Voodoo Q - Restaurant in Bristol, United Kingdom
Really tasty food with its own unique take on smoked classics. The squid, pulled pork, macaroni bites and boneless Korean chicken thighs were especially good. 10/10 for service, the owner was really friendly and made us feel like a guest in her home
The nicest staff, super friendly and helpful. The food was amazing, we had the alter, it was so good. Nice wine and atmosphere, we sat outside and it was like being on holiday. Will definitely come back here with friends. Refreshing to have great customer service and a hearty meal. Id say even suitable for vegetarians.
Okay so this place has just been taken over a month ago by new owners. We pre booked and pre ordered all of our food as there was 9 of us and I’m going to give my honest opinion.Food.I ordered the chicken burger with deep fried gherkins on the side. Fries were great!! Generous portion with great seasoning. The burger needed something... not sure what.. maybe something to make it “voodoo q”? It was just a chicken burger and I had to add mayo to make it a bit more moist. The deep fried gherkins personally needed more batter or to be dried out before hand as the thin batter slid off. Some of my family didn’t eat the bottom of the bun of their burgers as it was very soggy and fell apart (probably from the portion of gherkins you get on the side)My parter had the Carolina Pulled Pork and that guy eats ANYTHING that contains meat and he said that it was drowning in hot mustard and couldn’t eat it or taste the pork.Other than that.. amazing portion sizes and quality food!!Service.Oh wow, they need to improve on this. The young chap with ginger hair was an absolute star, always had a smile on his face and was very apologetic that only 2 people were serving and waiting the restaurant. We waited 45 minutes to get the bill... we looked over and the main waitress was eating food and laughing with a table of 2 girls (quite obviously her friends who came inand laughing when it’s coming up to 10pm and we’d been there since 7pm..It’s all a learning curve for these new owners but I’m sure constructive criticism is what they need right now.EDIT: so it now seems like I have food poisoning today, I only had that meal last night for the entire day apart from a banana. Not good. Down a star.
Just been taken over and the food was amazing. Lots of veggie and vegan options for myself and my partner which is really hard to find with BBQ places. Definitely recommend and will be going back.
Amazing BBQ food!! The burnt ends are unbelievably good. Once we had departed we all were highly considering going back to buy more even though we were very full. It has a very American BBQ joint feel and aesthetic i.e the food isnt served on fancy slate plates etc but this doesnt not detract from the food which is the most important thing!
Food is great but service needs improvement. Good vegan options though (dont listen to the review belowas long as ur not bothered about dessert.
Good food, friendly staff, excellent prices.Food took a while but I guess thats part of the course with smokehouses. Still, some updates or a heads-up wouldve been nice.Seems to be a pattern judging by other reviews.Lovely atmosphere inside, though.
Tried voodooq on recommendation from ukbbq group. Not great. Starters arrived 30 after arrival. Main course mix up meant return of my dish to stay warm. Starters of chicken thigh and burnt ends were tasty and moist. However, mains of brisket and beef rib so dry that beef rib dish taken off bill. Aubergine dish too greasy to Finish. Guest cocktails nice however. First and last visit Im afraid.
awful, avoid at all costs, pre-booked our orders as we were a large group but food came out sporadically and told some options booked were now sold out. No napkins on table, no bbq sauces or condiments, staff looked bored and unhelpful, food took over two hours to come out and when it did was overcooked and dry. I could go on.....shocking.
Waited half an hour for someone to bring menus and take our order. Waited two hours for food, with absolutely no update at all from any of the staff. After two hours, we were told our food would be "15 mins". So we left. No idea what the food is like, but the service was awful. The place wasnt busy, so a two hour wait was ridiculous. Additionally, we were told that 3 of the meats on the menu...were out of stock.
Sub par. Friends had been telling me not to bother with the place as they were always out of menu items and the ones that were still on the menu were not that tasty. Sadly they were correct. No burnt ends, no brisket and no ribs. There are far better smokehouses to be found.
A very decent bbq smoke house. Burnt ends are top notch and the ribs and burgers are tasty. The staff we have encountered have always been pleasant and we have sometimes been given complimentary home made tortillas. My partner and I do enjoy the place when we’re in the area and fancy bbq style food but I must say the only downside is there never tends to be much of an atmosphere when we have been in. Perhaps it’s the layout of the place, but that is the only fault I could find. The decor is pretty cool and eye catching.
Had the burn ends to start , they hardly tasted of smoke. Main course was 24hr smoked beef brisket, Carolina pulled pork and beef rib. Beef was dry, pulled pork was so overly seasoned with mustard that you couldnt taste the pork. Beef rib was tough and hard, borderline inedible Ive cooked all of these myself and when you can do better at home, whats the point in paying for poor quality . I wont be back.
Staff are great and this place has a really nice vibe. However I found the burger very dry and it did not compare well to the likes of burger joint etc. The alter meal was underwhelming. Presentation is poor as the food is put on paper that gets soggy in the sauces and then flakes off into your food. Drinks quite expensive. One for meat lovers only!
Was looking for a grill place and stumbled across this place. Menu looked good and hip decor. Service was good, went on a Sunday early evening and it was very quiet there.Ordered fried halloumi, burnt ends, chicken thigh, chicken wings, brisket, pork ribs, beef short ribs and chicken salad.Have to say food was disappointing. All the meats were dry, though the seasoning was good.Halloumi was over cooked and rubbery. Burnt ends were ok, little on the dry side. Chicken thigh little bit dry boarder line moist. Chicken wings dry but seasoned well. Pork ribs a little dry. Beef short ribs does not taste like were slow cooked for 48 hrs as was not tender. Chicken salad, cant really do too wrong.Nice decor and good service, if you like your meats a little on the dry side but and seasoned well, youll like this place. If you looking for most tender meat, then this is not the place for you.
Excellent barbecue/grill food; interesting menu (altered in November 2018including several vegetarian & vegan options. Very friendly, helpful staff. Nice touches such as home-made hot sauces and good local beer selection.
Really great food and friendly staff. Burnt ends were a highlight. Having just got back from a road trip around the southern states of the US this place was just what I needed. The pork ribs here were up there with the ones I had in Memphis and Nashville. The Brisket just melted in my mouth. Portions were massive and I am a fat guy. If you like American barbecue food you will like this place.
A good place for meat lovers. Better than the other smoker restaurant in centre of town. Would like to see more veg on the plate but would recommend, nice staff, relaxed dining.
THIS.PLACE.IS.AMAZING! If you get the chance of Burnt Ends order them! The food here is so tasty. Staff very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Also loved the music and decor. BBQ food at its very best
If you like BBQ food this place is a must. One of the best burgers in Bristol, Ill definitely be coming back.
Wow, if you like real BBQ with Cajun/Haitian/Creole roots then this is the place!Wide selection of bbq goodies; I had ‘the alter’ which was a little bit of everything (pulled pork, burnt ends, ribs, brisket all bbqedand some Cajun fries. All was totally delicious and no issues except for the brisket being a little dry (but the flavour made up for this). We had a complementary starter of cornbread and chili-butter then dived in. I had the calamari rings to start and then the aforementioned ‘Alter’. Our server was a warm relaxed and friendly waitress, perfect for the relax nature of the restaurant.Okay, yes, the decor is a little eclectic but if that affects the way you taste your food then that’s on you.We had visited for lunch on Sunday and it was quiet and the service was fast.Overall I was blown away, the food is great. I would like to know more about the process however.I’m adding this to my list of must do things in Bristol. Also, remember the roots of this food and know that everything has spice in (not hot at all, barely noticeable for me, but I noticed a couple reviews pointing this out as if it’s a bad thing). I personally love this. If you like your spice too, you can ask for their ‘super hot sauce’ and they bring out an unbranded glass bottle of pure scotch bonnet fire 🔥.Price was the upper limit for a relaxed restaurant but I was more than happy to pay due to above standard food.Thank you for your traditional cooking producing the best bbq meats I’ve tasted in Bristol!
Great atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. Food is cooked well and they actually have an excellent smoked brisket! Recommend going here if you want bbq food!
Really good classic american low and slow bbq with a few novel ideas on the menu to make it stand out thier specials burgers while we were there were amazing the figs not pigs burger is worth a try even for non vegetarians. if its a meat fix you want you cant go wrong with the altar an amazing bbq combo. the service was second to none id go as far as the bestbiv had In bristol they were knoledgable of there products and suppliers and were happy to chat but not be too intrusive. If you like bbq or just want to try a good example head over to voodo q
What an awesome experience! We were greeted by a friendly member of staff who seated us quickly. Our waiter couldnt do enough for us and had an excellent knowledge of the menu. The food arrived faster than we expected and was incredible. I had the ribs and my partner had The Alter which is a mixed grill. The portions were big and the prices were spot on. We ordered burnt ends, as a side, and they are the best burnt ends we have ever tasted. Being avid BBQ eaters thats a bold but more than true statement.Stunning decor with a nice chilled atmosphere along with professional, friendly staff. We cant wait to return to try the burgers and dogs on the menu.Well worth a visit. I hope this budding restaurant will be around for years to come.
Amazing service. We had a lovely appitiser for free and most importantly absolutely fantastic food. Its been a long time since Ive been this impressed with a restraunte on G road
The decor sits in a weird limbo: half premier inn, half explosive and colorful paintwork. The drinks menu is a bit on the slim side if you dont want alcohol (fizzy pop and some juice).I ordered the jackfruit burger which was very spicy (nothing mentioned in the menuand the jackfruit was just in large, undercooked chunks rather than being pulled apart and evenly spread through the mixture. My partner got the cheeseburger which was rather bland. The chips were good but the slaw was limp and tasteless.Nice enough waiter and he kindly refunded us our drinks as he had made a mistake on the order.Overall probably not worth staying for a full meal however the bit of BBQ we had was superb (burnt endsso I would think the rest of the BBQ menu would live up to it.
I would like to say a massive thank you to Katie, Georgia and Rod for such a great service! The food was authentic BBQ and was absolutely delicious! We had the Altar which was a selection of smoked meats as wanted to try a bit of everything! All were fantastic! a great choice of food at a really good price! even for myself who’s a celiac it was very welcoming! Looking forward for our friends to come to Bristol to bring them to this place! Can’t wait to see you guys soon...!
Katie recommended this incredible ribs special. It had an incredible BBQ glaze and tasted phenomenal. 5/5.Also, great service with complementary nachos and the homemade fresh dip is superb.
We popped in for an early lunch and had great service, the guy serving was very polite, friendly and knew his menu and drinks. I chose The Altar which is a good plate for carnivores, Chicken, ribs, brisket, fries and slaw! We also sampled the burger and a kids meal... oh and must not forget the burnt ends, they were delicious just like the other dishes! This is a great place to eat and could imagine its a great atmosphere when busy. 5* Well be back for more!
Great BBQ Restaurant!Me and my partner have visited this restaurant a number of times now and were always impressed with the food, service and cost.If you like BBQ food then you will love this place. Its a fantastic place and well worth a visit.
Amazing food. Couldnt finish it though. I cant imagine why anyone would take the challenge burger stack on. Kids loved it too. Best waffles in town.
Was excited for this place. But majorly disappointed. The place was cool looking. Shame food wasnt.4 of us went for some food and we found all four of our meals to be bland and bit tasteless.I was gutted as bbq style food is one of my favourites. I had mixed meat platter thing and found everything bland n litte boring.Service was fine, no need for complaints there. Wish food was better. Maybe a off day for them as their reviews seemed pretty solid. Cant say it was down to being busy as only 4 tables being used at the time.Overall be while before I think about going again.
Excellent food and service! Staff were so good, will be going back again! Cant understand why the place isnt rammed Im sure they will be soon.
Great service, tasty, reasonably priced food. The deep fried soft shell crab and brisket are a must!! Rarely re-visit restaurants but will definitely be going back to this place. The venue has great decor and music, which creates a great atmosphere to.
Takeway via deliveroo, ordered The Altar that is described as loaded with a selection of meats which consisted of 2x ribs, small amounts of other meats with pickles and small salad. The contents fit in to a slightly larger burger box, quality and quantity definitely not worth the price
Took my wife and daughter there last Saturday(12thMay). Fabulous service, amazing music - classic Southern soul and Blues - and simply some of the most wonderful Smoke House/barbecue food I have ever eaten . Special mention to Georgia(apt namewho was so lovely and efficient as our waitress and also the manager - Roger I think his name was - who was friendly and helpful without being obsequious or insincere. Voodoo Q blows other smokehouse restaurants in Bristol out of the water, especially the mediocre overrated Spitfire restaurant down by the docks. Big big thanks to the staff and manager at Voodoo Q will be visiting again very soon.
Tonight me and my family had decided to treat ourselves to a deliveroo take away which we do not do often. We love trying all of the independent restaurants on Gloucester Road but unfortunately, Voodoo Q, has been the worst delivery I have ever encountered. The prices were high but we thought wed give it a go as we love American grub! 13 pounds for a hot dog which had the driest sausage ever drenched with chilli brisket that literally tasted like it came from a tin, also ordered the mumbo jumbo burger which was so bland it was upsetting to think someone actually thought that someone couldnt do better themselves at home, 6 pounds for a mac and cheese that I am CONVINCED came from a packet, also 6 pounds for a cheese cake which literally tasted so rank it must have been gone off, too the bin it all went and what a waste of around 40 pounds! Reading other reviews, it looks like the restaurant really needs to consider what they are doing wether this being the chef or whatever food they are being supplied with. Awful, Bland, Dont go!
Had a really nice meal in Voodoo-Q after work one evening. Really tasty food, very cheerful and accommodating staff. Seems a fairly new place, so was a little quiet but the artwork inside and our is fantastic. I think as more people find out about it, this will be a local hot-spot.
I called up around 6pm to book a table for around 8pm. We were shown to a table quickly and ordered drinks and food quickly too. The vibe of this place is amazing, the artwork on the wall is impressive and the music is ace! The amazing food just tops it all off! The VooDoo Dust on the fries will leave you gobsmacked! Absolutely delicious and all for a great price. The staff are super friendly and chatty too. New favourite place to eat in Bristol 😎
I went to Voodoo Q using a wriggle deal for "The Altar" meal.I really enjoyed it as I was craving smoked meats. For the price on wriggle it was a real bargain, the Altar came with beef brisket, a chicken wing, pulled pork, and ribs (maybe another cut of meat, cant remember). Definitely will go back!
Great eats, brilliant meets. Had a take away box a few times and its always been fantastic and full of flavour. Looking forward to my first sit in meal tomorrow lunch time.
Awesome food. Im a big fan of BBQ and hot sauce. Both are in abundance here. I ate the alter, some burnt ends, some corn bread and some Creole squid. I couldnt pick a favourite, they were all too good. On top of that this place has real hot sauce. Like some places throw terms around like "extra hot" and "spicy" but this place Actually has a Bhut joloka and bourbon sauce that will shoot steam from your ears at the ready.TLDR: great food, eat here. Papa legba would be proud.
Burgers were good both came with double patties. My cheeseburger could have done with a bit more cheese tho. No beers on tap and our Thatchers was warm. We usually go for an extra side or dirty fries when we go out for a burger but they ran out of the pickled jabaneros. Overall the service was friendly and portions were big.
Ordered the Mojo burger, my fries were nice but burger was terrible! Had an odd peppery taste and too rare in the middle. My husband ordered The Alter but the Chef had covered his fries in a spicy coating which made them inedible. Wont be going back ...
Went with a group of 6 people on a Saturday night. Most had meat platters, with one having the Temple veg burger.Better food than some of the larger chains but in a more cosier setting with much faster serviceWill be going back again.
Tried this place on the first day it opened. Serving sizes were large and food was very tasty. Another great independent addition to the street. Probably not that great in terms of choices if you are vegetarian and definitely not if youre vegan
Food took 50mins to arrive. Despite clarifying on ordering the food was not as described. We ordered a side of pit beans and the chilli brisket and it was EXACTLY the same dish with chewy beef added. The burger was served pink in middle and burnt to a crisp on top despite checking it was going to be served well done. When asked about it they apologised and said yes they could bring something else but I’d have to wait a while because of all the other orders - very poor. We asked for condiments that didn’t come until after they took the food away. The salad sides lacked any effort and some were absolutely coated in oregano. Would definitely not recommend. The wait staff were very friendly but didn’t seem to have any power to do anything to help.
Amazing decor, caring and friendly staff, food to die for and a playlist that absolutely rocks! Good value for money. Will most certainly return!
Lovely food, lovely design and wonderful staff. Walked for an hour to get to Atomic Burger only to find it closed, but luckily enough somewhere even better was right next to it. Highly recommend, the burger was lovely and had a lovely chat with the staff member. Wish them all the best
Brilliant food - good selection and portion size. The burnt ends were amazing, how can you go wrong with smokey melt in your mouth beef chunks?Whilst not my main dish, I acquired some Competition Chicken Thighs (boneless, brilliantfrom another in my group, they were great too.The kids menu looked good, there were colouring kits to keep the smaller ones busy. I noticed a few vegetarian, vegan and various gluten free choices too; although all our group had something meaty from the smoker.Have seen the another review says the food was overpriced, I thought the opposite - my main course was a bargain at £10. I suspect their menu will be on the website.Well worth a visit, well certainly be returning, Im sure theres a homemade cheesecake with my name on it.
