Top Notch Texas BBQ in Childress

We stop here to eat every time we pass through. We have to plan on leaving from Albuquerque NM to Graham TX to make sure that its open when we get there.

Pretty tasty.. had the brisket BBQ sandwich.. the green beans were of the canned variety but fine. The fried mushrooms are delightful. Hubs had the Chicken Fried Steak.. very yummy. Apparently.. if you get chicken and dont like it you can take it next door to Daddys and trade it for a gun..lol

The service was friendly but seemed under staffed and was slow as result. The brisket had good flavor and was tender. The ribs were cooked well but lacked smoke flavor. The fried pickles were excellent. Overall I think the quality of the BBQ suffers from an expanded menu. Id give this BBQ a 5 of 10 which would make it excellent in any other state. But this is Texas and I need to taste that smoke.

Stopped in on my road trip to New Mexico, wanting to get some last second Texas BBQ. The brisket was somewhat dry, needed the bbq sauce or it would have been hard to choke down. No pink edge at all, it was grey all the way to the bark. The sausage was good, didn’t need the sauce for that. Sides were lacking very much. Green beans were eh and the mashed potatoes were horrible. Instant mashed potatoes that tasted like wet sawdust and no amount of salt could fix it. The banana pudding was so so. Kinda bummed overall since Trip Advisor has this as the #1 spot in Childress. Skip and go to Dairy Queen

Not terribly impressed with this joint. We were traveling and stopped in. The barbq was good but not great. Pulled pork sandwich wasnt stellar, but at least the bun was toasted. The vibe here was also pretty... Lackluster.

We stop at a new BBQ place everytime we drive through TX. We stopped at Top Notch, thought the brisket, pulled pork & sausage were dry, the fried okra was softer than I prefer (I like crunchy breaded okra). Mashed potatoes, beans, sweet tea & atmosphere were good though. There r many good bbq places in TX & this just wasnt one at the top of the list.

Forgot to take a pic! We grubbed!! Mushroom n Swiss burger was fabulous and my hubs Top Notch burger with brisket on it was even better! Tots were crunchy, yummo and fried mushrooms with ranch were soo good!! Definitely coming back!

Top Notch offers several of my favorites. Their chicken fried steak is outstanding! When Im craving a salad, I like their BBQ salad, which has the meat of your choice on top of a gorgeous salad (always fresh and crisp). They also serve cold beer. Their dining room is spacious. Weve always had good and friendly service.

Delicious hometown barbecue! We had the turkey, brisket, ribs, and sausage, and it didnt disappoint. Our waitress was excellent, and the manager was so friendly. This was a great place to stop and eat at on our trip home.

My husband enjoyed a 2 meat dinner of their brisket and sausage, with fried orka - the brisket was very tender and juicy!I had the loaded baked potato which was good sized, I took brisket (pulled pork was also offeredand had it put on the side. It was delicious!!Quick service. Very clean. Cold beer and fresh sweet tea!

Food was good - wait to get our food to the table was WAY longer then it needed to be. Staff could be a LOT more kind and efficient then they are. I’m disappointed that I came here for dinner.

The portion in relation to the price is lacking. The GM acts like he doing his customers a favor not raising his prices, despite the fact, having customers telling him that he should. I found the GM to be smug, not only because of the aforementioned reply to pricing/portion, but he acts like that if price is a problem, then you could go somewhere cheaper to eat.The meat isnt even traditionally smoked. The have a commercial oven that introduces a low level of smoke that does not either produce that beloved pink ring, not does it create that nice black bark we love in traditional brisket. The seasoning blend is not savory by any definition, and their brisket would be dead last at any serious bbq competition.It seems to me that the people of Childress would be best served if real smoked meat were introduced to this community. The management at Top Notch need to be humbled, and realize they are not producing a superior product compared to what others in the state are doing.After spending time reading multiple reviews, it has occurred to me that this place is the Amys Baking Company of BBQ. If you dont know about Amys, you tube it.*The only reason I went back is because my truck was at the tow yard in town, and had to walk everywhere, and there are almost no other options near by.

Driving thru on way to Colorado. Worst food! Flavorless! BBQ sauce taste like catsup. Side salad was wilted old ice burg lettuce. Mashed potatoes were tasteless & pasty. Brisket was tough, unseasoned, & probably leftover from previous day.

Best BBQ I’ve ever had! Everything our party ordered was delicious!

Amazing Food! Came back again from my last time I was there when driving through town a couple years ago. Ribs are amazing and so tender!

This place was fantastic. Service and food were excellent. Driving all the way from Colorado to eat there again Saturday night 😊😂

I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak sandwich along with Shoe String Fried Onions. Very good! Couldnt eat it all, so brought home the remainder.

My "burnt ends" were just sliced brisket, but it was still pretty good. Everyone is always nice and the food is good.

Great first impression, the pulled pork was awesome, l really liked the BBQ sauce, awesome service! So yeah, 5 stars.

I was very disappointed in the quality of BBQ.it wasn’t smoked very well at all, it wasn’t seasoning very well. Not a place I would consider having top-notch barbecue. And they put the beans and coleslaw in a 4 ounce Styrofoam cup, which I thought was odd

Myself and a friend stopped in to have dinner and it was our first time. We both ordered the “sampler” which is 1 slice of brisket, 1 rib, a small scoop of pulled pork, and a small piece of smoked sausage. The sides I ordered were fried okra with tater tots. Our food was blah! The brisket and pulled pork were barely warm and had no flavor. The sausage was good but honestly who can screw that up. The rib however was decent. The sides were good but again who can screw that up. We stopped here because we wanted good barbecue and unfortunately we did not get it. Won’t be eating here again.

Two meat plate: sausage & brisket. Brisket was tough & stringy, very bland, lacked any barbecue seasoning. Sausage had been heated on a grill, not “smoked” as described in menu. Cole slaw not so great, potato salad was acceptable for a church potluck. Not going back.

Not the best barbecue Ive had in Texas, but reasonably good and impressive at such a low price.

I am a truck driver and was passing through Childress Texas yesterday, Monday the 25th of April around 5pm. I got a pound of brisket and a 1/2 pound of turkey. The bill was over $40 dollars. This BBQ was by far the worst smoked brisket and turkey I have ever had in my life. It was so dry I couldnt even eat it. I ended up throwing the whole pound and a half in the trash. The meat must have been cooked several days before. It would have made a good beef jerky. I guess the small town restaurants cant afford to cook fresh food on a daily basis. If you go to this restaurant, you cant say you havent been warned. Eat at you own risk.

This place was yummy. We always stop somewhere in Childress to eat on our way to visit relatives and decided to try this place out. I had the brisket and my hubs had pulled pork. It was excellent and very nice staff. This will be our new stop every time we head to see family in Kansas.

One of the very best Frito pies Ive ever eaten, although was a barbecue brisket Frito pie not a true traditional chili Frito pie but oh it was damn good.

Called in my order to pick up when I drove thru. Was ready when I got there. Sliced brisket is absolutely tender and delicious. The best Ive ever had. Ribs wonderful too. So glad I stopped!

The food was really good, by the sides were... Lacking.... Cheese sticks stayed nice and warm down to the last bite, and were well size sized too. I got the Top Notch Burger with pulled pork. Very delicious! Wish they gave you a bit more BBQ sauce, but I imagine you can just ask for more. Staff was very quick and attentive. My waitress was very patient with me as well as I decided what I wanted. If you need to use the restrooms though, dont use the stall (at least for guys). The walls were very short, offering no privacy. I mean you can literally see the toilet out of the corner of your eye while using the urinal, and Im average height. Would come back though. Loved the food

I ate there 2 years ago and it was excellent. Sorry to say I went two days ago for take out and everything was bad. Brisket was dry and pulled pork had an odor and tasted old. The pinto beans were ok but the coleslaw looked like it had been setting out awhile and had turned a pinky brown color. I don’t ever give a bad review, I just want review unless it’s good but I was so disappointed. I had been building up y’all’s food and then ended up regretting it.

I didn’t really like the food here. I ordered chopped brisket, supposed to more juicy then sliced but not at all. It was to dry. I tried their beans it had big slices of jalapeños in it, looks like more then beans to me and it had no taste. I was just passing by, may be it wasn’t a good time to stop by. I wouldn’t eat there again.

I stopped here on my way home. The young gentleman at the counter was great. But this what I got for 17 dollars and some change. Two pieces of sliced brisket and about 8 pieces of sausage. Looking at everyone’s pictures in the reviews tells me I got ripped off. Definitely not what I expected for my money. Will I eat here again probably not. The reason I gave it a 2 was because of the young man at the register.Edit:: As to your response: Please don’t insult me on what to recommend that is in more my price range. I can very a much afford the 17 dollars or even 100 dollars as long as I got my monies worth. And that what I got served was not my monies worth. Hope you insult all your bad reviewers this way. Only in town a few days to do genealogy research and found this place. We had the nachos with pulled pork and they were amazing. Hubby had Hamburger steak that was very good and I had the 2 meat plate. The brisket was exceptional! Pulled pork was good. I ordered the pinto beans as my side and didn’t realize they had jalapeños…. Too spicy for me but the sweet potato fries were great! The staff was very attentive even tho they had a party of 20 HS girls eating!

Wonderful service. They were about to close when we came in so the barbecue may well have been the last batch. Still appreciated the wonderful people and experience.

Stopped in on our way home on a road trip.The fried mushrooms were the best Ive ever had. Not the usual deep fried buttons you get everywhere else. So good.We split the sampler plate and there was plenty for the both of us. The BBQ sauce was the BEST! No twang or spicy, it was perfect for us.The sweet tea was just the right amount of sweet!The staff was very nice and gave a genuine welcoming experience.Bathroom was clean.All in all absolutely perfect dinner.

We stopped here on the way home from family vacation 2 years in a row. The brisket is amazing and also the brisket loaded potato

This is a great place to visit for some good ol BBQ. You can tell the specialty is the meats. Tried the mashed potatoes and coleslaw. The slaw uses some mustard which I personally like. The mashed potatoes were black pepper style, no gravy. The sauce is sweet and tangy. Overall a great experience. Try some sweet tea to wash it all down.

Good BBQ, some of the brisket was cold and the baked potato salad wasnt great. Good stop at a small town, nonetheless.

I ordered the meat sample meal. It came with one rib, pulled pork, one slice of beef brisket and sausage. It also came with choice of two sides. I elected the macaroni and cheese and the pinto beans.Both the pulled pork and rib were very fatty. I mean very fatty. Not much meat on the rib and at least half of my pulled pork was just...’pulled fat’. I was very disappointed in this.The brisket was decent although somewhat fatty itself.I enjoyed the smoked sausage the most. It had a very mild kick to it.The barbecue sauce was good but nothing dissimilar from any other barbecue joint.The macaroni and cheese was poor. Very runny and flavorless. The pinto beans were good. They had a mild kick as well.Got peach cobbler for dessert. It was good.My waitress was friendly and attentive and the service was prompt.

It deserves the name "Top Notch". This is seriously good, serious Texas BBQ. Dont expect snooty, formal waitstaff - this place is as down-home friendly as it gets. But service is good, the atmosphere is extremely comfortable, and the food is so good that its worth a return trip.

Good bbq.Wbecause it didnt look good but everything had good flavor. The sausage really shines, good flavor, juicy with a kick. Im not a sausage girl & gene ordered the meat sampler which included Jalapeno cheese sausage, pulled pork, sliced brisket, one pork rib, fried okra & potato salad. I did take a pic erally think it a waste to order it if there is beef on the menu. Same with sauce because if you have to put sauce on it it wasnt worth eating but this sauce was good enough to take so home.I would stop here again.

Truly is top notch Texas bbq, the brisket and ribs were delicious. The egg rolls are surprisingly very good. The sweet tea is among the best I’ve ever drank. I was only disappointed in the Mac n cheese and the baked potato. The service was top tier, never went without a full cup of tea. Will definitely be trying again and trying the other sides instead of those.

Great place to drop in for a sample of Texas BBQ. Everything was delicious, the meats were all fork-tender, and the smoked sausage was bursting with flavor.I docked a star only because the men’s room had a puddle in the middle of the floor.

We tried here while traveling thru Childress and wanted something besides fast food. Restaurant was different than usual BBQ as there is table service with menus instead of counter service. That was actually nice.When asked "how many?" I indicated the 2 yr old and myself. As you can see she gave her a regular menu. I know my 2 yr old is bright but seriously? Lol 😂 But I digress.The brisket was tender and flavorful. They dont heap it on to be sure.....so if youre hungry Id order a larger plate. The child loved the green beans. The potato salad was lackluster and not worth mentioning. Oddly, there was no bread, onion, or pickle offerings.

Wow! Everything I ordered was fantastic, the brisket and the sides. The fried okra was THE BEST Ive ever had, ever. What a great stop for a traveler.

I stopped for lunch today and was glad I did. The two meat plate was delicious; I ordered brisket, jalapeño sausage, pinto beans, and fries with tea to drink. The brisket had a great flavor and nice texture but was just a bit dry; the jalapeño sausage was delicious, with enough spice to be flavorful but not overpowering; the pinto beans had a lot of flavor and had been cooked until very tender; the fries were good and served fresh out of the oil; the tea was ok, with a bit of cloudiness and strong flavor.So why only a 4? As mentioned, the brisket was slightly dry, and the tea wasnt great. And the service seemed pretty slow, especially getting the check after Id finished eating. But I would definitely go back when Im in the area.

The absolute best bbq in the Texas Panhandle! Ranked second to only Franklin BBQ of Austin in my personal opinion. Take it from a bbq junkie; this place is the real deal Texas BBQ! And the best pinto beans Ive ever had! Had to stop back by on the way back home to grab some more to take home!

The brisket was great, pork was dry, jalapeno sausage also had cheese so not that good. My husband said had he known it had cheese he wouldnt of ordered it. The fries tasted funny like old grease. The Cole slaw was yummy. My daughter had brisket sandwich which she liked. Brisket was delicious. I would visit again but only have brisket.

The food was perfect. I had the 2 meat platter and couldnt even finish it. The meat was great. The beans could use a little more flavor but overall very good. The staff was friendly and helpful.
