Waipapa Point Lighthouse - Lighthouse in Invercargill, New Zealand
Loved seeing the sealions in their natural habitat
Great spot, sealions there and good carpark , I stayed overnight there in my van over winter, got few paua to! Really awesome place
Another beautifully spiritual place. Well worth a stop.
Great angle of the coast to be. Good views, and habited by large Sea Lions
A great place to go and experience the history of the area the road is sealed all the way there are toilets handy and plenty of parking
Wear a coat even if its warm in the parking lot - it can get very cold and windy at the lighthouse and nearby beach! Id definitely recommend going to the beach though, as its just as pretty as the lighthouse and breathtakingly rugged. When we visited in mid-April around 10 AM, there were no seals or sea lions to be seen. Maybe youll have better luck at a different time of day!Look closely at the sand on the beach if you head down below the lighthouse. Its really pretty, made of tiny polished orange stones.
Stunning scenery, even on a cold, windy, grey day!!
The Waipapa Lighthouse was erected in 1884 to commemorate the sinking of the SS Tararua in 1881.This is one of the last remaining wooden lighthouses and is perched in a picturesque farming landscape.
Its a beautiful little place. I had planed to stop there only for 10-15 mins on my drive to christchurch but we ended up staying for more thar one our. Lots of opportunities to take nice photos and we saw a wild seal 🦭 .
Loved the short walk to the lighthouse . Toilets available at the Carpark. And a good view of the coast. Dog friendly must be on a leash and pick up after him.
This is an historic lighthouse, made of Kauri. Be prepared for extreme winds on some days, but its a lovely drive getting there.
Great viewsAccessible(daughter managed with a broken foot)Toddler managedEven able to barefoot it to the lighthouse which is cool haha.Toilets adequateNice for a family day out
Beautiful scenery, however it is very windy as it sits on the south coast of South Island.
Beautiful place, a few seals and other wildlife to look at too
A short walk to the historic light house and beach Sometimes there are Sea lions on the beach so care needs to be taken
A lovely spot with plenty of wild life the seals like to hang out here a great beach walk you can walk the dog on this beach on leash only ,it nice to be able to take our dog for a walk on this beach
Established gravel trail takes you from the carpark to the lighthouse and back. A few steps from the lighthouse, you can access the coast and (at low tidetide pools along grassy paths. Beautiful site - all outdoors.
Good clean toilets, nice view of the beach and rocks.
Quite ordinary looking lighthouse but a beautiful location. Beautiful beach.
Stopped here to have lunch, lady of the responsible camping team was very nice ! She told me you can park here overnight and gave me a map of the catlins. The lighthouse is nice but I didnt see any seal !I enjoyed this place anyways and I recommend to stop there, maybe you’ll be luckier than me!Ps: toilets are not bad !
Beautiful day with a warm nor west wind blowing. Stunning views easy walking tracks.
A good road leads to the lighthouse, great views and an interesting history. A great place to get some paua at low tide if you are keen. Seals nearby on the beach 😁
One of my favorite places to visit, beautiful lighthouse, seals, bird life... 5 minute walk to lighthouse
Another great lighthouse and stunning views yet again. Massive sea lion just lazing in the long grass about 20m from lighthouse.
Beautiful scenic spot at this South Islands most southerly lighthouse, great ocean vistas, rocks and being nearly high tide the crashing of the waves sending great stays of seawater into the air. Found some neat stones to take home and add to my collection, although I need to look around a bit better from just looking for stones as I nearly walked into a large sleeping bull Furseal which could have been interesting ,I definitely know too keep distance between me and any seal as they move very fast. We had seen a couple of young men try to close in on a young female seal a few days earlier and were very lucky to not have been caught and seriously hurt. This is a must stop spot if passing through.
Its beautiful place and if you are there at the right time you can see some wild life.
I loved the information boards and the tracks leading to the lighthouse and the beach area. Well maintained and the toilets we welcomed.
This is well worth a visit with a fantastic lighthouse very close to the car park, abundant wildlife including sea lions and native birds. The beach South of the lighthouse has very cool stones which I haven’t seen anywhere else before. Prone to extreme weather but very accessible and not worth missing on any trip to the Catlins.
A great location, displaying history. A short walk through marram grass covered sand dunes to the lighthouse and onto the beach.A good chance to see sea lions. Just give them ample space.A large turning circle and parking. Fantastic shelter combined with toilets as well as a disabled toilet.
Beautiful place. Would definitely recommend you to stop here and just enjoy the peace at this spot. You can also take a walk over the beach either going at the right or left side of the lighthouse.
19th century Lighthouse located at one of the southern most points of South Island. Relatively similar distance to Fortrose and Slope Point from this place.Roads are pretty cool if you’re coming from Invercargill via Fortrose , nice view through farms.Surroundings of the lighthouse is picturesque along with Sea lions you may bump into 🤷🏻♂️.Nice place to see Sunset 🌅
Nice place with a new parking lot and some new toilets. Good place to see seelions and a little lighthouse.
Nice view. We saw some seals and got some cool pictures.
Is a very beautiful place to visit, not only because is very calm but also due to its environment. If is possible, you can see very close some sea lions
Worth a look but the sea lions were a bit shy for us. Sitting in the water but wouldnt come out on the beach. Still you can get some nice pics
A lovely spot worth the drive. Youll only need 15 minutes or so, it would be nice to linger but its pretty windy here normally going by the horizontal tree growth. Ok toilets in site, grave yard it along the road a ways with a 15 minute walk from the car park there (not at the light house).
Well signposted and maintained place with easy access walkways. The lighthouse is only a 2 minute walk from the car park. The beach is nice and sandy with some rocky bits under the lighthouse. A perfect spot to stop off at along the beach road.
this is a great place to visit, theres walks, the lighthouse, seals , sea views and more. The road is now sealed, theres toilets, and the place is used at night for photography when view the southern lights.
Beautiful place. Surprisingly quiet. I went in June and did not see any seals.
Beautiful place, change to spot sea lion and penguin.
Situated on the Catlins Coastal road past Fortrose. This well sign posted Southland attraction has easy access on a fully sealed road.On site it has a good car park, toilet, information shelter and accessible tracks down to the Waipapa Lighthouse and beach. From there on a good day sea lions can be observed from a distance (at least 10 metresor you can walk on the golden sands and the unusual flat rocks.Although you are unable to enter the lighthouse it is still a chance for some great photos.A must visit if you are visiting the Catlins, or in the Invercargill/ Southland area.
Really nice walk. At the beginning of the carpark is a toilet and a building with a lot of information about the area. At different points on the walking track is some more information. The walk to the lighthouse is not very long. It is nice to walk down to the beach. Did not see seals, we did see a lot of birds. On the walk back some nice trees who were shaped by the wind.
We saw sea lion & these wicked trees, it was good spot!
Great views. Could spot sea lions if you are lucky.
Beautiful place to have been there once. It is for me the most southern point ever and far from home. Always nice to take a picture here with the South Pole signs and the distance home.
Lovely Scenic Lighthouse, with spectacular all round views. Not to be missed if you are driving in New Zealand.
Lovely place, mainly during the sunset. Sealions are here :).
Very beautiful place with nice view and seals !!!
Lovely spot with lighthouse & great views. Fur seals & sealions on the beach. Interesting history display available to peruse.
We came across 3 sea lions playing on the beach just beside the lighthouse. Careful walking around the grassy dunes near the lighthouse, I noticed sea lions sleep there and you could suprise one.
