Victory House, 99-101 Regent St, Mayfair, London W1B 4RS, Mali
High-end dining and luxurious Maharajah-inspired decor at London's oldest Indian restaurant.
This is my favorite restaurant in the world. Ive been coming to Veeraswamy for almost 20 years. I specifically come from California just to eat here. The food is incredible, the staff are friendly and professional and the atmosphere is lively. You will love your dining experience!
Hands down the best meal we had in London. We did the tasting menu and were impressed by the quality of the food and the attentiveness of the servers. Cant find a reason to fault any part of the service or food.
Best Indian food ever - including India. Delicious starters with beetroot croquettes and spinach followed by fantastic main courses - special attention to the pineapple curry side! and an excellent ganache and sorbet for dessert. Only the espresso was not perfect - should have gone for the chai. Great atmosphere, excellent location.
Deducting the 2 stars for drinking water charge which is free in whole UK.Overall it was a fine dining but the wierd part is I asked for water and the waiters kept on coming and filling up my glass with water which i earlier thought was a nice service just to know later that they added a drinking water charge on my bill. I have been to many restaurants and pubs in UK and none of them have ever charged us for drinkable water until its a mineral water bottle we buy. They bought their own glass serving bottle normal water and charged us for this which was not at all expected in such a big fine dining restaurant. Nor do they mention in their menu that water is chargeable.OtherwiseThe ambience and food was good. The snacks were very tasty and the main meal was okay. There were not many options in the main meal menu. The service was also good and on time for which we paid service charge as well. Definitely overpriced but acceptable due to fine dining but the drinking water charge scam is not at all justified. For clarification, the waiters kept on coming and filling my glass with water which i did not ask for just for the purpose to finish the water and then themselves took the bottle with them and when my guests came they asked for water and bought another bottle by themselves as obviously if any person comes and you ask they say yes for water. Also they did not give any option of tap water, they just asked still or sparkling, it wont hurt to say tap water as an option too nor would it hurt to mention it in menu.Wont complain on the price as it is fine dining. So justified and quality of food was good no doubt.
What makes this restaurant so special isnt just that they elevate Indian cuisine to spectacular levels (and, wow, they do!its also the warmth of the staff every time. Highly recommended for a special occasion, and I keep going back!
Veeraswamy is amazing. Do yourself a favor and dine here if you can. The food is outstanding with flair added to traditional comfort dishes. The service is attentive without being intrusive. The hosts truly care about the guest experience. I recommend reservations if you are thinking about dinner or the weekend lunch. And please, dont forget about dessert!
Great venue, great service, great food.Just off a busy Regent Street, first floor location with a lift service. Spacious surroundings, attentive service
We had a wonderful evening here. The food was beautifully cooked, delicious and well presented. The service was attentive without being overbearing or fussy. I highly recommend booking and enjoying a meal at the Veeraswamy.
Simply, one of the best Indian restaurants in the UK. Well deserved Michelin star. Food was amazing and very authentic. I will be back again very soon! I was VERY impressed when we visited yesterday.
The mains were excellent, crab biryani, lamb shank and prawn curries were all some of the best Indian food I’ve had in London. The evening however was let down by:- ridiculously overpriced drinks- insanely expensive starters, pushing £20 for two servings each starter, some of which are just paneer tikka, is laughable- tiny samosas that could’ve been straight out the freezer aisle at Tesco- chaotic service and loud atmosphere, not what I would expect from a Michelin star establishmentOverall I don’t think I’ll be returning, I’d sooner go to Gymkhana or Jamavar
I don’t know what is the hype about this restaurant, definitely not on our list anymore. The food was average and very rich. We ordered crab biriyani, rotis , the curries crescent which had 4 options , the green prawns and Samosa. Not one item was simple it was all so rich and sweet. I understand making the food for the western audience but we regretted our visit . My husband had a very upset tummy after we left the restaurant and it was a mayhem night . The prawn had raw green masala , unfortunately for me I cook and love food and this was such a disappointment. Greasy and loaded with sweet and cream. The service was amazing, attention to detail was great. Beautiful ambience. Location is excellent too. One of my friends told me that this place has become more westernized and I understood what they meant after my visit.
Id never been here so thought it was about time. Not the best Ive had but very good and we both enjoyed it. Lovely restaurant with attentive staffso a nice overall experience.
If you are looking for an honest take on dinning at this establishment read below. Otherwise you might be able to convince yourself and be satisfied with the average ratings than this is not for you stop reading and leave.Let’s start with what we all care about the food. We ordered chicken makhni, chicken biryani, naan, tikkas and kachori. The Makhni was watered down, both in consistency and taste as if it was made for the masses who know not what authentic tastes like. The biryani while presented well, the looks were the only thing going for it. It had no action, or taste, no reason to remember it, or even mention that we ate biryani here. But what astonishes me was that this dish was still better than the makhni. The chicken tikkas were also bland but edible at least unlike the other two dishes. However it felt the two portions ordered even when served together felt as if they were curated art pieces for children. I don’t mean small I mean tiny.If your looking for papar that’s the best way I can describe the naan here. The chili naan has no chili, the garlic naan was the saving grace of the name alone, it’s still a misnomer as taste meant nothing here.Overall this establishment was a 2.5/10The 2.5 points go to the presentation of the establishment itself. If you are looking for bland, watered down non authentic food that seems to charge you by the weight in grams gladly visit this place. If you understand that hype is hype, and not worth your time nor money or the savage butchery of your pallet I bid you avoid this place like the plague. To the reply: Reservation was done under the name nomi and yes I wrote this review sitting in your establishment and posted an image as well. So it’s easy to call it unverified vs fix the issues at hand.
I first went to Veeraswamy in 1982 then again in 2005 and still remember it. Do when I read that they have 1 Michelin star, I had to go again. I reserved and went there with my brother. We ordered Raj Kachori and chicken Tikka for starters, then Roast Duck Vindaloo, Lamb Rogan Josh and dal with steamed rice and ended with cucumber Raita. OK, let me start, the Kachori was unreal, the mixture of flavors blended so well that it left my mouth screaming for more, the mixture of ingredients was so nicely balanced and flavorful that I had to meter myself not to finish my portion. The Tikka was also very tender and nicely spicy but not too much, however, it had something missing from it and not until I had the duck Vindaloo did I realize that the spice mixture was very very unique. The duck was another story. Vindaloo is my favorite Indian dish which I love the taste and the heat. The duck had some heat but had an amazingly correct Vindaloo flavor, this to me was delicious, the duck was cooked beautifully, soft and well rendered fat and just lovely but with the Vindaloo spices which made it a unique dish... Loved it. The lamb was also amazing and like the duck was spiced to perfection but in a different way than any other Indian restaurant while maintaining the identity of this Kashmiri dish. The dal was excellent and the rice and Raita sublime. The rice was the perfect vehicle to carry the Vindaloo and Rogan Josh flavors. We were full and could not order dessert unfortunately but what a feast of flavors. Now you have to understand that I love Indian food but always suffer the aftermath of sweating the spices. Veeraswamy is different, the food I had, had all the right flavors and spice but not of the aftermath, so I was delighted. What an amazing place, I remember it from 1982, 2005 and now since I visited London in 2022, it has grown and developed into an experience I will repeat anytime I come to London hopefully not to far distant as before. Go there and enjoy.. Well deserving its Michelin star...
The food was amazing and very fairly priced. There were many great options for vegetarians, omnivores, and pescatarians. The drinks were delicious. My husband and I loved the service and the relaxed environment. I really recommend the pineapple curry - I’ve dreamt about it!
This is one of my favourite Indian restaurants in London; I defined like almost everything about this place. The food is absolutely delicious and very well presented (perfect to Instagram and Co). I went there a few days ago with a couple of friends to celebrate, and we had so much fun. The ambiance was just fantastic. The only thing that could be improved is the good portion.
We had the tasting menu with wine carefully chosen for each course. The food was carefully cooked, each course bringing new and interesting flavours. The starter was a Green prawn which was delicate and fresh. Followed by chicken which was soft and spicy... leaving a tingle on your tongue. The main was presented on a crescent and contained 4 different curries, served with naan and the most delectable lemon rice. The most surprising dish was a pineapple curry, it was fresh and fragrant the pineapple was cooked but not squashy and had a discrete coconut flavour. It was delicious and for me the highlight of the meal! The staff were knowledgeable sharing information on each dish and so attentive! If you think you have tried Indian food before I would recommend a trip here to blow your mind!
Very pricey for a mediocre experience not much of a selection of dishes on the menu .requested water for the table which was warm however staff were friendly.. Im from hounslow where the food is equally as good if not better for the fraction of the cost
Very good Indian restaurant in the heart of London. Also the oldest indian restaurant in London. Almost 95-96 years ago, set up by Edward Palmer.Beautiful ambience. Courteous and ready to assist staff. Lovely food. Nice and clean floors.I loved it. Highly recommended.
Amazing !A true gem in central London .From food to Deco you will not be disappointed!David and his team were amazing !Thank you for such an amazing experience!
Weve been in the past, but on the occasion the food wasnt good. I found the lamb strip starter way to overpowering full of garam masala, the puri was full of green and side potatos way too much garam masala. You could not really enjoy the flavours. The breast malai main was tasteless, when you bite into the chicken you notice the hard mustard stone. The food was presented on a leaf, nothing special.Waitrer was friendly and very attentive.I would not be returning again.Very disappointed with the food. After reading now that it is a mitchlin star, I am even more disappointed. The menu needs to be rewritten and change of chef.
Had a lovely weekend lunch with my boyfriend to celebrate his birthday. Delicious food. Fantastic service. We will definitely be coming back again.
The food here is quite good barring the butter chicken which was very sweet and isnt authentic Indian. We had a good dinner and enjoyed the food overall .However a bit annoyed due to constantly being pushed to order and had our conversations constantly interrupted. Another let down was the dirty cutlery which was given not just once but twice .Manager did come to speak to us about why we refused to pay the Discretionary service tax and we explained.
Splended service and delicious food. Tried the tasting menu and it was just delicious. Loved the cocktails.
Honestly a bit underwhelming…the service is excellent, the ambiance is great, but the food is average for a Michelin star restaurant and the oldest Indian restaurant in UK. I had the tasting menu and each dish was good, but nothing mind blowing for the price they charge.
Generally very good and a nice birthday / anniversary treat. Some delicious flavours, with the lamb rogan josh and green king prawn among the stand-outs. Naan breads were a little cold and dry, waiting time between tasting menu courses was quite long. The staff were all very nice, however.
A disappointing experience considering this is Londons oldest Indian restaurant and has a Michelin star. Appetizer was good but my entree was not only boring but had no flavor, some of the dishes had no spices while one of the curries was overwhelmed by chilli pepper. As for service, another disappointment, no attention to fill the water for many minutes. Here Im sweating because one of the dishes was way too spicy and there is no water while the servers where hanging around chit chatting among themselves
The food was nice. The service was good. But considering 1it has a Michelin star and 2how very over priced it is, I would expect something special. There are so many curry houses in London with good service and authentic delicious food for a fair price. Here you get a tasty curry but at 3x the cost, not to mention a 330cl German beer being over £8.
Food is 4/5 (on tastebut ambience and presentation is 5/5. If youre celebrating, its a place to book. Also its apparently one of the oldest Indian restaurants in London serving since 1926. Drinks are not bad either and much more reasonably priced than some of the other bars in the area. Overall good value for money for a fancy dinner (or lunch!).
One of the best Indian restaurants I’ve tried (so farand definitely one of the best (one starMichelin rated restaurants I’ve ventured into.Quality of ingredients: 5/5 from the cocktail garnishing to chicken breast cuts;Flavour: 5/5, everyone mouthful is a delight of Indian creativity;Ambience: 5/5 very serene with a blend of British-Indian decor, and a lovely breeze on a warm summer day;Drinks: 5/5 - far better than any cocktail bar I’ve been to;Price 5/5: let’s face it - this is a Michelin star restaurant and they could be charging much more extortionate prices like other contemporaries;Quantity 5/5: I still have a full belly from lunch (well into dinner time);Location 5/5: this is important as it adds to overall experience- it’s right on Regent’s St; andService 4/5: waiters were incredibly polite, speed of service was impeccable, maitre’d and designated waiter would check from time to time (and are lively conversationalist), and had good recommendations. Only docked 1 star as they initially offered a rather lousy seat (even when venue wasn’t packed), and some times one of the junior waiter wasn’t very attentive - but both were of course rectified by maitre’d who was great.Overall- a foodie’s paradise, and a must visit establishment if you’re hot on Indian food.Got the set menu, and topped up with a main course between 2 people. The mango lassi is a must - and 1926 + the Spring Cool were excellent.
I chose this restaurant for my partners birthday in February based on reviews. I was extremely disappointed. I informed the restaurant that it was a special occasion but on arrival was shown to one of the tables without a tablecloth facing out onto Regent Street. The other side of the restaurant had a more exclusive feel, linen tablecloths and a much better ambiance more suited to a romantic dinner which is what I was hoping for. The meal was not inexpensive at £173 and I expected at least a tablecloth and less of a bistro feel. The food was good although the portions were quite small.Normally we would go to Dishooms (much better value for moneywhich is buzzy and bistro like, but had wanted to revisit Veeraswamy as I used to go with my father many years ago. I did contact the restaurant directly after the dinner but received no reply hence the late review.I do think if the restaurant is informed it is a special occasion they should make more of an effort to make their guests feel welcome.
The lunch menu had very few options. The chetinnad Korma curry was very disappointing. The veges were under cooked the sauce was quite thin and spices felt raw. They should remove this from their menu and stick to a classic vegetarian dish. The vegetarian platter was good but it also had the chetinnad curry, the potatoes could do with more flavour. You can chose rice or nan not both with the curries.Bread basket was good.Lassi quantity was little for 6 pounds.Panner Tikka and chat for starters were good.
The ultimate Indian dining experience in London, if not in the Western Hemisphere. Great service, and great flavours.
Great customer service and I would recommend to a friend. The ambience was spot on for a special occasion. The food was okay and well presented
The service is impeccable. Rather than providing an overwhelming menu with average cooking, the quality of the food certainly meets Michelin standards like the service. Decor is easy on the eye, and if you get a window seat, you get to see Regents Street and the world go by.The set menu gives options if you want a little bit of everything, though if like me, you are intolerant to coconut milk and dairy, best avoid that and go a la carte. We went for my mums 60th. Well certainly be interested in trying the other restaurants within the group.
Amazing food. Absolutely sensational. Fantastic customer service. This restaurant has been open for so long because of its authenticity and flavourful Indian food. Highly recommended to anyone visiting London
As a Michelin starred fine dining establishment with a lot of history, the food is only a part of the experience. In terms of ambiance and decor its quite tastefully done, and you get a sense for how much history the restaurant has.As for the food, its definitely good, but I was expecting just a little more considering the price and prestige. As some others have mentioned, I was also a little disappointed that theres a dress code mentioned on the website but not particularly enforced.
The position is convenient and the environment is romantic. The waiter was very professional and helpful when providing suggestions on food, and made it just enough for four. This lamb is really tender and tasty, but with a crispy skin.
By far the best Indian food you will ever have. I can not fault anything. Great venue, Great service and Great food!!!
food is just a small fraction of the dining experience at veeraswamy. the food was delicious, flavour in every bite but the portions were small for the price. my main problem with the restaurant was that i gave my coat to be put in the cloakroom but when i received it back there were marks all over the arm as if it had been dropped on a dirty floor. (photo belowhighly disappointed as this ruined my whole experience. lastly we had a few waiters but one of the ones that came to clean our table made so much noise and dropped food off the plate without noticing. unprofessional for a place with so much reputation. i was also shocked to see very few people following the dress code on their website - some people were in hoodies and sports shoes?
Great place! Very delicious food!Dish that stands out in my opinion is patiala shahi raan - lamb shank wrapped in a thin flatbread and cooked for 6 hours accompanied with some curry on the side. Probably one of the best lamb dishes I’ve ever tried, very succulent and soft, good combination of spices. Also, really liked chicken momos, which was some kind of Indian dumplings.Lamb chops were cooked perfectly, though I think proper knife for steaks/meat should be served for them, otherwise its really hard to cut them.Raita was a bit too sweet in my opinion…Service was good and very attentive, though I think our waitress was a novice and made some mistakes a few times, didn’t have info on some dishes, which is ok in general, but not what I expected from a Michelin starred restaurant.Overall very good experience, would definitely come back!
The best Indian restaurant in London. I had a lunch with my wife and we ordered Chicken Beryani and Chicken Makhani. The food was very tasty and delicious. The service was perfect and the staff at the restaurant were very friendly.
It was a wonderful dinning experienceWent for my wife’s birthday. All the staff where well mannered and attentive. We had the tasting menu very reasonably priced for the standard of the resturant.Started the meal with asoup - tasting like it was cooked in a indian homeHad prawn and tikka for starters - amazing you can taste the favours engulfing the food.Had 4 curries for mainsLobster curry - the sauce was really nice but not being a lobster person that didn’t tickle my fancyChicken curry - one of the best full of flavour and tender soft chickenMeat curry - it was different tasting to any other meat curry i had but i dont like meat and didn’t like this after tasting it so this a person aspect.Pineapple curry - creamy and warm pineapple was quite nice but there is an after taste that most wont like. I liked it buy my mrs didntTo end the night they surprised my mrs with some ice cream sherbet and the dessert was chocolate moose with fruits and gold flakesI want to especially thank *AGNELO* for his expectational service and attentiveness. He ensured that we where taken care of throughout the night. This is credit where it is deserved. I hope management do recognise this and reward him. He was the highlight of the night and made the experience that extra special. Thank you
Each and every dish is delicious. You wont go wrong with anything on the menu. Hands down the best in London.
Lovely setting, gorgeous food! I had to take a star off because the website says that all lamb and chicken is halal, but when I asked the waiter I was told that the only lamb suitable was the seekh kebabs and the chops.
An exquisite dining experience. The ambience- interior design, decor and music- is all around very pleasant and definitely high-end, so not suitable for young children. The food is delicious and beautifully presented and the service impeccable! Despite the high price, I would definitely recommend for a special occasion, as London has a wide range of amazing Indian to offer.
One of the oldest fine dining Indian restaurant. Great quality of food. Must try Rajkachori from their menu. Classic Vegetable platter, covid safety protocol followed. Ambience was pleasant. Vegetarian and vegan options available.
The food was absolutely amazing and flavourful. The atmosphere was great and staff was quite helpful. The location is very convenient. Although the price was a little higher it was completely worth it. The was a range of food choices. The only problem was that the portions were quite big so no one at the table finished their meal completely. Suitable for older children and vegetarians.
Great experience during our visit to celebrate a special occasion. Very nice hospitality by the entire staff and the weekend lunch menu has great variety of options, everything we ordered was absolutely yummy.
Had a enjoyable Saturday lunchtime meal.Nice flavours, great to have an Indian menu with dishes you dont recognise ensuring youre trying something different.Good cocktails rounded the meal off nicely
