Rustic wood-floored pub with a garden terrace, serving gourmet burgers plus kids' menu.
The Star, Malden Rushett in Victoria
Description
We past The Star on the way to Chessington and thought it looked really nice and inviting. So glad we called in for evening meal. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and were interested in what my granchildren had to say. The food was delicious fresh and hot. I recommend the desserts big portions and great choice. We would love to visit again.
MoreHad lunch with my son and we both had a lovely meal. The Star is a nice traditional pub with nice friendly atmosphere and staff. There is plenty of parking and outside seating pods. bubble friendly...
MoreFairly newly and tastefully refurbished pub/restaurant wit a good ambience and atmosphere.Family gathering of 12 so had to pre-order no problem. Table was all fully prepared on arrival. They dealt with a few minor changes without any fuss.Very good professional young staff. Service was slightly slow but it was Sunday peak time. The roast was awesome and all the other orders went down well. The sweet menu was very good too.A thoroughly enjoyable family lunch much to the efficient running of this establishment. Well done.Highly recommended.
MoreDelicious food and drink, very pleasant and spacious pub. Fast service. First visit, will be back again.
MoreWe went on a Thursday lunchtime arriving about 12.30. Carpark was busy, although still spaces available. There is outdoor seating and lovely little wooden huts for those wishing to eat outdoors with a little extra protection from the elements. We chose to eat inside. Lovely atmosphere- warm and inviting. Dogs very welcome...wish we had bouht purs. Nearly every table had a dog as part of the group (loved that).Friendly and attentive staff, although they didnt hover over us as we chose from the menu. I chose the goats cheese, roasted veg and walnut salad with a side order of chunky fried chips - delicious. My husband chose a chicken and rib combo (sadly chicken was a bit overcooked - but was still ediblewell presented and huge! It took around 20 minutes for food to arrive and we drank while we waited, chatted and listened to music and dog watched.Would definitely go again and recommend the varied menu with lots of Vegetarian and GF options. Thoroughly enjoyable.
MoreGreat food in a lovely pub with particularly friendly and helpful staff. Would recommend to anyone who, like us, wanted to get away from theme park food and prices.
MoreService was good and with a smile. Food was delicious and the atmosphere was nice. Prices were good for what you get. Highly recommend going here for lunch/dinner.
MoreDelicious food and great service! Beautiful place to have a Sunday roast by the pubs garden.
MoreWe came on Sunday and was welcomed with open arms. We were greeted by a lady we knew who used to work at another pub and now manages here. The atmosphere in the pub is bubbly and warm, you feel welcomed instantly and the service is quick. The staff are lovely and the whole is lovely to be in.This pub has always been special to me because when my grandad died in 2013 we had his wake in this pub. This pub is so welcoming and has so much positive energy as you enter.
MoreBland underwhelming food with very high prices. However decent service and its a nicely decorated and well maintained pub. Perfect for a few drinks. In terms of the food, I ordered the ultimate burger which is advertised as a 10oz burger with cheese, bacon, lashings of BBQ sauce, burger sauce, tomato, lettuce, red onion, gherkin, onion rings, slaw and skin on fries for a whopping £17.95.Patty sizes were good but my burger was bland, only a little bit of burger sauce noted. Gherkin missing, patty overcooked with no moisture and crumbling. Bread crumbled in my hand as soon as I picked it up even though it was dry. The so called lashings of BBQ sauce is served seperately on the side. Its quite a watery sauce with the consistency of watery gravy. On the plus, chips were nice although I wouldnt exactly call them Skin-on-fries as advertised. They were also quite a small portion. Ultimate burger should come with ultimate chips. Definitely not worth almost £18.This dish also came with two separate onion rings on top and coleslaw on the side. The burger was constructed with a onion ring inside which was quite chewy. On the bottom of the burger they used red onion. It doesnt make sense to have both types of onion on top and bottom, one cooked and one raw with two varying flavours.Wife ordered Chicken ceaser salad which is advertised with croutons, parmesan & anchovies. This was made with basic lettuce, had only four croutons and only three small anchovies. It was also three average sized bits of chicken. This salad was a whopping £13.95. On the plus, ceaser sauce was nice. Very basic and small salad for almost £14.Kids chicken Goujons with chips and baked beans ordered for £7.50. Kids loved the chips but again these chip were too small a portion and only 3 small chicken Goujons provided. In my opinion just average pub food but at a higher than average prices. I attended over the bank holiday weekend so who knows, maybe the ingredients were not as freshLastly, the main attraction for me was the advertised play area. It was this that initially attracted me to this pub. I was quite disappointed in it as it is quite basic. Its literally a teepee, a small bridge and a fixed small wooden train. Whilst it looks nice, Kids got bored after 10 minutes. A slide wouldnt go amiss. Also, not sure if this is staff but bicycles were left on the side of the play area. So if a child runs in to them, there could be an accident.I also attempted to use the app to order but was advised against it by staff, not sure why. Maybe the app is not great. And for those that are interested, this place does not offer blue light card/emergency services discount.Overall, should I go there again, it is a nice pub and friendly staff but I will just stick to the drinks.
MoreDelicious Sunday roast! Service excellent. 10/10, thank you very much. Dessert menu is a thing of pure beauty…
MoreQuite pricey food,But worth the money. Quick service and friendly, great little play area in the garden. Pet friendly pub with a great drinks selection
MoreLovely food and cocktails. Always my go to pub for good food. Thanks to Mia for making our evening enjoyable
MoreThe star can be hit or miss. Ive had some great meals here and very mediocre ones also. Service is generally OK, and rarely great.Their current 2022 menu is a bit lack luster, their Calamari wasnt seasoned and a bit overdone, burger was OK, dough balls were unimpressive. Outside seating is nice and their range of drinks is impressive.
MoreUnfortunately both my husband choice and my choice were off the menu. So we went for the satay sticks which as usual were perfect. Then he had mushroom wellington and i had a side salad . The Wellington was lovely. The side salad consisted of chopped onion, cherry tomatoes rocket and baby leaf mix. Not a patch on what it used to be when it included runner beans and cucumber with dressings. A real dissapointment. Our friends had liver and vegetables and a very large portion of chicken wings. No complaints here. I did however mention the bins in the ladies which was full and overflowing onto the floor. The waiter service was brilliant. Very attentive.
MoreThe food was really good with Great service. Really impressed with the Ribs, the meat just falls off the bone. The rest of the party had burgers which went down well too
MoreVery good food. Very friendly staff. Nice to have good Vegan & Plant Based options. Tables outside are nice under the covers but very wonky on the ground.
MoreLarge choice of tables to suit any taste - outside, covered, bubble, near large windows... Good service.
MoreI know the hospitality sector is having staffing issues right now, and I try to be patient customer, but this is the second time in a row Ive had pretty bad service here. The barman took the best part of 10 minutes to make two cocktails (of the same type), having to constantly refer to the drinks manual. He didnt stir it after adding lemonade, so all the flavour was at the bottom. And even then, it was so full of leaves, ice and lime that you could finish it in just four sips. I ordered an extra pint of lemonade to make it properly myself. 40 minutes after ordering, no food had arrived - not even the starters. We asked for an update and it took nearly another 5-10 minutes before anyone got back to us. Thereafter, food arrived fine (albeit my wings had the wrong sauce). Even so, we still had to chase up a few things, and it was clear there was confusion and poor communication. Disappointing.
MoreNice environment inside or out. Large canopy area in the garden for shade and weather protection. Nice meals, though I thought the pecan pie slice was very small.
MoreService was a little slow. There was a very good selection of food, the vegetarian menu was one of the best that Ive seen. Drinks were a little pricey. All said I would go back again
MoreWarm friendly environment, quality food
Been here before and loved it, sadly my daughters took me today for my birthday and was quite frankly rubbish, slow food arrival for the starters and the main course (had to be promptedafter eating said to daughters lets pay and leave they said have paid but waiting for a jokey sweet with candle in they paid for . . Didnt arrive couldnt be bothered to prompt again so we left. Moral of the story is DO NOT PAY UP FRONT
MoreNice local pub, food is good, could do a bit better with cleanliness in the pub garden and to bring our meals out together rather than a long gap between.
MoreCame here with the family. The food was really disappointing out of 4 meals none of them was decent.Fish and chips very soggy, the Salmon dry and bitter, Pig Burger was tasteless and Chicken katsu curry awful. I didnt complain but definitely not going back.
MoreExcellent service, very spacious,Big garden out the back, lovely food, couldnt fault it really for my first visit.
MoreThis place is nicely furnished with good inside and outside seating, is easily accessible with good parking and staff are friendly and helpful. Its a short drive from Chessington Workd of Adventures. The menu here may look rather ordinary with a typical selection of pub food but dont let that deceive you as the food is really excellent.
MoreExcellent food, great service, though Ive deducted a star for the terrible music. It shouldnt make that much of a difference, but in such a lovely pub the 90s school disco soundtrack really ruined the atmosphere of the place.
MoreNice place to stop not far from Chessington on our way home. The food was lovely but the kids meals were over priced for what they were given. Also £6 for a side of cheesy chips for one fussy child, again very over priced. Small outdoor play area for young children. It was busy but it took a long time for our drinks to come, they arrived after our food. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Nice big carpark.
MoreLovely food. Very nice staff. Very friendly. We had mega ribs. Omg they are amazing!!! I shared them with my daughter 💓
MoreNice relaxed atmosphere, with quality food. I couldnt have what I wanted, but.what I had was great. They also have a great range of gluten free, and vegan meals.
MoreWe decided to have a family meal here for our childrens 8th birthday, and Im happy to say it was a great meal! The staff are welcoming and helpful, the food delicious, fair prices, the atmosphere relaxed, its cosy, and as it was for my twins birthdays they kindly let me bring their birthday cakes and at the end of the meal brought them out and sang happy birthday! I highly recommend The Star!
MoreIncredibly overpriced food for the standard. Waiting staff were good but they took so long to deliver one childrens meal, that the rest of the group had finished (and so didnt want to eat it). This was after us chasing several times for multiple meals missing
MoreAlways very pleasant when we come here! The service today was quite slow but still an enjoyable experience. We ordered the roast and although it was lovely most of it was quite cold/ not warm which was a shame. Hopefully this is a one off as I’ve always had good, hot food here before. I do appreciate they were very good to us and took drinks off the bill.
MoreReally really really nice chicken and rib combo. Had the garlic and her dough balls to start also and they were nice. Was disappointed with the apple crumble as there wasnt much apple, and the crumble was a bit well done.Lovely outdoor seating area at both front and back. Little booth/huts which have heaters and plastic zip down covers also. Will definitely return!Had the same main meal again today and still great! Service was a bit slow but was quite busy.
MoreStuff very young, vibrant and friendly. Food was pretty palatable all the way through, my trout was fried with care, veggies where also nicely prepared, I would recommend the chef to add some funky side sauces to the menu as standard, such as rosemary mayonnaise, garlic and chive or mustard mayonnaise with dill etc.
MoreWent today for Sunday lunch - had the full rack of ribs - dont bother - boiled so they were tender which is fine - but then lazily thrown some bbq sauce on top - so the meat had no BBQ flavour - and they missed half the ribs with the sauce they chucked on - worst ribs i have had anywhere im afraid. Wifes "Ultimate" burger was the thinnest patty ive ever seen also - old salad on top - she left half of it ... The only positive was the service good - but wont return
MoreAverage at best! Visited as a party of 4 and the Service was ok, but the food wasn’t great with really basic mistakes such as the chicken I had being very overcooked, with all the chips in everyone’s meal being soggy and only just cooked; wouldn’t rush back!
MoreWe had reserved a table for 4 today and had a nice meal and dessert. The view was lovely, the pub busy but the staff were nice. The one disappointment was that dogs were allowed in the seated indoor eating area. I realise dogs are allowed in the pub section and outdoors, but having a smelly dog jumping up in the restaurant section (as we were trying to eat our mealswas not pleasant.
MoreWaitress offered great service, but unfortunately the food was not up to standard especially based on the price. We were a party of 2 adults and 2 kids and only 1 of us enjoyed their meal which was the pizza. The food was presented nicely but it was rather bland tasting. Personally I wouldn’t go back.
MoreWe visited as a party of 7 + 1 dog for a dinner birthday party.Parking was adequate, service was great, food was delicious and great variety of drinks menu.Dog-friendly was a plus, we had a great time.
MoreIf you came here you must try the chicken marinated with lime, it is delicious. My fish and chips was nice but is difficult to digest.
MoreFantastic experience at this pub. What sets them apart is the staff - from when we were welcomed to when we left they were all so friendly, went beyond expectations and made us feel super comfortable. They even treated the little ones with so much respect. The setting was also brilliant. On the hottest day of the year, being able to sit outside in the beer garden was much needed…there’s a small play area for little kids to keep them entertained. The food was very delicious and portion sizes were huge…we had the steak, sea bass, chicken kebabs, chicken and beef burgers, the ribs and the pizza (pizza was the only one that disappointed, it was a little too dry). I would come back to this place again and again now that I’ve found it!! Thank you so much for looking after us!
MoreA new find and so close to those Chessington enthusiasts, staff and seating is amazing. Great for a outdoor brunch on a sunny day. A nice little nook for your little ones
MoreI love this place, wether it’s having a gin tasting session with a barman that just started off as a conversation about gin ( he pointed me towards monkey47 and I’ve never looked back right up to having my 40th birthday here, it really is a great place.Great staff, great food big garden my only gripe is it’s not within walking distance.
MoreSimply brilliant pub food and fantastic beer garden. Not only were the staff exceptional but they really made us feel welcomed and appreciated and not ignored. I highly recommend this restaurant as there’s a lovely walk in the woods just across the road from the pub, Ashtead Common which was just what I needed after a wholesome meal.
MoreThe food is top class! Make a pit stop here great atmosphere nice surroundings and the drinks are awesome. Great place to take visitors or family. Pet friendly too. Fav hot spot to socialise. Took my family here visiting from south africa! Great place my new favourite socialising corner
MoreWhat a lovely place for a meal. Idealy placed if you want a great bite to eat on route home from chesington. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was well presented and tasted amazing. Can not complain about portion size, great value for money.
MoreHad a lovely summer evening 🌃 there. The food 🍲 is a bit pricey but the ambiance and isolation makes up a bit for that. I ate outside on a bench with an umbrella. They could have gotten more sale from drinks from me but no one checked to see if I needed any top up. There loss really.
MoreStopped for Sunday lunch, sat outside as it was good weather. Busy pub might recommend booking if there are more than 2 of you. Very accomdating for 2 adults plus 11 month old. Good selection of food for adults and kids. Dog friendly too. Would recommend.
