Tom McHugo's - Bar in Hobart, Australia
Lovely spot, but didnt realise that it is certainly more of a restaurant then a pub, no room for standing at the bar with a beer.
Possibly the worst pub ive ever been to.I got a "english longhorn pastrami roll with pepper gravy and chips" aka for 18 bucks i got 4 slices of pastrami, a burnt bread roll, a small bowl of mccains frozen chips and some gravy.Absolutely horrid.Id heard the pies here were good, my partner got a lamb mince pie with mushy peas and gravy. Looked like a burnt pie served on a pile of sick. Had no other flavour except pepper.Great job on "priding yourselved on the life you live" atleast you served hobart brewing co beer and an extortionate rate, because that was the only tasty thing i enjoyed. The fact that this has 4.4 stars goes to show that you can throw a bunch of fancy words in your menu and serve garbage and people will still think its good. Im going to mcdonalds.
Great atmosphere and service, definitely worth a visit
Absolutely stunning food and drinks in Hobart. The most incredible, well thought out dishes and so reasonably priced. Fabulous all-Tassie craft taps and a fun wine list
We had drinks and snacks which were interesting and tasty. McHugos is innovative and supports local producers of both drinks and ingredients.
We would eat here every day if it was possible.. We came for lunch and dinner - both very enjoyable and well priced. We didnt have a booking either day and were quickly seated by lovely front-of-house staff. They have a great range of beers including some hand-pumped beer from Two Metre Tall Farmhouse. Highly recommend!
We started off not so great waiting 10 minutes to be approached by a server to be seated. The seats at our table were high stools and would’ve been comfortable enough if the turn around was efficient. Sadly this was definitely not the case and we waited one hour for our mains to arrive. The steak was cold and chewy and not cooked as requested. As the seating was so uncomfortable for long term use, we both left with sore backs. We were so disappointed as we’d read such good reviews about this venue.
Great little watering hole with a broad enough menu to please most, at great prices.I had the lamb and pepper pie with mushy peas. Tasty, bit of zing and filling. Hard to find anything wrong, especially for $18. Washed it down with a local ale. Didnt wait long, everyone was very pleasant.
Great food and wine but do the staff know they don’t have to work in hospo if they don’t enjoy it? They can also access 10 free mental health sessions via Medicare if life is that hard they cannot be polite to customers lol
Insane food. Great staff. If your in town make the effort to come here it’s probably the best pub food I’ve had! Farm to table is also a great approach to this style of food 👏 well done
I had the pie. Very tasty. Just a couple things. I was disappointed that it was served in a bowl and not on a main plate. Also I miss read the meal description. It would be more of a main if it came with mash potato as well. I was a little let down. But still good 👍
Meat was raw. We asked to cook it again. The result was not great. Beer was good.
Went down to Tassie for a holiday and ended up eating here 3 times it was THAT GOOD. Love Tom McHugos, big ups to my new fave pub.
Get the Haggis! Mince sort of texture inside with super flavourful sweet, anise-y, spicy sauce very impressive.
Best pub food I’ve ever had in my whole life.
We came here because we read great reviews about their steak & fries. However when we got here, we were told that they have changed their menu. Hence we had roast beef instead with local produce. Not sure what vegetables they were, but so good that it made me eat my greens.
I’m not a man of numbers, but here’s some quick maths. I reckon I’ve had about 1 parma a week since I was 17, some good and some bad, totalling approximately 500 net. chicken parmigianas consumed. None yet have cast the spell over me that the chicken ‘parmy’ from McHugo’s has - I’m utterly besotted. It’s flawless - you have to try it. The crumbing is magnificent, the Napoli sauce is seasoned to perfection, and the chicken is fresh. I’ve taken to pairing it with the mustard side salad which marginally bumps the cost up (to an extremely palatable $25). As I write, I’ve just polished of my third of these parmys’, the true magnum opus of the counter meal category. So I can attest to consistency - they only get better.Thank you for what you have done for me, and for us all.
Always a great selection of Tassie beers and reasonably priced meals. The black pepper fried chicken is incredibly good and a reason to go often. The music they play is always great too.Majority of the staff are friendly, however there is always one who just seems like any request is beyond her which is a shame.
Went after the recommendation from Sonny. Have been back multiple times. The food is amazing. What a great pub
Nice pub, food is average but the beer choices are great
Fine dining level food in a non-pretentious pub setting. Always warm, great friendly service. They have Two Metre Tall beer on hand pump consistently, which is a unique treat for anyone who likes great beer. I am amazed. Nothing like it. 5 billion stars
We found this little gem on our last night in Hobart. Amazing food, great service and a good range of local and national beers. My husband had the chicken Parma, which came with chips only and he said was the best hed had in long time.I selected from the daily changing menu and had haggis boa and a spelt porridge type dish, both were amazing, and treacle tart for dessert, perfect. All up with drinks the bill was less than $80.
It’s a nice friendly local place to hangout. Lamb dishes are so delicious always keep my eyes on menu! Price are reasonable. I love this place so much. So many good memories.
What this kitchen does with vegetables will blow your mind!!! Great atmosphere and nice wine selection as well. Must for a true Hobart experience.
seems to be the place where the locals hang out ;drinks, food and service was great.
Fantastic food, service and atmosphere. Everything well priced so great value.
Was pleasantly surprised by the food: beef shank was great. Staff lovely and super helpful. A great spot.
Old style pub that offers a great twist on pub food. Showcasing local food, wine and beer. Would recommend
While we saw the previous reviews were scathing on the staff we found the complete opposite. They were professional and helpful. The staff were friendly and the beer was cold. The lamb shoulder was awful, unfortunately. It was maybe four to five bites of very chewy meat (and an inch of fat that was 60% of the dishin a small bowl.I cook lamb shoulder at home and I’m not even certain that this was even the correct cut.Anyway, steer clear and order something, anything, else.
Great atmosphere and comfortable surroundings. Tom Mchugos has a wonderfully embracing vibe. The menu is a wanderlust of paddock-to-plate wizardry. Seasonal, farm fresh & tantalizing creations in each category. The only let down 👎 was the female staffer who made me feel less than welcome and appeared hurried, despite low pax numbers.Happy to revisit the joint though 👍
We were excited to attend Tom McHugos based on a few recommendations but unfortunately the experience did not match the hype.Their instagram and webiste claims that they "buy from friends" so we were expecting top quality fresh produce, this was not the case. The staff generally were unsure of what the orders would be like (ie how many ribs came in the starter, if the gretan had potato etcso alarm bells were ringing from the start. The beer selection was pretty average as well.So we ended up ordering a snitzel, lamb ribs, Gretan and a side of greens...The snitzel was a frozen pre-purchased chichen piece, and not at all fresh and "bought from friends" unless they somehow know the owner of Ingham chicken personally... so this was a fail. The lamb ribs were bathed in what can only be described pure vinegar with some burnt bits of cumin and spring onion - this meal was literally inedible. The gretan was not infact potato and rather ridicchio, something the staff should have probably known, or even better, if this was writen on the menu. The greens were uninspired. The pub itself is lovely, and in a great spot, but overall the night was not what we were hoping for.
Great local place in the heart of Hobart for a cheap chicken schnitzel with chips. After some poor reviews on this meal, they have really noticed and greatly improved it! The rest of their menu is delicious and extensive also, but if you want a cheap bite for 15 bucks, you cant beat the basic chicken schnitzel! The beers on tap are great too!The staff are all so very gracious and friendly.I highly recommend this establishment!
The menu was pretentious and over complicated. When I ordered the most “simple” thing on the menu (the chicken schnitzelthe schnitzel came out soggy and soft, the batter had NO flavour and the mushroom sauce was basically a bowl of hot (again flavourlessoil. Simple drinks (alcoholic and non Alcoholicwere “not possible” apparently. However the staff I will admit, were very pleasant and polite. Simply the food and the menu are totally disastrous and disappointing.
Such delicious food. I love their sustainable attitude towards food. And the size of the chicken schnitzel is absolutely mind-blowing for $15!
I ordered chicken schnitzel. The batter was soggy and sauce was not good. But price is good.
From the moment we walked into this establishment the staff were unwelcoming and frosty. Everything we requested or asked about seemed to be an effort. The staff were not descriptive or forthcoming with any information about the food or drinks on offer. The table service was appalling to the point where the plates were thrown out in front of us without a single word from the waitperson. When we tried to engage in conversation with the staff we were again met with frosty reception. We wondered throughout our seating if we had done something to offend someone because we were being treated so poorly. Again when our plates were cleared there was no engagement from the waitperson. Despite the food and drinks being good our experience was overshadowed by poor service. On leaving one of our group approached the duty manager to air our disappointment and to understand why there was such poor service. The manager explained there was not time for pleasantries when it was busy. When it was pointed out it was not actually busy the manager stated yes but it will be in 30 minutes. We were met with more deflection throughout this conversation and need not say more but that we will not be visiting again.
Friendly staff, great location, sweet venue and great food at great prices! Will be returning here for another parmi that’s for sure! 5/5 stars from me!
We love this place. We are some of the hardest people to cater for due to dietary requirements! Ha! Phoebe went above and beyond for us. Over two night nights. She offered us so much care and attention to detail all to cater for the two of us. I work in hospitality and she truly deserves some appreciation and applause for all her efforts amongst a really busy period. Also for will and Forbes. The care, patience and kindness shown for us from them is some of the best we have ever received. Thankyou so much guys. It made our trip.
Nice drop in for a bite. Pepper chicken and Haggis bao was ful of spice and flavour!
Unfortunately was disappointed after looking forward to a good pub feed. Chicken parmy came out completely soggy and thoroughly unappetising from the first bite. Decent beers though
well...well.well...clearly Tasmanians know about this place...now I do. the flavours of the 5 dishes we selected made us stop and eat...making sounds of appreciation for the chef...the desserts surprised and delivered. well done excellent tassie wines, service and understanding about my taste pallets
Delicious food, beer, cider and reasonable prices in a lovely atmosphere.Super friendly staff!Would be 5 stars if you had a vegan or vegetarian main course option please :)!
Another great icon of the Hobart pub scene. Perfectly located on the boundary between city and the port, with easy access to the major accommodation centres.Decor is fine and simple (it is a pub, after alland while it can get quite full, it never seems crowded. Staff are great and very efficient. The menu is great and changes to match seasonal local produce. More than just the usual pub fare, it offers a range of large and small dishes, all of them reasonably priced.COVID-19 precautions are good, but meals a limited to a two hour sitting.
Tom Mchugos is changing the way people think about pubs in Hobart while maintaining a classic feel and glimpses of a classic pub menu. This is fine dining at pub prices. Deliciously put together menu with loads to please everyone. Want a chicken parma? Done. Want a miso glazed bean dish. Done. Want amazing fried chicken. You got it. Pair it with a Boags? No worries, pair it with a natural orange wine that’s too easy too. They have it all here in a warm and cosy environment with super amazing and friendly staff.
After hearing so many good things, we decided to try this place out tonight for my birthday, the food was extremely well priced, and it didnt take too long to come out. It was good, nothing too special. The venue was great, set up nicely and had a good atmosphere. The only issue we had, was the unbelievably terrible service. I genuinely dont think Ive ever been somewhere, where the staff looked like they could not wait a minute longer for us to get out, if it wasnt for the ridiculously bad attitude of the woman who cleared our table, I would have given a higher rating, and visited at least once every couple of weeks. But I genuinely dont think, myself or anyone at the table with me will ever go back.
Budget traveller should not miss this one! Serves no frill 200g beef steak at AUD 12 with a little veg and chips. Very satisfying. Thumbs up for this dish. You could add a few bucks more for different veg.
Fine example of what a pub should be. Welcoming and comfortable, delicious cookery, quality product. The food we ate here was amazing. Who knew Pies and Chicken Parmis could be SO DELICIOUS. Definitely the best chicken parmi I’ve ever had and it was only $13. Unreal. The menu is great; offering classic pub fare with some interesting variations, prepared with seasonal ingredients and real top notch produce. Local wines and beers are championed at this pub. Testament to the standard of the venue and how highly regarded it is within the local community... every single venue we visited, recommended/insisted we visit Tom McHugo’s. So glad we did.
This was our best discovery in Hobart! Absolutely mouth watering food... the only thing better than this was the prices! $13 chicken parmie, unheard of! The fried chicken is also a must. Best this side of the US. I couldn’t recommend this surprise packet more - a pub with a hipster menu but 90’s pricing. Lunch or dinner you won’t be disappointed.
I’m so happy I found this place!! The staff are the nicest, friendliest people you’ll meet. Great atmosphere, cosy interior and seating areas. I had the $12 steak (which is the standard price of steak here). Better than your average pub food and truly satisfied my cravings.
All the food we had was so tasty that I couldnt fault it!! Especially the roasted Littlewood lamb with herb yogurt, roasted radishes, greens and lamb sauce was divine!! One of the best lamb dishes in Hobart.. Great effort Tom!The room Decor needs a bit of "fresh air" especially the carpet..
