at the otters, going past the cafe and starting at the tarantulas, red panda, cheetahs and chimpanzees. Then keeping right and going past the Australian animals, lemurs, capybaras, giraffes. Then stop for lunch at the cafe, and go right towards the tiger and sun bear. Then down past the Kea, through the farm yard and then getting to the pengiuns at around 2 - they only really come out in the late afternoon. Its then an easy stroll past the monkeys and kiwis back to the otters and the exit.
MoreA decent zoo that took about 2 hours to walk/explore around with a 5 year old. The animals seem relatively happy and well cared for. Parking can be tricky as they don’t seem to have a car park. Convenient to the city.
MoreGreat place have been there for red panda, capiburra, and meercat close encouters all great . Went on a sunny day , staff were friendly and attended feeding talks , great day .Also had a zoo ranger doing kea enrichment and she did a brief talk and the kea got super close . We got to ask more questions about the kea and how she bacame a zoo ranger .
MoreGreat place for the whole family to enjoy the experience of seeing animals. A variety of species and well set out area
MoreSpent a great few hours here and plan to return soon to keep exploring!Staff are all lovely, had a great chat about spiders after flagging down the Harley Morenstein look alike!
MoreA small zoo by international standards, but they make sure your experience is great despite the limited number of animals. Highly recommend the Red Panda encounter, they literally eat out of your hand and sit on your lap. The staff are very friendly and informative and you can tell they have a passion for what they do. Also reccommend the various talks they have during the day, they are interesting and fun. Great layout also and food and facilities are adequate. Many of the enclosures allow you to see the animals up close which is great, and even small children have good vantage points. Definitely worth a day out.
MoreThe zoo is quite small so you can probably see everything within less than half a day.The best part of the zoo are the giraffes. The enclosure where the put their food allows you to come very close to them. Very enjoyable for the kids.
MoreIts an amazing place. Its a small zoo (probably Im comparing to the zoos in Australia ! But its locked smack in the city centreThey have heaps of animals (kinda disappointed as we did not get to see kangaroo - hence the 4 stars). Its friendly for the kids as well - they have a farm animal areaOne thing we really enjoyed was the layout. My friend whos from Africa said that the Savana section reminded him of his home. The actual recreation of African houses are pretty amazingDo check it out if you are an animal lover, also if you are a student - there is student pricing!
