Rue de l'Abbaye 55, 1495 Villers-la-Ville, Belgium, Charleroi
Cistercian abbey, abandoned in 1796 & now a preserved ruin hosting an annual choir festival.
Lovely place to spend the day. Walking distance from Villers-la-Ville train station. I recommend hiking in the nearby and avoiding the restaurant. There is a better one nearby
Very nice location, the medieval fair is a definite must see!
Amazing experience. Must visit place
Great place for the music festival Night of the Choirs
I very liked the infrastructure that makes the visit nice (guide on the website available with QR codes, very clean and modern place - except for the ruines lol - and well organised).I can’t understand why no measures were taken to prevent the (4!incidents damaging the ruins. Fair enough, it’s Belgium.Bring a little picnic and eat on the benches!
These beautiful ruins of the abbey is a great place to teach children and adults the basics of the gothic architecture, because all the elements of it are exposed, arched vaults, flying buttresses, naves, gothic windows, etc.
This Abbey was so cool! They have like 4 different gardens, based off of plants for cooking, medicine, etc. They still hold services in the main chapel. Theres so much real estate to explore, and it wasnt insanely crowded.Theres lots of great views and the gift shop has a lot of local products. Its not very accessible for those with limited mobility, unfortunately.
Beautiful ruins of a monastery - well maintained grounds. During the week quiet and serene. Unique and worth a visit . On weekends often events and then can be quite busy
Great abbey complex with a superb relaxing garden. Nice cafe and brewery next door. A very pleasant visit. Highly recommended.
Beautiful gardens.Excellent place to relax with friends on a sunny day
Spectacular is the only way to describe this place. An absolute must see if in the area. Hot chocolate and bitterballen at the coffee shop were delicious too 😋
Free car parking. Only in entrance a small restaurant to have ice cream or drinks. This place nice to take phtography and half a day visit.
Impressive ruins, the gardens need some TLC. Did I mention impressive ruins?
The sité is very nice, beautiful and well maintained. The ruins, gardens and cellars are fun for all ages.Your visit can end with a nice drink at the brewery.
Great experience of the old ruins of the abbey in Villers-la-Ville. The entrance fee of 9 Euros is reasonable as it is a huge complex you can explore on your own or with help of an audioguide (extra fee). I was there in the very morning and for photography fans this place offers exceptionable spots and locations. It is not crowded at all. Additionally, you can learn lots about life in the abbey and its surroundings. Also, there are abbey gardens that teach you about plants and the four humours and temperaments. Parking is free. Worth a visit, or two.
Very nice. Bring your own food and drinks. The bistro is mediocre.
the biggest abbey I have ever seen, in fact the whole valley is one big abbey, even the railway goes throught it, the monks had everything for their lives there, from bedrooms to dining rooms, workshops, warehouses, stables, toilets, gardens, prayer rooms, of course the main church, to the hotel and even the prison, free parking, the entrance fee is excellent, there is also a small shop and restaurant at the reception, toilets available, there are only ruins inside so there is not so much to do but the area is huge and in summer the bloom flowers must be beautifull
nice experience. suitable also with kids of 5-6years old.the info are well written.there is a small info shop inside.
Very impressive ruins. You can easily wonder around for a few hours. Admission fee is cheap as well.
Villers Abbey... Place to be when you love architecture... Villers la Ville... Meditation... Medical gardens🌱... Fruit gardens... Wine gardens.. Monks... Good place to go when your a herborist... Love essential oils... Wines... Medical plants... History 🌹... Fantastic place for opéra... Concerts 😀
A must see for french revolution nostalgic. The place was left destroyed since 1789.An association planted again the Pinot noir grapes which was originally exploited before.
If in area you must pay a a visit! Great energy and very beautiful landscapes. I really enjoyed it!
Ruins of an abbey with nice gardens. Nice place for a trip to spend there half a day. We made it quick - it took us 1,5 hour. The mobile application didnt work for us, but there are also some panels with text if the app doesnt work for you. Entrance fee is 9€ for adults, parking is free.
Lovely gardens, relaxing walks. The kids loved playing in the underground passages. If you want to take advantage of everything, plan to be there for the whole day. A lot to read about everything + extra information online - you just need to scan a QR code. We didnt do it so I cannot comment on this.Bring a picnic or snacks or wait until you finish the visit - theres a restaurant once you get out.Teachers get free entrance.
Although a road passes through and a busy traintrack, the site still brings you back to the medieval times of the monastic world. The ruins majestically still stand and gives you a glimpse of what used to be one of the benedictine more prestigious abbeys.
I really recommend you to visit the placeThe views are incredible and the story about the place is interestingto enter you have to pay 9€ per personIt’s worth it
Very pleasant place, delight for the senses.Personal search for the imperishable in the ruins. To descover the meaning in existence for the future.
Wonderful place to visit, full of history and very well preserved. Nice staff and it is dog friendly
Great place to visit.Everything was perfect. Its huge place to walk in si comfortable shoes will be great.
Very impressive abbey ruines to visit. The history of the place is well explained through information plaques and interesting to learn about. The ruines are expansive and you can easily spend a few hours wandering through them. Definitely worth a visit.
A worthy trip out of the city center. This ruins is well taken care of and it is worth the price of the visit. On the entrance area, youll find a long history carved in steel which leads to the ruins. During our visit, there was some photo exposition around the area. Some areas were on maintenance but the main areas are really amazing with some explanations as to what were the Chambers and rooms were before. Its a must see in the Wallonie region.
This place is amazing it’s a good way to understand the history of Belgium & to be in touch with the history of Belgium. I would surely love to come back when the sun is shining because last time I went there it was raining, it fits the mood and he definitely added something to the excursion. I Who recommend this Abby for anyone that is really interested in history, specifically the Belgian history.
A nice walk around an abbey ruins. Must have a been a grand structure during its time. Parking is limited so be early. Its 9 euro per person to enter. Lots of biking and walking path around the area. You can bring your dog with you. Takes around 3 hours to explore the place depending on your phase.
Very nice exhibition and experience! Take only the tickets 9 euros for the Folon exhibition... :-😉 In the same time you can visit the Abbey... Have a nice journey!!! 😘 😘 😘
very good locationbut hard to find parking placenice walksamazing sitemeet the history itself
This place, I find it just looking some photos here on maps. It’s giving exactly the feeling it should, this a abandoned place for about 200 years and when you’re there between the ruins you can feel that. I was there for about 3 hours, maybe because it was quite morning, not busy at all and the employees there didnt seem to be there, that also contribute to the nice visit, alone between the ruins. I make lots of photos 😉. I dropped here 2.
Its an amazing ruin, with on occasion events taking place. For the children there is a cluedo in different languages. With beautiful weather a must see!
Nice place, but pay 9€ I think is too much considering there is not any kind of explanation, audio-guide, etc.
Impressive ruins covering a surprisingly large area. Nice view up on the ridge at the back of the abbey. €9 per adult, small children free.
We were quite impressed with the 12th century abbey ruins, so well preserved, when we attended the music ensemble night. Overall the lighting effects with the structure and window design, totally took away our breath, even though the train passed by the abbey and made some noise. This environment made the recital quite unique! By the way, it was raining a little bit before the concert starts, so I would like to suggest to always check the forecast and prepare accordingly.
It is the best and most beautiful ruined Ive ever seen. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that I wished you could get a drink without having to leave the abbey.
Those are truly beautiful ruins. They are quite extraordinary and placed in an amazing landscape. There is also a lot of plants used in medicine as well as in the kitchen. You will find a lot of biodiversity as well (frogs, insects, lizards and birds). Convenient for kids and adults ! It costs more than 8 € which may seem quite expensive if you rush. However, if you take the time to enjoy everything, it is worth it.
Gorgeous place! Hidden gem, definitely a place to visit! Also, theres a restaurant close by to have a beer (V or IX).
This beautiful Abbey and grounds is much larger than I realised at first. The 9€ entrance fee seemed a bit steep but I was willing to pay for a lovely day out and about. It ended up being a more than fair price for the 4 hours spent wandering around these beautiful grounds. The information panels and old photos they have up and around are clear and interesting to compare. We had a lovely picnic on the grounds. There is plenty of wildlife around, you can hear the cries of the hunting birds, you can see little birds, dragonflies and hundreds of bees and bugs. Clearly the flowers and plants on the grounds are a treasure trove for the local wildlife. We got super lucky with the weather so it was a good thing we had suncream. There are shaded areas but also a lot of exposed open areas. Keep in mind on both sunny and rainy days!
Absolutely beautiful. 9 euros to get in and its usually quiet because not many people go there.
Wow! The ruins of the Villers abbey are not only a very interesting, it’ also a very peaceful place. As the ruins are in proximity of Brussels, it’s a good opportunity to combine both visits, but you have to plan two days for this trip.
Awesome Abbey that is used in the second season Sense8. Make sure to visit if you are a fan of the series.Theres a small plan but its more fun to go explore on your own. Check every corner, go on all the stairs and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The audio guide is not worth it though.
Pretty big area. Worth to watch it. Enough to see. Surprises can catch you after every corner from the impressive ruin. Would be amazing if it wasnt a ruin. But you get a Pretty good idea how it was.
Awesome place; out of ideas for the weekend? Visit this amazing place. Its fully accessible for dogs and handicap people. You can also enjoy a guided visit with a tablet where it will explain everything about that abbaye.other activities like picnics or photoshoot are possible.
Ruins of XIII century abbey, abandoned some 200 years ago. Entrance through nearby building. Overpriced (8€ entry fee), but free parking for visitors. Not pram-friendly, but a couple of lifts do exist. Beautiful sights and interesting gardens with medicinal plants. We saw a couple shooting wedding pics.
