Tullynally Castle - Garden in Ros Comain, Ireland
Stopped over in the motorhome, parking a bit haphazard but plenty of room. Great gardens and good tea and cake
It is a fantastic place. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The castle and gardens are truly fabulous. The gardens are rather large so plan to spend a few hours looking round them. Well worth visiting. I will definitely be going again.
Great place to see with the castle and contents intact. Check the visiting time before visiting.
fabulous home and gardens. morag was a very informative and enthusiastic tour guide. will absolutely be back. the cafe staff are friendly and welcoming. well worth the visit
Extraordinary gardens, lovely place for families, dogs. Amazing castle very well kept. Has Caffè garden, the ice toffee coffe was very tasty.
Enjoyed it was a tour at the time during the Mullingar Fleadh
Have to say has the most beautiful garden walk - just try it! A real hidden gem in Westmeath. Beautiful spot to even sit in one of the gazebos and relax. Has coffee shop too but garden walk and shop only open Thurs - Sun. Enjoy 🤩
Great experience - highly recommend the tour. Unfortunately the weather didnt lend itself to a proper walk around the gardens, so happily well have to return. Lovely coffee shop with delicious treats.
Tullynally Castle has been home to the resident family since land in the area was granted to them during the Cromwellian takeover. The house itself is a bit of a mish-mash ( an impressive mish-mash, obvs), mostly solid, early-18th century (the inner courtyard is quietly lovely), ill-advisedly enlarged in Victorian times. The rooms which are displayed during a house tour are lived-in gentility style - library, dining room, ancient Old kitchen etc - of the sort to be met in all these kinds of houses. Very attractive vibes. Lovely tour by author Eliza Packenham. Lots of good portraiture including an attractive one of the 18th- century brains of the outfit Elizabeth Cuffe. The laundry rooms brings tears to the eyes at the thought of all that scrubbing. Theres a small archive- enhanced exhibition at this point. Dinky little tea shop ( with outdoor covered sitting areaand very friendly staff. Great, well kept garden with a guided walk among remarkable trees planted by the current head of the family. The work and cost to maintain a building like this is brought home to the visitor sharply by a reference to the acre of roof which must be maintained. Most enjoyable visit.
Beautiful gardens, gorgeous walks 💕
Always love our days here......even when lots of people around theres lots of space and quiet areas. The gardens always stunning and the staff and food in the cafe are second to none. Cant wait to see what surprises the garden has for us next time
I did the tour of the gardens, & also visited the courtyard cafe in the castle grounds. The gardens are exquisite with a range of plants and trees from all over the world. Highly recommended for a relaxing summer afternoon.
Excellent place to visit and good value.Beautiful gardens and a credit to the owners
Beautiful Garden and forest walk💞 they have a cafe and toilets , gorgeous plants and flowers
A nice tour with the servants quarters being the most interesting. Can only take the tour if you pay for gardens too! ...need to give option of tour only...in my view.
I dont usually give any place 5 stars. Tullynally is the exception because we made feel very welcome by warm hearted staff. We took a guided tour of the castle, our tour guide was excellent and answered all our questions. The tour of the castle was very informative and the castle exudes a homely feel rather than the usual cold creepy feeling of other castles or houses. The garden walk is really relaxing, the gardens are fabulous and very well maintained. Theres something for everybody with here, the llamas are the stars of the show. The gardens offer plenty of spots to discover and to get back to nature. Nothing wraps up a day out like a cup of tea or coffee and a big slice of cake. The cafe is situated in one of the courtyards with plenty of outdoor seating which is covered from the rain with a roof and indoor seating is available too. Over all this hidden jem in Westmeath should be the first stop for budding explorers, the historically curious and those for with a passion for environment sciences. I recommend this for families but parents will need to take extra care near the water.
Lovely café (accessible without entrance feeand great gardens. An extremely pleasant afternoon with coffee & cake, followed by a few hours walking around.
Fabulous walk in the gardens and the tea rooms were exceptional not even 10 euro for 2 lattes a cake and ice cream and very friendly staff to go with it , definitely worth a visit
Stunning picturesque beauty calm and relaxing woodlands and lakes.amaizing gardens and arboretum and unique architecture and history.well worth a visit at least once every season.
Lovely place, great walk lots to see,
What a wonderful day we had at Tullynally! The gardens and forest walks are beautiful. To discover that the Castle is a home for so many, was absolutely inspiring and a testament to the families commitment to remaining very much part of their local community. Tullynally is a location steeped in history and one not to be missed.
My father loved the work of Thomas Pakenham and although he did not get to Tullynally in his own lifetime, it propelled me to get there! What a joy to visit Tullynally yesterday. It’s beautiful woodlands and gardens. The extensive landscape and the obvious love that has been imbued into its care. The tour of the house was so informative and enjoyable - thank you to our wonderful guide Antonia or Eliza.Tullynally is an example of a living castle and grounds. We are indebted to Thomas and Valerie Pakenham and all those who live and work at Tullynally.A warm welcome awaits. I would thoroughly recommend a visit.
Brilliant place. Everything is really looked after, the cafe has nice cakes and the coffee is good. People are nice and the place is relaxing. The walk can be up to 7 Kms, but you will never be bored. To be advised. You could even dream and travel countries in a way.
Beautiful gardens, wel spent afternoon with family
This is the real old world, with buildings and machinery from the past, all beautifully presented and explained. Also a Cafe with gorgeous coffee and cakes. Well worth stopping if you are in the area, and even more if you like plants and animals. Everywhere is clean and well kept, staff are more than helpful and courteous. Yes a big thumbs up!The photo I included is the view when you are drinking your coffee on a Sunday morning!
Great place to walk, rest, reflect and enjoy nature
Beautiful spot, gardens are really lovely to walk around. Nice café in the courtyard with great coffee & cake to enjoy after your walk.
Went with brother, his kids and mine, a nice family day out to stroll around the gardens and the lake.Dose not cost a whole lot to enter and start via the small gate, begin the walk through some lovely gardens. Then through the woods and around the lake, where there are a few swans.Kids were given an informative leaflet of the places they can find along the walk, and they enjoyed spotting these hidden gems. Once the young ones were happy then you know its a decent day out, ha.The walk was very relaxing, path well laid out, and long enough to work off some calories. Was tired after it, which was good!Better than I had expected, and will be back again in future.
Nice gardens more natural than formal some of the signs were a little dirty and difficult to read. The walk covering the two lakes was about 4.5km. Will return in the spring when magnolias are in bloom.
Beautiful gardens with a good balance of gravel and grass paths. Great variety of plants, shrubs and mature trees. There are different themed gardens throughout the property all beautifully maintained. There is a questionnaire available for children with various landmarks and artefacts to find which is good fun and kept them busy and interested. Food and drinks can be purchased on site. A really great day out for all ages.
Beautiful castle although disappointed gardens were not open to public on day we visited. Will go again.....Update: delighted to say I did go again, historical tour given by lovely Guide which took about an hour along with small group of people. Spent rest of the day roaming the gardens. Well worth a visit
Beautiful land with walks through gardens, woods and water. Really recommended and also suitable for families.
A bit pricey (7,5€ per personbut the garden is really cute with many cute animals, flowers, decorated shelters and trees, and in particular a beautiful walk in the forest. In normal times you should be able to visit the castle but not at the moment.
A properly beautiful place to take a walk. If you love trees then this is definitely a spot to visit. You need to slowly stroll about the grounds to fully take in the stunning beauty of it all. The awesome trees really make the place special. There is a small fee to enter the main garden area. There is also a tea garden with toilet facilities. Plenty of parking. We didnt tour the castle itself but will be back to do a guided tour in the future.Highly recommend.
Beautiful gardens. Lovely walk around. Had a great day. Tea room was great. Highly recommended day out.
Wonderful gardens, streams, waterfalls and timber features. A lovely day out in nature. Plenty of wild flora and fauna to be seen. Home to two swans and their signets. Lovely cafe with lots of choice, a little pricey. Lots to see and learn. Theres something for all ages. Tours available also.
Our first time at Tullynally and it was great, great walks and scenery. If you ever go you wont be disappointed
A beautiful place, gardens, castle and tea rooms wonderful. Staff are very friendly and helpful
Fantastic place to visit. Beautiful gardens, lovely walk. Would recommend for individuals, couples, families with children.
Stunning gardens, nice and peaceful and lovely coffee shop , definitely worth the visit 🙂
Beautiful grounds. Lovely woodland walks. We brought my mother for her 90th Birthday. We had no difficulty navigating the gravel paths with the wheelchair.Recommend getting the tree guide before you set out.. There is an amazing variety of interesting trees. They are all numbered but I forgot to ask for a guide before we headed out.Had nice lunch in the sunny covered area in the courtyard, accessible toilets etc.Staff were lovely, helpful & obliging, setting up extra table for us, treating my Mam to chocolate cake & singing Happy Birthday!! Well done to you all.. 👏👏We had a fabulous day. 🌞My Mam is really enjoying Thomass book on trees, and the pamphlet on the history of the estate is also interesting reading.Am planning my return visit already.
Really a nice place to visit. Great walks and scenery throughout the grounds. Nice café to unwind at the end of your expedition. Well worth a visit.
Fabulous castle... Well from the outside it is... Its not open to the public yet. The grounds and small lakes and the trees... Especially the trees is what brings us here. They have a collection of some of the most amazing trees to be found in Ireland and many of them are unique to this location. Great place to visit for your head and your heart.
One of the favorite places to visit in Ireland. The real dimond of Midland. Beautiful gardens, peace and harmony. The castle is majestic, full of history and stories. Great coffee shop with tasty treats.
First time out here really amazing castle and grounds for part of The Production for Mark Bennett TV a LARCC fundraiser in association with Visit Westmeath.ie Blizzards live stream from the castle grounds.
I have visited Tullynally several times and it never fails to impress. From house tours, to the gardens and woodlands.Always finished off with a visit to the wonderful cafe. Highly recommended
First time there yesterday. Beautiful castle building with a lovely courtyard. The gardens and woodland walks by the lake were stunning. I will definitely be back when the Magnolias are in bloom. Well worth a visit and only 10 minutes drive from Fore Abbey.
Tullynally Castle is a country house (also known as Pakenham Hall Castlesituated some 2 km from Castlepollard on the Coole village road in County Westmeath, Ireland. The gothic style building has over 120 rooms and has been home to the Pakenham family (now the Earls of Longfordfor over 350 years. The house is surrounded by twelve acres of park land and gardens, including woodland gardens and walled gardens laid out in the early 19th century with a limestone grotto and ornamental lakes. In the 21st century a Chinese garden with a pagoda and a Tibetan garden of waterfalls and streams have been added. The site entrance from the public road is situated 1.5 km outside Castlepollard on the Granard road 20 km from Mullingar, 80 km from Dublin via the N4 or N3 roads. The grounds are open to the public from April to September. In 1665 Henry Pakenham, a captain in the Parliamentary Dragoons, was granted land in lieu of pay arrears that included Tullynally. His grandson Thomas was made first Baron Longford in 1756. Thomass grandson, another Thomas and 3rd Baron Longford, also inherited the superior title of 2nd Earl of Longford in 1794 from his grandmother, the Countess of Longford. The 2nd Earl remodelled the 17th-century house in the Gothic Revival style in the early 1800s, adding towers and a moat. It was by then larger than any other castellated house in Ireland. Since then, the house has passed down through successive generations of Pakenhams to the present earl, Thomas Pakenham, 8th Earl of Longford, and is the largest house in private hands in Ireland. The British Army general, Sir Edward Pakenham, GCB, was born and brought up in the house. His elder sister, Kitty, was married to Arthur Wellesley in 1806, who was subsequently created Duke of Wellington.
Had a nice drink in the small cafe, with its newly installed stove, then a walk around some of the grounds while waiting for the tour to begin. Being December the grounds werent in all their splendor but worth the visit none the less. Our tour began back at the cafe and was very informative, showing us the serrvants quarters and the guide had a very good knowledge of the history. Many of the rooms are well preserved with antiques.
Excellent place to visit, the gardens and ponds are so well kept and the coffee shop is great. Fantastic place for a walk on a nice day. Cant wait to go back.
