Classical Renaissance-style setting for displays on art, furniture, ceramics, costume and industry.
What a great museum for art - wide variety for sale at the RUA and charming tour by Denise Ferran. Amazing fossils and 1870 onward gallery and a section on The Troubles. Nice gift shop and lovely staff.
Have been there a couple of times for a game of thrones exhibition. The tapestry on show was a monumental work of art.Show much history on display elsewhere and even learned some interesting history about my home county of Tír Chonaill.Totally worth a visit.
Very good place to spend the afternoon, learn about the history or Northern Ireland including geology political divide and how the place has developed over the years for free,
Great Museum, plenty to look at and a lot of different types of items to look at. Can take a long time if you read all of the information. Very clean and well kept.
A fantastic museum, something everyone from the city should visit. Have fond memories of going with my granda when younger. The art by local artists is superb, and the history of the troubles in NI has some great memorabilia while being very informative.
I spent 2.5 hours here, but more time would be even better. A very good museum, plus art gallery with many Irish works. Museum exhibits cover prehistoric times through to The Troubles. Plus rocks & minerals, natural history, and an especially good section about chemistry called The Elements. Easy to visit: just drop in, no booking needed, it’s free (donations welcome).
Ulster Museum is actually the national museum of north Ireland..it is pretty close to queen’s university Belfast. The Brutalist building itself impressed me. The style makes use of exposed, unpainted concrete and brick, having angular geometric shapes and grey colour, and it has a lovely cafe inside. But the interesting point is that the building itself has two different parts one is more brutalist, and the other is like the traditional style. What a mix! When you get inside, The main room is pretty open. And there aren’t many people inside. where you can start from the top and uses the one-way system to go around Northern Island’s gallery, artworks to its nature and history. (It isn’t too much, but enough for an hours visit). Most of the items are interactive, and the presented texts are easy to read.Personally, I really like the timeline design to mark down big events in this state. I have seen something similar in Museum of London. It tells the history. Moreover, What I like is the two drawings, one is about the German Army booming the city, and his wife is watching them. I was surprised by how big the room they have, and also I admire the artists courage to paint this intensive situation… If it were me, then I would definitely run away.Overall it is a perfect place for tourists and families, and it is free.
Excellent museum to visit while in Belfast, with free entry (donation suggested). Could easily spend a number of hours wandering the many floors, learning about the history of Ireland, archaeology, the Troubles, the periodic table, radioactive glass, pottery, art, the ancient Egyptians and diamonds. And probably lots more! Highly recommend taking the time to explore this museum.
Worth checking out!Has some cool exhibits and you can easily spend 2-3 hours here.Highly recommend!
We went to visit the excellent Botanical Gardens and ended spending nearly 4 hours there and in the Museum. Some really good local painters on the top floor, a superb GoT tapestry, and a very good summary of the history of the troubles. And a lovely cafe.
We went early in the day which was great for adults, quite, very educational about The Troubles. Later in the day local families came with kids, its extremely family friendly and would be a great place to being Littles if youre traveling with kids. Cafe was decent, but quite a wait. People were super kind.
Beautiful well presented museum currently housing the huge Game of Thrones Tapestry, friendly knowledgeable staff make the experience even more enjoyable along with a diverse & well displayed assortment of artefacts along with the infamous Deadly Dragons
Surprisingly good museum with a large and varied collection?! Other than everything being in reverse chronological order when you take what appears to be the normal route from the entrance, everythings great!
The entrance is through the park. Museum entrance is free. It is a museum of art, history and nature. The best way to navigate through the museum is to take the elevator to top floor (5thand then slowly make your way down.
Loved our visit to the Ulster Museum. Highly recommend. If time permits drop into the Ravine and Hot House.
Fantastic museum. Staff very friendly. Loads to see and interact with. Definitely a must to visit.
Beautiful museum. Great cafe. Lovely shop. Great location. You could easily spend a day here.
The absolute BEST geology exhibit Ive ever seen, the chemistry area has a FULL periodic table WITH ELEMENTS and they have a room full of UV reactive minerals with blacklight making them glow! Id honestly come back here regularly if I didnt live a plane fly away!!!
Amazing museum set in the Botanic gardens. Artifacts from prehistory through the ages to modern. I particularly liked the Game of thrones tapestry, incredible sewing. Free entry, lifts, children friendly, good toilets
Great place, game of thrones tapestry, loads of items on display, well thought out and free. Enjoyed it more than a the titanic museum.
Theres a lot of great things in this museum and I recommend you to visit it yourself, mostly with the fact that its free.
Wow this was an amazing museum. Needs more than 1 visit, we will definitely go back. The mineral section alone was fantastic. The staff were helpful and friendly and we were able to store bags there as we looked round.
We are on a cruise so day in Belfast only.First priority was the Titanic exhibition and then our friends took us to Ulster museum (free entryto see The Game of Thrones tapestry- amazing. We will return to see the rest of the museum as it looked really good - glimpses of dragons and a triceratops!
We had a nice family time at this museum. We were sometimes a bit lost by what was genuine or cast, but as a whole it opened lots of discussions with the kids. By the way it is free, but worth a donation!
Great museum, loads to see. All the exhibits are presented very well. The Thrones tapestry is brilliant even if you didnt watch the programme. Nice cafe. Very helpful staff
It was a nice experience and was blown away by seeing a Srilankan artifact first.. they have created a good history ..
The best museum Ive ever visited & free! The staff are lovely, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The exhibits are amazing, especially the game of thrones tapestry. You could spend a whole day in there and not be bored. Would definitely visit again and recommend to anyone.
Far better than Id feared. The history galleries are, understandably, given prominence but I really enjoyed the art galleries. The former Lecture Theatre converted into a cinema is an excellent use of the space which has had its architectural details preserved. Too much to see on just one visit.
There are 5 floors with different exhibitions, about absolutely everything. It’s one of the must-see spots in Belfast. Its free but please do not leave without making a donation. The experience the museum offers is worth at least £5. 😉 Theres also a gift shop and a coffee shop. And also very cleaning bathrooms! AMAZING!
Brilliant range of local history going from the geological formation of the land up to the troubles. We only had time to look at the history but it was clear that they also have great science and art displays. Easy to navigate through and the staff are helpful and friendly. Very clean and safe environment with plenty of toilets. Situated in the very pleasant botanical gardens.
Great couple of hours here with the kids. Lots to see and interactive elements that kept all the kids entertained.Would definitely recommend heading here especially if the weather isnt great because its all inside.
What a museum, everything any visitor would want to see in Belfast from the Derry Girls school chalk board with the differences between Catholics & Protestants to stories about the troubles or the local history of Belfast. The brutal list design of the museum is great, my favourite, lots of concrete and no windows, a great contrast to the traditional original museum. Lots for kids and adults to take part in, fossils, a Mummy plus many interesting facts about the world we live in. Head to the fantastic Maggie Mays restaurant across the road for an all day Irish breakfast but save space for an ice cream or milkshake afterwards. Me a d 5No friends spent a good 3-4hours there, start at the top 5th floor and work down to ground. There is more to see on each level, give yourself time to enjoy the history of the place.
Great experience! Provides amazing insight into the history of not just Ireland but other aspects of our worlds history, such as, the Ice Age, Dinosaur/Jurassic period and marine life! Definitely worth a visit!
Ive loved this place from I was a young girl. Now Im taking my children. Whom also love it. Everytime you go you notice something different. Staff so friendly. Definitely worth spending a few hours here.
Great place to take the kids (or notand enjoy admission free day at this great Museum. You can easily spend the day here and top floor (level5has a Kids zone for craft work and dressing up. (Note: closed between 1-2pm for lunch). Gift shop and restaurant on btm floor.
Located inside the Botanic Gardens this is a quaint little museum. It is free to visit. It has small varied exhibitions about history and science. Very well spent time.
Gorgeous artifacts and art. Obviously, great spot for Game of Thrones fans. I was actually expecting more from this museum... Its lacking some interactions to enhance the items
Very enlightening and enjoyable experience. The game of thrones props are incredible and the staff was friendly and making sure that not too many people are entering the exhibition at once. You can easily book a ticket online but you might want to do it a little in advance. The exhibitions range from nature and animals to local history and even art.
Its free, just go!!! Not too close to the city centre but is definitely worth the visit! Spent 4 hours there and couldnt see it all, Ill have to go back!Great museum, enormous, loads of interesting things to see!
There are many exhibits and they are completely free to the public. It is worth spending half a day to visit. There are some exhibits about Game of Thrones. If you are interested in the history of Northern Ireland, it is highly recommended.
One of the best museums I have visited. Packed with years of history. The layout of the building is the best! Allows for easy movement from one section to the other! A must visit if you’re ever in Belfast, a city like no other in the UK!
Not so big like London museums but I like it and have a lot of good historical .......I recommend it 👌
Great experience, really love this museum, relaxed atmosphere, well organised, really widespread collection with a bit of everything and good facilities like the cafe, shop and toilets. Royal academy of arts exhibition was fantastic. Our now teenage kids and friends enjoyed it too.
Visited around noon a few weeks ago. It was really peaceful and quiet, perfect for a stroll to escape the buzzing city. I was pleasantly surprised by the Christmas decorations and light trail. Even though they werent lit during the day, the decorations were still interesting to look at! The Ulster Museum is also located near the main entrance of the gardens.
A great place to spend a few hours. Very clean and family-friendly museum. The top floor currently has a gallery full of amazing art work by young aspiring artists. Check it out if you are in town. They also have a gift shop on the ground floor with lots of cute stuff!
It was amazing. We arrived late because we forgot to go but the staff still allowed us to get in which was really nice. So here we are starting the tour following the yellow line which get you through the history of Ulster from all different eras. The troubles are well documented. I loved the punk scene. There are dinosaurs, fossils, canons, gold coins, a mummy well whatever you or the kids want to see is there. Please it is important to give some money to the museum because they are not funded by the state. It is free but do not take it for granted. It is also on the Belfast sightseeing tour so you can hop off there at the botanic gardens and hop back in to finish the tour through the Falls and Shankill roads. So enjoy. Its one of the best museums ever.
A dander around Botanic Gardens led to a cafe trip in the museum and a potter around the shop. The cafe is great but service is slow. It’s managed by a social enterprise, Loaf Catering, who work with people with learning difficulties and autism. The food is great and the prices are decent for what you get. There’s plenty of space in the cafe and some seating has views over Botanic Gardens. The shop is crammed full of all manner of things: books, postcards, jewellery, ceramics, toys, stationery, scarves, Christmas gifts and crafts. You could spend ages looking around. Tickets to the museum itself are free but you need to book them online due to COVID so there was a queue for people wanting to visit it. Parking isn’t great. You just have to hunt around the nearby streets.
Amazing place. Easy to find, a very large museum, it is possible to move away to the old past and find yourself in the present. Learn the history of things, animals, birds. Irish history.
A beautiful and interesting museum with extensive collection. It is located near botanical gardens and queens university and very easily accessible through public transport. The entry to the museum is free with an advance booked slot. A curious mind can easily spend whole day exploring the museum. It covered a lot of local history, arts, geology, botany, wildlife etc etc.All the covid protocols were followed with sanitizer etc available throughout the premises.Loved our visit.
Plenty to see for different kind of interests. It was a bit confusing at times what way to walk through exhibition to follow correct time line but it was still interesting and very informative. Limited numbers are let in and hand sanitizers available so it felt safe enough. And its free (cant beat thatbut there are donation boxes throughout the museum so you can decide how much the visit was worth.
