Tipsy Trout - Restaurant in Taupo, New Zealand
Great for lunch dinner or a casual drink. So sorry to hear that it is closing down!
Couldnt fault a thing. Late on a Sunday the standards were still high.
Just polished off possibly the best salad Ive ever had here. Devine
Very well cooked brunch that was delicious
Great place on a wet day. Good coffee and mulled wine, but no fish and poor selection of slice or cake. They catered for gluten free but not ordinary tastes. They did not look appealing. The savoury food we ordered was good.
I ordered the Tipsy Big Breakfast & my Partner ordered the Bacon Eggs Benedict, and although it was a busy day and it took around 25 minutes for the food to come out, it was tasty and memorable. Will 100% go there again when I come through Kinloch, and itโs a must try.
Very rude staff!! Coffee signs outside, door unlocked walk in and get told we are not open yet! The attitude and the way I was spoken to was disgusting!
We went to the Tipsy Trout as a birthday present for my partner and absolutely loved it, the burgers were so delicious and filling, by far the best Ive had from anywhere and the desert was amazing! Staff are so friendly and accommodating. Such an amazing experience we decided to book for the next night too and it was even better!Thank you guys so much! Cant wait to come back next time we are in kinloch!Edit 1 year later (11/6/22and we are back again to celebrate my partners birthday once again. Food was just as amazing staff were so friendly and we had quick and kind service. We absolutely look forward to coming here once a year. Thank you again for a wonderful night
Great place to eat in Kinloch. Food exceptional Service excellant. Diner was full on Friday
Went to go for dinner on a Saturday night at 5.30. Walked in and there was no-one in there. Stood at the counter for a couple minutes to be served, asked for a table for 2 for a quick dinner and got told they were fully booked and couldnt seat us and didnt bother to try fit us. I understand if the place was packed but didnt think they would turn down 2 Kinloch locals that would have been there no longer than 45 minutes when they had no one seated or even in the restaurant. Will try again on a week night
Over from Sunny Coast Queensland and pop out for a drive. Found this lovely Cafe and had BLT and a pot of chips.Amazing food, well presented and delivered to our table by a Friendly lady.Free WiFi and a wood burner to keep the place warm
Fantastic place both food and service.
Amazing food! We had to wait a little long (understandably as we were a group of 8but totally worth it! Beautifully cooked and presented. Staff were lovely also
Beautifully cooked food (bacon loaded fries ๐), lovely drinks - very happy customers indeed!
Nice little cafe. Staff are friendly and service was timely and professional. Food was very good. Nice views as well on a clear day. Can recommend if you are passing through as a tourist.
Really great chilled out atmosphere and great wine choice and delicious food.
When booking I specified that one of our party was vegetarian. There were no mains on the menu that were vegetarian, but 2 entrees that seemed to be. The mushroom risotto had a choice of bacon or tomatoes, so we assumed it was veggie, unless bacon was requested. We were never asked which topping, but given that we had indicated a vegetarian present, and 2 obviously non-veggie dishes were ordered, we figured it was safe to assume a vegetarian risotto as the 3rd dish. When the risotto arrived, it had bacon on top. I indicated that my son was vegetarian, but he said, we should just remove the bacon and it would be fine. However, it transpired that there was meat throughout the risotto, so he was no able to eat it. We were not advised that it contained meat, despite stating to the staff member that my son was vegetarian; the menu did not mention any meat apart from the optional topping. No apology, no offer of any alternative. Very unhappy
My husband had a tart which he said was good but we were very very disappointed with our coffees. I think you need to ask for a double shot where I assumed it would be a double shot in a latte as that is what Im used to in Hamilton
Great local place for breakfast, lunch or just a cold drink after a ride/run. Glen the chef has some amazing experience and when we asked for plant based food he provided a fantastic smashed avo for our lunch. Great selection of ciders and beers. Highly recommend this as a great day trip from Taupo.
Service was great.. Interior could do wtih some updating...amzing location by the lakeFood was average... Sorry to say we were a bit dissapointed as had heard good reviews
Amazing food & coffee something like you would find in Auckland or Wellington..... This establishment is a must experience.....
Had a great lunch ,service was good ,Prices are reasonable. Will be back.
Food wasnt too bad. I was there with a big group - increasing their turnover. I didnt enjoy watching a grumpy woman serving people and snapping and rolling her eyes at everyone in my group...just because we were talking and didnt always hear her calling out. We tried to be polite. We enjoyed it in spite of her...but I may just pack up and drive back to Taupo for food...
Great fresh food and helpful staff, no change table for our baby but gave us space to do so.
My partner and I had an awesome dinner at the Tipsy Trout. The staff were wonderful and attentive too. They also gave great advice when we couldnt make our minds up. Very local New Zealand vibes. The place also has a lovely outlook to the bay and warf area too. Im glad we made it an earlier booking so we could see this and the autumn leaves falling from all the trees from our window seat. The place was full and buzzing within an hour of being seated and the staff continued to be attentive. We felt right at home. Well be back when we travel to Taupo and Kinloch next.
Six of us had coffee ,lunch and dinner at this Cafe, great selection of meals that were very enjoyable and a reasonable price. No complaints regarding these meals and happy serve, wouldnt hesitate to return with friends.
Great food. I ate with a group and between us we had chicken burgers, blat and pies. Best ever.
My friend and I waited for a drinks menu, and waited...nobody seemed to care we were sat there for ages...all we wanted was a drink menu but it seemed like we were asking for the moon. In the end tired of being ignored, we left. Staff were busy but couldnt have cared less...never go back...absolutely absurd!!
We have been coming to Kinloch for over 20 years, but this is our first visit to Tipsy Trout in many many years. Previous incarnations were rather average. I had started to hear positive comments, so it was time for a visit. The menu isnโt super adventurous but the dishes we tried (BLAT and beef burgerwere very tasty. The person who took my order was very kind in dealing with my questions about avoiding certain foods. The interior could do with a bit of an update, but outside is lovely and sheltered from the wind whipping through Kinloch.Weโll be back for another visit again soon.
Lovely meals. Great service. Thanks to the young lad who recommended the fish dish tonight. He was lovely and attentive and we appreciated the service. Keep up the great work. All members of our party of 7 enjoyed their meals very much.
Had big breakfast.... took a while to eat, but very tasty, the smashed avocado looked great too... good atmosphere
UPDATE 18/01/2021: local- and awesome - Lakeman beer now on tap!!Great restaurant for locals and visitors alike. The setting is optimum with indoor and outdoor eating, making it great both summer on the terrace, and winter by the wood burner. The food is excellent and the selection very good. For the negatives, beer on tap is not available anymore unfortunately at the time of writing, service can be a bit slow at times, and the opening hours are not necessarily comprehensive - albeit understandably due to the limited client base, hence the 4/5 stars. However, it is a great place to chill out and enjoy a nice meal in lovely Kinloch. As a local, the highlight has to be the beef burger. It is without exaggeration the best burger I have ever had, anywhere. Very highly recommended.
Gave one of us the big breaking which had been ordered then a minute later waitress grabbed plate and said oh thats not yours! No sorry then all poached eggs on everyones plates were hard boiled. Mentioned to staff and no apology.
Great service and delicious food! ๐
Friendly little eating establishment. Not very private or intimate .Food was promptly served but I wouldnt have called my steak fillet more porter houses to me.Price was reasonable and good coffee
Amazing place! The food is incredible, our table of 7 ordered 5 of the southern fried chicken burgers, 1 salt and pepper squid and 1 BLAT. It was a last minute phone call to grab a table and they fit us in, even though they were super busy with an event in town. Will definitely be coming back again.
Friendly service. Ambience rather characterless but relying on marina views which unfortunately included views of public toilets. Chips ok but table lacked condiments. Menu appears to offer some variety. Perhaps needs to show some personality to make it above average.
An establishment that seemingly doesnt understand how the hospitality industry works or whose staff just arenโt bothered. Recently moved to Kinloch and have been here once before but dont see any reason to go back.We spent 20 minutes today waiting for someone to come to our table without any success. At least 3 wait staff on duty with only one other table of customers inside and one outside but in spite of them walking past our table numerous times none thought to stop and say hello or greet us let alone ask to take an order.I enquired if they were actually open and serving as i thought perhaps as it was about 3pm they might be closing. Yes, they confirmed they were open and was quite rudely told that they were โtoo busyโ for table service during the day. Thatโs fine but how about sharing that with customers? With only 2 other tables of customers in the place. There are no signs up indicating it isnt table service during the day and i donโt think itโs unreasonable to expect a staff member to have said Hello and to have let us know. On the plus aide though, the toilets were nice and clean.Still, they obviously didnโt want our custom as they were โtoo busyโ.Though i suspect that isnโt the case in the middle of winter when the baches are empty and the tourists have gone home....
Contrary to most of the reviews here, we thought it was pretty ordinary. Mightve been an off day for them. Service was fine and quite quick ๐๐ผ The food (bliss bowlswas average, in terms of portion size, presentation and variety of ingredients vs price ($18.50๐๐ฝ Rest of the menu could be great though of course. Guess it is what it is, small town New Zealand and all.
Popped in for a very late lunch. Encountered very friendly staff who presented the Salt and pepper squid salad I ordered very quickly. It was delicious. Thanks for the perfect end to a long bike ride.
Great food, tasty and delicious and options for the health conscious. Location is also pretty special and the staff and owner/chef are lovely hard working people.
We visited the tipsy trout tonight and the food was great, the service was fantastic and the staff were lovely. Would highly recommend it. We sat outside and it was nice and quiet except for the odd swear word coming from the kitchen ๐๐๐ We had a great evening.
Stopped for coffee after climbing trip. A lot of vegan friendly options available! Had a vegan brownie. It was delicious.
Beautiful little cozy place near the beach. Definitely makes one of the best coffee in the area. Great selection of teas as well if you not a coffee person. Try the green tea with coconut, you wont regret it. The place is open for dinner too but unfortunately couldnt try it yet.
Great food with friendly service.
Low key restaurant near the lake. The fish of the day was perfectly cooked and our meals were delicious. Throw in some local Taupo craft beer and friendly staff and we had a nice night. Recommend stopping in after a swim at the Kinloch Beach. Or grab a hot coffee or hot chocolate to go and take a stroll along the water front.
Me and my partner went there today for lunch and we had the burger meal each and it was incredible. honestly the best food I have had in a long time and we both loved the atmosphere as it was friendly and welcoming and staff were helpful
Fathers Day lunch - the staff reserved us a table right by the door with cold coming in each time it was opened. We asked if we could take up a couple of other tables away from the door and by a big window to see the lake. We suggested this 3 times, the waitress was not happy about this. The burgers were scummy but the chicken meal was well over done! The mussel chowder tasted more like onion soup...not very tastie at all.We were disappointed with our dinning experience. Such a shame for Fathers Day.
This place is amazing. Great choices of cabinet food and gluten free and vegan options. Coffee was perfect (and im very picky about coffee! We also got a bowl of chips which was enormous.Plenty of seating options too. I will now be going here every time I go to kinloch.
We had a great night at the Tipsy. We ordered the ribs, lamb shanks and pork Belly dishes. All of our meals were beautiful, great service and such a friendly atmosphere. We would certainly recommend the Tipsy Trout and we will definitely be back.
