Totara Flats Hut in Upper Hutt

Just over 4hrs from holdsworth carpark.

Great hut, beautiful clear river for swimming and getting drinking water! To the hut it took us approximately 4 hours as out of practice hikers. Really nice, diverse views and terrain. Track is a little overgrown and could be hard to find at first, but no real danger. Also loved the swing bridges, although the first one took us by surprise at how high it was!! We went in from Waiohine road, be aware its a significant way on very narrow gravel roads, but a very cool camp ground at the start of the hike so could easily make a big trip out of it!

So Im not the fittest. We did the trip in 3 hours 20 min from waione road. You basically follow the gully up. Starts with a decent swing bridge that I would not take in high wind. It moves quite a bit and I got sweatier pans that when I went sky diving. Safe as house though.From there you wind up the valley crossing a from ridge lines. These ascents can be over 45° but never more than 20 or ,30m of total ascent. This goes on for 4 swing bridges and about 5 or 6 climbs.Eventually you come to a lookout up a big valley with lots of great. I dont think you can see it but over to the right across the river about half way up the valley will be Sayers hut. Its not marked but there is a small cairn across the river as your walking along.Continue through up the valley in the grass and the bush will eventyally come and you only a hundred or so meters away. Congratulations youve made it. Reward yourself with a wash in the river and a hot cup of scroggin.

Nice clean 20 bed hut with a helicopter landing area near by. Approx 5 hours from Holdsworth carpark. Plenty of fire wood, large food prep area and tables. Bit disappointed in the behaviour of a group of 5 young locals who decided to fill up the fireplace with plastic rubbish - please dont do dumb things like this while youre there, keep it nice for everyone! 2 long drop toilets were not nearly enough for the 30 people when I was there, including campers using the facilities - they were in pretty bad shape at the start of the weekend. Carry toilet paper and all cooking supplies.

Easy enough to get to. Being serviced there were some pots and pans to use and plenty of firewood.
