Small place but excellent food. We had the chow jew ho fen, but you can customize it with egg noodles or mixed. We also ordered "dry" which has the soup on the side. The noodle is tasty even without the soup. The soup itself is great too.

This is just one of those places that people know about all across the state, but feels like the spot across the street. We used to live two blocks away. Been there before, during, and after. Can something be delicate and full of taste at the same time? Their broth will satisfy anyones palate, even those that dont like soup!Ask for the garlic on the side. And if you like kidney, or never had it, you have to give it a try. Its not for everyone, but itll have you hooked if it is.

This place is for when you have no regards professional service and cleanliness. When you sit down, don’t look on the ground and don’t try to peek into their kitchen. Food is better on the week days than weekends I think is because the kitchen is not as busy and you actually get better quality food. Had their ho fun noodle soup, chow mein, wonton noodles. Definitely more meat and toppings than other places. Downside is they charge extra for “every thing”.

Came across this place when I was looking for places that does the dry style of Hu tieu (Hu Tieu Kho). Unlike the traditional Vietnamese/Cambodian style Hu Tieu, this place offers to Teo Chow version which is very similar.I grew up eating more egg noodles than rice noodles so I decided to #12 Mi Trieu Chau with soup on the side. I also ordered their sautéed kidney with ginger onion.Their sautéed kidney was very flavorful and the kidney was perfectly cooked! Kidney is one of those things that are very hard to clean and cook properly and this place does it very well.#12 with soup on the side brings me back to childhood. The noodles were the perfect texture with the right amount of oiliness that nothing sticks together. It was basically crack to me. The amount of noodles and toppings they give is very generous. I felt like I needed to be rolled out of the restaurant. After discovering these place, my husband and I have gone back 3 more times in the span of 2 weeks. I highly recommend this place!Pro-tip: they open pretty early, so try to go closer to opening time or relatively early as it gets busy and could have a wait closer to the usual brunch time.

The Chow Jew Ho Fun might be my favorite meal in Oakland. The broth and noodles are perfect, and the hot sauces are too good to be believed! Im pretty sure they make their fishballs in-house as well. So good!!

Cash only. Make sure to hit the ATM. We come through regularly for #21 with soup on the side. Make sure you set up your sauces for a fulfilling experience. If youre feeling extra hungry, get some fish cakes!

Food still good, but they let other people cut in front of you sometimes and still ask if you were in line first, even though they already let other people in first that got there after you.

This place came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. We tried the Chow Jew noodle and seafood noodle (chose hor fun for both). The noodles had a nice chew and the broth came separately and is clean yet flavorful. The staff were very nice too. There’s a sauce station where you can get your own mix of condiments including homemade chiuchow chili oil! There is a huge bottle of hand sanitizer there and the staff ask you to clean your hands before handling the sauces. Will definitely be back!

They have wonderful fish cakes and great pho. I slways get the same pho because it’s the tastiest anywhere. I get the shrimp ho fun. It’s made with shrimp and seafood broth. At most other places I’ve tried it’s made with chicken broth - not the same taste at all. My spouse usually gets the beef stew ho fun. Hi fun are wide rice noodles and they are delicious.

Best as far as I am concerned, I enjoy the Beef Satay soup and the Seafood Ho Fun soup is also very good. I have been coming here for over 30 years without disappointment. The prices have gone up but it is guaranteed satisfaction so it is an easy choice to make.

Classic Oakland Chinatown fare. I love it just as much now as I did 10 years ago. Chow Jew with thick egg noodle is my jam, sides of fried kidney and fish cake... Amazing stuff.Something about their bottled chili sauce just brings it all together.

No frills, its faster if youre willing to share a table for small parties. I get rare beef with thick egg noodles and beef stew broth. My girl gets the chiu jow mein ho fun (I think lol).IMHO their wavy/thick egg noodle is what I consider the standard of excellence that I judge other restaurants against. Ymmv but its simple good food and hearty. Also I get the soda lemon to drink 😍

The service is good but the food is so so. My friends order (soup noodle didnt cook well and they had no problem to give him a new one.My order is Beef satay soup noodle and New Chung Kee (Milpitasis better and cheaper.Beef satay soup noodle is only available at "Chao Zhou (潮州)+ Vietnamese" style restaurants so I use it to judge the food quality. To be fair, the fish cake is OK. My friends orders look OK but nothing impressive.BTW its hard to find parking at Oakland Chinatown so if you live far away then dont bother.

The fried noodles are delicious. The sauce was not overly salty and it had just the right amount of beef and vegetables. My only gripe tho was the plate was too small. I could not mix it properly and had some spill on the table.

This is an Overseas Chinese restaurant. You are more likely find their foods in Southeast Asia than in Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Mainland China.Their stirred fry pork kidney is superb, so are their pan fried fish cake. All their noodle soups are excellent. I particularly like their beef sate noodle soup. And you can get superb Vietnamese coffee here too. The owner and many staff are from Vietnam.

Although I have had their food many times before, this is the first time I have ate at the location. It is so much better than take out. Its a hole in the wall, its cash only, and can sometimes have a line...but definitely worth it!

One of the best classic Cantonese restaurants in the States. The noodles are some of the finest in California! In my opinion, one can just blindly order from its menu and have a great meal. The place is nowhere near upscale. The service is quite basic, but gets ones needs addressed. The tea is bland and cheap. Dinnerware is equally cheap and unflattering. But who cares, the food is some of the finest.Dont miss this place if you want fine classic Cantonese noodles.

Great place for a bowl of noodles. Not to mistaken for Pho. Its #21 on the menu. The bowl comes with Ho Fun noodles (large rice noodles - you can ask for thin rice noodles or even sub for yellow egg noodles.), shrimp, pork, chicken, meatballs, fishballs, ground pork & pork kidneys. I have seen people complaining about the wooden chopsticks. Stop complaining and ask for to-go chopsticks or even a fork. We all know the ones complaining are probably folks who probably dont even know how to use chopsticks properly. All in all, please do drop by if youre in the area. Enjoy!

Theres never been anything wrong with this place in the last 20 years Ive been going. It has always been one of the best noodle soup places Ive been to and will always go to. I always get the chew jou vermicelli noodle soup with a fried fish cake appetizer. The quality of both dishes had never changed and thats amazing.

We have these where you want to go to lunch conversations at work all the time. The conversation gets old because we always go to the same place. Well, not today! My friend loves this place, but unless you get there early for lunch, theres going to be a wait for a table. He said our other co-workers wont go here because its too crowded and they dont like waiting. This place is super loud as people chatter between bites of noodle soup. This is what everyone comes here for. #21 on the menu, the many different kinds of mix meats. I love the flat egg noodles, they cook them just right, chewy without being overcooked. Also there house chili oil is fantastic, not to spicy (my heat register is pretty high so sample a small bit to decide for yourself). This is the Chinese Chouchou comfort food I grew up with, maybe this is why I rather have noodles than rice. Ill be coming back more often with winter coming soon.

I came down to vien huong during lunch time. The server asked me if it was okay to sit with other people and I said that was fine. After waiting for 8 ish min without any service and seeing other people who were seated after me get served I decided to walk out. The food is good but the service is something else. As someone who doesnt call attention to themselves the experience was terrible and the workers should be more attentive esp since it was communal style. They should remember the people they seated etc.

I remember coming here as a kid. My go to dish is the chow jew ho fun, soup on the side. I like to top the noodles with hot oil, hoisin and pickled peppers. That soup on the side just cleanses everything. The only thing I dont like is I always run into someone I know. Not a bad thing but damnit let me eat my noodles.

Great authentic Cambodian and Vietnamese food. Restaurant is overall clean, service is wonderful. Kid friendly, lots of seating, but regularly full, you have a small wait for a table. Which means its good. Restrooms are kept clean and stocked. Handicap accessible. Street parking is limited. During Monday-Saturday metered parking.

This is a great place to get Pho. I was really impressed with the food. It came out really fast. The service was a different story. He wasnt a bad waiter he just constantly pressured us for a tip. It was unprofessional and uncomfortable. Especially, because I tip generously to begin with.

2nd time at Vien Huong and another lovely experience. The three of us came for a late lunch on Saturday. Place was quite full but we easily found a table and sat down.Staff is friendly and place is casual. Bathrooms are really clean which is always nice. Cash only so come prepared ;)Between the three of us we shared:- steak bell pepper from house specials $13.5- shrimp chow mein from the noodle menu $12- riceWe werent super hungry so this was quite enough for us three. We polished the plates! Food was really good and super light, not your typical greasy chinese I guess because it has more Vietnamese influence. We all loved the steak with bell peppers and not that impressed with the noodles. Would love to come back to try out their soups - yea we still havent tried them boohoo!

Yummy noodle soup. This is one if the oldest establishments in Oakland Chinatown. It is like a smooth machine. They get u in, give u a menu along with some hot tea or cold water. As soon as u order your food, within a couple of minutes, your food is in front of u. U eat, u pay...Next customer... Love the food here..
