Cool museum in a historic building with various unique exhibits showcasing the region's history.
Quite okay for free entry.Rude staff at the counter. Needs more training on the staff. City council please don’t waste tax payers’ money on young, unprofessional and rude employees.
Those lions upstairs bred in captivity, lived in one the the worst climates for them to exist in their whole lives, died and then got poorly taxidermied and then held on display at the papa for all to see until they were put in storage and until they were gonna get taken to the tip until the curator saw and took them upstairs instead.Nice
So glad to have visited. It had a modern exhibition running at the same time and loads of interesting local historical information. Loved this museum more than I did Te Papa.
A nice museum, not a big one, easy to see everything in 40 minutes. There are some beautiful Maori artworks. Free entry.
Cool museum with displays in Māori and English, explains the Natural History of New Zealand’s ecosystems.
Generously free entry, great artifacts and history, warm inside, clean.
Great museum lots to see and do. Even our 3 year old loved it.
Such a fun and interactive museum! So much to see and all for free. Great day out for everyone.
Very informative and well maintained. Enjoyed our visit there.
Absolutely recommended. I did the 45 minutes tour with Emma (NZ$12). Fabulous! Thanks Emma ( tour guide for sharing your knowledge, your passion and your positive attitude along the tour. At the museum I learned so many interesting things about Wellington and it was a fun, useful experience where you can learn so many interesting stories from this part of the world.
Wonderful museum with hundreds (thousands?of fascinating objects & short, easy to read explanations about each piece. It transports you back in time to see Kupe exploring in the 15th century to life on the waterfront in the 19th century & ip to present day.The boys loved the holographic tale of Tane & the Wahine Commemoration is poignant & respectful. There is something for everyone here - dont miss the Attic if you are a steampunk fan!
It is wonderful. If you are in New Zealand you should visit once in a lifetime. It says all history of Newzealand
Took my 7 and 3 year olds They had a great adventure. I enjoyed myself, it is a fantastic museum to spend some time amongst the artifacts and learning
Cool exhibit, an aerial photo of Wellington turned into a huge carpet. Excellent resolution, could spot individual houses. Worth going 👍
I really enjoy history, therefore it is only natural that I also enjoy museums. While I have been to Te Papa, and absolutely enjoyed that behemoth of an experience, I really found this visit to be more intimate and personal. With many personal accounts and regular references to the people or whenua of the area, I found this experience to be very informative as well as breathtaking.I grew up in New Zealand, although down in the south island, but had been very aware of some of the significant events detailed here. The likes of the Wahine disaster, the Springbok anti-apartheid protests, and not forgetting the amazing mahi of Dame Whina Cooper, these displays made the stories very real and personal. Please visit this spot if you can, and perhaps throw a few dollars in the donation bin, there is a lot of aroha and history here. You will enjoy it.
Nice place to walk around and have a look. Awesome looking place to take kids as it had some interactive features and pretty neat items to look at as well as worksheets for them. However the lifts could have had better signage as they are available but kinda to the side a bit.
Great little Museum with a massive variety of local exhibits and history. Lots of cool movies and interactive displays for the whole family. Much bigger on the inside than it looks on the out. The Wahine exhibit was a highlight. Highly recommend.
Easy to find. A great room we used for a workshop. Great curios with so much to see. Well maintained bathrooms. Great location, close to food Court. Close to boardwalk, so easy to incorporate on a stroll. Staff were awesome. Vintage floors were of another world. Great experience.
Free entry. Donations optional. This is a great museum. Not huge, but a diverse range of interesting exhibits for young and old. We have been a few times, and exhibits do change, so they are actively maintaining the museum.Thank you!
Well planned out, plenty space to stand read and absorb. Short informative films. Free so added bonus. Great displays on Wellingyon history and creation.
Great interactive museum, my son 6 years old had a really good time too. Nice exhibition about the history of the town.
Its OK, its something to do, uses up about an hours worth of time but overall a random selection of objects and displays. The Wahine display is good.
This museum is well worth a visit. Packed with treasures and fantastic displays, a great balance of information to read and items to see. Lots of interactive stuff to hook the kids in too. They especially loved the collection of items where they got to vote on which history they believed was true. The Wahine story was presented with great respect too.
Loved it, great museum, so much relevant Wellington info, will come again.
A real hidden gem! We spent so much time here, admiring a different displays...really nicely done, very interesting!
Really underrated little museum and there is actually lots in there! Great Wellington history around shipping etc and some nice kiwiana history. Great for kids too although not much hands on exhibits like there is at Te Papa. Well worth a visit
Fantastic little Museum with plenty to see as the story of Wellington is explained. Many of the exhibits are interactive which makes our children explore with their curiosity.Make sure you go all the way to the attic space, as it truly is full of great things linking to the past.
Felt welcomed as soon as we walked through the door(by Emmajust made us feel relaxed immediately. Wiramu was our guide and lucky for us we were the only people on the tour! Such an incredible way to be introduced to the museum and history of Wellington. He is very knowledgeable and is passionate about telling you which definitely makes the tour more interesting! We got the package deal through Bookme but wouldve paid way more just for the tour - highly recommend, especially if you re short on time. The fishnchips (includedare from a local restaurant less than 2mins from the museum- just beautiful! The boat is big enough to accommodate over 60 people easily so wasnt too much of an issue a getting a seat. Make sure you go upstairs and sit at the front for the most amazing views! Wine and beer available on board for a reasonable cost. Somes/Magic Island is just magic, especially on a beautiful day like we had! Fantastic trip highly recommend for visitors and Wellingtonians alike!
Very informative and interesting. Best way to know about Wellington city. Highly recommended if your visiting the city.
You will see here things you cannot find in Te Papa, the history of New Zealand commerce, Maritime industry, Wellington business history and the like. Visit it you will not be disappointed. 😎
Great museum to spend a few hours. The timeline is very informative.
Much better than my expectation. Full of history of Wellington and well informed videos. Personally, I liked this museum more than Te papa and Parliament tours. The exhibition, suffrage in stitches, was very interesting project.
My favorite museum in Wellington thus far. The quality of materials, unique presentation and story-telling really helps deepen appreciation for New Zealands history. The layout was also very easily navigable and almost intimate. A must-visit when in Wellington.
Wonderful place with family to learn and spend a quality time. Place is well thought. Parking was not easy to get.
Even though we have been here several times, we are still finding new things to explore. So many fascinating artifacts and bits of history. The fact that Wellington is my home makes it even more interesting! I found some of the first things from the Absolutely Positively Wellington campaign today and had no idea it all started so long ago, way back in 1990!Well done team 😇
This is a very good and interesting museum about the history of Wellington I enjoyed visiting. Admission is free (they have a couple of bins if you want to leave an optional donation (I did and the customer service at the front desk was excellent. I am not a huge fan of museums bit I really liked this one and is worth a visit (especially on a rainy or very windy day when weather conditions are not great in Wellington. Highly recommended.
You can smell the burlap sacks, hear the gulls, and see the (mechanicalrats scuttling around in this refurbished 1892 bond store, now a museum that portrays the history of the original Māori tribes and the European settlers who arrived around 1840. Spread over four floors, the displays cover work, leisure, crime, and education in Wellington, telling stories of local life that will be of interest to visitors of all ages.
Every time we visit Wellington, visiting the museum is a must. First Its best to catch the lift up to level 4, the attic and work your way down the levels. There is a map that is given to you at reception if you ask. Each floor has a theme and many large and small items to find, read and explore. Lots of interactive display visual and auditory to teach you interesting facts about Wellingtons history. Two of my favourites are the What we do in the shadows costumes and time displays on the ground floor. I highly recommend that if you are visiting Wellington visit the museum and its free.
Its beautiful to see such a well kept museum is free for entry. Highly encourage all to make a donation at the box when you visit
This place seemed like your bog standard museum when I walked in.Its not your bog standard museum, this place is amazing. Four levels that tell the story of Wellington, surprises and interesting pieces around every corner.Free entry, with donations encouraged. The gift store at the end is great too. I wish I could have spent more time here.
An understated find on the waterfront, often overlooked in the light of the National Museum around the corner. Staff are exceptionally friendly and most helpful. Allow 1-2 hours for a casual visit, maybe 3 if local history is your fare.
One of attractions in Wellington. If you want to enjoy it thoroughly than please spend around 2 to 3 hours inside the museum.
Was really surprised. I learned loads about our history. An interactive and fun experience. Put aside a few hours. Also of note.. its free!
Great museum, well worth a visit. I started at the top and worked down. Lots of interesting things and interactive stuff for kids.
Beautiful place....Located in the heart of downtown Wellington. Small but exciting building. The museum displays history and old storyline of Wellington harbour.
During the school holidays I took my daughter here. Gold coin donation, plenty of interactive exhibits and lots to see, feel and learn.Showed my daughter the Waihene ferry sinking, watched the video and she learnt a little more than what she heard at preschool.Very cool place, would definitely recommend to families travelling with young and teenage children. Loads to do! Make sure you check out the attic!!
One of the places you could spend a good half or an hour if visiting nearby spots by the harbour. There are only a handful of tourists around when I was there, exactly the opposite scenario as there was at Te Papa Museum. Most of the exhibits could be generalised as about the trade and maritime history of Wellington. Also has a small gift shop where you can purchase some souvenir items. Not really a must see place for me but if you got the time, would still be worth visiting.
Great museum! Well laid out exhibits with good signage. Definitely dont miss the top floor "attic" as it has some of the most fun stuff, and the film presentations are very well done. There are so many interesting tidbits that theres sure to be something interesting for everyone.
We were staying in a nearby hotel so decided to visit, lovely old building on several floors filled with many interesting things.little shop on the ground floor run by friendly staff. Old Wellington Harbour board museum on the top floor was in mint condition.
Great museum. I actually enjoy this one better than the papa. Interesting exhibits all related to Wellington. Interesting presentations, some great mini videos and interactive displays. Very well presented and always clean. Highly recommend visiting.
