Ha-Hagana St 10, Acre, Israel, ‘Akko
Gallery with life-size dioramas portraying experiences of prisoners during the British Mandate.
nice place. It is recommended to take a guided tour of the place.
Excellent visit. Important historical site
As a foreigner this was not interesting for me. Little explanations what the site is about, might be more interesting for you if you are a Local/Israeli/Jew.
Very interesting and impressive museum. A must visit spot.
Impressive placeThe Jewish fight for liberty and freedom in Israel before 1948
Interesting place and stories!!
Very interesting, wish there was more of the information translated into english and not just the titles and none of the films were working.Definatly worth a visit
Very nice. Comparable to the one in Jerusalem. It has a 35 min movie and then you are free to roam the grounds. There are QR codes in various places that will play a short YouTube but beware phone service is spotty. There were many signs and most were translated to English as well. Bathrooms onsite were mostly clean.
The prison itself is cool and a piece of history. Built on top of a crusaders castle the prison is used by the ottomans and the British. The bad thing is only the Israeli side of the story is show theres nothing about the prison or the history of it other than the stories of leaders of Israeli gangs pre to 1948 war. If you are not an Israeli interested in the pre 1948 war, dont go.
Excellent
Museum and memorial of the resistance and the war of Independence. Well displayed but best with a guide.
Must visit to see piece of stories related to the group who support the creation of Israel.
For me it is chaotic. No map of the site, very little explanation...
Great historic place.Has real chamber
Amazingly interesting museum telling the story of the Jewish warriors encarcerated and excecuted by British forces prior to Israels War of Independance.
Very interesting. Great tour guides
Historical and heritage site. used to be a british prison that holds the hebrew underground prisoners just before the rising of the state of Israel .the building is Crusader fortress.
One of the most underrated museums in Israel.
is an Ottoman fortification, built on the foundation of the Hospitaller citadel. The citadel was part of the citys defensive formation, reinforcing the northern wall. During the 20th century the citadel was used mainly as a prison and as the site for a gallows. During the British mandate period, activists of Jewish Zionist resistance movements were held prisoner there; several were executed there. The Irgun staged a famous prison break against the citadel in May 1947, which is commemorated by a monument nearby. Famous characters like Bahaullah and Israels prime minister Menachem Begin used to be locked there. Today the site is managed by the Ministry of Defense, so bring your passport if you plan to visit.
Very interesting place, love it!
IF you come alone they will NOT offer you the headset, which means youll be walking around seeing these screens (theres a hidden switch near each screen hidden under a clear plastic lid to turn on the moviesbut wont HEAR anything.... and they will NOT give you headsets (language specific audiowhich they will not offer to you UNLESS youre in a tour... HIGHLY irritating. That and the military owns it, so youll NEED your passport with you to get in .... AND the museum was 90% arab prisoners and 10% Jews, but theres almost no reference to the arabs. Theres ONE reference to the founder of the Bahai religion, who did time here, but thats it. They NEED to give the headset to everyone, AND they need to talk more about arabs who did time there.
This is a former British prison that was run by the British until the advent of the State of Israel in 1948. They prison was used to incarcerate Jews and Arabs. The focal point of the prison is the Jews who were incarcerated for fighting and resisting the British. Many were hanged here as well. It is a very interesting museum with well though and executed exhibits. Make sure you have your passport with you because you need to show it to get in. Why? I really dont now. Fortunately we travelled with our passports on us. Some people did not have theirs and were not admitted. I also saw a couple who had photocopies of their passports but they were not admitted either. You need your actual passport.
Its a British prison that was turned into a mueseum , they talk about history back in 1920s and 30s , but act as if only jewish people were imprisoned they neglect the arabs and the palestinans completely, not giving them any history, a muesum should not have political agendas and unfortunately this one has, they even give visitors the option to watch a short film about how herioc the jewish prisoners were. All in all good preservation of the cells, and rooms but other than that you would have to build your own side of the story the moment your step in.
Ticket all in is not really all in, it does not include this establishment. Furthermore they requested passports. Our passports were in hotel safe, we had just copies, but it was not enough for them. They fully deserve lowest possible score, too bad I cannot give them zero.
Wonderful interactive exhibit, make sure to sign up for a tour (comes at no additional cost, but you must call and sign up ahead of time). The tour guide will walk you through the rooms and play short fictional clips depicting life in the prison before the establishment of Israel. Very captivating and well done! The videos are in Hebrew, but earphones with English dubbing are available at no additional cost.
An important monument to a piece of Israel history during the period of the British Mandate. However, while all major signs are in English, not all are translated. Tours available
Always my first stop when showing people Akko/Acre. To show how the Jews yearned for 2000 yrs to return .
There is no parking near by.
Super!
Must visit. Make sure to arrive at opening hours. Better ring in advance
Great place to visit . Make sure to watch the "Exodus" movie starring Paul Newman before coming here. :)
This is a wonderful experience to visit the museum it is so full of our history & our heros against the British the staff here are very knowledgeable & its no bother to them to answer any questions you may have.i Recomend this to all the families in Israel to visit with their children..also tourists in English they haveearphones in French English & Hebrew if you dont need a guide. Its a wonderful day out.
Hands down, this is the best historical museum in Israel. Friendly staff, interesting A/V tour, nice views of the old city.
What a place. Could not ever imagine being there3.
Very informative museum, best done with a tour guide who can let you know about the famous prisoners and prison break
Esoteric and detailed look at a moment in Israels founding.
Pretty nice, was for free and showed a lot of history.
Learn what the British did to the Jewish freedom fighters.
Nice visit in Akko. Much to learn and easy to navigate
Distorted history, nothing much really going on there.
Actually it is one of most intriguing things i see in acre lately. In fact i didnt know about it. Somehow there is no advertising of this place. The place is former British prison where many zionist were prosecuted. Prison is upper floors of crusader castle so it is builded in very interesting way. Entrance is actually very cheap only 15 shekels.
Very interesting but also very sad
OK, but not a must see. You will get to see a prison in the 40s of the last century. They added some puppets to present more than just empty chairs and desks, but unless you have a knack for prisons, morbid history or the Jewish fight against the British protectorate over Palestine there is no reason to pay for the entrance to this little museum. It does come with its own parking space though, so you dont have to walk to this place.
Visit this place after knowing the historical importance.
must visited. they made it interesting for any age
very interesting, educative museum
מקום מרשים. חוויה למבוגרים וילדים. כולל סיור (צריך להזמין מראש הדרכה סרטונים והמחשה. יש אוזניות שמע לקטעים השונים.Very impressive and moving experience. Includes a guided tour (need to order in advance), movies illustrating the period and prison life. Good for grown-ups and kids as well
The place has new descriptions on everything (also in Englishand it was very interesting (it will be perfect for those who are into the Zionist movement )
Very interesting
Beautiful architecture and fascinating history.
