Limestone cave with wall paintings & site for harvesting bird nests for a traditional Chinese soup.
Viking Cave in Phangnga
Description
Privilege
We have only seen it from the outside, looks nice but wasn’t as expected
Excellent place to visit in Phuket.
It is in Andaman sea and worth visiting for sea lovers
Phi Phi Leh is a shelter to the "Viking Cave", which is residence of the white-nest swiftlet 🐤(indigenous bird). These birds create their nest from their saliva and are harvested for human consumption. The cave is surrounded by deep blue seawater. Tourists are not allowed to go inside. only view is available from the boat. Even though they don’t allow to snorkel in front of this cave but they can enjoy snorkeling at a distance.Overall exciting experience!
MoreYou can only view from a distance. Nothing much to view ( touch and go)
Generally phi phi island tour is not satisfied after elnido and coron Palawan but if you will do first time it will be ok for you
MoreTemporary closed for a company to renovateBut amazing coral reefs to snorkel around the place
MoreVery nice cave. It is a pitty that it is not possible to enter. If you wear a mask you can swim in the middle of hundreds of fish (the distance between you and fish is about 30 centimeters). I saw almost 40 type of fish.
MoreThis is cave walk from sea shore, bit adventurous place you have to take care of your head and foot as its rocky at bottom of sea cave and top of headBut yes normal flip flop works, take battery or head light so easy to walk inside cave and enjoy the beautiful view at room viewRoom is what covered from all side by mountains, after cave walk you reach to room view its beautiful place
MoreNice place but nothing much to see n enjoy there
Some people surviving in this cave by doing fishing as per information shared by our boat guide.
MoreJust good for photos since you cant really go inside the cave
Dont go at Monsoon season ,very bad wheater (cloudy and too much rain in phi phi island)
MoreOne of the tourist attraction towards Phi Phi island. Cant go inside due to birds nest. Only can view from outside .
MoreThe water is very very nice
The cave is now closed for visitors as they have found something precious in the cave. You can only see from outside now.
MoreYou are not allowed to go inside. All you could do is just watch the area from your boat and take pictures.
Moremost beautiful natural cave on island😍🤩🏝️😘..nature is really awesome guys !..must visit !
MoreGreat place for snorkeling. We found Nemo!
Beautiful setting but entry is not allowed. I would have loved to see the wall paintings.
MoreIt is home to thousands of swift bird nests, which build nests using their saliva. Locals go here to harvest these nests as the saliva of these birds are an excellent source of protein and it is a thriving industry. It is sold at a premium price and is listed as one of the most expensive animal product foods to be consumed by man. These nests cost around $3,000 - $5,000 per kilo! The entrance to this cave is very small and there are few tours which take you inside the cave.
MoreWe were not allowed to land nor enter the place. Not particularly interesting to just see from outside. Our boat just passed by near the cave for a few minute.
MoreVery interesting history. Now used for collecting swallow nest (birds nest soupwhich is not too good. Beautiful anyway
MoreNot allowed to go inside. The speedboat/ boat waits here for a few minutes just to click some pictures.
MorePhi Phi Leh is home to the "Viking Cave", which is home to white-nest swiftlet 🐤(indigenous bird). These birds make their nest from their own saliva and are harvested for human consumption and sells approx. $3,000 per pound or $6,600/kg making it one of the most expensive animal products consumed by humans.
MoreRating for snorkeling:If you are doing one of these day trips short or long to Phi Phi Island and the neighboring Island and you are there for snorkeling, have in mind that u will see no fish, yes they tell you there are 3 snorkeling stops and so, but beware there is no snorkeling in these Islands, apparently all the corals are half dead and there is barely any fish to see. So dont have high expectations so you are not disappointed
MoreThis place is nothing special. We went past on a boat tour and Took a quick photo. Really dont know why its such an attraction?
MoreCool cave looked interesting. You’re not allowed in though.Snorkelling areas around the cave were very choppy waters and hundreds of jellyfish so be aware before you get in.
MoreDon’t really understand why it’s called this 😅 but nice cave and I think they found a boat or something in here at some point. Now they use the cave for picking bird nests. So it’s not allowed to go in for tourist I think.
MoreRumoured to have 1000 year old cave paintings.. that and/or a hunting ground for bird nest soup ingredients.. but no person allowed inside means this is a look-see boat-side only. Take your pic, smile and wave, move onto the next spot for something different.
MoreIm impressed how this cave and the old boat has been maintained very well, but it was okay looking at it. Note that people are not allowed to swim around or enter into the cave!
MoreIt’s cold in Taiwan but warm in Thailand last year. A gorgeous place, magnificent views fir snorkeling and diving. Clear water to see fishes swimming around you. A perfect spot to have any water activities. Wish to come back soon.
MoreNaturally formed cave surrounded by deep blue sea water. Tourists are not allowed to go inside. Only view available from the boat. Even they don’t allow to snorkel in front of this cave. What we saw fuel containers are trashed in here may be using for the boats. Still it’s an amazing place.
MoreA place where local people collect bird nests and sell it off for as high as 3000$. Most boats tours will only show this from a distance as it is not allowed to go inside.
MoreOf course we couldnt go inside. Its national park so we could see it only from outside. Our guide told us that local people are taking care of nests and colecting them. From them there are cooking a very famous local bird best soup.
MoreHmmm not much to say. Visited during phi phi speed boat trip. The cave is closed du to the commercial collection of birds nest. If you are in private boat trip you can stop for snorkeling. When you are in organized trip from phuket you will stop for a 2 minutes to take some photos and go to the next stop.
MoreGreat history here, traders would wait ....it the storms here-- and possibly have their goods stolen by the monkeys, lol. A must see adventure #SMILELAND
MoreYou can see this from phi phi island tour. Theres usually not scheduled stopping, however boatman may stop or slow down on request. At phi phi don you can hire private boat at 800-1000 bats per hour.
MoreAmazing experience, boat ride to this past this place, they dont actually stop at this place but we can see it quite clearly while we pass alongside. The clean water and mesmerising view is a take away from this place.
MoreOur tour guide explained that the viking cave was once open for tourist access - to witness bird nest harvest, enjoy bird nest delicacy. However, such access has caused unwanted distraction to the nature habitat, pollution and damage. Its now closed but there are still local living in the cave. Its very beautiful and were allowed to park our speedboat and snorkel from a distance. Its a beautiful place. The snorkeling experience is great, rich marine life and beautiful live corals.
MoreLook at how blue the water is. For normal tour, the boat only go pass the viking cave. We only took photos from the boat.
MoreTypical "stop" sold by unscrupulous Phi Phi islands tour operators obviously forgetting to tell you that this cave is now privately run and that as the concession owners have a good business harvesting birds best for the namesaked Chinese delicacy soup, you wont be allowed in...Dont really count on seeing those paintings that gave the cave its name...
MoreWent there during the phi phi island tour from krabi ... its a scenic canvas with turquoise water and limestone cliffs surrounding. Though we could not see it from inside, was told precious birds nests are being taken out of this caves and sold on a very high price.
MoreLime stone cave which you can see from outside. Peoples are not allowed to go inside. Boats usually costs heavily but in my opinion its a waste of time and money for visiting a single place.over crowded too because every boat will stop here for snorkelling. Though the water is torquise blue and its a feast of eye for snorkelling
MoreAmazing limestone cliffs, the caves are incredible, definitely a sight to see.
We sailed across it. The cave entrance looked wide. The water was perfect.
Awesome enjoyment, but I recomend you go there little time before season or little after, because everywhere are so much turists.
MoreThis cave is really awesome and stunning, one of the best cave we have seen. Amazing experience. The beauty of this cave is the rock its self.
MoreIt may be a made up attraction nothing much to see, just some caves. Its probably a tourist made up visit point by the local day trip organisers. They say there are bird nest in the caves but tourist cant visit because these caves been bought by Chinese companies who makes money by selling bird nests!
MoreBeautiful, crystal clear deep blue sea!! I had a nice swim with the fish 😂😂😂😂
