Tokyo Bay - Japanese restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand
I came here with my family, there were 11 of us and they looked after us wonderfully. We had the set menu, the timing was perfect between the dishes, the food was absolutely divine and the staff were so attentive. Will definitely be coming back. Thank you so much for making it such an enjoyable experience for all of us 😊
Had an amazing dinner here my salmon was perfect the sashimi just awesome a great venue!!! We will be back to try more🙏🙏
We had a very disappointing experience at Tokyo Bay this time. Maybe its changed hands? The only reason Im giving two stars is that the venue was excellent, and the staff were lovely and very professional. However, the reason we went there, which was for the food, was very disappointing. The dumpling in the photo was like a novice intern made it.Everything was bland underseasoned and just very disappointing. On a positive note, the sushi was excellent, the soy sauce was delicious, the perfect compli, ment and the wine was great, but we wont be back.
Hmm! This is a tricky review. The food, the venue, and the service were excellent. My only problem is with the quantity of the food, which is very subjective. Well deserved 5 stars from me, only if the quantity was a bit more.
If you’re looking for some sake bar sort of experience and try a variety of small plates, this is not the place to go. Tokyo bay is a very westernised Japanese place, from the structure/logic of menu to the taste of the food. We liked the environment & service but we’d prefer more authentic Japanese food. By the way, price leans to the fine dining side.
1. Nigiri and sashimi platter for two: 1/5. They looked fresh but way too much wasabi was smeared between the fish and the rice that all we could taste was wasabi… salmon sashimi was terribly sliced- it was so thin and ripped. Not professional. There was no salmon nigiri which we didn’t expect. We started the meal with a huge disappointment.2. Aburi nigiri: 1.5/5. Again, waaaay too much wasabi between the fish and the rice that we felt tortured eating them. We couldn’t enjoy the taste of the fish.We have a lot of sushi from sushi takeouts to proper Japanese restaurants and we like wasabi but this was too overpowering. Chef should have known that with more oily fish like salmon and tuna, more wasabi is okay but with white fish, scallops and prawns, a little wasabi can go a long way.The salmon aburi nigiri was good but everything else… well, we don’t know. We were too busy trying not to cry.3. Teriyaki duck breast was good- 5/54. Tokyo mixed Grill-3/5 it just didn’t taste good. Chicken was dry, sauces didn’t go well with the meats. Pickles tasted weird….5. Miso eggplant- 3/5 too salty but other than that it was nicely grilled.6. Vege tempura -5/5 it was delicious.Drinks were goodService- the lady taking our orders and serving our food was nice and friendly. But at the end we were over charged by $95. My husband being the kinda guy he is, just paid and walked off. He wasn’t going to tell me how much it costed because we were disappointed with the experience and he didn’t want to add to it by telling me how expensive it was. Thankfully I persisted and thought it was ridiculous that this meal costed us almost $270. We did calculations with the online menu and found out that we were over charged $95. Apparently they put a bottle of alcohol someone else ordered on our bill. He had to go back to the restaurant. This was our anniversary dinner. We enjoyed ourselves but we would never go back and will not recommend this place to family or friends.
Lovely service as always 😊and divine food. Did something unusual we shared the tapas bento box and the Diamond bento between the two of us. Had sake and finished with tea and mochi yum yum yum.
Super expensive! I guess cause I actually went to tokyo so compare quality of taste to cost, its on a different level. The $7 ramen in japan tastes better then some of their dishes....
Nicely decorated restaurant at the beach with a view. Food is always very well presented. Price is relatively high but given the location and quality it’s understandable. Ordered a few lunch bento boxes and were all tasty. This place always seems to be busy. Photos from some time ago.
The view is nice. BIG But, the cuisin & service are so so, especially sashimi are NOT fresh. Over priced, if they offer customers with these under-quality foods. And i tried twice with friends, very disappointed. Come on, u cannot sell your views ONLY!
went there for dinner , never go back again. food was just below average of Japanese restaurants, portions were tiny ( for example, the main dish for $32 !!! was presented with 3 pcs of thin slices of snapper and a few small pcs of vegeson a plate. That was it for a main!!!Service was ok, but you can NOT trust anything the waitress say about the food if you are allergic to anything). The food is heavily over priced and was like in a fine dining restaurant. .In fact it was even a near to fine dining. Do not recommend to go there to anyone!
I dont EVER write reviews. But, if you are wondering if you should eat here or somewhere else. Eat here. EVERYTHING was amazing. Highly recommend the octopus balls. Service was impeccable.
went there a couple of years ago and then never go back again. food was just below average of Auckland Japanese restaurants, service was normal, views were great, price was like fine dining.
No matter what happened that day at your restaurant. As a service oriented business, the way you have responded to those complaints are utterly unacceptable. It has shown how arrogant and rude you are. Trying to fix your Google rating won’t fix your reputation.
The most horrible service ever. We (4 adult and 4 childrenwent for lunch but the manager didn’t want to seat us at all. Although most tables were empty at that time, he was only talking about where we can’t sit rather than where we can. With his unpleasant face and attitude, we can tell we were not welcomed and had to leave. Wasted our time earlier waiting outside for it to open.I just read its one star googles reviews and found that the restaurant has a history of being picky on its customers. If you go there with child, or just for a drink, or have difficulty in mobility, or have some special request, get ready for an unpleasant service.——————————————To reply to the owner:Thank you for your eye opening response. It just proves the attitude you showed us the other day. If you don’t accept walk in customer, please put a sign or politely make it clear when we arrived. You can’t simply tell us to split table and disappear. And we suddenly became ‘demanding’ because we asked another staff if we can seat together at the deck table? Besides we can’t sit here and there, did you ever show us where we can sit? To refresh your memory, there were only two tables occupied when we were there. It’s surprising that you and your team don’t know how to deal with the ‘busy’ situation. What a ‘successful’ restaurant! Maybe you can learn from your next door. They arranged us a table immediately and friendly when we walked in, while they were nearly full of customers at that time. Oh right, before that, you probable need to learn how to speak like a human first. You’re definitely the worst restaurant in NZ. What’s more ironic is that you’re running a Japanese restaurant in such an absurd way while Japan is famous of its incredible and thoughtful customer service. Shame on you.——————————————Check on what you have done from the old comments, and your creative response. You do know how to humiliate your customers, uh? I’m so glad that more people get to see it now.
Great venue, amazing views of Takapuna Harbour, food was outstanding and service was professional. Bit pricey but acceptable for location and service.
Dined in for a friends birthday. It was Amazing. The staff were so lovely. Food was great, service is excellent and they even prepared a cake we brought in for us. Will be back!
This is a wonderfully presented restaurant, having dined here before as expected the food was excellent.Service was also top notch. However being put under time pressure twice by staff within a few minutes of arrival wasnt a pleasant start to the evening. If you want diners to leave within two hours then post this clearly online and advise at time of booking.I will take my guests elsewhere next time as theres many excellent restaurants available that dont want you to feel rushed.
Dinner with 4 friends, my first time in this restaurant I was impressed ☺. Foods served was deliciously prepared. Fresh ingredients, clean and we did not wait very long. Service was excellent, staff friendly and accommodating. Well done!!
Definitely a more classy Japanese restaurant but don’t expect true authentic Japanese food. Food still tasted good. There were big groups dining there, so if you’re looking for a place that can hold a large party, this can be the place
Excellent food, service and a view that can’t be beat. Has a great kids menu so the adults cab enjoy their meals while the little ones tuck into fare more suited to them - although the kids meals were very light for my 9 year old boy, fish and chips was suited more to a 3-4 year old. We had to order another serving to fill his tummy.
Absolutely amazing. We went to try the waghu beef but unfortunately they were sold out. Obviously very popular so definitely going earlier next time. Everything was incredibly satisfying and our waitress was very accommodating. Highly recommend.
Taste: 4/5Presentation: 5/5Service: 5/5Environment: 5/5Timeliness: 3/5Price: 3/5Great improvement from 3 years ago when I gave it 2/5. Everything was great except spicy chicken, was too bland.
The food here really hit the spot. A decent serving. We ordered two different lunch bento boxes to share and I really couldnt fault the quality and combination of textures and taste. Great view if you grab the outside seats!
The service was excellent and the food here tasted really good, nice environment, would definitely go here again if i was in the area again. Only critique would be for the non flavoured meat in the bentous, I think it needs a different dipping sauce as the one provided is tangy, but i dipped the meat into the teriyaki chicken sauce and it tasted so good.
My partner Brandon and I went for dinner here last night for my birthday and it was amazing. The food was fabulous, I couldnt believe how fast our meals came out and the service was the best service I have ever had. Our waiter Chris was phenomenal, he was professional but also catered to our age and personalities being super friendly and he made us laugh. Chris really made our evening what it was, I will be telling all our friends and family to visit Tokyo Bay and about the amazing service we received from the wonderful Chris. Thank you Tokyo Bay! We will be back for sure.
This is for my belated birthday dinner. We ordered a lot! Felt so spoiled 🥰So happy we enjoyed it.The vibe there is great and we got sea view seats 🌊Enjoyed most of the dishes and surprisingly found the dessert 🍮 was great 😊 The Beef Tataki is kinda average to us though. Glad to try Wagyu Beef, A4 is already delicious and we are looking forward to having A5! 😝There are various choices on the menu. Definitely will come back 🍽
I would give a 5 but I found this place a bit expensive for the portion size. There are other restaurants in Auckland that provide outstanding authentic Japanese food, great price & portions (ie, Yume). Maybe the reason it’s so pricing and small in portion is because you’re paying for the view?. The service here is fantastic, this is the reason for the high rate. We ordered - sashimi large plater for 2, it didn’t wow us. Soft shell crab, small (maybe 1small crab broken into 3 small pieces), it was delicious. 7 pepper squid, tasty and good portion size. Chicken karaage, was nice and juice with a crispy shell, comes with Japanese mayo. My favourite was the egg plant, I strongly recommend this, so flavoursome and melts at the touch of your lips. I think we will come back and try the main dish meals, I personally like ordering a bunch of different dishes to share and experience. I was useless at taking photos but managed to take one of the sashimi platter.
Upscale Japanese restaurant, its on the pricey side but this is expected due to the location of the restaurant. Food is good and service is okay. The small platters to share are good enough to share among 3-4 people. Good place for big group but booking is recommended.
The staff is really friendly, the location is very nice and most importantly the food is delicious the price is so worth paying for. Highly recommend this place :))
The service was great and the food was awesome. I love the fine dining vibes with friendly Asian staffs. I would definitely go back again.
Great place to enjoy an authentic Japanese cuisine! We had sushi, sashimi, grilled fish and some duck and all of them were so delicious! The staff showed the perfect service and hospitality. I’ll definitely go back and enjoy the food and atmosphere!
Tokyo Bay is the absolute best! My partner and I love this restaurant and it has been one of our favourites for the past 4 years! The staff are so friendly and their food is always amazing! I highly recommend Tokyo Bay.
Fabulous food. Best karaage Ive had in a long time. Lovely staff. Nice ambience. Recommended.
The presentation looks super appealing and appetising but not sure if it was worth it considering the price. Miso soup tasted amazing, everything else tasted average and similar to other Japanese restaurants.
Great food and nice service. We ordered 2 Bento boxes and 2 domburi. All of them are amazing😋 My favourite is the sashi plate for 2 people. Real fresh and nice. Will definitely come here again.
I went to Tokyo bay for our wedding anniversary after reading all the good comments on TripAdvisor and Google, but it turned out this is an average restaurant near Takapuna beach.Overall I dont recommend this place for the families with babies, since their baby chairs doesnt comes with straps and we had a very hard time keeping our baby seated. Also one of the staff was grumpy when my baby throw chopsticks to the floor. Feel like food was bit overpriced too. We will never go there again.
Indeed, food is actually quite nice. The Beef Tataki is a bit underwhelming, otherwise seafood is fresh, tofu is quite intrigue to try. Will be back.
Delicious food and friendly service! Ive been going to this restaurant consistently. I love their takoyaki, teriyaki beef donburi, & blue water bento!
The Sashimi was really fresh and nice, but Tokyo Mixed Grill was just okay. Nothing that special. Would have been better to order two different starters instead. We had a great time. Nice atmosphere, friendly service. Will come back and try the dinner box next time.
It was an overcast Sunday and by 1215 the place was almost full. But outside was not! Yay! Great outside table and it barely rained. Amazing view. Service was top notch. Attentive helpful and always there when needed. The tofu agashi was sooi good. Everything else was great :)
I was there in January 2020. The diner was served in typical Japanese tableware. I had the fish menus, it was delicious, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The wine card is very good and I loved the cocktails. I can recommend this restaurant. Unfortunately, I live in Germany, so I cannot have dinner here that often I would wish, but one day, I will return!
Good service, a bit on the pricier side but food was good overall. We had a big group and we ordered their signature set menu. Dont think the duck shiu mai was that great and found the teriyaki chicken really salty as it was totally drenched in teriyaki sauce. The beef tataki, sashimi, tempura (it was thinly coated with batter unlike other places where theres hardly anything but loads of fried batterand desserts were delicious.Points for location too. Beautiful views from any seating arrangements.
Very good food - we ordered share platters and I was finished after a few. Edamame was good, and the takoyaki was one of the best Id had - crisp on the outside and very creamy inside. Im not a fan of raw steak, but the seasonings on the Tataki mad it amazing!
I ve been here with my friends recommendation.Even i have been many japanese restaurant tho,i wanna give them 5 star and could pick here one of best.Every dish was beautiful and the view from restaurant is enough to enjoying fresh japanese foods. and super friendly staff.Recommend if you want to try nice japanese food in beautiful takapuna beach.
Discovered this little gem on Monday and have already been back. Great service and amazing food. Also tried cocktails on the 2nd visit which were also real good.Cant wait to go back to try out more of the menu.
Great food, very attentive staff, and I think reasonable prices especially the diner set menu. Had tempura bay which was all lovely.
Tokyo Bay is a nice restaurant with great sea views right to Rangitoto Island. The building is quite modern and there a quite a few places to choose from to get a bite to eat. Tokyo Bay offers various Japanese dishes. Staff is very friendly. I have to admit that I tried just the lunch box "The Grill" (see picture). It has different meats, fish, some salad, rice and comes with a miso soup that I think is just the perfect complement. I really like this dish because it offers a cross section. Everything was delicious. And thats why I have gone back multiple times (I think at least four timesand each time I had the same dish. Probably because of the very friendly staff, the night quality of the food, and the location it can get very busy. Id recommend to book ahead of time. At other places it can happen that the waiter/waitress interrupt you in your conversation. Not at Tokyo Bay. Somehow staff senses when it is the right time to take the order, bring the meals or clean up the table. I never perceived it as disruptive. Thats what I call great service! Yes, Ill definitely go again, and perhaps I try a different dish then.
A wonderful dinning experience, we had no booking just walk in, the kitchen just opened but friendly staff quickly welcome us, is Fusion Japanese food for sure but is quality and service matter, Japanese sake and plum wine available, we had grill lamb/chicken/beef, tufo, and BBQ duck, theyre all nicely present and tasty, the only comment is the duck was a bit gummy. Good view of Takapua beach.
Fresh and Yummy Sushi! Best I had in a long time. Excellent service. Excellent location. Hard to find parking during lunch hours. Plan your trip. No need to pre-order food as they are pretty fast in serving your order.
