Fascinating cave city in a stunning canyon location. A must see in Georgia. Price in September 2022 was 15 lari per person for entry. You can get an audio guide in English for 15 lari (and you have to leave a photo ID as insurance). Its worth paying 2 lari for the minibus to take you up the hill, because you will be walking a lot once you get there. Its about 60 to 90 minutes to walk the full route - with a very steep set of steps downhill at the end. There was one restaurant open at the entrance with normal prices for Georgia, and quick service.

Amazing cave city and the church. Very large area with multiple long tunnels carved inside the rock and a small water pool. Quite crowded at times.

Beautiful and a unique landmark.About 1km of walking up towards the caves. The front part of the caves collapsed few times, making it hard to realize how it actually was

Really unique! Its still huge complex of houses in stone. There is small group of monks which still live there. The walk through caves takes about 1-1,5 hour. There are some steep passages so take good shoes.Parking is big enough and there are few shops and restaurant where you can wait before you go to Vardzia. There are also free toilets outside.

Amazing and extremely exciting place in Georgia, the ancient city inside mountain is astonishing and chills giving. Every room and cm of this place worth visiting and memorizing. Enormous and interesting history behind each wall and room, ancient: ventilation, water, wine and food systems, beautiful and atmospheric church, amazing views of mountains. Our ancestors intelligence, knowledge, hardworking and soul is really remarkable and magnificent!

A must see if you are in Georgia. The price is absolut fair for this place. Bring some time to discover this old place.Definitely don’t miss the part where it goes into the caves. If you want to visit the church inside, don’t forgot to bring long clothes and something to cover your head.

Cool place, especially for active children. There are some tunels inside that we found very interesting. The road to this place is really okay comparing to the roads we had in Mestia, i am sure normal car can do it if there is no rain

Not needed to buy tickets in advance. About going up, we walked and we survived, it is a 10/15 minutes walk. As far as I can tell, theres no need to take the transportation.About the place in itself, it is ok. Nothing special I would say. But it is worth going there even if it is just to scratch it from the to see list in Georgia.

DONT COME HEREI came here to learn about Georgian History and see the famous murals of Queen Tamar. Well, the Main Chapel, the main site of Vardzia is LOCKED. There was a crack in the door and I looked inside. The 3 “monks” that live in Vardzia were stirring at a table playing cards, smoking. 10 seconds they saw me looking and started shouting at me and slammed the door shut. I don’t know if these were the actual monks but it’s disgusting to lock and SMOKE CIGARETTES in the room with precious 12th century murals. Seriously, how has nobody else complained about this ???The rest of Vardzia is extremely dangerous. One of the staircases with railing on one side is basically a slide. I didn’t come here to do mountain climbing. Admission is 15 lari if you speak Georgian and 30 for everyone else. Extremely disappointed and a waste of time.

Amazing! Filled with history..got to learn about King Tamar and all the amazing things about Georgia. The hike up is quite challenging so make sure you wear comfortable shoes and a cap. To visit the monastery all the way make sure you are not afraid of heights and can handle closed spaces as the hike down takes through caves.

Must visit. A very beautiful and scenic place. Has a lot of history attached to it. The ticket price is 15GEL and you can also take a minibus to go to the top where the caves start. This costs additional 2GEL(highly recommended). There are small cafe at the ticket counter. But pack snacks beforehand as the entire trip to see everything will take at least 2.5-3 hrs. This is a one way route so make sure you see as and when you reach a point and take pictures. You can also opt for a audio guide in English russian and Ukrainian for 15GEL. One audio machine has two output for headphones so 2 ppl can listen.

I will simultaneously give it amazing and meh, please do not get me wrong, it is properly epic and well worth going to, but once you have seen one 1000 year old hand carved cave...You really should go, not only the site but the area is amazing, but probably an hours worth so worth seeing other things on the way and around than just getting a marshrutka straight there and nothing else

Outstanding beautiful place. It’s open even now in winter. It might be complicated for people with limited ability to move. There are many stairs and many tiny places to discover. The church in the inside is fascinating. Lovely service! You can get there by marshrutka from Akhaltsikhe for 6gel one way. It leaves from the bus station at 12.20 and then it leaves back to the city from the caves at 15.00 so you have about 1 hour 10 mins to explore the caves, which is sufficient.

Georgias answer to Cappadocia🇬🇪🤜💥🤛🇹🇷This place is by far one of the most interesting things Ive seen here in Georgia over the last few months. Very reminiscent of the ancient hand carved churches in Cappadocia Turkey buuuut when a unique twist 🆕These monasteries are carved out of a cliff face which in and of itself is very interesting but also theres a functional monastery here complete with monks and normal religious ceremonies ⛪This site is pretty close to the modern-day Turkish border and this entire part of the world was shaped by the previous ancient people. No surprise to see old relics such as this repurposed over and over and over agaaaaain 🌄🌌☯️Really enjoyed all the frescoes inside of the little active monastery as well as climbing around some of these super cool ancient tunnels that meander inside of this mountain popping out in different little rooms around the complex 👌👌👌

Absolutely mind blowing and gorgeous site, worth visiting!!!You need to be physically ready to hike up to the caves, visit those narrow tunnels and get down by long stairs which are quite challenging. Other than that it’s great!! If you are visiting on your own, make sure to take a local guide or at least an audio guide, so you can know everything about Vardzia.

Wonderful place. Similar to those in Cappadocia (Turkeybut if you are here for the first time, get a guide who will tell you interesting facts about Vardzia.Might be difficult to reach for those who arent that sporty. The cave town is full of small narrow stairs that you need to walk up and down, so highly do not recommend for people who have problems with their knees.

After spending 3 hours in Vardzia we were tired and decided to eat at the touristy place. Turnout the food was good, service was great and very reasonable price. Sitting next by the river feels colder in a hot hot day.

One of the must see places in Georgia. City isltself is almost totally demolished and there are almost no artifacts there, but its still worth to visit and take a guide who can explain everything and tell the story of great times for this region.

Fascinating cave townA cave town containing a large number of caves carved in the mountain in the twelfth century, it is hard to believe that people used to live in these caves, quite fascinating to see, the condition of the caves is not bad, some better than the others, the church within the cave and the escape route were really unbelievable. This site is highly recommended, and I do recommend having a guide to explain the details and the history, making your visit much more fascinating interesting. The complex stretches over several levels connected by walkways and staircases, and the hike up there is not easy, make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Came in late june(since we were stuck here before covidonly 2 groups of other domestic tourists. All to ourselves! Spent maybe 1.5 hours exploring the caves. Beautiful things to admire and indulge in. We didnt take a guide, but the option was available. The climb down at the end is steep so just watch yourself!Overall, a definitely must visit(also quite similar to the caves in cappadocia), a better version imo of the ones in uplitskhihe. Also there is a friendly staff member who was offering his guest house for staying and local food/drink (gocha guesthouse), unfortunately for us it was only a day trip.

One of the most beautiful places in Georgia. It is really impressive to see a whole town in caves and imagine how people used to live inside them. You can also walk through some of the narrow tunnels which used to connect the caves . The view from up there is amazing. It a long drive from Tbilisi but surely worths a visit.

Nice place. Better to do with guide or at least with audio guide. Better to do it without time limitation and sit at every interesting spot. For us it take 3 hours with kids, but it can be 1 hour more if you decide to visit every cave. Beautiful views. Remember that at hot time it less pleasant to visit the site.
