According to Cunningham the boundary of Varendra was the Ganges and the Mahananda on the west, the Karatoya on the east, the Padma on the south, and the land between Koochbihar and the Terai on the north. The Varendra Brahmins originated from this region.

Barind Research Museum is one of the best museums in Bangladesh. This is a great achievement of Barind Research Society. Saratkumar Roy and his collaborators Akshay Kumar Maitreya, Ramaprasad Chand and others spent their time and labor in building these two archeological institutions. Their whole lifes endeavor was to expose the invaluable artefacts of that time (Bengal, especially Barindri).
One of the oldest museums in Bangladesh. The museum is well organized with the lyrics of different ages. One should enter there with ample time in hand to visit the whole museum. There is free space in the front side of the museum building. Very good place to bring young kids. Taking photo of inside is prohibited 🚭. Entry fee is reasonable.

The oldest museum in Bangladesh is the Varendra Research Museum. It was established in 1910. Located at Hetemkhan in Rajshahi city. The museum has a connecting road or turn at the center. For this reason, this place has been named as Museum Junction. This junction was formerly known as Sadar Junction. Rajshahi Dental College is also located at this place.
The Barind Research Museum is located at Hetem Khan, the heart of the Rajshahi metropolis. This is the first museum in Bangladesh. It is one of the archeological collections in South Asia. Sarat Kumar Roy, zamindar of the Dighapatiya royal family of Natore, lawyer Akshay Kumar Maitreya and teacher of Rajshahi Collegiate School Ramprasad Chandra have made significant contributions to the establishment of the Barind Museum. In 1910, they formed the Barindra Research Society to collect and preserve the heritage and artifacts of Bengal. In that year, they searched various places in Rajshahi and collected 32 rare specimens. Construction of the museums own building began on land donated by Sarat Kumar Roy to preserve the artefacts. Construction was completed in 1913 AD. The museum was inaugurated on 13 November of the same year by the then Governor of Bengal, Carmichael. The foundation stone of Lord Carmichael was laid in 1911. The Calcutta Museum suddenly demanded all the artefacts preserved in it. At the initiative of the then Governor Carmichael, the Barind Museum was given the authority to collect and preserve its artefacts through an official notification issued on 14 February 1913. In 1923, Calcutta University jointly with the museum authorities began excavations at the Paharpur Buddhist Monastery in Naogaon. Later, 258 specimens were discovered from Paharpur in a single effort of the Barind Research Society. After 1947, there was a crisis over the existence of the museum. From 1949 to 1961, half of the museum building was used as a medical school. When the museum was about to close in 1984, Rajshahi University acquired its movable and immovable property on October 10 of that year. Among the visitors of the museum are Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and many other famous personalities.

Varendra Research Museum was established in 1910 and the oldest museum in Bangladesh .Varendra museum maintained by the popular Rajshahi University. It is located in the heart of Rajshahi. It is really beautiful and highly historical. It’s still carrying our existence and identity from past. It is one of the pride of our country. Often thousands of people go there to enjoy their free time and to know the history.
Lots of historical artifacts are here. Seems like without any care by naked eye. Most of them are relics from circa 900 to 1800. Could be improved and properly organised. Non expertise restoration damaged some items. And photography prohibition doesnt make any sense. If you have interest in anthropology couldve spend good time here. The building alone built at 1916. It was ment to be a meausium and research center from the beginning.
The very first museum of East Bengal, now maintained well by Rajshahi University. It has a great collection of black basalt sculptures and valuable scriptures. The front garden is beautiful. A great heritage and a must visit in Rajshahi.
