Corner gastropub with terrace seats and a menu including shellfish and craft beers.
The Urchin in Wete
Description
East 5* review. Food was extremely fresh, quick service and well priced. Definitely a local gem that Ill be returning to with no hesitation
MoreAmazing, an absolute MUST if you’re in Hove and a fan of seafood! The staff were great, the in-house beer was great, and it was incredibly well priced 👍
MoreWell worth the visit to this seafood themed pub. Mussels tasted fresh and delicious. I plan to go back!
MoreVery fresh seafood, nice vibes, great service. The mussels are so so good!!
Amazing as always. The Urchin never disappoints. Unbelievable food and outstanding service. Big shout out to Jasmine and Pete for wonderful service as always.
MoreThanks again for another amazing night at our favourite seafood place ! Here for our anniversary and excellent food and wonderful service from Jasmine as always. And a lovely service from Pete. Thanks guys
MoreGreat food. Waitress was great. Bar staff were slow and said a nasty comment to my friend.
MoreHad to book the octoberbest menu after seeing the coronation lobster rolls were back! I’ve been so excited to try these and they absolutely did not disappoint! Service, food, and drinks were all fantastic as usual :)
MoreAmazing seafood! My friends had oysters which they loved. We shared the calamari which was delicious. I tried one of their specials which was brown crab sauce on corn on the cob , with a bowl of chips (ordered separately. It was beautiful. My friends had the scallops which they adored. If you like seafood, this is the place to go!
MoreFantastic! Wonderful paella on a Sunday and great atmosphere, calm and chilled attentive staff. Will be back very soon.
MoreWe came here on Fri night and were extremely lucky to get a table as this venue is extremely popular and we didn’t book in advance. (Party of 2)We came here because of the great reputation it has for the seafood and in majority this is absolutely justified hence the 4 stars. We ordered creole mussels to share and then my partner ordered scallops as Main Course and I had lobster. The mussels and lobster were great, no issues whatsoever and very much to my taste however it seemed there was a mix up with my partners main as for a main course he received 3 x tiny Scallops for a price of £17.50.We only mentioned this at the end when we asked for the bill and the lady dealing with us was extremely understanding and helpful. She explained they had problems currently sourcing good quality Scallops and it was being addressed. She couldn’t have been nicer. She changed us only for the starter portion of mussels in the end and removed the charge for the fries.Although it was a shame for my partner to be served this portion, the lady (maybe managerdealt with our problem perfectly. She also offered him something in compensation like a another course, wine, dessert but we didn’t take up the kind offer.Overall I would definitely recommend this pub, lovely friendly service and great quality food. Perfect management style to deal with an issue. We really appreciated your help and understanding. We would like to return.
MoreGreat pub well worth seeking out. Simple menu offering fresh delicious seafood. Also brew their own beer which was very good and also a interesting selection of wines.
MoreAmazing seafood restaurant near Brighton. Highly recommend! Perfect pub and restaurant vibes. The crab was so good. Service was 10/10, so friendly. Id recommend 2 starters and 1 main, maybe 2 sides. Enjoy! :)
MoreOne of our favourite local places for seafood. Highly recommend the Malaysian prawns. Great friendly service - even when they’ve been full with bookings they were able to accommodate us as walk-ins. Reasonably priced too, we left extremely satisfied.
MoreVery disappointing. Food delicious but main scallops, at twice the cost of starter, consisted of 6 small (from a bag?scallops. One of the main prawn dishes consisted of 3 king prawns. The chips arrived after our party of 6 had finished their meals.Lovely setting and food, poor value for money. Sad.
MoreUnderwhelming menu and very expensive. Service rather perfunctory. Felt like they knew they could charge a lot and not really care. £4 for a few pieces of lettuce and, as a previous reviewer said, the bread, which the waitress recommended, was average and no butter etc. Having just spent 3 weeks in France, it did feel as though we were being overcharged for fairly average food. Not sure what Jay Rayner had to rave about.
MoreOff the back of Jay Rayners recent review we went to the Urchin tonight with high expectations - and came away disappointed. Our party of six arrived separately having booked for 6.30 but we were seated by 6.45. Starters were served by 7.15 and were ok. And then we had a long wait for our mains which didnt arrive until 8.10 - and only after a query about when we could expect them. Communication was poor and there was no explanation or apology while we were waiting. We did ask for bread to keep us going in the meantime - huge doorstep pieces arrived with no butter, almost immediately followed by our food. The king prawns were over-cooked and the moules mariniere watery and lacking seasoning - no salt or pepper on the table. Meanwhile, the fries were overly salty. Overall, the staff were friendly. However, with regards to the person assigned to our table - her service was rather joyless and perfunctory.
MoreA friend moved onto the same road as the Urchin recently, and we popped in for a refresher. Exceptional small plate seafood (scallops at their very best, in particularand excellent pale ale brewed on site. Highly recommended.
MoreDelicious food and fantastic service. Thank you Rhea :D Alexthebakingboy
An absolute gem of a place, on a side street so you might not find it just by passing but well worth searching out. The food is exquisite, well presented and full of flavour, I would definitely recommend going
MoreDelicious lunch. Wonderful Malaysian prawns. Such hospitable staff. Highly recommend but keep it to yourself
MoreSuch a dreamy experience. Amazing in-house beers, including a banging Oyster Stout which you dont see enough these days! Complimented by an incredible seafood menu - super fresh and delicious and really reasonable for the quality. Staff were ace, and accommodated us for a walk-in in the cute little garden. Lovely job of the renovation inside the pub as well - imagine would be a great cosy spot for a cheeky stout in the winter too!
MoreGreat family friendly place to eat and chill. Enjoyed my lunch, delicious oysters and mussels with guanciale. Not to mention the beer. The staff, as well, was polite and friendly. Looking forward to going back again, again and again!
MoreGot to say I very much enjoyed this place. Its upmarket without being snotty and the food is excellent without being overpriced. Staff were very friendly and the home brewed beers were the icing on the cake. Well recommended
MoreFresh and tasty seafoodWe came here for my boyfriend birthday since he had never tried a lobster before. As a seafood lover and I have tried many different seafood restaurants in different countries, I can tell how fresh it is here.My boyfriend tried the lobster for the 1st time and he absolutely loved it.Besides, we had 2 starters. My scallops was lovely but my boyfriends fried mussels was too salty for us (a tiny minus point). Other than that, we loved the food. Dessert was not too special in my point of view. The waiter and waitresses were very nice to us with is a big plus point.A very big minus point to our dinner was that we had to dine with a bunch of rude people. They were so noisy, yelling, singing loudly. My boyfriend and I couldnt even have a conversation together due to the noise. The lady at that table was not only rude to the waiter and waitress but also rude to me since I tried to cover my ears to not listen to her disgusting singing. It was to the point where I got a headache and it ruined our dinner in a way.I highly recommend to come and try their seafood. If youre lucky enough, you wont have to dine with rude people.
MoreAmazing fabulous sea food fresh well cooked wonderful staff a must if youre in Hove Brighton. Good wine list. Knowledgeable staff well trained. Perfect.
MoreWe had 3 different seafood starters all fresh, tasty and full of flavour. Great location with Tesco car park just 30 sec walk. Lovely staff and decor
MoreInteresting place, limited menu , totally seafood, not even a tomato to add to the green salad! Great selection of beers and good vibe
MoreCannot recommend it highly enough. Between 4 of us we tried nearly the whole menu. We booked to go back the next day as our visitors were that impressed. Staff were lovely, too. Truly, seafood done to perfection.
MoreI had a really good experience in The Urchin ! I had a good night and as a Frenchie from Brittany I was really happy with the wine and the moule frites (seasoning a bit different of what we are use to in France but really good too). Hope to come again for my next trip in Brighton and Hove !
MoreTurned up at 7.30pm with no booking but were shown to lovely table outside with a heater (it was a chilly evening but we were toasty). We had the muscles and the scallops, both of which were really fresh absolutely delicious. We also had copious amounts of wine, again lovely. The cheeseboard was a bit on the small side which is why this review only gets four stars. Overall a great experience. Will certainly return and highly recommend.
MoreFood great, but have never had worse service in my life.Firstly, when ordering we were asked if we wanted food altogether or as mains and starters. We asked for altogether, and were then told that mains and starters would be better. Fine - but don’t ask the customer what they want then say you know better?Felt the need to tell us that somebody had over ordered, but made no attempt to explain that the prawns ordered as a main were literally only two prawns.Told to wait to order wine as couldn’t do this with our food order. Then never came back to take a wine order.Had to ask for cutlery and plates. Rather than saying yes of course, felt the need to tell us there was cutlery in the pot right in front of us…when there wasn’t.Spent over £200 here. And then after all this felt the need to passive aggressively point out we hadn’t left a tip. There was nothing to tip.Such a shame, have enjoyed eating here multiple times before.
MoreFirst waitress was not able to explain the ‘specials menu’ to us, and did not understand the wine we had asked for. However luckily, another waitress had come to serve us, and everything ran beautifully and smoothly. We both had oysters, scallops, squid, chips and lobster. All cooked to perfection! Will definitely come again.
MoreGreat home brewed craft beer selection and lush seafood. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating too!
MoreVery impressed.Friendly and knowledgeable staff, a good range of their own beer brewed on the premises. The Oyster Stout was a real find. Will definitely return.
MoreLovely pub, great staff and delicious shellfish. Brilliant cooking and some delights like mussel nduja live, lobster Mac and cheese
MoreAmazing food and really nice ambience. The owners are friendly and offer great service. Memorable for the positive feelings that it leaves you with. The customers it attracts are also a sound bunch. Nice family environment. Fantastic quality of seafood. I only wish the restaurant area was open longer as would love to come for lunch and dinner. Would 100% recommend this hidden Brighton gem 💎
MoreWe turned up with no booking on a winter Saturday afternoon, which of course meant we only had the outside garden to sit in. Which was alright with their outdoor heaters 🔥.Food was pretty delicious 👌🏽The Crayfish & Crab Cocktail 🦀 🦐 had nicely balanced flavours and was fresh but perhaps a tad small on the portion size for the price we paid. But I suppose you trade off portion size for higher quality and higher prices. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯The XL Tiger Prawns was super delicious, the prawn peals off super easily. Definitely recommend getting your fingers stuck in for this one 🤌🏽We also ordered a platter of oysters, real bright with fresh flavours, very quaffable!
MoreGot to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this great gastro pub. From the super friendly welcoming service, a strong seasonal menu, and a super creative specials (check the lobster donut! And well priced. Ill go back.
MoreThe service was good, and the food was delicious. Very good value too.
Delicious seafood. Crab was delicious, even if a messy nightmare to eat. The Malaysian prawns were in a curry sauce-spicy but not hot.A relaxing venue, with a good drink selection. Best of all, we were accommodated on a Saturday afternoon without reservations!
MoreThe Urchin is a lovely, unassuming pub serving great shellfish in a very pretty garden. Welcoming staff, delicious dishes without the pompous presentation. Would love to go again for octopus and prawns, unfortunately they didn’t have them on the menu the day I ate there.
MoreVery nice experience at the Urchin. The food was excellent, as well as the beer selection. The waiter was friendly and service was fast. The outdoor area is very cosy and was mostly shaded which was very enjoyable for a warm afternoon. We would definitely come back.
MoreHaving recently developed a new found love for seafood my hubby brought me here for my birthday and my goodness what a treat! Every single thing on the menu sounded amazing an we had a hard time not ordering everything. They have a vast variety of beers and drinks and all a reasonable price. The set up of the place also works well for those wanting to just have a drink and those looking for a nice place for a meal as the two halves are slightly separated. As for recommendations we ordered the salt and pepper squid, the lobster hot dog, crispy crab, prawns, scallops, and the chocolate brownie with beet root ice cream - most from the specials board. Everyone was AMAZING but the favs were the lobster hot dog and the crispy crab and of course the brownie :Cant wait to come back!! and also forgot to mention we left without a crazy expensive check even with all we ordered. Hard to beat a place like this and look forward to coming back to try more yummy plates.
MoreSat in the bar area for dinner as I had my dog with me. Really enjoyed the food here (although sharing portions were a bit on the small sidebut felt embarrassed to be told my dog was "getting a bit too rowdy now" and basically ushered to hurry up and pay. I know dogs in pubs and bars arent for everyone, but he is a tiny dachshund so rowdy seemed a little unfair! Not rushing back.
MoreI adore this pub. The seafood is always really good, but I would recommend booking in advance (its really popular). The pub also have their own micro brewery and the beers are well worth trying. 100% recommend.
MoreAmazing fish and seafood! Probably the best in Brighton and Hove. So fresh and perfectly cooked. And to top it off a wide selection of beers to drink! Definitely worth a visit. A must book for weekends
MoreI dont often rate places 5 stars but this was a defo ite 5 star rating. Service was great with friendly staff. The venue is nice and quaint but still well spaced out. The wine selection was great for seafood. I had a lobster which at £36 for the size was fantastic. Everything else like the Korean prawns and Malaysian style seafood was amazing and very well.priced.
MoreVery nice, clean pub with friendly hard working staff. Great food, simple uncomplicated menu and also a specials menu board. They dont serve coffee or tea which was hugely disappointing for our party of coffee drinkers at the end of our dinner.
MoreThis pub has been transformed into a real gem. The decor is lovely, giving it a nice cosy feeling. The staff are very attentive and cheerful. There is a large selection of beers, wines and spirits to choose from. Tried oysters in here for the first time on the recommendation of the landlord, who was very helpful in showing us the whole process of eating them. A very popular place, so at peak times it can get very busy.
