6 & 8 1st St, Kingston, Jamaica, Spanish Town
Tours are offered of this former tenement yard that was home to Bob Marley & other reggae artists.
Really enjoyed the visit and history lessons. Bob Marley isnt the only focus of the tour. You will learn about all the legendary people that make Trench Town the historic site it is. The real stars are the locals that run the tours. They are able to explain the significance of the lyrics, the legends who helped create the legend and the family history of Bob. You can see his room. You can see his lifestyle.
Went to Trenchtown today and saw all the history not only from Bob Marley but many others who I didnt even know are from Trenchtown. Good people out there, nothing but Love and Respect. My guy whos nickname is "Blackie" showed me around and was full of knowledge. So much to see and interesting facts to learn about.
Bring back great memories
Information is great would definitely recommend a second visit... could do with a little tightening up in some areas of presentation however...
Great place you all should go for a visit
Its ok as an entertainment venue.
Irie vibes, cultural and historical space. Educational tour
Tour was good, my guests enjoyed it,was amazed at the young age Bob passed on.
I did the full tour today with my family. This included a tour of where Bob lived, his mothers former house and a walk through the community. What a lovely experience! The tour guides were good especially Kash. The people in the community were warm & welcoming. We learnt a lot about the roots of reggae and where many of our famous Jamaican reggae artistes started their musical career. Great experience 👏🏾👏🏾
Its very educational. The birth place of reggae music here in Jamaica so many artists came from here
Very nice short history of most popular musician and many others who started in that place
Such an educational and cultural experience, a definite must when visiting Kingston.
Hallowed ground. Great tour guide.
This was a really unique and worthy experience. We opted for the full community tour option ($30 US per adult plus tip for the tour guideand we were there about an hour and a half. The woman who runs the place seems really amazing and her son was an excellent tour guide. The community tour may vary depending on when you are there and what is going on. The tour of the museum/house felt a little rushed- there was tons of stuff to look at and I could have spent more time in each room. Bob Marleys mom’s house is only something you can see from the street not enter. I could go on about how valuable I think this experience would be for everyone…the community is very welcoming and the place really is open everyday as those who run it live right there. Just pull up and ask and they will get someone if the gate is closed. She also runs a hostel right there nearby as well if you are interested in really being immersed and welcomed into the community. I wish more neighborhoods all over the world would organize cultural history, community cooperative and immersion opportunities like this.
Oh man, TrenchTown! Do I really have to say something else? But of course! The historical background is best experienced there, but if I can say one thing, then this: I was really welcome there. I met very nice people. Link up! Especially in the Culture Yard you feel the Natural Mystic Blowing. You become the Jam. Ive even been there a second time ... because of the people. After the third time in Kingston and the Culture Yard:This place is one of those places I would call a castle. From here you can explore and get to know Kingston very well, you get tips from locals and you can get escort and taxi there, but much more ...It is an oasis of peace,... jump on the vibes...
This location was genuinely authentic Jamaican Shanthi town. It gives a real roots of the legends early days. Very interesting artifacts and stories.
It was a unique view of Bobs early years a brought back memories of his songs that I used to listen to in my younger days. It also brought to life some of the lyrics in some of his records so dust off your old LPs and tapes and play them before you visit.
Highly recommend the Trenchtown walking tour for the Bob Marley fans out there.
It was amazing. Deceptive at first sight, but the guides know their history and theres so much to learn and see here about Bob Marleys younger life and first encounter with music.
Excellent place and excellent history, a lot of information for reggae roots and Bob Marley. Bit dull due to COVID-19 but otherwise a good visit.
Highlight of my trip! I was impressed with Barbaras knowledge of the vast history off the top of her head! The guy who took me to n the walk went above and beyond, and the experience I n Tuff Gong meant a lot too.
Loved it here. Was great hearing the history of Trench Town and Bob Marley. I would recommend going here any day. Ask for Blackie or Sophia they are awesome
Recently went here.Big ups for T and S for showing me around.Great to see the yard and how it ushers the community together. Also great to experience Bob Marleys beginning in Kingston and Rastafarian culture. The surrounding area is dope too as you get to see the famed walls.Ps - Trench town is pretty rough I suggest a good driver or a tour
This place doesn’t deserve to be recognized as a museum. The administration is not professional and the place has almost nothing interesting. The “tour” lasts 10 minutes and consists of a quick visit through four rooms and the small yard, where there is the first car used by Bob Marley, but it’s almost destroyed. The tickets costs absurd 18 USD.
Always worth a visit! Its a good lesson of the hardships of the common people in Kingston, if you go on a community tour. Its an interesting lesson, if you are reggaelover, to understand, from what the lyrics speak in the songs of Marley, Tosh and so many other talents from Trenchtown. It will open your heart ... Dont miss to visit the Trenchtown Reading Center, it is an important project for the communuty, especially for the kids and the youth. Respect, TTCY and TTRC.
The roots of many Jamaican superstars, probably most notably, Bob Marley. The culture yard is a piece of history that was preserved in time. The tour gives an authentic feel of what it was like growing up in a Jamaican "government yard" in the 60s coming forward and highlight personalities that evolved from Trench Town.
Probably the best experience Ive ever had at a museum. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable. You learn a lot about Bob Marley. However the saying goes , Bob Marley didnt make Trench Town. Trench town made Bob Marley. Youll understand the amount of musical passion that came out of trench town. Youll understand so much more of the history behind many of Marleys lyrics. I would give this more than 5 stars, but I cant.
Great Place to see a piece of History nothing that would blow your mind though. The little music session they sing is fun, $2000jmd ($22Canadianfor the CD is quite pricey after paying $1000jmd to get in for the short tour.... make it a day trip with also seeing Trench Town Art Center in the area and making a souvenir to take home. I had asked if there was anything else in the area to do and was told no but walking around through Trench Town I found the Art Center, they should really support each other and make the neighborhood success together...could have used some cooked food along the way in the neighborhood
Home of the legend. A place that forces you to remember your past and yearn to see the preservation put in place for future generations. To put foot on this site makes you feel a part of history. Life is a gift and its what you do with the gift of life that tells a story. Endeavor to leave a legacy for the future whether nationally or internationally.
Really solid tournof what trenchtown once was and what it has done for the world as far as creating and facilitating these amazing artists. The tour is great, then the street tour is awesome, although kind of sketchy at 1st. You quickly relax as the tour guides roll up spiff after spiff and ease you into good vibes... and grab a smoothie from them on the way out
It was knowledgable l learn the origin of the name Trench Town and how the mother of The late Bob Marley came to the place/ community of Trench Town.
Culture Yard is the "government yard in Trench Town" Bob Marley sang of; the "tenement yard" house he grew up in and lwhere he learned to play guitar. Some real history here plus they offer walking tours of the Trench Town community.
A "must visit" whenever you go to Jamaica! The history Culture Yard holds is truly amazing to take in.
One of the best visits I’ve had anywhere, a real insight into Jamaican history and cultural interface and the impact political decisions can have on people.
If you have an interest in the birth of Reggae music or the domestic condition that give rise to the music its a must visit. The home of Bob Marley in the early days. Along with the Bob Marley statue and museum a must see for all true Reggae and Bob Marley aficionado.
I was great experience. Nice paintings on the walls and pictures of bob marley and others.
Great tour. Highly recommended. A very well done event. You get to peek into the lives and history of not just Bob Marley but all of Jamaica reggae great forerunners. We felt no pressure either on this tour.
This trip was an historical event. The place is a national monument. The once residence of the legendary Robert Nests Marley presereved for all who visit to get a taste of history. The atmosphere is so authentic, u feel immersed in a time zone. The tour guides compliment this ambience with courtesy, professionalism along with a well informed tour. In all it was a wonderful experience, would definitely do it again and recommend to others.
Excellent experience. My tour guide and people at the Culture Yard were very kind and knowledgeable. I will be returning 😊
This place pulsates with history, especially the history of Reggae music. You get the chance to stand inside Bob Marleys one-bed-room apartment, converted from what was the common kitchen in this former "tenement yard." This is a must-see tour for anyone who loves Reggae and seeks a deeper understanding of its origin.
Really interesting place of history and very humble people
Best tour in my opinion! Besides the tour me and my girl got to hang around with the locals and some other spiritual people in Trench Town. Big up to Chris who works as a taxi driver at Eden Resort!
This was one of the more interesting stops on my trip. Its not very "touristy" and thats what sat it apart. Great guide who actually lived therev and could tell all kind of interesting things
A must-see for locals and foreigners alike to understand the circumstances and inspiration behind so many talents- Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Vincent Ford etc, and experience life in Kingstons mid1900s inner cities. Cheapest tour starts at $800JMD or US$12 and lasts about an hour
Culture Yard takes you back to a time and space in Jamaicas cultural and social history
This is a very important cultural space for reggae music and Jamaica in general. It helps us to understand the life and times of Kingston that created the music we appreciate today. As Bob Marley lived at that address, it holds special significance as he is a leading figure in the music of that period. The VW bus that was featured in the Babylon by Bus tour is the highlight, but it could be argued that it needs to be preserved.
We just toured the building as we were on a bit of a budget and we didnt want to fork out for the whole trench town area tour. The tour wasnt very informative and was only about 15 mins in whole. The area is interesting to see when driving through (a whole other world from the rest of jamaicaand its nice to see where bob lived in his teens. We listened to the reggee band who who were pretty cool but we didnt purcase their cd. (Who uses cds nowadays? -maybe the should look into getting on itunes or somethingbut we anyway gave a tip for their efforts. After that we were escorted off the premises and was refrained from taking more photos as the tour was now over.
The Trench Town culture yard is an heritage site, home of Reggae music, this is more the rustic part of Bob Marley life, and rich history
This place is a must visit for true reggae fans. This is where Bob Marley and many other reggae artists started out. Remember to bring cash with you because cards are not accepted. We did a tour of the yard with the lady who manages the place then toured the neighborhood with Blackie. It was humbling and sobering to see the living conditions of the residents of Trenchtown but very a insightful and informative tour. It was a wonderful opportunity to interact with the people of Jamaica and learn from them. After the tours we heard a few songs from a member of the band Livin Kulcha. We would have bought the CD but didnt bring enough cash. It was great to see where Bob and others came from and to learn about all the music history in this tiny town. Thanks for sharing with us
Wonderful experience, excellent guide. "The government yard in Trenchtown" of No Woman No Cry fame and Marleys home.
