After service in the Pacific, this naval destroyer became a museum open to the public to explore.
Awesome museum, only thing I caution is that the steps into some of the areas are extremely steep, but you dont miss much if you dont go down into those areas, still plenty to see for people who cannot get down the stairs.
This ship served during Vietnam. They have many artifacts related to the war and service afterwards. The ship is in great material condition and the staff continues to improve the visitor experience.
Excellent! Being retired Navy, it brought me back to that time being stationed on the boat. Smells included. Had a great time seeing all of the equipment associated with being a sailor out to sea.
Great time, was able to see everything in about an hour and a half withoit feeling rushed.
We had a great experience here. There was very few people there, which made it comfortable moving about tight quarters without getting into peoples space. The volunteers were so kind and encouraged us to ask questions. There were bottles of hand sanitizer scattered throughout. There were also bathrooms onboard, which was great. The air is dry and musky, so if youre prone to nosebleeds, bring tissues, and bring a jacket as it is cooler below deck. Great experience!
A superb example of a nearly perfectly restored cold-war era U.S. Navy surface warship. Excellent self-guided tour stretching the length and breadth of the Turner Joy affording access to nearly all of its vital sectors of propulsion, navigation, weapons control, and the 5-inch gun mounts and torpedo launching tubes! Very knowledgeable and welcoming volunteer staff. Excellent, clear, deeply informative text panels at all points of the self tour (English onlyidentify all of the ships most important components and concisely explain their functions at sea and during wartime. Great and very well-stocked gift shop with a wonderful and welcoming staff is a great venue to shop for vets of Navy/Marines and civilians with deep interest in modern American warships. By all means, cast-off and sail on over to this very rare artifact still afloat expressing beautfully what modern war at sea was really like for valiant mariners!
Best self guided historic tour Ive been through. My son and I had a great time.
Despite the price I thought it was a great experience, as active duty I got a nice discount and the ship represents the navy past and current well. The staff seemed a little rude but overall helpful. A good experience if you desire to see what we baby sailors living arrangements and work environments are.
Excellent self-guided tour that allows you to tour however in depth you wish. Guides are available for questions and are veterans with many stories to tell. One of my favorite stops when visiting Washington!
Self guided tour. Kid friendly. Super cool opportunity to tour and get hands on experience on a real destroyer ship. Our family enjoyed this very much.
Very expansive and enjoyable. That being said, if you are mobility challenged, this is not the place for you. There are many ladders and you can easily find yourself winded. Overall, a very neat place to visit.
We were too late to take a tour but it was pretty cool to see. There is a lot to see/ do in that area. Lots of restaurants. Fountain Park. Navy Museum. Beautiful views. Cool statues and displays. I definitely want to go back and take the tour.
A museum ship, also called USS TURNER JOY, is a ship that has been preserved and converted into a museum open to the public for educational or memorial purposes.I HAD A LOT OF FUN.
Great for kids! Almost the entire ship is open for exploration. Visiting the lower decks is physically challenging, as the stairs are so steep and cramped, theyre practically ladders. Its a good thing to keep in mind if your little ones tend to run off. Also, theres a lot to see so make enough time for the visit. I wish wed set aside three hours and brought waters and snacks. Its also a sobering reminder of the hardships of those in the military. When you see the berthing area, you will appreciate veterans even more.
It was really cool seeing how they lived and worked on the ship. Many interesting things!
Easy to get to, VERY complete ship and really knowledgeable guides. Highly highly recommend if youre interested in naval history!
This museum is pretty cool! So wonderful to explore the ship and get to see what it looks like. I love the fact it is right next to the Water taxi dock. The gift shop is cute. Looks at hats and t-shirt options. The entry fee seems pretty reasonable. Note, any charge via cc there will be a fee. Is better to be paying with cash. They do offer a discount for seniors and youth. The ship is 418 feet and she retired in November of 1982. I think is worth the money to tour this one.
This destroyer was small enough that visitors have the ability to take in a lot of the ship in one visit and large enough to let you know you ate on a ship that was an integral part of history. Retired veterans are onboard as guides. Definitely worth seeing!
Ive been to several retired warship museums and this had by far the most public access to its structure. Be sure to find a museum volunteer so you can hear the history lesson about the boat - that instruction made the visit worth it!
If you havent been on a Destroyer before, definitely check this out! Right on the marina and close to many awesome restaurants and snack stops, such as the Ice Cream Shoppe; Scoops& Bites! Best part, the museum, an ex-commissioned Naval Destroyer, the USS Turner Joy is free and self-guided!
Definitely worth a visit. Its like a time machine. You get to take a tour on your own if you like. Almost every area is accessible.
Just love this old tin can, or target as most would say. Great place, well maintained!
My teen and pre teen boys absolutely loved exploring the ship! The self guided tour is great because it lets you got at your own pace.
Well kept and maintained! Awesome self guided tour. We saw so much, even our sailors were impressed. It gave us civilian family members a much needed perspective of things.
I had a great time touring the USS Turner Joy and learning about its history. If you decide to visit the museum, be sure to bring your camera because the area surrounding it is gorgeous.
We had a group of I think 12. We had a great time. The people were friendly and nice. The gift shop was well stocked. At the end we all gathered and the bow for group pictures. Afterwards we went to together for pizza we had a lot of fun doing the ship. I was retired Navy, so my fee was $15. Adult fee is 18. And there are other discounts for active duty and active duty in uniform is free. You can check their website or active pricing and discounts.
Highly recommend ! This was so much fun for the entire family. So much history and so much to see. It was amazing. We had a awesome time. Make sure you allow extra time . Its a big ship with lots to see.
I was fortunate to get a compelling verbal brief of the Turner Joys role in history. It was an interesting tour and well worth your time. I enjoyed learning about shipboard life and seeing how crowded conditions were.
The self-guided tour gives you plenty of time to explore the open areas on your own time, which is good because there is enough to learn and see to spend hours and hours here! We enjoyed the history, intricate engineering, and sobering reality of the comforts our forces leave behind to defend freedom. Highly recommend!
I love to search on my own on this ship. It was an incredible and adventurous journey on this self-guided tour throughout the ship. You should call to check the opening hours since the hours in Google Map are not correct. I will come back some days. From Seattle with love
Awesome access to various parts of ship. Great history and informed staff that served on the ship
This is a terrific tour of a destroyer! You can go just about everywhere in the ship- engine room, bunk areas, officer quarters, bridge etc. the stairs between decks are very steep so you need to be very careful. Really enjoyed this after serving on one almost 50 years ago! Well worth the visit!
Well worth the trip to see this amazing piece of U.S. Navy History right here in the Puget Sound. Self guided tour of the entire vessel and several prior Navy Crew are on board to answer questions. I was impressed with everything they had to show and explain. On a sunny day you can see hundreds of jellyfish floating in the waters of the bay.The city of Bremerton also has many great stores recently reopened and not a disappointment ;)
Cool to experience how the sailors lived.Definitely a lot of steep steps and narrow walkways. Also, parts of the ship got pretty hot, so visiting on a very hot day might not be the best time. Overall it was very well maintained, and the kids as well the adults found it very interesting.
The whole family enjoyed visiting the ship. Well worth the experience to walk all thru it to see how sailors lived and worked
Loved it, highly recommend it. Several members of the retired crew were there to explain things. Lots of steep stairs but worth it. Self guided tour with well located signing. Its a great way to see how the sailors lived aboard a ship.
Fantastic preserved museum of naval and Vietnam War era history. Theres something for everyone ages 5 and up or so. Difficult for children and infants under that age. I love stopping in every couple years or so to check the Turner Joy out!
What a fun museum! The best part are the veterans who were there to give us the tour. They are clearly passionate about the ships history. Like others have pointed out you will go up and down 10 sets of very steep ladders FYI
An excellent experience. Was staying in Seattle for three days and decided to take the drive out, definitely worth it. Its crazy how cramped those gun turrets are. Very cool piece of history.
A really amazing piece of history, with a well set up self guided tour. Went with my kids aged between 8 and 15 and they were all entertained for hours while we walked around. The experience was made even better by having veterans on board to talk about thier experiences on board that very vessel. Slightly more expensive than I expected, but I can appreciate the cost just to keep it floating.
Super cool experience. The ship is kept exactly the same as it once looked to give the goers an experience as close as possible to back then.
Fascinating! Plan on spending many hours here touring the ship, inside and out. There are many different levels to tour, and youll want to give yourself plenty of time. There are lots of plaques to read and information to learn about.
I chaperoned a trip here for my daughters school. GREAT EXPERIENCE. Packed with great history and lots of information. The tour guides were spectacular. The whole boat had interesting things to see. What a great gem for the Kitsap Peninsula to have!
An enduring part of American history, this ship turned museum is almost completely accessable, I think the only place you cant enter is the lowest deck. All others areas are open to view, even if you have to appreciate it on the other side of a chain. Your can climb ladders down from the main deck, or climb to the bridge level. Stand on the front of the how to appreciate the view of the ship.
This wonderful piece of history is brilliantly maintained, staffed with an enthusiastic bunch of volunteers and is a great stop on a tour of the area. Has a gift shop, and many audio and visuals exhibits. You can go into one of the turrets.
This destroyer is very well maintained. I was able to explore almost the entire ship, 90%. I only wish there would have been a tour guide. It is difficult to photograph all the ship has to offer while reading the guide and trying to figure out what is what. However, I am extremely grateful to have had this opportunity. I was in Bremerton to recreate a photograph my Granddaddy took as his ship navigated Puget Sound. I am eternally grateful to all those people who maintain the USS Turner Joy!
Amazing! This is a must see. We learned so much on this boat- more than any class could ever teach your kids. Our kids loved going up in the gun, seeing the bunks, and driving the ship the most, but the whole ship with all the stories is a great experience.
A worthwhile tour. There are audio boxes in certain places that you can press to get more information about the area. For a Naval vessel that served in the Vietnam war, most of the equipment still works and they have a working coffee machine in the mess hall as well. Most of the sections of the ship are closed off, but dont worry, I would still get lost most of the time. This really makes me think about how big a aircraft carrier is since the USS Turner Joy is just a Naval destroyer.I really hope you dont encounter this but one of the staff must have forgot to re block a restricted area as it looks like the staff live in the ship as well. I found a modem connected to a HP Laptop in the restricted area they forgot to block off.I have a lot of more pictures but I have refrained from posting it because its really great if you enjoy it yourselves!
I love that they let you explore almost the entire ship on your own. You get to climb inside the guns, look into the extensive mechanical rooms below deck, see where the men slept and ate, look out from the bridge and many more. It feels like a time capsule. We spent 2 hours just exploring. We came early on a summer Saturday and it was not crowded.
This was an amazing piece of Naval History :-they say it was 90% available but a lot of places for blocked off so Im not sure that was correct however it was a maze well kept mechanics full of History! It is not handicap accessible and folks that cant climb really steep ladders might want to try something else...
