The Storehouse Restaurant with Rooms - in Kirkwall, United Kingdom
Extremely disappointing. We have dined several times previously and thoroughly enjoyed the meals, the last occasion 6 months ago. However, it appears a new chef has been employed and the menu has changed for the worst and portion size drastically reduced. The £14 scallop starter consisted of 3 meagre 50p sized pieces, bread and butter £3 extra. The salmon main, £26 and 1" x 3" size, was drowned in some sort of onion soup and topped with a nest of thin noodles. The Orkney 3 fish plate consisted of a small piece of cod, a fishcake and a small langoustine which had to be cracked with a fork to get access to any meat. A small bowl of root vegetables to share between 2 people was served with the mains. Overall grossly overpriced for such meagre portions and would not recommend as a dining experience.

What an absolutely amazing dining experience weve just had here. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming. We will certainly be back here and thoroughly recommend dining here
Brilliant food, friendly helpful staff, always pay them a visit when in Kirkwall.
Great place to go for a good meal, very nice ambiance!
Had a fabulous dinner here tonight. Perfectly cooked scallops, skate wing, and langoustines. Wish we could have stayed here during our time in Orkney and eaten here every night. Next time!
Awesome food and excellent service in superb surroundings. A must try
Lovely atmosphere, good service and great food.
We stayed here for three nights in Orkney. We ate here every night as well, and Id recommend the same to anyone. The scallops are the best Ive ever had. The fish is fresh and prepared very well. The steak paired nicely with Highland Park scotch. Mocktails are delicious. Staff is very friendly.Oh, and the rooms! Comfortable bed and a big bathtub (my favorite items). Decent Internet. Would stay here again.Only ding against service is that service at the restaurant can be slow - they get really busy, but its not loud. I clearly didnt mind because I kept coming back for more, but set your expectations accordingly.
A lovely experience. Real quality. Only ate at restaurant.
Very good ambience, staff very considerate, good WiFi. Probably the best quality food youll be served in Orkney but portions are neat and prices are top - but they are fully booked all the time, so a place to share special occasions or when you wish to spoil someone.
Excellent food, highly recommend
Good food and service. A quirky place renovated and restored.
Great and very friendly service, dog friendly and a bowl of water was provided without asking for it. Excellent local food in a lovely atmosphere.
Rather overpriced and underwhelming at the same time.. Front bar was better but the restaurant didnt do it for us.. My colleagues agreed..
What a beautiful dog friendly restaurant. The best dining experience we have had in many years. The food was absolutely divine and the service wonderful. Make sure you book in advance. You will not be disappointed.
Very disappointing experienceFood was mediocre and service not greatThe restaruant itself was an impressive place, and clearly 2 chefs working hard
Excellent place , meals were great, service was a little slow, but acceptable...would recommend..
Decent modern restaurant in refurbed old warehouse. Reasonable variety of well priced dishes, large portions.
What a lovely spot for dinner. The menu captured so many local suppliers it was difficult to choose where to start so we began with a local gin as we perused the menu. One of starters, the cauliflower (picturedtasted even better than the description. The lamb was perfectly done, the potatoes sweet, the carrots cooked just right. In addition the room the restaurant is house in is bright and airy. The service very attentive, knowledgeable and a lot of fun.
Delicious meal only slightly let down by the desserts. Pricey but amazing space and great to see busy on a Monday evening.
Pressed lamb and gnocchi was beautiful.A lovely restaurant with a really interesting decor.Staff are friendly and know what they are doing.A nice relaxed atmosphere in the heart of Kirkwall.
Perfect stay and perfect meal! My family had pre-booked a Friday/Saturday stay along with a Friday evening meal. The only issue we had was finding the Storehouse. We drove by it twice before discovering the building. From the outside, it is totally unassuming and looks like an old warehouse, mainly because it actually used to be a working storehouse. But once we walked in and were greeted by the friendly owner, it was very clear how much care and how much attention to detail had gone into this new renovation. While maintaining the old look and feel, this hotel actually has more modern features than any other hotel in which I have ever stayed... in Great Britain or America. As for dinner, this was by far our favorite meal of our vacation so far. At first, I was hesitant on the menu and thought our three kids would not be happy, but I was clearly wrong and everyone cleaned their plates. We had the chicken, lamb, sirloin, and scallops and each was truly amazing. For dessert we had the homemade ice cream, the banana cake (which is more amazing than it soundsand the Treacle tart. For Americans (like uswho dont know what this is, I would liken it it to a pie that tastes completely like the browned sugar top of Creme Brule. Breakfast was equally good and included menu/table service. The staff were all very nice and accommodating. I will definitely come back to The Storehouse on my next visit to Orkney.
Decided to have a team night out after an earlier visit. Equiste surroundings the fantastic food is matched only by the lovely jubilee staff.Definitely eat here. ❤️👊
Amazing, wonderful food, service and atmosphere. The starter scallops were so sweet. Chicken and lamb dishes were faultless. Treacle tart was rich and tasty. Compliments to the chef and rest of the staff.
For me the best restaurant in Kirkwall, OK so its fairly new and frequented by Royalty 👑 the service was very friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and a place l will return to next time
Fabulous hand dived scallops and sea food in good surroundings. Nice ambience and friendly professional staff.
We booked ahead for a Thursday evening meal. One of our party has food allergies and the kitchen was able to accommodate him and still provide a delicious meal. I highly recommend the fish and chips and the scallops. The soup and steak were wonderful too. I would eat here again - lovely food, staff and a great space. Many thanks!
Wonderful food and fantastic venue for events such as weddings. Beautiful rooms as well
Had a lovely meal here, a small plate menu and it was all delicious would recommend going for the experience
Stayed for three nights. There is irony in the fact that a place so well-appointed and with such amazing design could fail on an aspect of design. The soundproofing in the refurbished building is atrocious. Well into the evening, we could hear voices next door, closing of drawers, clatter of coat hangers against the common wall, squeaking of doors, on/off of light switches, rumble of the TV. Then, the neighbours above came home with the clapping of every footstep back and forth across the room echoing above our heads. We could even hear when the shoes came mercifully off the feet and dropped onto to hardwood floors. This poor noise management in the construction is such an absolute shame as the place is otherwise beautiful, with the look and feel of some place out of a magazine. Yet, honestly, I have stayed in remote mountain worker lodges that have better sound-proofing. With prices as high as they are here, this is NOT good value. Will be leaving here unrested and irritated ... with intimate (and unwantedknowledge of the minute by minute ways-of-life of the neighbours next door and above. It is with regret that this review is so harsh. Wish it wasnt so, but others need to be forewarned.
Booked a table before we even arrived in Orkney and would recommend anyone visiting the islands does so as well as it is always busy. There were no free tables when we went in the evening during the week. For drinks I was introduced to Swannay brewery beer and picked a can of Muckle which was very refreshing. We went for seafood wherever possible and kept local too. Service was fine despite being busy with a few delays only. We were seated in the main hall at the back. There is a more intimate area at the front. An interesting building in its own right.
Booked in for dinner on sat night. The place is fabulous. Great atmosphere. Good buzz about it. Food was amazing. The mutton starter was just brilliant. A must have! Scotch egg gorgeous. Hanger steak melted in your mouth. The stuffed chicken was so moist and tasty. And the desserts were to die for. Choc and marmalade bread and butter pudding 😍😍😍. Great cocktails too. Waiting staff were brilliant. Very attentive but not intrusive. Will def be back next time I’m in Orkney.
We visited for a meal last night and our whole experience was fantastic . The food delicious the service amazing and the staff could not be kinder ... well done judith and the team. You have developed an absolute gem . Highly recommended... I can still tates the flavours !
By far the best restaurant of the 6 we dined at in our week in Kirkwall. Efficient service, and excellent food. This is a chef who understands flavours, textures, presentation and everything that goes to make a meal memorable and enjoyable. The scallop starter was three enormous scallops, with the coral, perfectly pan-fried to give that lovely caramelised flavour, and on a delicious puree. We choose fish of the day for our main, which was a trio of monkfish, hake, and lemon sole, each prepared in a different way and all delicious. Interesting drinks list includes plenty of unusual non alcoholic mocktails. By the end of the meal we had booked again for our last night!
Absolutely amazing. From the crab starter through to the mains of scallops and the trio of fish. All enjoyed the experience of eating at this wonderful restaurant. Defo recommend for anyone looking for an excellent locally sourced dining experience
Nice restaurant with good staff. Food was local Orkney which attracted us to eat here. Very tasty, duck starter is highly recommended. Just a really nice restaurant with friendly staff.
Amazing atmosphere and really delicious food! Allowed us to sit with a drink for a good while after whilst my partner studied for his driving theory test! The service was a bit slow with only one waitress during a semi-busy lunch hour but cant complain! Will visit again next time were over.
The restaurant is set in a beautiful warehouse conversion with a warm and welcoming interior. Owners have put a lot of effort to preserve the wooden and stonewall feel and subtly adding little modern touches to make the atmosphere relaxed. The dinner menu is superb and well balance of Orkney seafood and meat produce. The scallop starter with the pulled pork brown butter and silky smooth cauliflower puree was absolutely sublime. The flavour in the brown butter was intense and brought out the sweetness of the Orkney scallops. It was the highlight for me, amongst the other delicious dishes I had sampled. The restaurant is located a couple of minutes walk from the main street of Kirkwall. Book in advance to get a table. Expect £5-10 for starters and £16-30 for mains. Highly recommended and do not miss if you happen to be in Kirkwall.
Restaurant review: brilliant scallops, the rest is pretty good. The main courses here are pretty respectable, but need more attention to the vegetables - green veg needs more than being boiled. The scallops however are outstanding, a really refined balance of flavours. Great venue and the open kitchen is a joy to watch. A few more wines and cocktails would help.
What a special place. I cannot say enough good things about The Storehouse, but Ill try. We came to Orkney on what would have been the trip after our wedding (thanks Covid!), and what a beautiful place to come to to relax and enjoy an almost honeymoon! Real care and attention has been taken with the design and layout - it felt unique without being in-your-face kooky. The staff could not have been more accommodating and friendly. Everything felt extremely COVID secure.Outstanding food, and a brilliant drinks menu featuring local spirits and beers. I think I will find myself dreaming about the Storehouse a fair bit in the coming winter pandemical months. Thank you David, Judith and the whole Storehouse team!
Cant say enough about how helpful the staff were. We had delayed baggage from our flight into Glasgow, and one bag had to be flown up to Kirkwall. They called the Storehouse while we were out and said they wouldnt deliver the bag, so David went and picked it up for us. This was way above and beyond anything we would have ever expected. The room was everything advertised--pictures on the website are accurate. The restaurant was very good as well, and there were more options for breakfast than just the full Scottish breakfast. Very enjoyable visit and will stay again if we are able to make another trip to Orkney.
We were booked in for 2 nights in a suite in the inn, but left the next morning after receptionist would not stop being rude to me. It felt very racially motivated as she was fine with my Scottish husband. After a sleepless night, my husband brought up the issue with the manager the next morning, they refunded our second night and we left Kirkwall for Stromness and another hotel. Pity because the room was lovely and it was our first trip to Orkney (and probably last). Thankfully for the rest of our stay we only encountered lovely, friendly people. Would not recommend this place.
Absolutely loved having an evening meal here.Felt relaxed and at home the second we walked through the door. So in love with the quirky design and decor of the bar and restaurant. So much thought has gone into even the small details - I was even delighted on my visit to the ladies room, as the decor was just so lovely!Service was very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We pulled out all the stops with starter, main, pudding and cocktails, which did mean we spent a small fortune, but I feelnit was entirely worth it. The food was delicious, as were the cocktails.Would love to visit again soon and hopefully some day have an overnight stay, as I am sure the rooms would not disappoint!
Stylish place with welcoming open ceilings, friendly staff and excellent food. I had the Cullen Skink and then the Mussels, some of the best Ive had. The steak looked amazing too. Not the cheapest place to eat but lovely for a treat. They were also very understanding of having a bossy, tired four year old in the restaurant.
The locale is very nice and the service excellent. I ordered two small dishes which were both very good, but friends found their fish n chips dry.
From the minute we walked in, aperitif in the bar, food absolutely outstanding, particularly dessert. Service excellent. Without a doubt one of the finest meals I have ever eaten. Simply excellent. 5 stars isnt enough.
Thank you David <br/>making our time in your restaurant so special. We really enjoyed it. Attentive Service, loving Design, creative Cuisine ... Be sure to try the chocolate tarte. We will come back soon all the best christoph and corinna
Hmmm, I must have gone on a bad night.I ordered their specialty "slow braised beef". Received it, and the meat was very tough. I actually showed the waitstaff that I could not even cut my chunk of beef with a fork. After only eating about 5 pieces I gave up.After they cleared our plates, I was asked about my dinner (they noticed that I didnt eat much meat), when I showed them.I got a "Im so sorry", and that was it. No would you like something else etc.So "Im so sorry" must mean "sucks to be you".We spent nearly £80s for 2...very disappointed. Now said that, the 3 salmon starter was good, my wifes main was ok. My main was not.
Judith and David were gracious hosts and we loved this place so much we extended our stay upon arrival! My Mum and I stayed here for two nights, and it is now on our list of favourite places we have ever stayed. The design is charming and true to the character of the building, with modern amenities and local artisan accents. Beds are incredibly comfortable, and food and staff in the restaurant are wonderful. You can feel the amount of work and love that went into The Storehouse!
