Plenty of animals we dont get to see back home. We skipped the panda viewing because of the insanely long 1hr+ queue. I do hope that they will build bigger enclosures for the big birds. Seeing the eagles, vultures, and hawks stuck in a tiny cages is heartbreaking. Theyre meant to soar!

Came here in autumn 2022 around mid-afternoon to find that the entry fee was wildly inexpensive, which is a plus - adults are ¥600. However, upon entry, the site was underwhelming at best, concerning at worst. The queue to see the pandas was closed from 3.30pm due to the length of it - the wait was at least an hour, and we decided that it absolutely wasn’t worth it when there were other animals to see. However, I wish we hadn’t - the enclosures looked too small and unkempt to house the animals - prime examples of this were the polar bears, who looked scruffy and underweight, and the tiger. The creatures were pacing and panting, looking very stressed. Other animals looked bored and unstimulated, and some enclosures seemed overcrowded (the colobus monkeys are an example of this). Other visitors seemed to not notice the glaring lack of care, and seemed to be more bothered about how cute the animals wereThe tea house and the pagoda were both beautiful, but it would be even better if the zoo could afford the same care, respect and reverence for the animals they house.I’m ambivalent about zoos, but support the conservation efforts some provide. However, there was little evidence of this on show - I would avoid this zoo unless you’re able to look past the animals’ boredom.

I was super happy to see the pandas. We were surprised to see the vast collection of animals they have. The zoo has nice vibes and nice to walk around.

Old style zoo. Plenty of animals that are easy to see. Unless you are going to see a panda you shouldnt have to queue anywhere most days.

Ueno zoo is famous for Panda🐼🐼.zoo is small which can be covered withing 3 hours. zoo has all the animals almost, good for kids. Presence of Panda makes this zoo unique in Japan because there are no panda in Japan other than Ueno zoo.If you love Panda pay a visit to this zoo. Book ticket in advance for this zoo.

not enough equipments for animals. Lots of animals have stereotypic behavior. pathetic animals and irresponsible management. this is not a good place to feel the nature because everything you can see have been twisted by absurd managing.Don’t just try hard to please human, pay more effort to improve the environment of animals. We don’t want kids to recognize animals and have that image of them with mentality disease.environment enrichment is seriously in need.

There were a few restaurants offering shaved ice, finger snacks and lunch menu. There were lots of benches to take a break from all the walking! Our kiddos are a little too old to appreciate animal-seeing but they had lots of fun choosing their plushies: so many cute and fluffy ones to choose from. There were a few exhibits which we find interesting: Small Mammals Center, Amphibians House, Birds Aviary, different kinds of monkeys, flying foxes hanging upside side, a giant freshwater crocodile, polar bears, Panda, sun bears and brown bears 🐻‍❄️🐼🐻 , skulls comparison between the gorillas, humans and chimpanzees, skulls of different kinds of Tigers and the anatomy of elephants. It was not as sunny as expected due to the incoming typhoon No. 8. Weather was erratic with occasional showers but all in all, its a good place to spend half a day.

A big zoo! Ticket prices only say 600 yen but if you want, you can get an annual pass for 2,400 at the gate. Panda viewing requires you to book a couple of weeks in advance and it is a lottery so there is a chance you cant see them. The food inside is expensive (770 yen for a curry plate, 500 yen for yakisobaand taste was so-so. I would have just gotten an onigiri from a convenience store and taken it in.

The positive side : the zoo is located in central Tokyo which is very easy to get to.However, I visited there at 2:30PM, and there are so many kinds of animal that are off-display from 3:00-4:00PM. I have to say it’s very disappointed that the most kinds of animals I saw in the zoo are birds and birds as if I went to the bird park. No bears, no tigers, no gorillas, no polar bears, no crocodiles……If you need to cleanup and put animals back at least you should put some notice for visitors to know or I don’t know what’s the meaning to open till 5:00PM.

Well priced entry for the zoo, most enclosures were small and not well enriched for the larger animals, unfortunately due to covid and the current weather a majority of the smaller animal exhibits were closed. Wouldnt recommend visiting at the moment. I hope the zoo upgrades its enclosures in the near future for the wellbeing of their animals.

I went there to see the Shoebill storks🥰 They have fantastic personalities. Due to the restrictions, you can book a ticket online through a gacha-system, two times/month. You have to be lucky! Check the Zoos website to access the page to make your ticket reservation. The Zoo is the most amazing one I ever visited. One day however is a very short time to see everything. I recommend booking multiple times in advance.

It looks great at the first, but soon enough you will notice that almost all animals look sick, or not get enough care?! I didnt take any bear 🐻 zone picture because they all look very sad 😢 Please take a good look at those 🐻🐻🐻, you will get tears in the eyes 😢The pizza I ordered was way to dark, and there is no way for me to exchange a new one because no one speaks English here!Sad experience. 😭Price: 💰💰Food: 🥲Envr.: 🥲

Went there in September 2015 so it has been a while but it can also be food to see what has evolved since then.I do avoid zoos since I have been to this one and for several reasons. The entry was 6 euros at the time, which was kind of shocking to me -until I realized literally everything inside has to be paid for so it made more sense. The decorations and landscapes inside the zoos are breathtaking, I think this is the part I enjoyed the most our of everything. I truly hope these are still here today. But then one memory that is still burning in my brain is the one of the polar bear, obviously underweight and bored, with distressing behaviour. People were hitting the window and stressing him out even more. I hope by now the polar bear is not here anymore or better taken care of.There are so many more things to do and discover in Tokyo 💙

The most famous & family friendly zoo in Tokyo area. Its reasonable fee, 600 yen for adult and free of charge for the children whos age is under 13, is also attractive factor. Strongly recommend bring a lunch box(a bento)as a restaurant & a food is limited, furthermore its kinda pricey.

Worth visiting to see the pandas, outside of that it’s no different to any other zoo and I’m not too keen on the idea of keeping these animals in captivity where there isn’t a conservationist justification for it as there is with the pandas in this context.Bear in mind if you are visiting to see the pandas, there is generally quite a large queue and you only get a fixed amount of time to walk through the viewing area of their enclosure so be prepared for that.

The most popular zoo in the Tokyo area, and famous for its panda enclosure. If possible, go on a weekday or off season for a stress free chance to see everything at your leisure. During weekends, national holidays and summer months it can be almost impossible to see the pandas due to very long lines. The size of the zoo and variety of animals is surprisingly expansive for being in the urban center of Tokyo. Minus one star because some animals enclosures are a bit small and lacking of foliage while others have vast expanses of space.

The Ueno Zoo (恩賜上野動物園, Onshi Ueno Dōbutsuenis a 14.3-hectare (35-acrezoo, managed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and located in Taitō, Tokyo, Japan. It is Japans oldest zoo, opening on March 20, 1882. It is a five-minute walk from the Park Exit of Ueno Station, with convenient access from Tokyos public-transportation network. The Ueno Zoo Monorail, the first monorail in the country, connects the eastern and western parts of the grounds. The zoo started life as a menagerie attached to the National Museum of Natural History. In 1881, responsibility for this menagerie was handed to naturalist and civil servant Tanaka Yoshio, who oversaw its transition into a public zoo.[3] The ground was originally estate of the imperial family, but was bestowed (恩賜, onshi, forming the first part of the name in Japanese, untranslated officiallyto the municipal government in 1924 — along with Ueno Park — on the occasion of crown prince Hirohitos wedding.

We thoroughly enjoyed this zoo on our visit to Japan. I loved the way the zoo was set-up and the animal enclosures were cool too. The tickets are cheap and we spent a good portion of the day here. We were in line just before the zoo opened and we headed straight to the line for the Pandas once we were in, totally worth it! The food was also pretty good, I would definitely visit this zoo again.

A good place to visit for a day. You can complete the entire zoo in roughly 3-4 hours. It is very well connected. Please do not follow Google maps as the entry to zoo has been only through main gate due to the Covid 19. Refer the website for the correct entry gate. There are lot of exotic animals in the zoo. Giant Panda, Red panda, polar bear, seal and penguin are the few collection that cannot be seen in many zoos. You cannot click photographs of the panda if they are not playing in the park or put in the glass exhibit. Many exhibit may remain close so refer the website before visiting. There are lot of vulnerable birds also. Please ensure that you do not feed any animals or disturb them. Hopefully enjoy your day and do not forget to take your kids with you.

Nice public zoo at the center of Tokyo city.Access can never be a problem for this place.Overall it was a good experience. Probably it is the only place near my residence where I can find a Chinese Panda. My kid really lived watching them play but since it was crowded back then when I visited we could hardly stay and enjoy Panda’s activity, so little bit disappointed on that.Else, a good picnic spot to spend a day’s time. Food court is good.Zoo is divided into West and East sections. We especially loved the west section with lots of reptiles and other asia-pacific animals.I recommend this to visit on a cloudy day otherwise it will be really hard to walk through the zoo.

Great zoo with lots to see. The giant panda exhibit is fun, and the tigers, gorillas, and bears are always exciting to see up close. Compared to American zoos it is extremely affordable both in entry price and in-park food & gift shops. Some of the bigger African exhibits close earlier than the rest of the park, so make sure to hit those early in the day if you want to see Giraffes, Elephants, Rhinos or others.

There are some nice animal exhibits here and it was a good was to kill time for 2 hours before our train. However, its was disappointing that there were huge lines to see the panda which meant that we missed out. There are also a lot of enclosures shut at this time. The monorail was also closed. The zoo is quite big so be prepared for some walking while the monorail is shut.

Really nice place, we went in February in the afternoon and there wasnt a lot of people so walking around isnt an issue. The Pandas where obviously the main attraction and there still was a little wait time to see them. I wouldnt recommend to go during high season because youll probably have to wait hours to see them.

All-in-all it was a good zoo and a great experience (especially at ¥600). Its a good size but one can complete it writing 90 minutes, which is good so one can make multiple rounds or check back on previously inactive animals. The one thing keeping it from a 5 star experience is that many of the exhibits are just too small. They used vertical space well, but there were many cases where a cage could easily be expanded to allow the animals more space or let them hide if they want. Generally all the animals seemed healthy and happy but a few were getting stressed by the end of the day.Generally, though, its a great way to spend the afternoon.

The Ueno zoo is a very nice place to go for a family trip or even for a date, since its not just a zoo, it is also partly a park~ The price is very cheap compared to all the things you can see and do there.(600¥ adult, 200¥ childrenThe zoo also has a panda, who is a main attraction to many visitors, so be prepared to stand in line for a long time to see a panda for a few minutes. Sadly I was very unlucky and waited to 90min just to see a sleeping panda from afar. All in all a very nice place where you can spend a few hours without getting bored~

Decent comprehensive collection of animals well kept here - they even kept many of the African animals like gorillas, giraffes, etc. inside rather than in their outdoor cages due to the recent cold winter of Japan. Too bad I missed them now but hopefully can see them mid next year. P/S: come earlier IF you want to see the giant panda in here. The queue for it can be super long.

Oldest zoo in Japan with many animals exhibits. Nice to walk around and look and learn about the various animals. Some of the enclosures look a bit dated, but there are upgrading works in the zoo so hopefully they are rebuilding better and bigger enclosures for the animals. My son and I hate going to zoo. So, when my husband told us we should visit the zoo while we were in Ueno because the zoo is the oldest one in Tokyo (may be Japan), we just said yes. After visiting the zoo, we were all very impressed. The entrance fee is very cheap. The place is well maintained, very clean. Animals are well fed. We really enjoyed our time in this zoo. It’s not smelly like your typical zoo. This zoo is more like a Japanese garden. Lots of trees every where. The place is huge. If you decide to come here, it’s probably a 3-4hrs (at leastvisit and make sure you wear a comfortable shoes. Lots of uphill walk 😅Highly recommend it!!!!

Japan’s oldest zoo which opened in 1882. This is a reason I have rated more than I felt initially as have to have some perspective in relation to the age and space of the zoo, in regards to rather small enclosures for most of the zoos inhabitants, especially larger animals and reptiles. I felt a little sad, as some of the animals looked a bit sad and just pacing back and forth, but the zoo was clean and there were many school groups there, and well set up for children and families. I did get to see a couple of the adorable pandas.

This zoo is one of a kind. Compared to the Zoos in America you can find some rather exotic animals. We came specifically to see the Panda Bears and weren’t disappointed at all! The line was long, but the way they organize it the staff had it moving quickly! There are many animals to see. Grabbing snacks and a bite to eat are also plentiful. I highly recommend visiting this area of Tokyo and going to the zoo. Pricing for the zoo is very budget friendly! The signs pointing to animals are also done in English so that helped a lot.

We heard that the giant pandas would be returned to China soon, so we decided that we should try to see them while we were in Tokyo. I’ll get to the pandas a little later, but cover the zoo first. The zoo, overall, was a nice place to visit. There were plenty of people, but overall, it was not crowded. There were a lot of animals to see. My favorite was probably the Japanese squirrels. They were very active and so cute. The owls were also interesting, and one spoke while we were watching. Unfortunately my wife didn’t hear it, and the owl wouldn’t repeat itself. Many of the larger animals were feeding while we were there. We never saw the lion, the tiger was waiting to get in to eat, and only one of the elephants was visible. The polar bears were pacing, perhaps bored, or waiting to eat. Overall, the animals did not seem to be engaged or have much to keep them busy. It was still interesting place to stand and watch the animals for a while. As for the pandas... they are pandas, and you don’t get to see them at many zoos. A lot of people came to the zoo only to see the pandas, and the line on the day we went was 30 minutes. Looking at the crowd control, I believe that weekends are likely much longer. One of the three pandas was not out, and the other two pandas were towards the back of their enclosures, and not completely visible. Since there were so many people wanting to see them, there were zoo employees there to verbally push the crowd to continue to continue. For our 30 minute wait, we maybe got to see than pandas for 30-60 seconds between the two before we could no longer see them. I felt like that was not a good use of time, and we could see the pandas better on TV. I’m not sure this is a great place to visit to see pandas, but it is the only place I’ve been that had them.

The zoo is really well maintained, and the animals seemed happy and relaxed. On a good day, youll often see veterans and children alike, enjoying the zoo and the adjoining Ueno park. The polar bear is a must see, but the Giant Panda exhibit is a hit and miss. The wait times for the panda can be 30+ mins long, with only a about a half of minute of viewing time before the guard ushers you away.

Zoo cost $6 USA dollars and to see the baby panda, cost extra and the wait is usually around a half hour to an hour wait...we didnt pay extra and line wait too long just to walk past the panda AND you CANNOT take photos!! Good variation of animals... tickets 600¥.but need to pay extra money to see Big Panda which separately located... if you want to see that guy you must go early and get that extra ticket... zoo has 2 sides where separates by road.. you can use mono rail or bridge to cross the road.. mono rail cost 200¥. I recommend that because it’s another experience for people...
