Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina

One of the most magnificent and best preserved Roman mosaics I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot. Perfectly presented with a very good explanation in English. The mosaics are worth the trip. It’s amazing how well preserved and the detail in these masterpieces is incredible. I was surprised at the size and just how many there are. Room after room of storytelling mosaics. They have designed the walking area up above so that you can look down onto them and really experience their beauty. Great little shopping/food area outside and I did have a great panino.

The archeological site is worth a visit. No recommendation for the audio guide though. Its not well made and you learn more from the information panels on site than from the audio guide.

Deserves 10 stars. Just spectacular. Pro tips - hire a private guide, they work out of a hut on the path up to the ticket both. Its more than worth the 50 euro charge as you will learn so much more about this incredible site. Guided tours are about an hour. Then after your tour eat lunch at the agroturismo restaurant about 300 meters back up the road on the left side. Its quite good and reasonably priced.

Beautiful place to visit with unique and ornate visuals. It is not very stroller or handicapped friendly as there were a few stairways and steps to traverse.

Fabulous mosaics from a Roman villa covered in mud for about 900 years and excavated in 1959. Not to be missed.

Very impressed by this Villa, especially the bikini clad ladies. Who knew they wore bikinis back then! It was much bigger than it looked from the outside and the mosaics were well preserved. Well worth a visit.

Amazing mosaics in their original position in a Roman hunting lodge. Good descriptions of each mosaic in English. Pro tip, get there early, before the tour busses show up and youll have the place to yourself?!

I visited many years ago and had a much better experience then. Today it seemed very crowded with far too many people trying to look at the mosaics. A timed entry system would seem much more user friendly. Also I did not like the feeling of enclosure as the mosaics are viewed from above inside a dark almost tunnel like structure.

No words to describe the fantastic work done in this roman villa, awesome.

Phenomenal Roman villa with mosaics that will take your breath away. Our guide brought all of the villa to life and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Take a guided tour- you wont regret it!

The building complex is huge, and was clearly high status. Almost every room is decorated with wonderful colourful mosaic floors, generally in outstanding condition. There is even some plaster and decoration on some of the walls. It has been well laid out for visitors. The signage, in Italian and English, is informative. The audio guide is good too.A stunning place to visit, and extremely good value.

Beautiful mosaics. Wow. Buried under 40 feet of dirt for centuries and discovered in early 1900s. Still discovering more today.

Its far from any sort of convenience, but they are historic mosaic pieces that you cant see anywhere else.

If you enjoy history then a visit here is a must. It is a little off the major roads but Google maps will get you there with no trouble.You will find a huge carpark and before you enter the villa some shops with drinks and souvenirs. You walk up a steep path to the ticket office. On the way you will pass official guides who if you want more from your visit will show you around. The way round the villa is well marked but for people of limited mobility the steps up and down may seem like a problem.Youre able to walk round on specially constructed walkways which allow you to view the villa and its mosaics in detail. It must have been spectacular in Roman times. At lots of places there are boards to tell you about the room you are viewing.Once you have finished the tour there is a restaurant and gift shop which we didnt visit so cant comment on. Once you return to the car park there are other shops if you need them.

Didnt expect to see such grand space with massive, colorful, almost intact, vivid mosaics, so impressive. It demonstrates clearly ancient Roman life time activities.

A piece of history within reach!Its a bit hard to get to the villa but since you arrive you can read/hear the stories and enjoy great artifacts spread all across the villa.There wasnt any line in the entrance and we didnt have to buy tickets in advance.Notice that the little shops along the way to the villa are VERY EXPENSIVE so if you can buy water and food in advance and bring it with you, do it.We had a lovely time!

Incredible preserved mosaics nearly 2000 years old. The walkway is suspended above the rooms so you can have a clear picture of all the spaces of the villa. There are signs on every room with explanation, also an audioguide is available.The quality and detail level of the mosaic is beyond imagination, must be seen!

This place is simply astonishing!! The status of the mosaics are incredible and the entire site (UNESCOis more than impressive.I also found it well organized and I had no difficulty to found a French guide (audio guide is also available). So, you must do some kilometers to go, but this is a place that cannot be missed!

Lovely mosaics! Its recommend skipping the audio guide. Doesnt add much to the panels. No good food locally, so come with it or have plans to eat somewhere after..

Incredibly well preserved Roman mosaics from a senior noblemans villa. Beautiful and detailed. Didnt find it too busy when we arrived on a midweek visit at 10.30am.

Wonderful pieces of arts from ancient times. This is unique in the world to witness so beautiful ceramic all over the place + the discovery of how used to work such a place in roman Empire days. I strongly recommendPS : free toilet and free parking and there is a restaurant next to the entrance

This place is set for the visitor to be able to enjoy the mosaics without damaging them with walking platforms around the whole place. Beautiful unique mosaics of epic proportions. One of my favorite places visited in Sicily.

Incredible mosaics, displayed very nicely with walkways above them so you can take in the whole scene. Descriptions in english.Tickets are €10/person. Theres both indoor and outdoor mosaics as well as baths to see. One can easily spend 2 hours here. Parking was a 5 minute walk away and was free when I was there. Theres a restaurant and bathrooms just outside. Well worth a visit.Also possible to hire a personal guide for about 1,5 hours for an additional fee (around €25 I think).

This is a remarkable place - no wonder its a UNESCO site. Ive seen lots of Roman villas and I was expecting some foundations and a few mosaics - but this one is much better preserved. And its well presented with elevated walkways that allow you to get good view of the remarkable mosaics.Our tour was made much better by our guide who was able to explain the function of the rooms and interpret the mosaics.

The best Roman mosaics that I have ever seen! The covered, raised boardwalk makes it easy to walk around the huge Villa. The signs explain the mosaics. If you can, arrive at 9 before all the tour buses.

There are amazing mosaics in the rooms of this huge ancient palace. You are able to view them from above by means of a scaffolding type walkway which winds through the structure. There are signs describing the rooms in several languages. Guides are available as well. Restoration continues. Its a great place to see and understand how people lived in ancient times on Sicily.

Wow, my second time after 16 years. Place has been revamped beyond recognition. A must go to visit archological site to understand the capability of artists, builders and mosaic layers of 2000 years ago.

Fantastic mosaics. If possible arrive at opening to avoid tour groups. If visiting other nearby sights in Piazza Armerina buy discount tickets for multiple sights.

Really cool place! Dont think Ive ever seen this much mosaic in one place, crazy that their bits outside where you can walk/lie/sit on it are more than we have in most sites in the UK!! Great signposts too, giving good explanations of what each room was and key parts in the scene.

I liked this place, its really well-maintained and the tour is logically planned. The villa and its mosaics offer a real insight on how Romans lived their lives around 4th century. I do recommend!

A nice experience, informative and well kept place. Its an ancient villa used during the romans. Beautiful mosaic floors with different pictures which represent cultures and what they used to do in those times. The Roman baths were nice to see and what they used to do to keep the water warm, they had advanced technology for those time.

Impressive villa and historical mosaics yet the organisation of the place leaves a lot to be desired. The staff is pushy and not very helpful, not the best experience compared to other points of interest in Sicily. The villa itself is definitely worth seeing though!

The Villa 🏛 Romana del Casale is a large and elaborate Roman villa or palace located about 3 km from the town of Piazza Armerina, Sicily. 🇮🇹 Excavations have revealed one of the richest, largest, and varied collections of Roman mosaics in the world, for which the site has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The villa and artwork contained within date to the early 4th century AD.

A nice place to visit with beautiful old mosaics. Very well preserved, some feel like reading a book when you look at it. Most of the Villa romana del Casale is in the shade, that was nice.Even without tour guide, you can see the whole place and read about the mosaics. It is worth going here! The entrance fee was not too steep.

Incredible place where you can touch the history dating thousands of years ago! The site is organized perfectly and one can get familiar with the historic building step-by-step - from the outside constructions up to the north and south wing of the estate. The place is suitable for family with kids and it is worth driving to the middle of Sicily (almost ;)The people working here are friendly and kind, ready to help and support with guidance! Thumbs up!

I made a midday stop at the Villa Romana del Casale and it turned out to be one of the best stops I have ever made. Like Morgantina only a few miles away, I don’t think this site gets the credit it really deserves (and, like Morgantina, it is admittedly a little off the beaten path. In my mind, the two big takeaways here are the most well-preserved and abundant mosaics and frescoes I have ever seen, and the well-preserved architecture of the buildings. As I recall, the site really owes its preservation to the landslides and floods that have covered it in the past (hopefully they won’t happen again! Besides being beautiful, the frescoes are seemingly everywhere – the walls, the floors – and they all tell a story which provides a lot of insight as to what life must have been like in those times (as I doubt that all Romans lived like they did here. So amazing to see how they engineered infrastructure like heating and plumbing. Helpful informational signs provide more insight along the way – I had the added advantage of being behind a tour group with a very outspoken English-speaking tour guide. The place seems to stay busy enough for its location. Be sure to pack water and your camera. I went in October and the weather was perfect!

Nice place for spending one or two hours. Everywhere is a map so it is easy to orient there. Dont go to the paid toilets on ghe left , there free ones right before entrance - on the right in souvenir/beverages/snack facility.

Such a great historical place! I would say it is “must see” when you visit Sicily. These mosaic floors are really a treasure. They are still in a very good condition and it is a masterpiece from ancient times. You could understand how was the lifestyle so many centuries ago. This villa is surrounded by a nice park and you can relax in the shadow if it is a hot sunny day.

Extensive Roman mosaic in this Roman Villa, the best of all Europe. Some of which is very intricate. Using 50 different kinds and colors of stone from different countries and locals within the vast Roman Empire it is almost intact after the massive mudslide burrying the whole area with 45 feet deep. There are some frescoes on the wall as well.
