Tihany, I. András tér 1, 8237 Hungary, Veszprem
1000s Benedictine monastery on a hill overlooking the sea, with 18th-century frescoes and a museum.
Strolling around Tihany Abby is beautiful and peaceful. We walked through towns alleys and forested trails with the beautiful view and the serene atmosphere all around us. Allow at least two hours for the area.
The jewel of not only Hungary, but all of Central Europe. Founded in 1055, the abbey has seen a lot of turbulent and peaceful history. What makes this abbey so unbelievable is its dramatic setting, perched atop a vista that looks all over Lake Balaton. Perhaps, this is one of the most beautiful sites I’ve seen in all of Europe. At least, one of the most breathtaking. In addition, Tihany is known for its lavender products as there are lavender fields everywhere. They even sell lavender Gin! (And lavender tonic).
Breathtaking view
Gorgeous place. Full of nature, history and culture all together. The museum part is very modern and enjoyable too. A must to see.
About 5 euros fee for visiting a rather basic church and a couple of rooms.
Balaton lake nice overview. Beautiful church and good Museum.
Cool exhibition about the history of this church.
It has a gorgeous view to the lake Balaton. It is a must visit place :)
Nice view from the monastery hill.
From the introduction video: "To start something we need to find the right materials and put them in the right order to create a sense of paradise.
Nice museum, I hope they will restore the old look of the old part of the church.
One of the most beautiful Baroque organ façades in Hungary. The angels play various instruments, drums, flute, violin and trumpets.
Short and sweet. Great for giving kids their daily culture injection.
Most beautiful baroque church I"ve seen so far, must see.
Nice place, now unfortunately under reconstruction.
This place is worth of time, energy and money
Eternal Love!😁
You can enjoy the start of the "Blue strip". It is wonderful to watch more than 500 boats on the water together at same time..
One of the best and most wonderful view of Balaton. You dont need to pay anything for the view, so it is a must see.
From the monastery only church with small museum is accessible, which did not impress me much, lets say a nice baroque church. But the crypt from the eleventh century with king tomb is amazing and monks crypt is very interesting. From the monastery there are beautiful views of the lake.
Amazing view from the top of the hill. Perfect place for admiring the lake and taking breathtaking pictures! The abbey is in the middle of a beautiful yard very well maintained. You can walk along the belvedere, you can sit on the bench or you can take a look at the telescopes located nearby.
The Abbey is a nice place to visit, the entrance fee is reasonable.
Lovely quaint Old fishing village now a little touristy still charming however. Fantastic views and an incredible
Fantastic view point. Its in my opinion the best spot to look over the Balaton. Lavender scent is all around the place
A highly recommended place when in Tihany. Scenic views!
Fair warning to those on cycling around the lake: the road to the church IS EXACTLY AS STEEP as you think it is from the bottom. Also no real bike lane. Yikes! That said, not to be missed. One of the best views of the northern part of the lake from the top. The church itself is maybe worth seeing because of its historical significance and, you know, because youre there.
Wonderful place and astonishing view over lake Balaton. Do not miss the granite stairs and the marble statue of our king Andrew I and queen Anastasia of Kiev.
This place is beautiful! Worth to visit! 😊
Tihany is such a beautiful small village, a lot of small shops for tourists. Tihanyi Bences Apatsag is just on the top of hill. Its actually quite a hike up there, but the view is worth it..
excellence place and beautiful view from hill to Balaton lake. Great point on the map of Hungary.
Truly relaxing place, great for couples and family visits. Can be very hot on a summer day so be sure to enjoy the lavender eats and drinks!
Beautiful views from the hill, around a lot of stalls selling souvenirs and local products, lots of tourists.
Brilliant views of lake Balaton. The market also has great stuff at reasonable prices
Absolute beautiful scenery all over the half island. The water is even more beautiful than everywhere else at Balaton. Nice little markets all over. Beautiful hiking spots. The church is beautiful and you can find a lot of history inside, sure worth it getting a ticket and going inside.
Such a great view and nature around. Perfect place for a weekend breakout.
Nice view. It was an island in the medieval times before became an peninsula. This process still not ended up completely, thats why you can see some swamp and reed where it joins to the mainland. You must take a walk toward Óvár into the caves of the monks if you want to catch the best view to the peninsula.
Its a nice historical place to visit for Hungarians and foreigners too
This place looks like it was taken from a story, its spectacularly beautiful
Beautiful place to visit. Connect by ferry. Beautiful few for Balaton lake from up.
Magical place, the best on Lake Balaton with stunning views, gorgeous pottery and souvenirs as well as excellent food. For a coffee try Erzsike coffee shop at the top walking towards the Echo Restaurant from the Abbey
The scenery at this site is quite great. If a beautiful weather , then have a good walk around the town would be a good choice. But if the weather is cloudy, remember to bring a coat with you. Believe me, that can make you feel warmer.
One of the oldest still-existing (benedicteanmonasteries of Hungary and also the burisl place of the fourth king Andreas I. You can visit both the church and the monastery (that has a hidtorical exhibition), and in the visitors centre you can also buy products of the benedict monks such as herbal infusions, liqours, soaps, lacander products.
It is a wonderful and peaceful place. Nice.
A very nice catholic church on the top of the hill. It has got a very nice view of the lake Balaton too.
One of most beautiful places on northern side of Balaton - Tihany Peninsula. Monastery is a must see when visiting this area.
Worth of visiting. By paying a small fee you get passage to the church and a museum. If you spend couple of hours here, you will get very good view for the history.
Want to escape the busy city life in Budapest? Need to relax? Come and take a stroll down by the monastery and rest your weary eyes on the beautiful views of the Balaton. If you stroll down the path you will find many places to eat and there is even an icecream shop. If you continue further down you will come across the echo statue where you can see if you are loud enough to produce an echo. Further down is the echo restaurant which allows you to take in the beautiful views while dining or sipping a delicious draft lavender beer. A good place to unwind and relax, or simply explore. Note: If you venture left where the echo statue is you will come across three crosses.
Good day out visiting the Abbey and the echo. Spectacular views across the Balaton. The Abbey itself is worth going in to and they have made an effort to create an exhibition in the cellars. Lots of nice looking restaurants close by and street food in the Centrum. Take the little road train up and walk back to the ferry.
Lovely church and ornate interior like many others in Europe. What distinguishes this is the lovely lake views and the very interesting museum about the food, drinks and life of the monks. A small art gallery has lovely paintings. Some cute souvenirs in the small shop at the exit.
Unbelievable view on Balaton. There are lot of shops around. You can buy some souvenirs there. One of the best place I have ever visited in Hungary.
