Visitors & locals alike toast Kerouac et al. amid Beat-era memorabilia at this North Beach icon.
Since we sat at a booth we didnt get served very fast but the server was very nice but we didnt get our check until very late and then they rushed us to pay other than that the Ambiance is great and thats about it. I think that Vesuvios is known for what they used to be so they are still that type of bar but you have to sit at the bar in order to be served like that
Great watering hole, had some STIFF drinks and quick service!. Make the stop, its worth the breather and a drink.
great friendly little bar tucked away on the edge of China Town and North Beach. It was open early on a Friday morning and provided a respite from the busyness of tourists for bohemian travelers. No wonder the likes of Jack Kerouac, Laurance Ferlinghetti, Daryl Hannah and other artists hung out there.
Amazing vibe, The bar needed more staff for sure, it was painful to watch the 2 men that overworked but still, great drinks, one of the best around the area
Low key bar with good drinks, unassuming people, and unique decor.
Best bar in SF. Great ambiance, not a pickup scene, just good drinks and good vibe.
Great historic bar with very funky vibe. The tap selection is OK but not the draw.
Historic bar with all the class that one expects from Kerouac and the Beat poets. A must see site on your visit to SF.
My favorite San Francisco bar. Historic and so filled with soul!
Hippest and most historic dive in North Beach. Bing your Kerouac, grab a pint, sit upstairs, observe... enjoy the vibes.
The old school atmosphere of this bar is incredible. Grabbing a drink at Vesuvio Cafe is like taking a time machine back to San Francisco just after World War II.Pro tip: Order a drink and then head upstairs to sit at one of the tables by a window for excellent people watching
I absolutely loved the place and atmosphere. Great customer service. You must visit.
Old style pub with lots of memories. Neat building. Staff very friendly.
Stopped in for a drink on a Saturday afternoon. Great staff and quick service. Love the decor and vibe this place has.
Like stepping back into history. Drink and sit in poets corner. Pretend you are Jack Kerouac and sit with a friend philosophizing about the days zeitgeist
This is one of the best SF bars. It’s a bar people so just booze. No food just peanuts (literally). You can bring your own food. It’s an ancient bar with all kinda old architecture all over the place. I don’t think they take reservations. Their drinks are amazing, great cocktails and nice amount of booze inside every drink. Their price is pretty reasonable. This gotta be one of the best Bar in the town.
Such a beautiful vibe! Really feels like your neighborhood bar where youre a regular. Amazing abience! Drinks are also really good.Must check out
Good atmosphere, very friendly employees. We only had a beer but we loved the bar and the looks. Definitely nice to visit!
Great vibe! We sat downstairs and upstairs and enjoyed both experiences!! I’ll definitely be back.
My favorite bar in SF by far! Fabulous atmosphere, terrific beers on tap, friendly staff and great view of the hustle & bustle of Broadway & Columbus from the upper floor.
One of my favorite historic hangouts - 2nd floor near the Kearny St window. Thank you Janet Clyde and free!
What a trip to visit this fabulous throw-back bar that has lasted through thick and thin! Loved it!
Great little spot, especially if youd like to have a drink where some American Icons have sat and drank. Staff was very friendly, drinks were fairly priced, and seating was available even though this is an incredibly historical and well known spot.
Three of us stopped by, on a whim, while on vacation. We had the pleasure of being served by the owner. She and her staff were so welcoming and engaging. It feels like a neighborhood pub where you can hang out all day. Definitely make a point to check this place out. You wont regret it!
One of my favorite spots in SF!
An SF institution and essential piece of the city’s history. One of the last remaining old world drinking establishments that give you the feel of vintage San Francisco during the beatnik era. I truly hope their doors never permanently shut.
My wife and I stumbled upon this place while exploring the city and it became the highlight of our entire trip. We immediately felt at home and the welcoming friendly staff was one of the biggest reasons for that. The drinks were great and the conversations even better. We can’t wait to come back to the city just to have some drinks here again.
Has an aged local bar vibe. The cocktails had kind of heavy pours but we were in the mood for that.
One of San Francisco’s oldest beatnik bars, where Kerouac himself hung out and wrote. When you walk in, you instantly feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Grab a seat at the bar and soak in the photographs and aged patina, or go upstairs for a cozier setting and bird’s eye view of one of SF’s most eclectic bars. Love this place and always stop by when I visit.
A bar sporting a lot of character and view up stairs.
Loved this small, old bar. Lots of history present that you can feel in the wood itself. Variety of cocktails and taps with plenty to look at inside and views from the second floor. Definitely a unique experience and will be back for more Manhattans.
Vibrant fun bar. Good cocktail and beer selection. All the kitschy art work is fun to look at.
Really terrific ambiance. Real good beer and cocktail selection. Good music every time Ive been here. Right beside "City Lights"...come on.This light fixture has been here since 1907, and its one of the only remaining gas fixtures. Found out tonight that this place just recently celebrated 70 years in business.
Loved the place. Not a fan of the wine here but beers are good... service has been getting worse... considering its remarkable presence for the beat culture ok you earned some extra stars
This is a historic, local favorite pub in San Francisco, California! Gather with friends at Vesuvio Cafe! If youre from out of town, come experience a welcome like no other. Fast Customer Service every single time!
The legendary Vesuvio Cafe opened in 1948, and have over time been frequented by cultural icons such as beat poets like Allen Ginsberg and novelist Jack Kerouac, poermt and founder of City Lights Bookstore across the street, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and poet/singer Bob Dylan. The decor is beautiful, with a hint of Art Noveau, and the bar has tons of atmosphere.
Nice cozy place with reasonable prices for the area. The music is good but it skips which can get frustrating. Upstairs is fun but try not to sit under a speaker ( which are low on the ceilingif you want to have a conversation.
Irish coffees were delish and if you go during the daytime theres plenty of seating. Nice views from the upper balcony.
Offering quick mixed drink bar more than careful cocktails in my opinion, but I like the atmosphere and the wait attentiveness. Fun vibe overall and was a good end to our travels whilst meeting our friends.
Very unique place! Not exactly a place where I would write a book! Anyhow having great drinks everything is posible!
Very kitschy place with lots going on, there was a book club meeting the night we were there. Very arty with a young crowd. Not the friendliest of places, guy behind the bar quite abrupt, but I guess theyre quite busy. No wifi but not a negative just letting you know. Top balcony is a good place to sit and people watch, overlooks some great street art.
Classic bohemian bar with enough literary and jazz references thrown into the decor to make your head spin—even more so after an excellently stiff cocktail mixed by one of the non-pretentious bartenders. Underline “lack of pretentiousness;” it’s not uncommon for a sports game to be on the television despite the hip clientele. Overall Vesuvio’s promotes and attracts the best kind of people: smart without taking themselves too seriously. You’ll get much more than a decent drink here.
This is a little corner pub with history and culture. Drinks are very reasonably priced. Sitting upstairs will give you a good view from the windows and you can spend an afternoon there just people watching.
It may have become a tourist stop at times, but the drinks are good, the bartenders are ace and the vibe is chill. Hands down one of my favourite places to drink and talk with friends in SF. Get a seat upstairs by a window, you wont be disappointed.
Omg possibly the cutest bar Ive been to in a little while. Bartender was super helpful and she even ran the drinks up to us on the mezzanine level. Also helped that they had Olympic Figure skating on when we arrived hahaha. Would 100% go back again.
A classic San Francisco watering hole with a history of beatniks, poetry and the birth of the hippie and counter-culture movement of the 60s permeating its walls. One of the best bars to grab a drink with a friend and ponder life or people-watch. Jack Kerouac Alley outside is also a great place for a photo op.
Good place for quick drinks. Not a high end bar. They have maintained antique look to give cozy feel. Gas Chandler looks awesome.
Fabulous atmosphere and range of cocktails. You can feel the history in this place. Table service and excellent and friendly staff.
Not pretentious. Nice cocktail list. Wine list that wont break the bank. Great place for a cozy drink.
Cool retro decor at a historic bar, interesting drink list and chilled atmosphere.
