19th-century buildings, with recreators in period dress, plus festivals, courses and workshops.
A lot to see and do has a good range of interesting exhibits to look at and explore I found the folk side to be much more interesting and it has local crafts on display I found the tearoom selection of food a bit limited and also a bit overpriced but on the whole a good way to spend a day
Excellent halfday in stimulating outdoor environment where the past is made tangible and visible. Relaxing and educational.
Really good museum. Learned a lot about the local history of northern Ireland. And it was a beautiful day out.
What a fantastic place! We recieved a warm greeting from the get-go, and all the staff were very friendly and informative (especially the lovely gentleman in the photograph shop). It was a great insight into history and rural life, and we would totally visit again! There are facilities available throughout, and it was easily accessible via taxi or bus - its a steep treck up to the entrance though, so its good to be aware of this.
The best place if you love old culture. The design with nature is awesome. I enjoyed coutry side more than town in this musseum.
Fantastic, well worth it, spent 6 hours here, even the rain didnt put us off. Very informative about early Irish settlement but fun too with the costumed characters around the place. Loved the peat fires burning. Great little cafe too for refreshments.
Great place but tickets used to include transport museum
Took Grandson here for a day out which he did enjoy but not a very child friendly place as twice he managed to walk into the clear screens that were at his level so he didnt actually realise they were there. Disappointed that you now have to pay to go into both parts so can work out rather pricey if a few people go together. Enjoyed seeing all the old cars etc but not a lot has changed from the last time I was there approx. 10 years ago.
A great day out. Leave yourself plenty of time to take in the whole atmosphere. People dressed up in olde time costumes and explains about how things were done in the “olden” days. A great learning experience for young people.
A walk down memory lane, I especially liked the knowledgeable townsfolk who filled us in on the history of the buildings, and the way of life...
Outstanding museum, we visited on a quiet day and were engaged in long entertaining chats first in the print shop, drapers, hardware store, Doc Martin in the dispensary was superb, dryamusing and able to diagnose 1910 treatment for modern complaints. Great tea room as well. Fascinating displays that demonstrate how quickly time passes. A top day out.
Great experience and lovely people there to tell the historic stories. We really enjoyed walking around there. Great tea rooms. Lovely day out.
Decided to have a family day out here. Very pleasant place with friendly staff. The parking is free if you are visiting the attraction. There are toilets on site, at various locations. Food is available at the venue, or there are picnic tables at various locations. There are lots of buildings you can access and several interactive areas with staff in costumes. Please note that not all interactive activities are on all the time. We booked on line before our visit, which meant access was very quick. Good family day out.
Now have to pay separate for the folk and transport museum (£21 for an adult!?). Used to be a good day out to both for a reasonable price but its just a total rip off now. Really disappointing! £9.90 into a a few rooms with trains and cars in them is a joke. Wont be surprised to see both locations struggle to attract any visitors.
A great family day out! You wouldn’t think you were anywhere near NI’s capital, Belfast. Quiet rural walks within short driving distance of Belfast. Living history characters walking around brings visit to life. Kids loved this. Really helps you better understand and appreciate the lives our grandparents lived. Nostalgic for those of us in our late 30’s early 40’s as we can remember our grandparents stories from their own lives as kids. Oh, and the smells!!! Brought back wonderful memories.Great hands-on experience with the added treat of an authentic old sweet shop to keep the kids engaged until the end of the day out. Good gift shop, even if it is a little overpriced and a very good cafe.We would definitely visit again. Good free parking.
Absolutely awesome – beautifully reconstructed historical buildings, gorgeous countryside walk, and knowledgeable craftspeople demonstrating a range of crafts using period equipment. Plenty of toilet facilities, a nice cafe and friendly staff throughout.
A really great place for a day out. The Ballycultra village is full of interesting buildings from bygone times and informative stuff on boards and from enthusiastic volunteers. Sweet shop and cafe but we brought a picnic and sat at one of the benches. The country walk to visit cottages, crofts, farm buildings, a school house and more is a lovely, not too challenging walk among lovely scenery. Highly recommended for visitors to NI and locals too Must try and go more often 😊
Does what it says on the tin. Great place to get a glimpse at a different era. Well maintained and a lovely way to approach it all. Instead of everything being crammed into the smallest possible space, you enjoy a serene walk as you explore the different buildings and jobs.
Staff very friendly. A lot of things to see.Very impressive. A lovely museum.I suggest a lot 👍👍👍☺️😎🇬🇧
Great visit to see historical buildings, machineries and dwellings that life long before will tell a story.
Perfect place to spend the day. Lovely staff. You can learn a lot of the old times.
An extensive comprehensive collection not to be missed on a visit to Belfast. Friendly staff and guides with a wealth of knowledge.
great Museum to see with all the family, an improvement could be to put brighter lights at the end of the Delorean show, to have the time to take better photos.
Loved this place as a child and now as an adult bringing my own children. Amazing place super friendly staff and so much more has been added over the years. Wonderful day out and an ideal spot to go to on a Summers day
Nice day out , walking shoes or trainers as its a fair old stroll around . See how people lived a 100+ years ago, lots of houses & churches, a smattering of shops, court house, printshop, basket weaver, police station, pub, spademill and forge (theres gonna be more Ive forgotten... all in a rural village setting with lanes surrounded by small fields, orchards , hedges and trees.
Absolutely fabulous. This museum brought to life my understanding of how my ancestors lived. The guides are so knowledgeable, I love history and hearing the details was great. They are all experts at bringing you into that time and place.
Fantastic, needs a whole day to get round it, the blacksmith was amazing. More people need to take up this trade. The Dr. Giving his story while your in his surgery is an added bonus, the lady who made the soda bread in the Manor, well what can I say but thankyou so much, explaining how the buildings were moved to their new home is an insight that people should know about. This should be taught in every single school and every year. Its history that needs to be brought back. No computers, or tvs, no electricity. Will be back to finish the rest of the grounds off, couldnt complete it all today.
Was visiting to attend a great workshop on the Irish Peach with access to the museum included. A stunning setting of mainly original buildings holding and telling incredible stories and occupied by some outstanding artisans.
An excellent museum. It is on a large site and you can walk the streets and lanes au natural. The building are in fantastic condition and full of memories of the people who once lived in them. In addition there are farmsteads and livestock. We had a fabulous 3.5 hours there plus tea and cake at the cafe. The staff and volunteers are all very welcoming and full of interesting facts. A great place.
Really great day out for the family! So much to see and a trip into how things were. So many great guides bringing the places to life. Its very big and so much to, read and take in.
Great place to visit in dry weather. Lots to see and room for children to run around. Friendly and engaging staff explained how people lived years ago at the various houses. Dont forget to visit the sweet shop !
The ulster folk and transport museum is one of the best outings in Northern Ireland. Mixing education with history and a lot of fun. Recommended for the whole family. Something for everyone to enjoy. Covid 19 safety precautions followed.
Very enjoyable day out for all the family. Had 89 year old, 70 year old, 50, 40, right down to 2 and 3 year olds. All enjoyed the day.
Had a fantastic day my family. My sister is visiting with her husband and their wee son whom have yet to get a proper taste of the NI culture. Everyone had a blast. The museum is super sweet and has many old timey shops and building which have staff who dress for the times and give indepth info on how things used to be. Unfortunately they were limited to staff as Covid 19 is still high at the moment, but I remember from my younger days how great this used to be, hopefully it can get back to normal soon 😁😁I particularly liked the sweet shop 😁😁😁 we all bought a wee bag of yummies there. Also the cafe was handy, I totally forgot to buy a rasberry ruffle tray bake before I left 😪 oopsy 😋We accidently picked a day with a tractor judging competition on 😂 which only added to the good vib of the place. One super sweet and very personal touch to the day was, our great great grannies home was one of the houses on Tea Street which was moved brick by brick from Sandy Row to the Folk Museum, a house in which our granny - whom recently passed away - grew up in. We were un-sure which house it was but they were more than happy to help us investigate and eventually find out which one it was, it added a whole new level of joyous emotion for my sister and brother and I 😀 which we are eternatlly greatful for 😁😁
Fantastic day out with the kids.. Definitely recommend going early and less busy and have more time to look around... The town is so well kept and the workers add the experience buy explaining how things happened in the past.. Once leaving the town its a lovely walk around to visit the remaining houses... Different farm houses have different animals, the 1st chickens, 2nd was pig, at the time of our visit the pig had just had 15 piglets 3 days prior so was class to see them, and the 3rd and final farm house had horses and donkeys. Plenty of locations to have picnics and even have a cafe if one of the old buildings, a sweet shop aswell which you can get a quarter of your favourite sweets for £2, card accepted which is handy.. Plenty to keep kids interested and intertained during the day. We arrived at 10am and left just before 2 and as we where leaving It was extremely busy.
My friend & I enjoyed strolling around for several hours on a beautiful day. Having people in period costume using the equipment, demonstrating trades, and interacting with us made it a fun immersive experience for adults as well as kids. I was especially surprised to learn how recently some of the homes were occupied before becoming part of the museum.
Went to the Ulster Folk Museum with my daughters and grandchildren. The children had a fantastic day. We ate a picnic and explored the town. It was a great way for them to experience what it was like to live years ago. We then went around the country walk and it was most enjoyable as the children were allowed to stroke the horses and donkeys and the lady who looked after them was very friendly and the children liked her as well as the adults. We then went on around the walk and met another lovely lady who was taking care of one of the other houses. The children loved having a conversation with her and she was very good with them. Lots of patience as the oldest child was only six. Enjoyed our day immensely so would highly recommend it. All the usual rules and regulations for covid were adhered to .
This is the perfect place to step back in history. The houses are all lovely set out with items in them and the fires are lit in them sometimes as well with the smell of peat filling the air. They have people in the some of the houses at times telling you about them and doing demonstrations, from baking to weaving. We had a lovely chat today with Pamela and Gillian up around the farm area. there are lots of toilets situated around the site, so little ones wont get caught short. The wee tea room is lovely and the cake slices are really nice. I couldnt recommend this place more. Even with all the measures they have had to put in place it was a fantastic day out.
Absolutely amazing experience. Kids learned a lot from nice and very helpful staff. Only thing got food in cafeteria was served till 3pm so we missed it.
So many walk paths, a lot of interesting buildings. Very nice staff. 4 stars couse not everything could be seen (covid19).
Lovely look back in history. Very friendly cast members helping you have a great experience. Children and adults encouraged to ask questions about the demonstrations such as weaving. Basket making, blacksmith. Lots of animals to see. Many buildings to visit showing life as it was years ago.
Stepping back in time requires a time machine or a breathtaking folk park just like this one! Located beautifully near the shores of Belfast Lough, you can experience decades and centuries of culture that developed throughout the years. Whilst having a look at the different buildings and former housing facilities you can also take a glimpse at how people used to work. Bring your kids! Animals such as donkeys, two lovely horses, pigs, cows and goats can be found here along with a fair number of chickens. If you come here please make sure to spend at least four hours to fully experience the wide variety of lifes essentials as they were hundreds of years ago. If youre visiting during Covid-times please note that many buildings cant be looked at and only a small amount of people can enter shops. Furthermore you cant really walk around as you like anymore. A strict route was established by the staff, which should be taken or else you will get told off. Anyway my day here was great I will always want to return and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the history and culture of this great country.
Fantastic day trip. Take your time and really enjoy the history and culture they have preserved. Also be sure to hit the shops, some lovely treats offered.
It was a long time since we have been here and have to say it was fantastic. This place is a great day out and I would recommend getting here at opening time as we ran out of time and did not get to see it all. The staff onsite are extremely friendly and interact with the kids to make the visit more enjoyable. We also had a light lunch in the restaurant and was also very pleased with it.
Always love a visit to the Folk Museum. Allow 3 hours for the full experience. Its very interesting, with real life guides and most of the buildings are original, painstakingly transported from their original location. Dont miss it
This place is an absolutely amazing insight into times gone by. Great way to look back into the history and of Irish culture and how things were back in the day!! Museum is really well put together and comes reasonably priced with a great wee map to help you see it all. Also need to mention the staff who help reenact the past with their great costumes and vast knowledge.....great day out thanks to all!!!!Only downside and reason for a four star rating and not a five is I was with someone in a wheelchair and found parts of the museum unapproachable for them! This isnt due to the buildings its more the difficult descents getting to some of them.
Loved coming here for donkey day. Brilliant event and theres so much to do here. Tickets are reasonable considering how long you spend walking the grounds and any staff I came across were really friendly and informative.
Beautiful place to visit and walk around.. Theres also a free transport ride around some of the area which lasts upto 10minutes..ice cream cone was value for money at £2.. However £4 for a sausage roll was pretty shocking today the least.. £1 for a Mars bar or snickers.. If going to the folk museum best to prepare and take food with you.. This way you will save money.. You can easily spend the day there walking around the place..
You can walk around the village and see how people from different social class lived in the past (1600-1950). The country village has been completely reconstructed outside Belfast, with its little church and arts and crafts shops. Good visit for a family day out
amazing place. full of history. staff are in character. staff are friendly and willing to share their history and knowledge. i was lucky enough to try out the blacksmithing area. got to use the belows and hit some hot steel. seen printing process, weaving and the doctor needs a special mention. never broke character in the 15 -20 minute interaction. brilliant day
