Displays showcasing Javanese puppetry, including puppets, dolls, sculptures & paintings.
They have a great collections but need bit more extra treatment because the room is a little stuffy. Also need more descriptions notes on each collection. And perhaps they could do a little improvement for the notes written in English.
Wonderful place, great for the entire family. The puppets were so much fun to see up close.
Easily the best museum I have ever been to. The history speaks for itself, unremarkable. This place has so much puppets that its unreal. There are tons of puppets, dolls, instrument and even stages. Totally recommended.
A must visit museum for locals and tourists. Located in Kota Tua Jakarta, so in walking distance you can get the ambience of Old Batavia & to Museum Fatahillah too! 🤩
Strange museum a bit redondant. Short visit but for a vers low price 5000rp
Interesting place if you are into Indonesian puppet tradition. Wheelchair accessible.Recommended to hire a guide. I had a good one who showed me most of the places in Jakarta for well under 40$Her contact : +62 882-6145-3614

The museum building occupies the site of a church which was built in 1640, under the name of the Old Dutch Church. In 1732, the church was renovated and the name was changed into the New Dutch Church (Dutch: De Nieuwe Hollandsche Kerk). In 1808, an earthquake destroyed the church. Later in 1912, a building was constructed in the Neo-Renaissance style on the site, which initially functioned as a warehouse belonging to Geo Wehry & Co. In 1938, the building was renovated, following Dutch colonial architecture. The garden of the Wayang Museum, located on the former yard of the Dutch church, was the funeral site of General Governor Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Later, the building was bought by the Batavia Society of Arts and Sciences, an institution dealing with Indonesian culture and science. The institution then transferred this building to the Old Batavia Foundation and on December 22, 1939, it was made a museum under the name of Old Batavia Museum. In 1957, after the independence of Indonesia, the building was transferred to the Institute of Indonesian Culture and on September 17, 1962, to the Ministry of Education and Culture. On June 23, 1968, the DKI Jakarta Administration made the building into the Wayang Museum; the inauguration took place on August 13, 1975.
Authentic historical in this town very affordable i can say is cheap but worthy as a gold, all space tematical rooms well treat and great maintanaince. All service great during ramadhan. Sunny and warm weather suite all checking in and out put all together. Dont forget check all writen historical, charming object also pictures, about batavia before and begining.
The museum has so much inprovement from the last time I visited it 5 yrs ago. However some areas are still dark, humid and unpleasant to visit.
Awesome place in Jakarta to see many collections of wayang kulit (shadow puppet),wayang golek (wooden puppet),and other kind of wayang...definitely worth place to visit
This museum very unique and very special for puppet. In Indonesia we have wooden puppet, leather puppet (shadow puppetand also human puppet. But on this museum we can see alot of collections of wooden puppet and also shadow puppet. In the middle of this museum building there is also the grave yard of Dutch governor general since this museum used to be Church during Dutch colonial. This museum has 2 floors. First is for wooden puppet collections and second floor is for leather puppet and puppet collections from all over the world.Every Sunday this museum has special performance of puppet show. And there is also souvenir shop that sells puppet.
Feel cringe and bored when started but enjoy in the middle of journey to explore the museum.I love the storiea behind every ‘wayang’ there. So many stories to know. Exciting!
Here is another interesting place. Youll find some unique puppet here. Some are scary fro me tho, but it was a really interesting visit.
I heard good thing about this place but I was a bit disappointed with what inside. It was under reconstruction but the displays were not placed in such ways that would intrigued peoples interest.May be the decoration, the interior design, I am not sure which one. But Wayang Museum was the least interesting place that we visited that day. (we visited Museum Indonesia and also Museum Seni Rupa)
Pros: Surprisingly broad variety of wayang (puppetnot just from across Indonesia but also from around the world. Good learning experience for new understanding of Wayang not just to entertain but also as a means to convey values of morality, religion, even as political tool. Great historical building once serve as a church during dutch occupation. IDR 5000 very well spent. Much better than anticipated.Cons/suggestion: more info/explanation of each display in english, lighting set a bit dim for visitors to take good pictures

good place to see the history of wayang.Tips: open mobile phone flash light to see the shadow of wayang.
Ticket - 5000rp per person.(around 2 quarters for us dollars)It’s not a tradition museum but overall it’s a cool place to go!
I think the only one puppet show museum in Indonesia. Located in Kota Tua Jakarta, North Jakarta. Easy to find and access. Cheap price. Many kind of puppet displayed. With good arrangement and lighting, I looks interesting. Also display puppet from around the world. Quite big museum, 2 floor and everything can be accessed by wheelchair with more effort. Also there is a show every specific time.
I didnt have plans to stop into the puppet museum, but I saw it and was intrugued! It was 5000 idr and totally worth it (even if youre just looking to get out of the sun). The puppets, instruments, and masks were all beautiful! There were not too many signs in English, but you dont really need it to admire the art and craftsmanship. The staff was very nice and helpful too! Theres also a cute little gift shop at the end with reasonable prices.
Wayang is a traditional puppet theatre show. Wayang translates to shadow and it tells a dramatic story by moving the shadows of the puppets. This show is famous in Indonesia and also some Asian countries due to the spread of Hinduism. Quite a selection of old and historical Wayang here. I like the old vibe of the building from outside but unfortunately the place is dark and well dusty. We didnt stay that long because inside is also hot during mid-day! It was great to see the Wayangs and how they must preserve this part of the culture!
- Opens at 9 am- Entry fees is 5000 rupiah per person- Its basically a puppet museum where you may find the puppets from across the world..- Handmade puppets of the characters of Indian Ramayana.. Russian dolls, Poland art, British art etc- The museum is on the ground floor and first floor- Toilets are there on the ground floor- Staff people are helpful and supportive- At the end of the museum while you are coming out, there is a shop too to buy the puppets and other soviegners
Loved the tranquil old colonial building amidst the bustle of modern Jakarta. Aside from the puppets the building and some of its memorials also offer a glimpse into Dutch Batavia. The puppets are amazing and many tell stories from the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.I went early in the morning and was the first, and only visitor the entire time. Must see.
The Wayang Museum or Puppet Museum was formerly used as Church, built on the Dutch at 1640 and were called "De Oude Hollandsche Kerk" (The Old Dutch Church). Ali Sadikin, DKI Jakartas Governor at the time, was built at August 13, 1975 as the Puppet Museum. The Puppet Museum Exhibit various styles of Shadow Pupepts such as wayang golek (wooden puppet), wayang kulit (leather puppet), wayang kardus (box puppet), wayang rumput (grass puppet), wayang janur (coconut leaf puppet), wayang beber (beber puppet), topeng (wayang styled mask), dolls and gamelan musical instrument. Apart from the collections, the museum also holds Wayang Shows sometimes with different themes and storylines.
Museum Wayang is one of the three Art Museums in Kota Tua. Its been revitalized and far more comfort to be visited than before. It mainly exhibits wayang golek from West Java and wayang kulit from many parts of area (Cirebon, Purwakarta, Surakarta Bali, even Palembang). Some others are from other countries. Fee entrance is only 5K rupiah for adults and 2K rupiah for children. Wayang show usually plays every Sunday except Des-Feb (off). No additional fee for watching the show. ❤💕
Very educational place to go for learn about Indonesia puppet/wayang history and another dolls from all over the world.
Puppet museum is located in Jakarta Kota. Its an interesting place for those who loves puppets, or those who want to introduce their kids or just want to know many kinds of puppets from many parts of Indonesia and some other countries. It was located in a very old building which was dated from Dutch occupation.
Great place with warm welcome from all of staff, easy to access from every spot in the old city area in west jakarta region,Indonesia, have a lot of the traditional indonesian puppets or wayang and the historical story in there, one of family favorite destination for sure

You also can find gamelan (Java Traditional ensamble), at second floor. Still remember Unyil and friends? You can also find here.I can enjoy this museum better because AC was everywhere, more fun for mu toddler..
Governor General Jan Pieterzoon Coen headstone at the Wayang Museum. The building, now known as the Wayang Museum, at the first it was a church for Dutch at Indonesia. Citing a source the building was restored ini 1736 and called the New Dutch Church. Then in 1937, the building turned into a museum and called the Batavia Oud Museum. After city of Batavia developed into Jakarta, a collection move to the Jakarta History Museum, which is located opppsite the museum before. On intiative Governor Ali Sadikin, the Old Batavia Museum was used as Wayang Museum.
Museum wayang this a part of the Old town Jakarta area. If you visit old town area, you can go to visit this museum of wayang Indonesia. This place clean and have air conditioning. For the ticket entrance for adult its 5.000 IDR single entry (I visit on the week day, Im not sure if the price could be same or not on the weekend)
A great museum, located in Kota Tua, next to Museum Sejarah Jakarta. Located strategically and it is very reachable, only 5-minutes walk from Stasiun Jakarta Kota. The building architecture is old yet artistic. The ticket is super cheap, only IDR 5k, yet it offers various kinds of wayang, puppets and dolls, not just from Indonesia, but other countries as well. Their staffs were friendly and responsive. All of the collections are well-maintained. A good place to visit on weekend!
Located within area of Kota Tua Batavia, Museum Wayang stores a great collection of puppets and dolls from entire Indonesia and all around the world (a local guide told me that the number of collection reaches up to 5.147 puppets). The visuals are exciting, sometimes look eerie especially those that stored in european side.. But i liked it! Also the ticket is very cheap, and the staffs are surprisingly very friendly.
Its a must to come to Wayang Museum when visiting Jakarta Old Town area. There are many kind of wayang (traditional puppetfrom Indonesia and from some country, like france, india, dutch, etc. There is no prohibition to take pictures here. The ticket is so cheap. With wife,April 2018
The museum need to renew and add their collection.... But overall, the place is clean, calm and worth to visit with your family, specially young children. Entrance fee is also cheap so it is affordable for everyone to come and enjoy it.
This museum is quiet unique. It shows many wayang / puppet and dolls from Indonesia & other country such as Vietnam, China, Rusia & others. There are many types of puppets that different upon regions such as Sunda, middle Java,& other regions.Every weekend there were puppet show with different stories that held in Javanese language. It really shows Indonesian heritage conplete with gamelan and "nyinden", even though mostly I dont understand due to language barrier. Many domestic & international tourist comes to this place to enjoy the show. What I dislike about this place is its a bit dusty. However if youre looking for a CHEAP entertainment or wonder where to bring your kids for leasure & education this is the place for you. The contribution fee is only IDR 5.000 or about USD 0.37 per person with special price for group trip and students. And every now and then there are museum staffs who willing to explain the story behibd the dolls or offering to take your picture. #LetsGuide
It was an eerie but awesome experience seeing strange looking dolls inside the museum, and I felt like a kid again. I was also was able to watch a shadow puppet show which conveys Indonesian values, music and culture. It felt like Im time traveling to their local villages where it was played. The ticket is cheap, the staff are friendly and helpful, and I think you can make your own puppet. Theres also a souvenir shop inside, and a clean toilet as well.
This museum has good puppet collection from all over Indonesia, and the rest of the world. The exhibits have good explanatory signs, and theres a live wayang theatre that you can watch for free.
Nice place near Batavia cafe, old quarter.Entrance only 5000 toVisit around 40 min, 2 floorsIf someone come and give you some information about the puppets, after he will wait for some cash...
Interesting to see the puppets from all over the world. We booked a private tour and a visit with the puppet master. The kids got to see what it takes to make puppets, a very complex and difficult process. We had a private puppet show. It was very enjoyable and adapted to us.At the end we purchased some beautiful masks and some puppets. This was a highlight of our trip to Jakarta and I highly recommend it.
Not a big museum compared to some museums in Kota Tua area. It has wide variants of Wayang. You could find some cute dolls to horrifying horror dolls over there. It has quite cool temperature and the design inside is quite good as well. The toilet is also looks great and clean
If you want to know more about wayang, this is the one stop place you must visit when you guys at jakarta. FYI, wayang is indonesian traditional puppets, not only wayang, you can also see other puppets from around the world as well.
