Upstairs at Hollick - Restaurant in Penola, Australia
Very upmarket dinning- asked for bread but they don’t have bread, my medium eye fillet was med- well done and tough made a new one but when it returned my wife and I had finished inc $30 for potato’s and brochli really ! Waited after we finished 20 mins for new steak and this was just above medium but lovely and the waitress was lovely- disappointed for a special occasion- 1 x$35 bottle of Wine and meals nearly total $180 - not good value for a country restaurant- wouldn’t return at city 5 star restaurant prices and wasn’t even offered a free coffee mm
From the service, to the food and the view our lunch at Hollicks was excellent. Would highly recommend.
Highly recommend Hollicks to everyone. The staff, food, wine was absolutely outstanding. We had lunch then returned to dinner and left the food and wine choices to the staff. Could not have asked for anymore. Thank you guys.
Wonderful food and service. Great advice on pairing wine with menu based on our individual tastes.
Had lunch here today to celebrate an occasion and dont think we could have gone to a better place. The host Amanda was very hospitable and made the experience very enjoyable. Chef Lucky served us some amazing food chargrilled chicken breast, south eye fillet and creme brulee. Exceptional food and experience. Would highly recommend.
We had the pleasure of dining at the hillock. Though the night was dark and raining the atmosphere produced by the staff warmed us. The food was delicious and we had a lovely chat with chef afterwards. The care and pride of the restaurant is very apparent within the staff. Thanks for the lovely evening.
Impressed with staff knowledge and loved the fact I could order 1/2 glasses of wine so I could enjoy and still safely drive. Food good, room bright and happy. Cant wait yo stop in again.
This should be 4.5 stars - our party of four had a wonderful lunch at Upstairs Restaurant early this week. The room is open & bright, with plenty of room between tables. The vineyard views are lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and great table service. Our beef & pork dishes were generous and very well cooked. If one or two vegetarian main meal options had been on the menu it would have been perfect, but the delightfully passsionate chef Lucky catered for this requirement very well. We will certainly return to Upstairs Restaurant on our next road trip to the Coonawarra. Thank you all.
Fantastic meal, lovely service, great location
Thanks for the hospitality, outstanding food, service, and the view of the vineyard!
Great service from Ben. Delicious meal and nice that the chef came to our table after dinner to chat. Great wines to enjoy with the food.
An absolute must when visiting the Coonawarra. Such a lovely dinner here on the weekend and Ben took great care of us. Food, wine and service were all absolutely divine.
Dined here last week the food and wine pairings were both phenomenal. We enjoyed chef Luckys special menu and Bens fantastic wine pairings. Great atmosphere throughout the venue and service from Ben and Hannah was fantastic. Would definitely recommend this restaurant if you love great food and wine!
Great food and lovely wines. Was also nice that the chef came out for a chat and to talk to us about the days menu, how the food had been selected, prepared, etc. Also, the service staff were nothing short of delightful, as was the lady at the tasting area. All around, just a pleasant experience.
It was a cold wet day and Hollicks Upstairs was a welcome refuge. The service was friendly and professional, the food delicious and the wine delightful. The added bonus was the chef coming to chat at our table. Excellent.
Friendly staff and fabulous food. Definitely a must visit in the region.
What a beautiful place to have lunch. The staff are amazing and the food is high end .Exceptional!!!
The food was absolutely delicious. The steak was cooked to perfection and the staff were super nice and helpful with recommending wines to drink that pair well with our meals. Will definitely be going back there again.
We had a wonderful night with great food, service and wine. We enjoyed every minute of it.
Lucky is a very talented chef, everything we had was extremely delicious. We had 3 courses because we had to try as much as possible. Lucky came to our table and discussed his passion for cooking and told us a bit of his history coming to Australia and how he came to work for Hollick. He’s been on a real journey and we wish him well. Ben was a very attentive host with a sense of humour even if doesn’t like Chardonnay! Can’t recommend this place highly enough.
The views from our table were wonderful, overlooking the vines. The staff were very friendly and engaging. The chef, Lucky, came to our table and introduced each course and we enjoyed learning about his discovery and love of food and development of flavours. Our dishes were prepared and presented superbly. The Eye Fillet with the Mushroom Truffle Sauce was a strong 10/10. Ben tempted us with a museum (agedChardonnay which was very elegant and complimented the oysters nicely. Highly recommend this cellar door and restaurant restaurant.
A very elegant dining space overlooking the vines. The food, the service and the matched wines were all superb. The personal touch of the chef visiting the table was the very welcome finishing touch.
Recently I dined at Upstairs at Hollicks on two occasions, once for dinner and once for lunch.I was pleasantly surprised at how good and consistent the food, wine & service is. On both occasions I had the eye fillet steak, cooked to perfection (or my personal perfection as orderedthe quality of the steak was excellent. Combined with great wine and attentive ( but not overbearingservice. On the second occasion (dinnerI tried the duck spring rolls as an entree which were delicious.
Staff were amazing & the meal was unbelievable. We even had a visit from the Chef which was a highlight. Will definitely go back.
We had a table with a gorgeous view looking over the vineyards with the sun beaming. Ben was a super engaged host and showed us a great time. The food was delicious and the wines were so yummy too. Thanks for a wonderful afternoon, cheers! Until next time 🍾🥂
Had the pork belly dish done by Chef Lucky. It was just like what you see in Ratatouille movie when Anton eats Ratatouille it makes him reminds of his mothers cooking. I had the same Nostalgia. The dish was excellent, will definitely come here and enjoy more dishes from Chef Lucky
We had dinner here so couldnt appreciate the views in the dark, but loved the ferry lights strewn around the back deck.Ben was fantastic, and super attentive. The food was delicious and the wines we drank with our meal were perfect. Thanks for a fabulous last night in Penola.Love from "Moira"
Wonderful afternoon at Upstairs at Hollick. Great food - thanks Lucky, and terrific service from Ben. Amanda in the Wine Tasting was very welcoming and knowledgeable. All in all - highly recommended.
Meal was very good, though a little different than the menu, (my wife does not like chilli). Staff were very friendly attentive and helpful.
We visited as apart of a winery tour. Very friendly staff. The food is absolutely incredible. We cant wait to visit again
Wonderful venue with a fantastic view unfortunately that’s about where it ended for us…. The menu was sparse to say the least. We both decided that the pork belly would be our safest bet as none of the menu items advertised on the website were available. Served with mushrooms, asparagus cauliflower purée and red onions we were anticipating a wonderful plate…. What we got was a very nicely cooked 150g slice of pork belly, 4 halved, pan fried button mushrooms, 2 pan fried sprigs of asparagus piled atop the pork with a garnish of red onion and rocket oh and I almost forgot (as it was very forgettablea 20c piece size squirt of cauliflower purée. We joked at the redundancy of the side plates as there are no sides available… No breads, no veg or salads nothing but empty plates. To finish 2 choices whipped chocolate cheese cake or wild fennel panna cotta… oh tea or coffee that’s it!! You guys need to update your web page because if we’d been able to see the menu prior to booking we would have gone elsewhere. It really felt as though the “chef” was working from home and had decided to phone it in. As for the service sheep in drenching yard comes to mind. I know we’ve all suffered due to Covid ect but the only way to survive is to move on. We will be.
Amazing venue food and wine devine
Nice setting upstairs , outlook over vineyards. The Atlantic salmon was quite overdone, I should have returned it. Good wine selection, quality is great.
Absolutely wonderful. The meal was superb and the service was fantastic. The outlook is also great, especially this time of year with the grape vines turning colour. And a special little extra for all the mums on Mothers day a lovely touch.
We went for the set degustation table experience. Absolutely beautiful food, cooked perfectly and the wine was excellent, including a delicious 2008 cabernet sauvignon that they only serve with this experience, well worth it just for that wine! The whole thing was amazing value for money! I cant wait to go back and experience another seasons menu.
4.5 stars. The food and wine selection was good. Couldnt fault the food at all apart from the serving size being a bit small compared to the cost. View from the deck is nice. Overall good experience
Really nice food. Make sure you call and book to get a spot. We had the feed me option for $65 per person. Got something that wasnt on the menu, which was neat. Staff are excellent. I gave this 4 and not 5 because we felt we could have had a main dish each for $65
Wonderful restaurant overlooking the vines. The menu is sensational- every dish is drool-worthy. Food is very reasonably priced for what you get. We did the degustation menu with matching wines. The “36’ South” beef is sublime and so tender - and it is reared 200m further down the laneway! Service is great too. There is also the Hollicks cellar door beside the restaurant so you can do a tasting while waiting for your table/ before lunch.
Really quite disappointed. We had our daughters school graduation dinner here. We were told it would be upstairs but instead it was down stairs on uncomfortable wooden chairs with trestle tables and looked like a cheap budget wedding. Food was not bad.
Great veiws. Quiet lunchtime dining. Not large servings but very satisfying taste, presentation and menu variety.Food well matched to recommend wines.
We had a fantastic experience that started with a morning wine tasting. Great product and pleasant informative journey through the tasting range that featured some wonderful reds. We finished off the day at the restaurant with superb food and paired wines. The view was amazing and the service outstanding. Cannot recommend this winery enough. Special mention to Hannah who made us feel so special. They even offered to drive us back to our accommodation to save us the walk. Weve found our newest favorite winery and well be telling everyone. Well done.
It’s a nice establishment in wineries of Hollicks. We did wine tasting before the lunch - service was slow but really good.Steak was delicious and wine even better! Would definitely come back if around.
Lovely three course lunch and a good bottle of wine for two for $150?! Whats not to like? Great food from beginning to end backed by good service from the very capable and lovely waitstaff. The ox tongue was the stand out, the best I have had in a very very long time. Highly recommended for all! Definatly worth the trip and cannot wait to come back.
One of the best winery lunch experiences you can have. Amazing food. Can purchase the top quality wines by the glass which you cant sample at the winery and it is poured generously
Excellent food, wine and location with friendly, helpful staff. We ate on the deck after extensive research on what wine to have with lunch.
Beautifully presented, delicious food and amazing service! There was a booking confusion but the staff immediately sorted it out and booked us in for the lunch.Highly recommend going for the wine matched meals.
Unfortunately did not live up to expectations.. Good quality food but the wait was atrocious. 1 and a half hour wait for our mains....prehaps a little more sauce throughout the mains and a little more diligence on service memory. We had to order sparkling water more than twice over before it came and mains arrived without cutlery... When waitress mentioned that shed bring 25mins ago.... Would we come again? Not if we intend on visiting a couple more wineries. We sincerely ran out of time with such a long wait for or lunch sadly...
Had a wonderful lunch in beautiful surrounding. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, the service was prompt and the wines delicious. Desert to die for and all reasonably priced so we would definitely recommend it to everyone
Very friendly, attentive and prompt service, lovely wines (half glass was fantastic as we could sample moreand delicious food (we ordered the ravioli, eye fillet and duck). View is great too. Highly recommended.
Great staff, friendly and welcoming atmoshphere. Great wine and stunning food. Perfect afternoon. Well worth coming back. One of the best lunches i have ever had
