The Whaler - Bar in Hobart, Australia
Lovely food and staff. My wifes serving of the chowder was fairly significantly less than mine and certain I was missing my additional order of bread, but Im certain just an honest mistake and I really wasnt that bothered.
Absolute banging range of burgers, good beers and helpful staff.
Lively fish and chips, great service and fabulous interior fit out!
Great warm cosy atmosphere. Fabulous food. The staff are friendly and helpful particularly Grace who makes the best Margarita. Definitely worth relaxing for an afternoon
Came here for lunch and dinner, it was great! Grace made a difference, she worked so much harder than anyone else and was super friendly. To be honest when we came back at night time it seemed like she was being let down by the other lady in the bar, as the other woman was doing nothing whilst Grace was working hard.Grace deserves a payrise and promotion the way she looks after the business
We shared the alleged “worlds best lobster”, and it was pretty good!As for the price, I do believe $28 is a bit in-called for. Especially when 3/4 of the plate was filled with chips. That’s something I don’t like. If a sandwich is small, and contains expensive ingredients, maybe it can be presented in a better way, instead of slabbing half a kilo of chips on the plate.Tried the sandwich for the experience, and taste was okay 👍Also, the waiting time was about 20-25 minutes for the sandwich.
Just drinks for us but plenty of great foood on the menu
Wine not up agreed level, and then on to the World Famous Lobster rolls , famous for the poor quality, one would even suggest it was tinned crab meat mixed with mayo !
Always in for a good night at the whaler.Very professional staff who provide great hospitality, nice drinks and good vibes.
Not as good as it used to be. Went there in a cold Sunday and the fire wasn’t on, the fish and chips was ling (ling is a rubbish fish I reckon). My fault for ordering ling but being cold during winter is bleahh.
Wow! Thank you so much Stevie! For being so flexible! I know I changed my mind twice and I was a customer from hell, but you were so nice and accommodating! Massive thank you!
Refreshing version of seafood chowder here, highly recommended. Wide selection of beers and the lobster roll is really tasty. Cosy ambience inside with a wood fireplace and pretty stained glass decorations.
Travelled the whole of Tasmania looking for the perfect meal - Ate at expensive restaurants on our trip then found this amazing old pub in HobartTHE BEST LOBSTER ROLL EVER ! 😋
We were only in Hobart 3 days and we came here 3 times. Service was amazing, location is great & the drink selection was perfect! If youre afan of Pet Nat they have a great one! We had to Lobster roll and it was delicious. Always buzzing and full of friendly locals & chatting visitors. Lovely log fire inside too if you want to warm up.
Delicious food and superb atmosphere. Historic pub down in Salamanca Place.
Loved the lobster rolls! Only place in Hobart that offers them, as far as I know.Worth a visit.
We ordered the chowder. It took almost an hour to be served, it wasnt a chowder and was missing most of the seafood other than a few mussels. Still nice to sit by the fire and relax with some wine, but a pretty disappointing lunch.
Good food. Good beer. Good atmosphere. Few mixed reviews about the lobster roll, but I really liked it
Pub grub at its best,i recommend the chicken burger/chippies DELISH
Delicious food and wine, knowledgeable staff and a cosy atmosphere. Give it a go!
Great food, unexpectedly great wine selection, cozy ambience and friendly staff. A must if you’re after a great pub experience in Hobart!
Lovely pub that has been partially restored from its original decor, but also modernised. There is a great range of craft beers both on tap and available in the fridges, plus standard beers, wines, and spirits. Real fireplace on the inside to keep you warm plus numerous heaters outside. A must attend if you want a great drink and feed in a nice location.
Good location with nice outdoor seating. Cheeseburger was really nice! Only let down was the over cooked fries and the inside decor was a little dark and grungy
The service was reasonably slow but the food is well worth the wait!
Had a lovely meal and great service but froze as were outside.
Unfortunately myself and 3 others came into your establishment last night being Sunday 24th April for an after dinner drink. We were minding our own business when a lady approached us who clearly looked like she had taken some type of medication and was shaking her body at us aggressively. We asked her to go away , eventually she did but then your bouncer who was standing at the door came over to us and started be very verbally abusive. Claiming we were being inappropriate and he was watching us. . After that my husband came back from the bar with his drink and was dancing just around where we were standing, which there wasnt anyone else around us and your bouncer who was obviously drunk with power came back over and was very inappropriate once again. I did retaliate back before we left but we are four older adults who most definitely did not act in any way to deserve such disgraceful behaviour from your staff and will never again grace your establishment and will never recommend it to anyone. And to let someone in who was clearly high on drugs and do nothing about that is beyond words.
I have never left a one star review but I feel for here it is necessary. Do not waste your money on the lobster roll, it was really disappointing, especially as it is advertised as world famous. I have had many lobster rolls in my life and this was by far the worst, maybe other things are good but as their main advertised item I expected more from it. Barely any lobster in roll and what was there was totally taken over by the dill and mayo sauce. Wait staff were fine, I’m sure they were short staffed, but a little rude and didn’t seem happy to be there. I work in hospitality and I am rarely happy to be there but I never scowl at customers. Overall really unhappy as I was the one that suggested this place after hearing good things.
A Lobster roll seemed impossible to find in Hobart until we stumbled upon this gem. It was delicious and hit the spot. The staff were great, super friendly. Great cocktails and beers available and fun vibe, thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this place.
One of the best pubs in Hobart. Great burgers, a good selection of beers and friendly staff.
For a pub this was great, lobster roll was great and Parma with gravy on the side was really good. Pork tacos were so stacked with meat. Sure there are better tacos in some places but these were better than many from some Mexican restaurants I’ve been to
A great little pub by the water. We rolled up at 10:30pm on a Tuesday night and the staff were more than happy to serve us. Good range of beers on tap and a few others in the cabinets. Nice outdoors seating vibe.
Had the lobster linguine, very delicious. Not filling. Nice cozy atmosphere.
You must visit The Whaler it’s an amazing pub with great food and lots of drinks to choose from. Have you ever tried a cucumber, mint gose beer, thats sour and salty. It’s awesome, your mind struggle to figure out what your palette is tasting, its from another planet, it’s delicious. Highly recommend this place.
Our first stop on arrival in Hobart. Could not go past the lobster roll! Enjoyed afternoon beverage and snacks and was back the following night for after dinner drinks. Worth a visit, staff are friendly and wines are on point!
Beautiful, laid back spot with a fireplace.I took the plunge and tried the Sournade blue craft beer and i loved it. Perfect place to sit for a while and relax.
Amazing food, with a real warm open fireplace. Children loved their meals & the steak was perfectly cooked. Staff are very friendly with very prompt service. We all loved the Whaler.
Nice local pub but limited seating for meals at peak time.Good drinks with a huge range of spirits and good food.
Awesome pub with a big variety of beers and other drinks - always warm & welcoming
The whaler is the sort of pub you seek solace in when its freezing and is a bit stinky during the summer months. Its part of the old Hobart, the sandstone road that houses a row of old timey cuisines like Thai, Italian and indian. Its hard to tell how local places like these are amongst the tourists. But the atmosphere was good, staff were friendly and itll probably be here in a couple of hundred years.
Had a really great meal here last night. There werent many places open at 9pm on a Thursday so we didnt have high expectations. Will definitely be back though, some of the best chips Ive ever had at a pub!
Great spot for a beer or drink anytime of the day or night. I didn’t enjoy the food but it looked yummy. The atmosphere was so comfortable I could have settled in for a long chat over many drinks. Inside or outside this bar is a winner.
Taste was there however they have a small serving dish. I wasnt expecting knowing that most of the seafood from Tassie.
Have to get the lobster roll. Delicious and not too filling so you can still enjoy many drinks they have to offer
Incredible meal, and surprisingly tasty lemon lime and bitters! Would definitely return. We had the Chicken Royale burger and lobster roll. Both delicious and filling
While the dining area may be minimal, my friend and I sat by a warm fireplace and sat comfortably in an ambiently lit room. Country blues style music rang through the building amid the chit chat of other patrons. The food was plentiful at a reasonable price, with hearty burgers and plentiful chips. Their sauce options were commendable. It mostly excels as a bar, with plenty of drink options and friendly staff that deliver quick and friendly service.Another worthy note are the glass murals that adorn the bar, giving the place a distinctive character.
Good pub with a variety of craft beer on tap, inside is warm and cozy for a crispy day.
The Whaler is a bit of a Hobart icon off Salamanca Place. It’s a very pleasant place to stop for a quick drink after a browse at the famous market. The pub is a little darkish and atmospheric. It’s in a heritage building which has lovely stained glass above the bar. The 60s music on enhanced the atmosphere in early afternoon. The staff were terrific. I’d happily return.
Awesome tiny pub! The food is really good! 😋And the service is friendly. But the music is a bit too loud at times.
Cosy, quaint, proper old pub. Very competent, friendly staff. Good and not overwhelming menu for food and drinks. Had a Barrel Aged Brooklyn (nice twist on a Manhattan), a beer and some hot chips that were obscenely yummy.
Coolest barman. Delicious and generous meals. One of the most consistently delicious steaks in Tassie. Our lunchtime treat spot!!
