Tuskegee National Forest in Opelika
Description
Privilege
Theres not a ton of amenities here, but there are a lot of trails and it seems pretty undisturbed. If you want to look at wildlife, Ive found this place to be pretty good. I often see a lot of butterflies, birds, salamanders, lizards, etc. I have yet to see a deer but Im sure theyre out there.
MoreIt is my understanding that due to cut backs foresters and Rangers are limited. While trail walking in several areas, have never seen any Rangers. Some areas of the forest are beautiful but get creepy vibes because of no Rangers around. Wish Rangers had more presence in and around the forest for safety reasons. Do not go alone to this forest. Also, some areas do not receive cell signals depending on which service one is with.
MoreNice quiet campsite... Beautiful Forest!Great place to rest after travel and enjoy Gods handiwork! Liked the hiking...❤️
MoreSo many potatoes
I started hiking here several years ago. It was extremely overgrown then. The trails are now much clearer and better marked. Someone has stepped up and started taking care of them and it is greatly appreciated. It’s a beautiful, lush, low-key forest that has plenty of flora and fauna. Alabama’s hidden gem.
MoreClean primitive camping sites with a lot of availabilities.
I have Hiked and Biked there many times over the years. I truly enjoy the time I spend out there. Recommend to everyone.
MoreThis is where my fiance Is buried
I just have to give a big shout out to whoever takes care of this place. Hardly any trash anywhere. Pack it in pack it out. This place is fantastic!!!
MoreThe roads need to be worked very badly. The road off highway 29 has a big muddy hole in it
MoreAlways enjoy it when we stop by.
Quiet place during February to get away. Forest were clean and well maintained besides the occasional trash left by the litter bugs. I would visit again.
MoreNeed people up there that want to work so they can improve the place fields over grown nothing for the wild life to eat roads in bad shape other than that its a nice place to go and get away from it all
MoreLove this place. It calms the soul!
Surprisingly, the Outhouse toilet was pretty clean
Nice and very beautiful, if remote, place. The one major drawback - if you come here at any time other than winter, be absolutely sure to pack every mosquito repellent in your arsenal!
MoreGreat place to go and relax!!!!
Remote and empty
Ive came here for many years to ride the trails horseback. Its always been a peaceful place. In the last couple of years though it has gone downhill. There is a lot of logging being done with has messed up parts of the horse trails. Most of the time the trails themselves didnt even look like a trail anymore, they are no longer well kept. We spent most of our time just riding the hunters roads which would run us into several trucks and dirt bikes. (Isnt the best when youre trying to enjoy a peaceful ride on your horse. Then to top it off, our horse trailer got stuck trying to get out and back to the main highway. Some gravel needs to be dumped to prevent the mud from getting all soupy. We had to unload all the horses and then work the trailer out. Then reload... and etc. I love nature and Tuskegee forest is a beauty but its in serious need of some TLC if people are going to continue to come and enjoy it (especially the horse people). The photos I included was a short glimpse of when we was able to be on a trail for horses and then later when we rode the roads.
MoreBeautiful place but logging has turned some of my favorite hunting spots into what locals consider to be shooting ranges. Hard to find any silence now
MoreGreat quiet place to connect with nature. Easy to find trails and roads are well marked.
MoreGiven the location, this is a great nature reserve to unwind. The public areas were a bit unkempt, but we had a decent time at the lake and hiking. Ranger was super helpful.
MoreThe countrys smallest national park is actively shrinking. Beltram trail has been absolutely trashed from logging over the past week and into the forseeable future. Avoid unless you enjoy exploring indescriminate logging areas.
MoreThe roads are horrible! There should be a sign when entering that states you need a high clearance vehicle. Shame on you all for not maintaining the roads, that way we could enjoy ourselves during our visit. Who do i send the bill to for my jacked up bumper! Shame shame shame!
MoreRoads terrible condition
The local culture really shows itself. Trash everywhere, locals mudriding, trashcans shot full of holes. The word forest to me also implies diversity. This is nothing but a huge pine tree planting.
MoreBroken glass, scattered burnt wood, trash, used condoms and wrappers, an obviously murdered pitbull on the trail and atvs by the half dozen going in circles blasting county rap at midnight. What a disgrace of a national forest. This is a terrible place. Seriously, this dog was strangled with rope and dumped here 32.4580584, -85.6289307 and who happened to find it? My girlfriend walking with our two-year-old daughter. Alabama is a sick joke.
MoreMy first shooting range. Love the sign "Girls who shoot guns get bigger diamonds". Waiting for my big diamond!
MoreSuper nice people working there, very accommodating
This national park is great just bring your own water and also it is a great place to hike and ride bikes and do all the things u love so give it a try! Youll never forget it!
MoreRanger was super nice. Bring your own water. We didnt see a great deal of wildlife but it didnt slow down our fun. We paddled around the pond in our canoe. The campsites were clean and there wasnt any trash around at all. Free to camp and hike with many many geocaches. Visit the fire tower but do not climb. There is a store near by with fuel, ice, and conveniences. Tuskeegee National...... we had a good time, thank you.
MoreIt was awesome
The land where this national forest is was completely destroyed by farmers that didnt take care of the land. The whole forest is recently grown and it shows. It doesnt compare to the other national forests and state parks in Alabama but its free to use and is a great respite from the urban environment. Its not very large compared to other national forests but its got plenty of places to get away and go camping. They also have a pretty cheap shooting range.
MoreVery nice place to hike. Come for a full day as hiking trails are long. They also have a shooting range. Rangers are very nice and helpful.
MoreQuiet, beautiful landscape,untouched forestry....really great
Older facility but clean
