Industrial-rustic gastropub serving upscale burgers & comfort food, plus craft beer & whiskey.
Went in yesterday for lunch with friends and family. Food, drinks, and service was overall GREAT! But today my mom checked her bank account was overcharged! I understand mistakes happen but she was charged double! We don’t live in the area for her to just go over there right now and tell them what happened. Very unprofessional and disappointed. The server who charged us should’ve made sure that the card was thoroughly charged correctly the first time before charging a second time..
I recently visited Redlands for the first time in 45 years of living in so cal, I know I know…what the heck took me so long?!! I don’t have an answer for that…maybe it was meant to be for the time I went?🤷🏻♂️But I digress, I have to say I’m really really impressed with downtown Redlands. I didn’t have a chance to really check it out like I wanted to so I’ll definitely be back. We were starving men looking for a place to eat, we had no agenda, no spot picked out and no direction where to eat but I I’m pretty sure this place picked us! We walked by The State in our indecisiveness of trying to choose where to eat and I’m really glad we went with the The State. First off, five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️for playing fantastic music!! The vibe is great with a very relaxed atmosphere and the staff all seemed very professional and more then that just friendly. Our waitress was Jill and what a sweetheart she was to us. She’s so engaging and very friendly and gave us fantastic service. I went with her recommendation of I believe it’s called their Stack burger with a side of tempura battered onion rings 🤤That burger paired with those rings was on point and definitely at the top of my burger experiences. Jill brought us a couple beers to try, Modern Times black beer to be exact. It was fantastic. It complimented my meal extremely well. My boy Nick, had the braised short rib tacos with a spicy aïoli sauce on the side. The tacos were good but I liked Jill’s recommendation the best! Thanks Jill! My thoughts on The State are pretty obvious. I’d go back again for sure. This is a great laid back place with great music, food and staff. Thanks again to the staff and Jill for making us feel welcomed and for great friendly service. Happy eating Fam!
I thought the menu options were new and expressive. I had the artichoke grilled cheese. It was delicious! The sandwich was huge, and the drinks were amazing. Decor is on par for a gastropub. Bathrooms are a bit tight
Great spot.We ate brunch here with mimosas and the bourbon coffee for drinks. Our food was the chicken and waffles, the Mexican bowl and we had the poutine from the regular menu. Everything we had was delicious and fresh. The waffles were nice and crispy, the chicken was nicely breaded, not overdone. The poutine was good, I would’ve preferred the french fries in it to be a little bit more crunchy. The sauce makes them a little bit soft.
My family and I have been coming here for years! Its my favorite restaurant in the area! They have unique cocktails, they specialize in whiskey and bourbon drinks, but they have variety of cocktails, from gin to vodka, to rum and theyre all amazing!!! Poutine is a must try appetizer there! They also have a burger of the month and themed days of the week. They serve brunch on the weekends, which we tried for the 1st time a couple of weeks ago and the food was great! All in all its a must try place!
5 stars just for the music. The love potion drink was tasty and strong. I ordered the State burger with onion rings. The burger is massive and filled me the entire day.
Personally it was loud for me. However, it is a younger persons atmosphere. If you enjoy loud music and a up beat establishmentthen this is the place to be.
Im super excited that theyve reopened The State, I have to admit I missed their burgers 😆, and other food as well. But yes, its a very chill spot, feel free to take the fam. Pictured are whiskey cokes, braised short ribs, and bone in ribeye. Not pictured are the appetizers Brussel sprouts and Bruschetta. All the food was delectable. The atmosphere is great, and the staff is friendly.
I like the Tartan, always great service and you can’t go wrong with my stand by favorite the Tartan burger. The restaurant does get busy in the evening but worth the wait. Also on the first Tuesday of each month they have a cigar happy hour, for a couple of hours you can have a drink and smoke a cigar. This takes place on their outdoor patio
Reserved a table inside in advanced and they still sat us outside (was above 80° and miserable, food was mediocre and insanely overpriced for tasting like **** , took more than an hour and a half to bring a single bowl of mac and cheese or the rest of our food. The servers are amazing and go above and beyond but the restaurant itself blows.
Sat at the bar and had wonderful service. (If you want a table, even at 8:00pm on a Monday night there was still an hour wait). Great drink selection with wonderful bartenders. Food was 4/5 stars but still pretty yummy.
Waited 30 minutes after giving name for seating. After 30 min we checked, but they forgot to write our name (ph#), no worries things happen. We we seated and ordered fish n chips from the menu online…but oh no! “We don’t serve fish n chips” must be an inconsistency with on line menus.Be sure to ask if you have your heart set on a meal. They may not have it. Be prepared to have your 2nd option.
Love this bar. They have any flight you want. They price out all of their whiskey for 1oz pours. I couldnt have been happier. The Poutine Fries are to die for. They are served as an appetizer but can definitely be eaten as an entire. They have a speakeasy that is by appointment only. If you want to have a diverse whiskey selection this is definitely your spot.
The food was phenomenal. The wait staff was wonderful. The bar manager was annoying. The bar tender was a sweet heart. Brunch there was heavenly from the appetizers to dessert.
Great vibe, great beer menu, cocktails fantastic! Food was good! Service was a tad slow but it was also pretty busy for a Tuesday night. Would recommend 100%
Great food & great service! Prices are good & they have indoor & outdoor seating. Vegetarian options! And its a full bar. Well be back♡
Very loud environment and very poor service from our waitress since the beginning. It was a unwelcoming atmosphere. The lobster macaroni and cheese only had 2 pieces of lobster.
Absolutely delicious, went here for my 11th anniversary with my wife and the food was absolutely delicious, they made a little sign for our anniversary, the service was amazing, and the drinks were great. My only complaint was that my whiskey sour needed just a little more sweet to it- and thats my fault, I requested rye instead of the standard bourbon. So go here, get what sounds good, and dont change it, they got it all dialed in.
Despite a lot of staff changes, and menu changes, the state keeps serving quality food and excellent drinks. The staff that stays are all really nice, and both bartenders and waitresses remember me by my preferred drink. A great place for mimosa brunches. My favorite is the grilled cheese sourdough sandwich with chicken. The state salad is also excellent. The old fashioned that I always order is perfection.
This is a great place to come for a date night during the week when it isnt so packed. During the weekend it is very busy and loud, which makes it pretty hard to carry a conversation with the person youre with. The menu is simple, but the food is very good. It has a classy atmosphere that makes you feel like you are treating yourself. Ive been here a few times with my girlfriend, we always enjoy it.
Chill vibes, tasty drinks and food. It makes for a great spot to hang out for lunch or meet up with friends. My wife and I visited for happy hour. With our newborn being watched by family, this was our first date outing. The staff was kind and attentive, and the food was delicious. My wife enjoyed the mules with vodka. Not overly sweet with a good punch of ginger taste. As for me, I enjoyed a Macallan 12 on the rocks (you can never go wrong with Macallan 12). Food wise, we had the brussels sprout, the bacon wrapped dates and the bbq burger. Everything was brought out in a timely manner and hot. My only comment on the food would be this: I thought that I was ordering the bbq burger from the happy hour menu. Apparently I ordered the normal sized one. The happy hour bbq is smaller than the regular menu one. That is what I was told, but I didn’t see the size differences, so I can’t comment on if it’s significant or not. Overall though, my wife and I were very happy with our visit. The staff, atmosphere and food are all praiseworthy, which is why we will return.
Our first time here we got there late there was four of us in our group we had the appetizer bruschetta which was pretty good we had two chicken pesto sandwiches and some shrimp tacos with a side of meatballs the service was OK the food was good the taco sauce was a little spicy The meatballs were a little dry
Huge whiskey collection! Had the shrimp tacos, was delish.
Atmosphere is loud, but overall look was very nice. Drinks were flavorful and plenty🙂.. food options were limited (they were out of a few thingsand ran out of cream brûlée as well. I did settle in for some avocado tempura lettace wrap tacos and the flavor had a kick.. not too bad.
A spicy chicken sandwich from Popeyes would have been better than the one I was served here. The chicken was over done, and too greasy. Ive been burping it for the last 8 hours. The vegan brioche was made on non- vegan bread. The restaurant was dark and very noisy in the front area we were sitting in. Id try a different restaurant next time.
Came here for our Friends bday celebration this past Wednesday Arrived around 5:45pm. We ordered some drinks while we waited for everyone to show up, Also ordered a meal. We were told at about 7 that we needed to leave because there was a 90 min time limit. Was in shock! Few more Friends showed up just after 7 and the host told them they cannot sit with us because we have to leave? I wont be coming back. Rude and inappropriate.
have never received such horrible service! We went to celebrate a birthday and were in a good sized group. We arrived 30 min. later than everyone else due to our work schedules along with more of our friends. It took the waitress several minutes to get there and the first thing she said to me was, you only have 20 minutes. Apparently there is a time cap on the tables, (90min. Seriously! )..that was not disclosed when the reservation was made, but it was too late to make a change. This was a Wednesday night, not a Friday or Saturday. I tried to order a drink, but it never arrived. The rest of the group had ordered drinks and food. Most of the drinks never arrived. A number of the dishes did not come out until after our 20 minute warning was given. Those that were "lucky" enough to get their food in time to scarf it down before our time was up, said it was mediocre at best and not worth it. I tried to speak to the manager, but he was rude and dismissive. He would not even come to our table to speak with us when we were clearly dissatisfied. The waitress was argumentative and rude. She said that it is not fair to the waitresses to have a table occupied for too long, when they could serve multiple people. So that tells me they are more concerned with tips and high turnover than good service. Not to mention, it was uncomfortably hot and stuffy. The funny thing is that they missed out. We are a group of business owners and professionals, not a group of unruly college students who wouldve sat for hours with one appetizer among us. We wouldve ordered enough food and drinks to make it worth it and we are a group of big tippers. We took our business across the street to Darbys where they were happy to serve us for as long as we wanted to stay and we tipped our servers well. I am not a person who writes reviews, but am just so taken back by the extremely poor customer service, that I felt compelled to let other people hear about our experience. Needless to say, The State is a never again for us! & the State has no business on State street as far as Im concerned!
OMGFirst time there, I was.with my dad and service by Aaron was excellent. He recommended some drinks and some dishes.Just Excellent, excellentThey deserve 10 stars not 5I definitely be back with the family... love it..... 3 drinks 2 plates under $70 worth it...
Edit: 3/25/22I came here for my birthday and decided to try the ribeye. I ordered it medium rare and it came completely well done. The flavor was good, but just not at all what I ordered. Once again, our waiter didnt come to check on us until we were pretty much done eating, and at that point it was too awkward to say something because I didnt want it to seem like I was just trying to get more food/my meal comped. Everything else was good, just disappointed in the accuracy and service.--Ive been here a few times, and have always had a pretty good experience. I came for dinner with my husband on a Thursday evening and there was about a 20 minute wait. I really liked that the wait-list had a link to see where we were in line. The service was pretty good and we got our food relatively quickly. Unfortunately after we got our entrees, the waiter never came to check on us until we had finished eating and didnt ever refill our waters, which were empty about half way through. The food itself was good, though it was weird that some of the menu items didnt have prices next to them (you scan a QR code at the table that links you to their menu).
i still can keep it 4 stars but I liked short rib in the Victoria gardens location more then here. we went here for brunch, egg Benedict was good but the orange juice was not fresh. so, I recommend this place for dinner more than brunch!
Havent been back to The State since it was closed for renovation till last night and it was definitely top notch!! The atmosphere of it all felt welcoming and exciting. Staff here at The State are extremely nice and punctual. Cant go wrong with both of their food and drink choices that are on the menu. Im glad that The State is back in Downtown Redlands!! Cheers!!
Great food and atmosphere, the waiters good. But did take a while to your drinks when sitting at a table. Would take like 10-15 min for each drink to arrive at the table which slowed things down. I got the poutine and it wag good I finished it but the gravy they add was at time overwhelming in flavor. I tasted a burger and it was great. Bread pudding was great with nice soft bread. Would go again, do recommend.
Went for brunch. Great atmosphere, awesome food. My wife got the chimichanga and I got the avocado toast. Both were superb. I also ordered Brussels sprouts, and we finished off with a yummy bread pudding. My only comment is that I wish it would have been a little more pudding and a little less bread. Our server, Kylie, was awesome!!!!
Ive been to this place in the past, pre-covid, but tonight was my first visit since their renovation and reopening... Wow!! Such a cool vibe, sort of steam-punk-through-the-looking-glass feel. I had the Chicken Pesto sandwich, which was absolutely delicious. Juan, our server, was superb as always and took great care of us. Fabulous place with a lot of character and passion infused into the atmosphere, food/drink, and service. Love it!
First off, weve been here multiple times, and have always had excellent food & service. This last time and the time before, the service was definitely lacking. However, Im not willing to leave less than 5 stars to such a beloved local establishment. Small business needs to be supported especially now. Last time around I had the Mac & wedge salad, hubby had the spicy jelly burger & onion rings. Today he had the shrimp tacos, and I had a Caesar salad and fries. Our friends had two orders of the chile verde tacos & short rib tacos with the wrapped dates to start. Everyone enjoyed their food, but some of our order was forgotten for quite some time. And drinks were not replenished for a solid 20-25 minutes. Our server was obviously very busy, and everyone is short staffed right now. The manager came out and helped us with our issues. We will be back because we support small above all else. Im grateful to be alive, healthy, and dining in again. Its okay to make mistakes, we are all human. And gorgeous remodel by the way!
Great selections of whiskeys. Old fashions are awesome here! Even the food is delicious! The poutine fries with an egg are the best! Closes around 1 am I definitely recommend when out here at in downtown Redlands ! Check It out
A trendy, hip gastropub with an emphasis on good burgers and good beer. They have plenty to offer aside from that as well - the hummus is great, and the dressing on The State Salad is particularly tasty, and their cocktail game is strong. They just remodeled and its looking as modern and vibey as ever.Busy at peak times so consider a reservation. Ive been so many times and never had a bad experience! My favorite stop in all of the Inland Empire!P.S. They might or might not have a speakeasy here... Guess youll have to find out!
After two visits to The State Ive had a variety of items across the menu. I tried the Short Rib Poutine with a fried egg, the 16oz Bone-In Ribeye, the Truffle Burger, Lobster Mac and Cheese, and the Happy Hour Short Rib Street Tacos along with various coctails. For the most part, the food was okay. I felt the short rib tacos desperately needed a sauce. The mac n cheese was good, nothing special. I actually wish it had been more cheesy. I tried to record a "cheese pull" video and there wasnt enough cheese to be noticeable, more like a cheese sauce opposed to melted cheese.I had different issues with the poutine. While there was lots of cheese, it was already cooled down on top and returning to a solid state by the time it hit the table. I also ordered an over easy fried egg on top and that egg was dead, just cooked through and through. However, two different servers offered to make another one and took it off the bill, so that was nice. No complaints about the amount of meat, there was plenty. The ribeye was cooked well, I just didnt care for the rub they used. I think it had some kind of chipotle overtones and Im not a fan of chipotle. The shining star of my experience was the truffle burger. It was phenomenal! The burger was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was juicy and delicious! It really took the cake both visits. I would go back just for the burger. The drinks were also excellently prepared and presented.Overall, it was a pretty average experience. I expect there to be a few hits and misses in a dining experience, hence the three star rating. For more food reviews and pictures follow me on Instagram @Aimee.Eats_
Nice sit down place for lunch in Redlands. Had the Happy Hour portion of a chicken pesto sandwich. Was tasty & a perfect portion to almost allow room for creme brule.
Pros: the server was nice! She made sure we were taken care of and okay through out our stay. Poutine was nice, tacos were nice!Cons: the food was… lacking. Mac and cheese had no flavor ): also the steak…. Was so dry 🙃
One of the better places in Redlands, where I grew through high school, and definitely much better option than what we had growing up. But this place feels like its digressing and I can think of at least 3 better options -- Citrus and Grove (food and cocktails), the oyster place in the alley behind state (food, wine and environmentand Copehouse (cocktails). We ordered a medium rare burger and it was way over cooked. I ordered the last word cocktail with mezcal and the bartender swore it was his favorite and knew how to make it, but way too acidic, no balance between the ingredients and just a poorly executed cocktail. Couldnt finish it because it was so tart. Then we tried to order 2 cocktails since it was last call only to have the bartender tell us they cant sell us 2 drinks at the end. Seconds later we hear the other bartender ask the customers 2 seats from us if they wanted to double up on drinks since its last call. We ask our bartender about that and he says he actually didnt have amaretto (an ingredient for the 2nd cocktail we orderedand not that he couldnt serve 2 drinks at the end. Whats the point of lying to a customer. Just tell us that.Youre in the service industry for a reason. There are no cocktails, whiskeys, spirits, or beers youre serving that customers cant get elsewhere. The service is usually a distinguishing factor and The State fails in that respect from my experience. For those who may wondering if this is based on just one visit. Its not. Ive been there about 10 times, most before they were closed for construction. The service and cocktails were inconsistent but they were still getting their program up and running and felt like they were trying to find their niche. It didnt feel fair to share that review then. But now theyve had more than enough time to get that all resolved but it feels like it will be that way for the team. Appreciate the ambition but the skillset and execution is lacking. The new decor and lay out looks amazing though.
Food: Made a fast stop for an appetizer and a drink. The Mac and Cheese made my tounge twist and shout and it was a perfect portion. There are plenty of beers to choose from and I let the server pick for...spot on recommendations.Service: From the host to the server, everyone was friendly and welcoming as can be.Ambience: The place was busy but I waited only for a short moment to be sat. Its also in a cool little area to walk your food and drink off.
I arrived and checked in, when doing this I was told the wait was 30 minutes. They asked me for my phone number and said they would text me when my table was ready. I was also asked if I wanted to beseated indoors or outdoors, I requested to be indoors. As my wait time was approaching 40 minutes I went to the host to ask what was going on because someone that was there after me was seated before me, They said something went wrong and there was no way they could text me and then proceeded to tell me that it would be another 15 to 20 minutes for my table. I waited and then we actually were seated outdoors which I did not want but when I contacted Gary from the State in Rancho Cucamonga, he advised me to ask for the manager. I did just that. Her name was Madison, she was apologetic and very nice, our waitress was really friendly and nice as well. To make things right, Madison gave us free dessert which was actually very delicious. The food was great, it was tasty. The only thing that was wrong was the issue with tha wait fir the table. I didnt see anyone else having trouble getting their text so that they could be seated, so with that said this is why I cannot give them 5 stars at this time.
Great selection of whiskey. Putin was great. Oysters were fresh and addicting. Rib-eye was good, but on the fence with the cajun rub they used. Surprisingly kid friendly. Definitely will be stopping by here more often.
Fun place to hang out. Their drinks are better than their food. I got their house salad with chicken and it was just okay. My fiancé got the caprice sandwich, and it was pretty good. The restaurant is very loud, which makes it difficult to talk.
Best Gastropub in the Inland Empire. Great selection of liquor, they can make literally any cocktail you request. I appreciate that they use fresh juices in their cocktails instead of processed juice. Yummy eats... Im a huge fan of their Poutine; its the best! They have a good Taco Tuesday special, must check it out! 🌮🌮🌮
Tried Ontario location first, then here by local friends of mine. The state has great selections of whiskies and burgers were 2 times better than Ontario location (personally). Was our first time here and wont be the last for sure. Highly recommend!
Went on a Thursday night and it was fairly busy due to Farmers Market Night but we managed to get seated right away because we choose outside seating. It was a chilly night but the heaters kept us plenty warm. The tap list, drink list, and whiskey list is pretty extensive so it shouldnt be difficult to find something to wet your whistle. I had a vodka mule that featured an in-house made ginger syrup. It was delicious. The starters/appetizer options are available for everyone (vegetariansand portions are fairly generous. We had the poutine and bacon wrapped marscapone stuffed dates with balsamic reduction. The dates are out of this world! Our entrees were the sweet and spicy burger and grilled cheese sandwich. Both were presented nicely and were tasty. Service was a tad bit slow and it took a while to get our check but everyone was very friendly!
This is a great date night restaurant. Love the atmosphere, though it is a little loud at times. Amazing food! They just updated their menu with some changes. They have a large selection of beers, wines and cocktails as well as spirits. The drinks are unique and usually exceptional. FYI, the waiters/waitresses do taste test your drink before bringing it out to you... I recommend the state burger with fries (don’t forget to ask for the aioligreat dipping sauce. Also the poutine is amazing.
One of the best bar/restaurants Ive been to in a while. Everything is original and high quality. Excellent service and reasonably priced. Early happy hour (2pmand excellent happy hour food. Great whiskies and signature drinks, outdoor patio is nice.
