Hilltop castle serving as prince's family residence, with scenic city views from adjacent grounds.
Vaduz Castle in Herisau
Description
Nice small hike from the city center. You cannot go inside the castle as its a private property. So, only for the top view of the city and some nice photos. :)
MoreI didnt get the chance to tour inside the castle, as I arrived too late on a Sunday to do so, but the grounds were very well-maintained in a natural way that made nearby trails a great place to walk and see the castle and Vaduz. They have a nice balance of landscaping and natural forest and plants. Also, the castle, at least from the outside, looked mostly original and seemed to maintain its major architectural basis from the 12th and 13th centuries.
MoreThe first elements of the castle date back to the 13th century and it was continuously enlarged until the 15th century. After its destruction in 1499 during the Swabian War, it was restored by the Counts of Sulz and equipped with fortified turrets. Following the 1712 transfer of the County of Vaduz to the Prince of Liechtenstein, who lived in Vienna, the castle was deserted: only in 1938 the Princely Family took up residence here. Unfortunately the castle is closed to visitors.
MoreA beautiful Castle. You easily reach by car or just few minutes hike from the town.
Morewhat a beautiful country! they got a water tap next to the parking above the castle with the best water in the world.
MoreThe hiking up there was pretty chill and had some amazing scenery. But the castle itself was not too magnificent and was not open for tourists.
MoreView from the castle is amazing. Parking is free. Castle is private. I wish i knew this before i went there. Because you cannot get inside the castle. Google says Liechtenstein is known for its castles, i really did not understand why. 😐. Castle can also be reached by foot from the centre
MoreBeautiful place with outstanding view.
The castle above the city of Vaduz. Unfortunately, it is not accessible to the public. Its worth a look at least from the outside. A nice road leads here from Triesenberg, about 7 km long.
MoreUnfortunately the weather was not kind to us when we passed through Lichtenstein. We had hoped to spend a little more time here but due to low cloud and pouring rain you couldnt see a thing, so we moved onto Feldkirch, in Austria where the weather cleared up. Hopefully we will get another opportunity to visit and the weather will be a little kinder.
MoreLong walk to castle. Cannot get in. Can take pictures from the outside.
Lichtenstein is one of the most beautiful place to visit.
Unfortunately when we tried to visit the castle it was closed. We were asked to get the passport daily pass for Liechtenstein but we were not informed from the tourist office about the closer of the castle.Anyway, when you are there be ready to have a rain jacket because the microclimate can change very fast because of the surrounding mountains.
MoreThis castle is not open for visits, since it is the residence of the Royals - the Prince of Liechtenstein lives there. You can usually admire the exteriors even from close by - another disappointment for us, the roads leading to the castle were closes for obscure reasons.
MoreVery nice castle but it was not open due to the restoration. It was under restoration too 3 years ago. You cannot get into the castle but the places around the castle are great. You can also have a nice view of a part of Vaduz from above. You can also see Switzerland from there.
MoreGreat experience walking up to see one of the oldest castles in this part of Europe. There is a walking path take a around 30 min. Don’t use car. Nature is beautiful and you would not regret. Vaduz Castle lies on a hillside 120 metres above Vaduz. It is the symbol of the capital and can be seen from far away.It is thought that the castle was constructed as a fortress as early as the 12th century, before living quarters were added in 1287. Vaduz Castle is first mentioned in documents dating back to 1322.The castle came into the ownership of the Princely Family in 1712 and the west wing served as the familys official residence until 1732. However, after that the building became increasingly dilapidated and fell into disrepair before being rebuilt and renovated between 1905 and 1912.Under Prince Franz Josef II the castle was extended and once again made fit for living. In 1939 the Prince moved in with his family and adopted Vaduz Castle as his official residence.Unfortunately, the castle is closed to visitors. However, guided tours of Vaduz and the Princely Theatre give interesting insights into the history of the castle and the Princely House.
MoreCant tell much about it. It was closed for renovation. But the area is a great choice for people looking for a quick hike or for people walking their pets. Theres also a parking spot a bit higher on the road.
MoreIt was closed or we just were told not to enter the courtyard by some guy. Looked like heavy renovation was going on. The walk up was steep and regarding with a nice view over Vaduz.
MoreNothing special. You can not enter the castle, because this is private territory. Also, from outside this castle was boring. No interesting elements to see.
MoreThe view is nice, but the hike up was not worth it as works were being carried out and you could not visit the castle.
MoreBeautiful place from outside. I had the opportunity to visited it on 15th of August when is the national day of Liechtenstein. I met the prince of liechtenstein and was amazing. Difficult to walk up pushing baby stroller, but we had a great time. Highly recommend it!
MoreYou wont be able to look inside, but its definitely worth a short stop. Even from the outside, the castle is very nice, the surroundings are picturesque and the views are breathtaking. Attention, the nearby parking lot has a rather small capacity.
MoreNice view of the castle from the back, but there is basically nothing to see as it’s completely closed to public.
MorePretty castle with a nice view of the city and free bathroom free parking. Worth a visit!
MoreReally a nice place from outside. Parking was free and view was amazing.
The private residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein, the castle sits on top of a hill overlooking Vaduz. To reach the castle, youll need to hike for about 30 minutes from the Vaduz city centre. The hike is quite easy, with signboards along the way telling you the story of Liechtenstein. The view gets better as you reach the top too, with a great view of Vaduz and the surrounding mountains. While you cannot enter the castle, the scenery offers a lot of great photo opportunity. As this is an outdoor activity, be sure to wear appropriate clothing and check the weather before proceeding.
MoreGorgeous location to take pics. The view around the castle is awesome. Could not visit due to construction and I dont think anyone can visit this castle. Worth going up the hill. Highly recommend it if you are in the area. Parking nearby is free. Free restroom right by free parking, too.
MoreNice view yet people are not allowed to visit inside as prince lives there. It is 2022 my prince dude, chill out and let us see your place. ✌️
MoreLovely walk to the castle and great views of the city from above. Too bad we cannot see the castle from inside. The ruling family still lives here.
MoreDon’t go here… hike to nowhere. There is no view you can access just trees and the outside of the castle which isn’t particularly impressive if you’ve seen a castle before.A guard will tell you to go away if you come too close.
MoreAmazing place on the sky, very clean city with fresh air must see attractions
Great view from the top... And a great refreshing breeze too
A small, beautiful castle with a magnificent picturesque background of Swiss alps. Yes it is a view you should experience personally. Serene and peaceful up there. Its a 700 year old castle still inhabited by the royal family and open to the public only once a year on August 15. The prince still lives here. Reaching here by walking from the downtown is much better than driving, since you experience and absorb the beautiful views more. There is a small observation deck on the way to the castle from where you can see the entire town of Vaduz and the surroundings snow capped Alps. It is a pity that the castle is not open for the public. You walk all the way up to the mountain just to watch it from the outside.
MoreWe hiked to the castle. It was a nice experience. We asked an information lady whether there was another way up, because we were with my mother and it is quite high. She said walking was the only way. We realized half way up that we could have driven up there. Unfortunately once up there you cant visit the castle. You can only see the back from the outside. Overall the view from the belvedere just before the castle is gorgeous.
MoreIt is a nice small castle but you can only view it from the outside and just from the road actually. There is a parking a bit higher up the hill and they have some big flags at the entry which makes it look like you can visit it but this is not the case. So a bit of a waste to go all the way up. Definitely if you are hiking. Although the views are nice.
MoreVery impressive perched halfway up a mountain. Illuminated at night, unfortunately there is no public visit access. A very good view from Rheinpark Stadion car park.
MoreA valuable country tour. It was a very nice view. Although there is nothing
Great castle, which you can only see by the outside
Cute place and castle like one of Disneys ! You can park your car for free for 1 hour at the basement parking for chf 1.5 there after, which is neat , the entire place is awesome to walk around and dont miss the ice creams!
MoreBeautiful old castle stood overlook the principality over 700 years, home to the royal family of Lichtenstein 🇱🇮Walk up from the small trail from the lower Vaduz town to explore beautiful forest
MoreBeautiful place.. visitors are not allowed inside the castle but the view from the top is breathtaking. You can view the entire Vaduz from the top.
MoreThis is the Princes private residence. The castle is beautiful and the views must be incredible. Worth a stop even to just look from the outside.
MoreA beautiful castle 🏰 that looks stunning from the town of Vaduz. Even more beautiful in person and up close. However just nice to take just photos as you can’t go onto the property. The prince actually lives there. He has a very nice home!
MoreA nice hiking trail from city center to here. Beautiful scenery if the weather is nice.
MoreGoing up to the Vaduz Castle, first and foremost you go to the Tourist Information and ask for a Guide Map. From this Map shows the direction from the Liechtenstein Center right to the top of Vaduz Castle. Just follow the signs! And at the top, you can see Mountains covered with snow during Winter and the castle it self. Going inside the castle is unfortunately not allowed 🤭😌 But hey, the view up there is breathtakingly beautiful.
MoreI would love to give this 5 stars, however... the castle has been the primary residence of Liechtensteins Princely Family. The castle is not open to the public as the princely family still lives in the castle. I simply can not give 5 stars to a castle, I cant experience, so 4 stars it is. I hope the House of Liechtenstein does not take this personally. However, the views are really quite beautiful, there are really nice walking trails nearby, and the castle parking was quite convenient.
MoreBuilt almost 700 years ago its in possession with prince of Liechtenstein. Can only be visited from outside as it is private property. Parking is available if youre visiting by car.The walk up to the castle is lovely and scenic. On one special day of the year, August 15th, lucky locals and visitors gain a glimpse of the interior of Vaduz Castle.
MoreThe entry to the palace is not allowed to the public since it is the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. You can click some pictures near the palace.
MoreWorth the visit for the scenic view and the history behind the location, but tours of the interior aren’t offered as it is still a private residence. Accessible both by driving up the side of the mountain and walking, just be prepared for difficulty in finding parking nearby.
MoreIt isnt a special castle or anything. It is unique because it is in Liechtenstein which is enough. You cant go inside (as far as my knowledge is not mistakenbut you can hike up and have a wonderful view. Definitely worth your time
