Built in 1895, restored home of famous businessman Tjong A Fie, offering a gallery & guided tours.
For you, lovers of cultural heritage....this is the right place to visit. This mansion is rich in historical relics of a blend of China, and Malay. Tjong A Fie himself is an immigrant from China, who had great success in his time to become the richest conglomerate in Sumatra. The mansion, which was built in 1895, was dedicated to his beloved wife, Madam Lim Koei Yap. we came here and got a tour guide offer, so we got a lot of information about Tjong A Fies mansion and his family. there are lots of photo spots in this place, and the management of this mansion provides facilities for pre-wedding photos for a predetermined fee.
History familys wife, children, grandchildren, great grand children & famous legendary of the Chinese man from out of country married the local woman. Kindness, wisely, donations man, business man in the land of North of Sumatra.
This is my second visit here as I enjoyed it so much the first time. Sure, one could make petty criticisms, but ultimately its a wonderful old building celebrating the life of an iconic local figure whose influence reached as far as Penang and Singapore. The building is well-maintained, but the peeling paint and general rusticness superbly evoke a long-gone era, and the numerous family portraits, especially in the bedrooms, almost make you feel like youre intruding into someones home. A few rooms are off-limits to the public, but most of the house is accessible. A guide is available, but I prefer exploring under my own steam, and the exhibits and photos that are labelled are generally bilingual. In a city with few tourist attractions, this mansion is well worth an hour or so of anyones time and it was nice to see a large school group there learning about their local history. Plus, its opposite the equally iconic Tip Top restaurant so you can visit both places in the same trip.
We spend around 30-45 minutes here. Was like nothing changed and Tjong a Fie was just out of his house for some groceries. All the furniture is still there and you can walk in all the rooms. Some extra info / guide wouldve been nice though
We bought our tickets here in-person. The guide was very helpful and as a history lover, this is a to-go place. Come here with your camera as the place is very beautiful. But please remember to look for the "no photography" signs as there are some rooms youre not allowed to take a picture
Well preserved Chinese heritage in Medan. It’s a rather big house but it’s belong to a prominent rich tycoon at its time. The house is a typical Chinese with western influences. Good and interesting experience to walk and enjoy the old furniture and architecture. There’s a Rp35K or USD2,5 cover charge to enter.
A very well-preserved historical/heritage landmark that traces Medan history back to its Malaccan–Malay roots. The tickets for visitors are approximately $3 apiece per person with a free optional guided tour. Very worth to visit since Medan isn’t the most touristy city in Indonesia.
Well its a nice place cozy loved the atmosphere of that house although I didnt exactly understand who was the owner and what did he give to Medan to people to be immortalizedBut it was a good experience overall
This museum was really awesome, I kinda fall in love with this mansion and the story behind of Tjong A Fie JourneyA lot of aesthetics corner for taking a picture and the guidance really helpfulDefinitely will comeback for many times
The family & the government really look after this place & all the goods inside it. I really hope it will stay like for more generations to come. The only downside is, theres no carpark here. Its more convenient to go by taxi or motorcycle.
A glimps to Tjong A Fie and his family life. Remembering one of succesful businessman and philantrophy in his era. You got a deja vu of Cheong Fat Tze Blue Mansion of Penang yet each had its own charm. Both can be considered a very succesfull businessman and said Tjong A Fie was Cheong Fat Tze nephew. Each corner on both mansion remind me of their glorious era.
One of historical places in medan. Home of tjong a fie, one of chinese wealthy merchant in Indonesia. The man lived around early 1900s.The mansion itself is well maintenanced, huge, and have many historical artefact. Located in kesawan street near other historical building like lonsum tower. They also have merchandise and coffe shop inside. Great experience.
One of the mansions from the 18-19 centuries, owned by Tjong A Fie, a Chinese descendant.Buildings with Chinese designs, are still maintained well and dedicated to Medan City as a heritage building. The furniture in the mansion is still complete, unfortunately the information is no more contents. However, in some rooms that have good information about who Tjing A Fie is, his activities to the items used... visitors are not allowed to take photos, its a shame. 🤷🏻♀️Overall this museum is good, but it needs additional detailed information content in 2 or 3 languages, so that visitors can understand more and feel as if they are going back to the 18th century
Great man who had amazing contributions to this city during his life time. What a legacy he had left behind. And to his descendants whom the care taker of this mansion, thank You for preserving this precious place and the treasures for us to see and admire his achievements, sociopreneurships, leadershipa figure, generosity to humankind and to education. It is a pitty that his will partly can not be realized due to the nationalization of his assets.
Best museum in North Sumatra I think. They prepared well the decoration. With the 30.000 rupiahs for the ticket, you can get some knowledge of Chinese history in Medan. One that they should improve is they need to make a clear schedule of museum tour including with a guide.
One of Medans heritage. It is a house owned by former Chinese people leader in Medan, named Tjong A Fie. A very big yet old house which became a historical part of Medan city development. This house will take you back to 1800-1900 chinese architecture and history in Melayu (or so called Peranakan).
Brings you back to the old times! The vintage stuff showcased are still authentic the vibe brings you back to the past to experience the story behind. I really love this museum!
We took a class trip with Grade 1 & 2 students. The guided tour was great and we had the choice of Indonesian or English. The entry and guide fees were very reasonable considering the value of this lovely, old place that shares many interesting cultural features of early Medan. I would highly recommend it for visiting and paying for one of the excellent guides is also well with your money.
This mansion will tell you about Tjong A Fie history, his family and activities. The mansion has unique architecture. They provide guides to guide and tell us about the mansion. You have to visit this place. I hope they add some detail information on the pictures or other stuffs. For example like detail of table, maybe the origin, since what year etc. More informative.
The best heritage mansion in Medan, it was well preserved. The entrance ticket was only Rp 35k and a tour guide will guide you. Let your self feel the ambience of peranakan mansion with its grandeur and long history. A must visit while you were in Medan, North Sumatera. Very recommended one!
Beautiful Mansion with strong Chinese vibes. Fall in Love with interior and things in there, so well taken care of.Only 35k IDR for entrance fee and you may explore alone or ask guide to tell you this mansion history.
I enjoy my visit here, full of History, Culture and Unique Antics Stuffs. Moreover, the Mansion is clean, friendy and informative guide. Entrance Fees Rp.35,000/person
Unique traditional landmark that are hardly exist in Medan especially in the city center. Worth the visit for the historical information and great photo session
I loved it very much. Everything well maintained. The mansion location near Tip Top Restaurant, in the middle of Medan downtown. The entrance fee is very cheap, inside the mansion you will found a lot of instagrammable spots. A Chinnese or english translator ls are available. This place is a mandatory visit if you visit Medan.
Tjong A Fie Mansion is a historical witness for the struggle of life of a man who had dedicated his life for his family and also for the nation where he lived at that time... Tjong A Fie who was very famous at that time in Medan, the Capital city of North Sumatera, had become a Major among the Chinese people. He is also known for his charity for building Grand Mosque in Medan... Its a very wonderful place to visit...
A blast from the past, the house of Tjong A Fie was once one of the most important public figure in Medan, perhaps even until today. The tour guide will bring you through each and every rooms filled with antique, and memorable old fashioned furnitures, and in some walls you could read of how Tjong A Fie family affects the expansion of Medan city, back from collonial era until the Soeharto era. This is one place you should visit while in Medan.
They provide guided tours, also in english. You can see nice furniture here starting from Empir up to 70s. The house definitely needs a restoration
20 minutes normal, side road walk, normal traffic on crossings, from Medan centre. The Mansion is easy to find, when surrounding buildings is closed due to holidays.A lot of stores, and business buildings next to it.When you enter the house, after paying admission fee, 35k/per person, the first impression is Chinese art vibe. Most of the furniture is antique, combining with ceramic old vase, blue n white, flower and animal,Old lamp on the table, with some details accessories, is in good condition, but a bit dirty. The doors /devider is in Chinese image and color, old wood considering the building is build early on 19th century. The details on ceiling is beauty, just if those were maintain to be re coloring to match, I can imagine how wonderful it will become...Also on the inside garden area, the images on balcony walls are faded.. they were great drawings.. it shows from the shadows left behind..We werent going with the tour guide, so we read the history on the wall charts, pictures, and descriptions.. then imagining..We are having a lot of photos to enjoy the old artistic view..To mention every details is not enough for one review...To come and see for yourself to feel the ambience is recommended for anybody who love old building and art and culture..Enjoy it...
A great museum also called "historical jewel in Medan". The Mansion has Chinese, Malay and Art Deco influences in its architecture style. The place is clean & neat. They offer a museum guide along with the ticket (IDR 35,000).
Very interesting place, it tells a lot of history that i would have never known about this town. I’m very proud as Indonesian to see our local history being preserved and presented properly.
Its a historical museum in MEDAN. This place is very clean and not dusty. Not less important is the place has so many beautiful spot to take picture and instagramable. You can study the history of the richest people in MEDAN in ancient times here, through pictures or if you want to get more detailed information you can apply for a free guide. Ticket price is Rp. 35,000, - I dont know whether the price for foreign tourists is the same or not.
Had a great experience here, since i love historical yet unique places and i had nowhere to visit in Medan (in terms of museums and similar place like this). With the affordable entrance fee, we can get many info according the owner and the mansion itself from the friendly staff.
Ticket masuk nya Rp 35 rb per orang but totally worth it. Tempatnya Bersih, terawat dan ada guided tour nya. They provide rigid explanations about Tjong A Fies Life and they are very helpful in taking epic pictures of us too
It was mesmerizing. As a person who is interested in architecture and learning history, this place provides a good insight of one of the most influential people in Medan. The tour guide provides a pretty clear and brief historical background about the place and Tjong A Fies family. Also a cool place to take pictures.
Feels like time machine travelling back to the past but slowly , the old architecture of the mansion is amazing , you can stroll around and feel the atmosphere of old Chinese family life , use your imagination!
Called a historical jewel in medan, Very interesting place, there are many Chinese heritage items that we can see directly, there are many rooms and rooms that we can see and enter, there are also many photo spots, which are "istagramable" people say ✌🏼
I enjoyed touring around the mansion after breakfast. The tour guide did a good explanation of the history of Mr Tjong A Fie and family. The mansion is interesting in its design (Chinese + western influencedand exploring further, you may find some retro items which were really intriguing.Opens every day 9AM-5PM. Admission fee at Rp 35.000
Tjong A Fie Mansion, its a-must-visit place for the chinese-malay-colonialism architectural history in Medan. Built in 1895 by the richest chinese in Sumatra at his time and also appointed-honorary-officer of the Chinese Empire, Tjong A Fie. This great man gave lots of his contribution for the Sultanate of Deli and Medan City at the early time. Great historic place, great place for photography.
Great place with larger-than-life rags to riches story. Too bad its the only one of its kind. Im sure there would have been more homes like this had things been different during the Soeharto era. So much lost culture and historical narratives.
One of the best mini museum in Indonesia...Tjong A Fie Mansion is a must visit. With only IDR35K admission fee, you could experience the old Medan when Tjong A Fie live.
While have one day left to see the historic iconic museum of Tjong A Fie. A great place to see. Learn more about chinese peranakan culture at that time. Respect.
Tjong A Fie Mansion is antique and intriguing. The wooden floor, the rooms arrangements, the ambience... Everything is tidy and pretty. However, there wasnt much things you can do here. If you like to take selfies, some places are nice. If you like to admire the architecture, it was decent. If you love to hear the history, its spectacular. For photography addict, best use the camera. The lighting is rather dim so it was not the best place to get good pictures. To get into the Mansion, you can pay IDR 35,000 for a ticket. There will be guide that tells you the stories of the rooms and the adventure of Major Tjong A Fie. Some places like the altar/praying room is forbidden to take photos but others area usually are fine.P. S.For people with severe OCD, please dont get mad if you find many things placed assymetrical. Lol.
You could learn the history of the first Chinese Mayor of Medan, Mr. Tjong A Fie.They provide nice and informative guides, entrance ticket Rp35.000 / approx. USD3.The building and its furnitures are still in a good condition, with several renovated.
A beautiful place to see circa 1900 mansion with a touch of Chinese, Malay and European culture. The downside is the management are not very hospitable if visitors take a lot of photos, and visitors are only allowed 40 minutes to linger inside, a bit too rush for people who appreciate culture and history, or maybe they were not happy that we took photos at the places. It was low season I see no point in rushing us out. The tour guides were friendly, but the management were not hospitable. In term of management of the historic site, sometimes I see sign boards that distract view of the beautiful hall and other places. The cleaners broom and dustpan was left at the museums exhibition room, something that would never happen in first class museum. Rules such as 40 minutes visiting time should be listed out on papers or upfront that way everything is clear before entrance. In summary, a beautiful place but management can be improved a lot to make it international standard.
One the remaining few preserved peranakan treasure left in indonesia. You can see walk around the many rooms and wings of the grand house and relive the glitzy pastime of the peranakans whose influence are major in Medan. The grandeur of this building has seen better days but it’s definitely really worth a visit.
A historic place owned by the wealthiest person in Medan at the start of 20th century. Interesting historical background and well maintained house. Recommended!
Amazing place! Absolutely MUST TO VISIT when in Medan just for a while. We stayed at Kesawan Hotel, which is just few meters from Mansion. The Maimon Palace looks like house of some poor Sultan compare to this mansion. Really worth to see. Only one minus.. I just wanted to go to hotel for a while for something and than come back, but the ticket seller didnt allow me re-enter to mansion and just say that time inside the house limited for 40 minutes.. What I think isnt true..
This place was just a few minutes walks away from our Hotel Kesawan. It was a really nice experience visited this place especially when you really can see people migrants and we really could tell where those people come from or what is there really pure in the blood.Actually we are all mixed...in a way.But the most important things is, when we travel or migrate to a place, we really treat or consider ourselves as the local. And the only way is that do good for the local and make our root go deep. This is the feeling that this Manson gave me.
This place was Tjong A Fie house, He was one of the richest people in the city and a friend of the King of Istana Maimun. Together they built the great industrial city. This house is a museum which tells stories of family lineage. The mansion is an architectural mix of Malay, European, and Tionghoa styles and contains forty rooms.
It was a great mansion back then, but many of their collections has gone. The maintenance is also bad. It was raining when I came there and whats surprised me was no one care about water leaking from the roof.
