Tsar Asen Square, 5000 Tsarevets, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, Sliven
Famous medieval fortress & palace on a hill featuring an audiovisual show on Bulgarian history.
🥰 incredible ~ you must visit ~ 😍
Nice place, but is missing English informations.
All complex is a very nice place to visit, nice views, personally I enjoy the historical feeling in places with ruins.
Beautiful and historical place. If you want to go with the elevator to see the view, you will need to have 2 leva per person.
Verry nice place to visit, is a must if you come to Veliko!
If you are in the area, you have what to see here. You must visit the curch, the first one that i saw with such inside paintings
Great experience! I have visit this great monument for Bulgarian history when I was at school and now I had even more intense and great feeling!
Amazing place. 1 euro only to go inside. Nice spot to take nice pictures, picnic or spend your day. I visited it in a sunny day. Was amazing to see people and the capel on the top. FromThe top you have a good view from the city. If you have time it worth go to visit mini Bulgaria next to this fort. Nothing else to see in the city 3 hours it’s enough
If you want to see what an amazing history Bulgaria has, visit this place. It is huge, itll took few hrs to walk around it.
The fortress is the major touristic site from Veliko Tarnovo. The area of the fortress is quite large and you will burn some calories visiting it.On top of the hill there is a church which has some unconventional mural paintings.Unfortunately there are no explanations of the main touristic spots in English.Anyhow there are some great views over the city.
You can spend hours here exploring the fortress and admiring the views of Veliko Tarnovo town and the surrounding countryside. Tickets can be bought from the kiosk across the road from the entrance, and there are plenty of benches and cheap vending machines conveniently placed around the complex for when you need a sit down and a drink.
What am I supposed to do here? What is there to see? What is the story behind this place? Everyone is just slowly stumbling around, confused what they are seeing. No one understands what started this, what ended it, why it was important. 10lev per person? Tell me something. This is just a money factory for the town and a chance to take photos of areas around town you havent visited/hiked to. Youd be better off at mini Bulgaria. This was crazy. And yes, we spent 70 min at the site, entered everything, read (google translatedeverything. You will get nothing. They already know this but they dont care, I guess.
Great, it has a stage where they do Opera too
Great place to visit, full of very old Bulgarian history.....
Definitely one of the best and well preserved fortresses I visited. Very easily explorable, a good sight to see from close and afar. Its funny that inside one of the towers there are mock weapons to take some selfies with. The view to the city is also quite good. There are places to buy refreshments inside. Just please - to all visitors, squish your bottle before throwing it away. No need to take the space of the whole trashcan with two bottles.
Its a must see place when youre in Veliko Tarnovo. Beautiful views! It took us quite a lot of time to see it all so I definitely recommend taking water with you! My only issue was lack of English signs - I saw them in different languages but for some reason no English.
The place is very nice. It is relaxing to walk around the fortress. 10/10 worth seeing.
What a disappointing visit. There’s no signage or easily accessible guide to explain the importance and relevance of the site and it’s history, and you even pay 10 BGN entry and they ask where you are from. Could be run much better. There is an app apparently but was unable to access.
Great place to visit with children and understand bulgarian history. Magnificent views of the area, coupled with history is something one should not miss visiting Turnovo.
From the fortress you can see an amazing view of Veliko Tarnovo. It costs 15 bgn/family. To see it all, I think you need 2 hours. And, on Saturday night, I saw a light&sound show, which costs 10 bgn/child and 20 bgn/adult. It was interesting, but nothing special.
We were taken to this village/town as part of a Viking River Cruise on shore excursion, and rather than visit the shopping for tourist we undertook to walk up to the church, not really a church within the fortress walls. This was an interesting if challenging walk as the temperature was 38c, the views from the top were excellent and made the walk worthwhile.N.B. given that we had to pay to enter it was disappointing to discover that the toilet facilities were not free! The visit is recommended 👍
Excellent location! Well maintained, not crowded, good for spending a few hours outside.
The fortresses is a place were you can climb, walk and discover remains of it. The landscape can be better when everything is bloomed. As the signs says, watch out for small lizards on sunny days, and be prepared with bottles of water. The sun does not forgive. Also, light or comfortable shoes are recommended for climbing. Some tips:- the entrance is 5 lv for an adult- there are some vending machines close to the main church- capture the map from the main entrance for better guidance- youll find some interesting paintings inside the cliff church
Pretty close to the city center (20 to 30 minutes by walk), Tsarevets Fortress is definitely a must seen if you visit Veliko Tarnovo. The price for the entrance is pretty cheap and overall it takes approximately 2 to 3 hours (if you want to make a pauseto visit the whole place. If you are lucky and the weather is good, its a pleasure to just sit for a while here and relax, while enjoying the view.
A truly significant place that must be seen by anyone who visits the town. A good tour would take about 2 hours. Theres an a panoramic elevator behind the bells tower which I recommend, it costs 2lv per person the view is worth it. Overall a 5 star experience.
The old Capital of Bulgaria, keeps the spirit of centuries-old history. I love this place! ❤️Wish you were here!
Beautiful place full of history but it also provides a very good view over the old part of Veliko.
Main landmark and historical site of the city. Cant leave Veliko Tarnovo without visiting Tsarevets!
Big well maintained fortress and ruins. Beautiful view all the city and for the near hills, great place for walking.
The fortress is absolutely stunning.Definitely worth seeing. But as a person who has visited this place several times I would say that the tickets are definitely overpriced.5 euros and you dont even get to use a toilet for free - thats redicilous! No maintenance - the grass was only moaned at central spots.
When we visited there were no many people so we could take our tour in peace. The ruins are beautiful and the restored parts as the Patriarchy were amazing. Lots of green, lots of history. Everybody should visit.
Place of a great history. Its nice for a walk and sightseeing. It is large and has plenty of towers, fortress walls and the gen itself the Tzarevets fortress at the top. It is not big inside, but it has amazing view to the city. Very enjoyable. If I have to pick one place in Veliko Turnovo this will be it.
If you’re interested in historical tourism, this is a must see.If you’re not familiar with Bulgarian history, it might be a good idea to take a guided tour.Besides the historical value, there is a magnificent view from the fortress towards the city and the riverbed. So if you’re into photography, you might take some great pictures.
The main attraction of Veliko Tarnovo, the fortress is situated on a hill. The entrance is only 6 Leva, cheap. The tickets are available across the street from the entrance.Even this place is actually a ruin, there are still lots of things to see: the church on the hill, the old residences, the tower rebuilt.Lots of spectacular photos! However, since its the main attraction of the city, the municipality should do more things to improve it.For example, the signs and the explanations are mainly in German, Russian and Bulgarian. Only few in English!Visiting this place during the summer or during some national holidays would allow you to see a spectacular light show!
Worth the money for paying 10lev...with this breathtaking view and it’s a huge site for you to explore... we’re very lucky to come here just perfect weather. So in love with the panoramic view, the surroundings- it’s just great time and great experience. Definitely a MUST visit when you’re in this town.
Outstanding architecture and historical landmark. Great for visiting and photography. The best seasons to visit are summer and early autumn. There are always problems with parking, so its better to leave your car somewhere in the city. Interesting illumination show in the evening, but can be seen only from outside, cause opening hours are till 19:00.
Absolutely gorgeous place with stunning views. Medieval fortress, capital of the Second Bulgarian kingdom is in very good condition. Must see if you are in Bulgaria. The Baldwin tower, the patriarch cathedral, with its quiet modern painting - all that history all around is a great experience. If you are visiting in the summer - be prepared with a hat and water - it is very hot and sunny there.
A place in Bulgaria worth visiting! Veliko tarnovo is one of my favorite cities in Bulgaria, you have to see this Fortress and the old part of this city and the street with all the hand craft shops, also visit the green restaurant nearby the Fortress, the food was amazing.... enjoy!
Very huge ancient fortress situated high which give a beautiful view of the city. There is lot to see in the fortress. It has an temple with lovely paintings. You can hire a guide at the ticket counter (optional), who can give you the story and greatness of the fort. If you are there dont miss the museum with wax structures of monuments around Bulgaria.
If you visit VT than this is a must do. It is a nice place to walk around. It takes around 60-90 minutes to go around. The church on site has some rather interesting frescos which is also worth checking out.
Great attraction. The views from up above are amazing. You can see every angle of the town from the fortress. The students have discounted ticket price. You can spend quite some time here. There is a lift to take you in the church tower which is located highest in the citadel. Great place to take photos.
Nice historical site, great restauration, a must see for all history lovers since this was the medieval capital of Bulgaria. All the buildings are in great condition but what is really cool is that there are a lot of speakers around masked as stones from which the tourist can hear the history of the place in both bulgarian an english. Overall a great place to visit
The Tsarevets Fortress is definitely the most important landmark in Veliko Trnovo, however the view is not incredible (visited during winter). I’ve seen definitely better castles and fortresses and in my opinion the entrance is not really worth it. The view over Veliko can be enjoyed before entering the fortress and it’s actually enough to get an idea of what you can see.
Lovely place to visit. I loved the background sounding telling about the history of the fortress, I found it very helpful to explain the great Bulgarian history to my English friend. In general It’s nicely maintained except the ridiculous “театър на вековете/ theatre of the centuries” very old and ugly equipment so as sound. Toilets were disgusting..
What a beautiful place, not just the fortress really but the whole town. The fortress is must visit. It has a great history and it is carefully looked after. The palace as well is very pretty and the views from the tower are spectacular. It is the perfect place to spend the morning visiting the ruins and admiring the views. It is not really wheelchair friendly and it may difficult for old people so do not take your parents there if they get tired easily as the walk is not that confortable.
Nice historical place with great view on the city. You need to bring your own water of food if you plan to stay longer because you cant buy them from inside the fortress. The benches are very rare.
Amazing palace and beautiful church ⛪ the view from the church’s roof is spectacular 😍😍 u can see all Veliko Tărnovo. We went during August and it was a little bit cold with some rain from time to time. Overall I highly recommend this place and visiting Veliko is a must it’s an amazing village.
This fortress is amazing. I am a fan of medieval cities and I liked this one really much. I have to say that is huge and it takes maybe two hours to walk and see the whole place. Ive been there on a cloudy day, but Im sure the view from there is awesome. The church is also a must see, with some amazing paintings inside. The only thing you should be aware of is that you have to buy the tickets from the outside, near the first restaurant on the street.
One of the best castles in the whole world. The visit is an amazing trip in the past. Wonderful place for kids and adults. This castle combines entertainment and education in a perfect landscape. Also it shows the Bulgarian history through the history of the castle. The ticket price is low for this historical monument. I recommend it without thoughts.
A big fortress located in the city center. Many archeological sites, beautiful circle of walls, entrance through the long bridge. At evening you can admire incredible 20-minutes light show. If you are lucky as me, you will go there during the medieval festival :)
