Waenhuiskrans Cave - Tourist attraction in Swellendam, South Africa
Did the Arniston cave hike on a cloudy day, great experience at the caves, be prepared with water and good shoes during summer, the splash pool will be great if you dont like the waves. Be prepared for half a day there and back to hotel area.
Great experience exploring this cave
Amazing experience!
Very cool! Can’t remember the last time I went into a cave. It’s surprisingly big with a high ceiling. You need to check the tides and make sure you arrive at the cave just before low tide so that you can spend a decent amount of time inside looking around. There’s a beautiful beach for swimming right near the cave so you can make a day of it. It’s ok for kids as well, accompanied by parents. The cave is about a 600m walk front the parking area, it’s not a tough walk at all. There is a road that leads up closer to the cave but you must be a permit holder to use this road. You would also need a vehicle that is off-road worthy.
Something out of this world! What a sight that allows one to understand the power of the ocean!A cave carved out by the sea with a majestic view
The best expirince 🥰
I just love the scenery
Its a one of a kind experience, be careful when visiting
Beautifull, Amazing, Breathtaking. The small opening just before the entrance some people dont see and then try to enter from the front? Guys, after your rock scrambling and down some steps carved out of the sandstone down the dune and then balancing over the rockpools to try and keep dry, you need to keep to your right hand side, alongside the rocks because the entrance will then be on your right hand side. Through a small hole..a bit of going down almost on your hands and knees will help but will be worth it... spectacular view awaits you. Good luck, you wont be disappointed.
Great place to visit. Only accessible at low tide. Nature at her best.
Excellent spot, accessible only at low tide. Natural life in Rock pools unspoiled.
Fascinating natural sea-cave. Well worth a visit, but time it correctly... the cage is only accessible at low tide.
Breathtakingly beautiful
Breathtaking Beautiful and tranquil
Beautiful, and only a moderate walk to get there, but make sure you go during low tide
Only reachable on low tide. Wear shoes that can (and willget totally wet. Easy walk there but then a few mins of slow walking in the ocean water... Walk to the first seemingly smaller cave...at the back of it is a hole... Walk through the hole to the massive cave. It is really worth it. Bats but dont be afraid... They dont harm anyone and will not fly into you.
Amazing, well worth the effort
Definitely should be on your bucket list
Was a very nice experience!!
Well worth visiting, unique experience !
We enjoyed our quality time here, wasnt too hot (although we came like around 1pm), also were not so many ppl around ! We need to wait a little bit around 1.5hrs to explore the cave as it was still hightide. While we were waiting, we watched some locals divers who were hunting for oysters. We need to walktru the water once its a bit lowtide to get into the cave. Be careful when you do this as the rocks are quite slippery.
AMAZING!!! The entrance is not the big opening of the cave, but this small hole in the rocks that you have to crawl through... Scared me at first but it is just a hole and not a tunnel. And when you go through it, this cave opens up with water gushing in and pebble stones everywhere. Absolutely beautiful!!! So is the hike to the cave... Fairly easy, a bit of loose beach sand to get those calves burning but the views are spectacular. At the "baken" you can see the 2 sea currents from the different oceans colliding!!! A big thumbs up.
The view from inside the cave is stunning... The cave is only accessible during low tide. Comfortable clothes and walking shoes to be worn as its quite a walk, many steps and slightly Rocky path. Easy for kids with lots of energy but need to be supervised due to uneven path and loose rocks. Pics shown are mid tide so couldnt access cave
Breathtakingly beautiful. It is worthwhile to check out the tides beforehand (go as close to low tide as you canand use aqua booties or other shoes you dont mind getting wet. Some parts on the way to the cave are uncomfortable on city-dweller-feet 😀. Inside the cave is just larger rounded rocks you can walk on easily barefoot.
Beautiful place. Unfortunately tide was in and wind wasn’t letting down so couldn’t access the cave
Beautiful wonder of nature, limestone cave, best to check low tide as its advisable to go only in low tide. Easy 2-3km walk that can be done with kids to reach the cave.
Easy to reach, as long as its low tide.
Absolutely stunning and amazing.Need to experience the wonders around Waenhuiskrans
WHEN YOU PLAN TO VISIT THE CAVE.... REMEMBER TO CHECK WHEN IS LOW TIDE. WE TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT IT.
Nice walk, needs more info online as to when it is accessible.Long trip to see it and it was high tide.
Stunning place. We found it very quiet and windy. You need a 4x4 to get to the cave by car.
It was an absolutely fantastic experience to see this cave area. It was a bit difficult getting to the area for me as the water was rising so couldn’t spend sufficient time exploring but it was well worth the effort. Make sure that you are prepared to get your shoes wet navigating to the cave.
Absolutely beautiful cave and adventure to reach it. Be warned that you may have to walk through water and have to climb over some very tricky (and slipperyrocks on the way to the cave. Also do not drive vehicles past the parking lot. Three separate vehicles (including off road vehiclesgot stuck in the extremely soft sand dunes (which are also protectedin the space of an hour. The beach is also very pleasant and would be wonderful for swimming so take your beachwear with for after the cave trek!
Had the best stay at Kassiesbaai cottage. Very hospitable. Most amazing experience to go into the caves. Beautiful adventure.
Lovely place but the Municipality needs to spend money on this great tourist attraction and always make sure you know when it high and low tides so as not to miss out on the caves.
The cave was a bit crowded but a wonderful experience.
Clean enviroment. Peacefull and amazingly beautiful.
Nice find, very nice views and it has an hidden entrance. Around the corner.
Beautiful scenery and a nice walking routes. Beautiful fishing spots
Only in nature do I really see beauty. Area very clean and people kind
Very beautiful area, will visit again
Amazing experience and a definite must see if youre visiting the area. A smaller cave leads into a much bigger spectacular cave. Easy 15 min walk from the car park to top off the stone steps leads down to the caves. Be sure to go during low tide to avoid getting your shoes wet.
Beautiful walk around to view the cave
Very easy walk and a great experience
Beautiful beach and a lovely walk to the cave
My me time comfort zone, and training ground.
Its a beautiful cave and very popular with tourists so its difficult to explore in peace, but most people are friendly and accommodating. You access the cave from the first smaller cave as you cannot walk around it even with the tide low, unless youre dressed with river shoes and dont mind wading through the water. For your own safety though rather access the cave from the smaller one and the entrance is big enough for anyone to walk through, again just have water shoes on as it does help navigate the small rocks.
Fantastic view! And quite an adventure
The most beautiful place on earth!
Incredible cave. Access is through a hole in another cave, only at low tide. I found this a little scary but its not, you step through the hole into this massive cave. Very impressive although its quite a walk to get there and although there is a dirt road we saw three vehicles having to be towed out.
